Charlie Blackmon has enjoyed quite the power surge over the last week, recording three homers to highlight a trio of three-hit performances in his last six contests. The 31-year-old aims to continue swinging a hot bat on Friday as the Colorado Rockies open a three-game series against the host Miami Marlins.

Blackmon went deep for the second time in as many contests on Wednesday as his 27th homer gave the Rockies a 3-2 win over Cleveland, marking their fourth win in six outings. His 50 multi-hit performances are tops in the majors while his 74 RBIs are the most among the game's leadoff hitters. While Colorado and Arizona are jockeying for position while holding down the National League's two wild-card spots, Miami has dropped five of seven to slowly work themselves out of any faint postseason discussion. Giancarlo Stanton remains the talk of South Beach, however, as the slugger went deep for the sixth time in seven games in Thursday's 3-2 loss to Washington, extending his career-high and major league-best total to 39.

TV: 7:10 p.m. ET, AT&T SportsNet-Rocky Mountains (Colorado), FSN Florida (Miami)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Rockies RH Jon Gray (4-2, 4.94 ERA) vs. Marlins RH Jose Urena (10-5, 3.70)

Gray recorded his third straight strong outing on Saturday after allowing one run on six hits in seven innings of an 8-5 triumph versus Philadelphia. The 25-year-old has permitted just six runs and struck out 18 batters against two walks in his last three outings, but only has a 1-1 mark to show for it. Gray hasn't fared well in two career outings versus Miami, posting an 0-2 mark with a bloated 9.31 ERA.

Urena yielded one run on three hits for the third time in four outings Sunday and improved to 3-1 in that stretch with a 4-1 victory at Atlanta. The 25-year-old has limited his foes to a .157 batting average in that span and looks to continue his strong surge versus Colorado. Urena has notched a 1-0 mark with a 1.42 ERA in two career starts (12 2/3 innings) against the Rockies.

WALK-OFFS

1. Colorado 3B Nolan Arenado and 2B DJ LeMahieu each have hit safely in nine of their last 10 games.

2. Miami OF Marcell Ozuna is mired in a 4-for-27 rut over the last seven contests.

3. Rockies SS Trevor Story is stuck in a 1-for-18 stretch over his last five games and has struck out 23 times in his last 13.

GAME: Houston Astros (71-43) at Texas Rangers (54-59)
DATE/TIME: Friday, August 11 - 8:05 PM EST
WHERE: Globe Life Park in Arlington, Arlington, Texas

Preview: Astros at Rangers
Gracenote
Aug 11, 2017

Nine teams in the American League are separated by 6 1/2 games in the battle for the two wild cards, with the Texas Rangers near the bottom of that pack in eighth place. The Rangers have a chance to make a move up the standings with a 10-game homestand awaiting, although they must kick it off against the AL-leading Houston Astros on Friday night.

Cole Hamels, coming off his first complete game of the season, will start the series opener for Texas, which has lost seven of its last 11. Slugger Joey Gallo has homered in three straight games, giving him 32 for the season, and has eight blasts and 14 RBIs during an eight-game hitting streak. The Astros started their eight-game road trip by getting swept in a three-game set by the Chicago White Sox to fall to 2-7 in August. Marwin Gonzalez, who had a run-scoring double Thursday to tie for the team lead with 67 RBIs, is 12-for-28 with four homers and 12 RBIs against the Rangers this season.

TV: 8:05 p.m. ET, AT&T SportsNet-Southwest (Houston), FSN Southwest (Texas)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Astros RH Charlie Morton (9-4, 3.78 ERA) vs. Rangers LH Cole Hamels (6-1, 3.59)

Morton has provided the Astros with more than they could have hoped for in his first season in Houston and needs one more win to match his career high established in 2011 with Pittsburgh. He took a no-decision despite his third straight quality start last time out versus Toronto, yielding three runs on seven hits in seven innings. Carlos Gomez is 5-for-13 with a home run against Morton.

Hamels had allowed 15 runs over 17 1/3 innings during a three-start span before limiting Minnesota to one unearned run and four hits to go the distance for the first time since the regular-season finale in 2015. He made three starts against the Astros in 2016, winning twice and surrendering five runs over 21 2/3 innings. George Springer, who came off the disabled list Wednesday, is 0-for-11 versus Hamels.

WALK-OFFS

1. Houston has won seven of 10 meetings this season, including a three-game sweep at Texas from June 2-4.

2. Texas claimed RHP Jhan Marinez off waivers from the Pittsburgh Pirates.

3. Astros INF Alex Bregman has hit safely in a career-best 12 games.

Ryan Braun looks to deliver his sixth consecutive multi-hit performance when the Milwaukee Brewers open a three-game series against the visiting Cincinnati Reds on Friday. Braun recorded two hits in Thursday's 7-2 setback against Minnesota and is a scorching 12-for-21 during the five-game stretch.

Braun, who has hit 39 career homers against the Reds, has enjoyed solid success against scheduled Cincinnati starter Homer Bailey by going 13-for-39 with three blasts. His hot hitting hasn't been able to keep the sinking Brewers from losing five straight games and dropping to third place in the National League Central - two games behind the first-place Chicago Cubs. Scooter Gennett's next homer will give Cincinnati five players with 20 or more for the third time in franchise history - Eugenio Suarez belted No. 20 in Thursday's 10-3 assault of San Diego to join Joey Votto (31), Adam Duvall (25) and the injured Scott Schebler (23). Votto, who has belted 34 career shots versus the Brewers, is 8-for-24 with two homers against scheduled Milwaukee starter Jimmy Nelson while Duvall (7-for-15, one homer) also has fared well versus the right-hander.

TV: 10:10 p.m. ET, FSN Ohio (Cincinnati), FSN Wisconsin (Milwaukee)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Reds RH Homer Bailey (3-6, 8.86 ERA) vs. Brewers RH Jimmy Nelson (9-5, 3.24)

Bailey, who has lost four of his last five starts, was torched for 10 runs and 10 hits in 3 1/3 innings by St. Louis in his last turn. The 31-year-old has allowed five or more earned runs in five of his nine starts and eight or more three times. Bailey served up three homers while allowing six runs and six hits in three innings in a loss to the Brewers on June 29 to drop to 5-9 with a 4.93 ERA in 23 career starts against them.

Nelson settled for a no-decision against Tampa Bay in his last turn, when he struck out nine while giving up one run and six hits over eight innings. The 28-year-old has put together three consecutive strong starts and is 1-0 with a 2.14 ERA, 26 strikeouts and just four walks in 21 frames during the stretch. Nelson is 2-0 with a 1.93 ERA in two outings against the Reds this season to improve to 5-3 with a 4.41 ERA in 13 career appearances (11 starts).

WALK-OFFS

1. The Brewers hold a 7-3 season series lead and recorded a three-game sweep at home earlier this year.

2. Milwaukee 3B Travis Shaw went 2-for-4 on Thursday - one night after missing a game to tend to a family matter.

3. Votto is 22-for-46 with four homers, 14 RBIs and 16 walks during his 15-game hitting streak.

The Kansas City Royals are in a tailspin that has them back at the .500 mark, but they have a chance to turn things around with a pair of last-place clubs up next on the schedule. Coming off a four-game, home-and-home sweep by in-state rival St. Louis, the Royals continue their eight-game road trip against the Chicago White Sox on Friday.

Kansas City has lost four in a row and nine of 11 to surrender second place in the American League Central to Minnesota while remaining four games behind division-leading Cleveland. Lorenzo Cain went 7-for-10 in the two games in St. Louis, but the Royals were battered for 37 runs in the four-game set. Rookie Yoan Moncada hit a tying homer in the ninth inning before delivering a walk-off single in the 11th as the White Sox completed a three-game sweep of AL-leading Houston. Moncada is expected to be a key piece of Chicago's rebuilding along with right-hander Reynaldo Lopez, who makes his season debut in the series opener.

TV: 8:10 p.m. ET, FSN Kansas City, WGN (Chicago)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Royals LH Danny Duffy (7-7, 3.48 ERA) vs. White Sox RH Reynaldo Lopez (2016: 5-3, 4.91)

After turning in back-to-back strong starts on the road, Duffy was roughed up for seven runs - three earned - on three homers in a loss to Seattle in his last outing. He yielded two runs in 13 2/3 innings at Baltimore and Detroit in his previous two turns and lost to Texas on July 15 despite giving up one run over 8 1/3 frames. Yolmer Sanchez is 9-for-20 and Jose Abreu has gone 13-for-37 against Duffy.

Lopez, who made 11 appearances (six starts) as a rookie with Washington last year, was acquired in the deal that sent Adam Eaton to the Nationals. The 23-year-old Dominican made 22 starts this season for Triple-A Charlotte, logging a 7-6 record and 3.79 ERA with 131 strikeouts in 121 innings. Right-handed batters hit .353 against Lopez last year, but he held left-handers to .193.

WALK-OFFS

1. Cain has gone 18-for-34 over his last eight games.

2. Moncada is 9-for-21 during his six-game hitting streak.

3. Kansas City has dropped five straight on the road.

GAME: Atlanta Braves (51-61) at St. Louis Cardinals (59-56)

Preview: Braves at Cardinals
Gracenote
Aug 11, 2017

Dexter Fowler has returned to the St. Louis Cardinals lineup just in time, as the center fielder who helped the Chicago Cubs win the 2016 World Series has his new team surging toward the top of the National League Central division. The Cardinals open a three-game home series Friday against the Atlanta Braves sitting just one game behind the Cubs for the division lead after Fowler belted a grand slam in Thursday's 8-6 victory over Kansas City in his fourth contest back from the disabled list.

Fowler drove in five runs in Thursday’s win - the sixth in a row for St. Louis - and is 6-for-13 with five extra-base hits, five RBIs, six walks and seven runs scored since recovering from a strained right forearm muscle. The Braves flirted with .500 in the days after the All-Star break, but after closing July with 11 losses in 14 games have opened August by going 3-5. Atlanta is batting .239 this month with a .295 on-base percentage, averaging only 3.5 runs per contest. Center fielder Ender Inciarte had his 13-game hitting streak snapped in Wednesday’s 3-2 loss to Philadelphia, as Atlanta scored two runs or fewer for the third game in a row.

TV: 8:15 p.m. ET, FSN South (Atlanta), FSN Midwest (St. Louis)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Braves RH Mike Foltynewicz (10-6, 3.94 ERA) vs. Cardinals RH Adam Wainwright (11-5, 5.00)

Foltynewicz established a career high in victories Saturday by striking out a career-best 11 hitters with no walks in a win over Miami. He is 7-1 with a 3.58 ERA in 12 starts since the beginning of June - Atlanta winning 10 of those contests - with 74 strikeouts in 70 1/3 innings. Foltynewicz was hammered for seven runs in four innings of a loss to the Cardinals on May 5 in Atlanta.

Wainwright struggled early in the season but since has regained the form that has made him one of the National League's premier pitchers. He has won 11 of his past 13 decisions, but gave up three runs in three innings of a no-decision Sunday against Cincinnati. The 35-year-old is 8-3 with a 3.38 ERA in 17 career games (12 starts) against Atlanta, which drafted the Georgia native in the first round of the 2000 draft.

WALK-OFFS

1. The Cardinals outscored the Braves 21-7 in sweeping a three-game series May 5-7 in Atlanta.

2. St. Louis C Yadier Molina is hitting .382 in 10 games this month with four homers (including a grand slam) and 10 RBIs, and has scored at least one run in the past five games.

3. Atlanta LF Matt Kemp, on the disabled list since July 29 with a right hamstring strain, could begin a rehab assignment soon.

Aug 11, 2017

The Chicago Cubs are hoping a day off helps them snap out of their funk and build their lead in the National League Central. The reigning world champions will find out Friday, when they visit the Arizona Diamondbacks for the opener of their three-game series.

Chicago has lost two straight and six of its last eight as its division lead has dwindled to one game over St. Louis. The slide began at the beginning of the month, when the Cubs dropped the last two contests of their three-game home set against the Diamondbacks. Arizona also is slumping as it has lost two in a row and four of its last five after dropping an 8-6 decision at home to the Los Angeles Dodgers on Thursday. J.D. Martinez belted his seventh home run in 18 games with the Diamondbacks while Paul Goldschmidt, who registered his first career three-homer effort at Chicago on Aug. 3, ended his six-game hitting streak by going 0-for-5.

TV: 9:40 p.m. ET, CSN Chicago, FSN Arizona

PITCHING MATCHUP: Cubs RH John Lackey (9-9, 4.81 ERA) vs. Diamondbacks RH Taijuan Walker (6-5, 3.60)

Lackey has thrived since the All-Star break, going 4-0 with a 3.00 ERA in four starts, although he has worked more than five innings just once in that span. The stretch marks the first time the 38-year-old Texan has won four consecutive turns since July 2011 while with Boston. Lackey owns a 4-0 record and 2.76 ERA in five career starts against Arizona.

Walker's winless streak reached seven starts on Saturday, when he allowed three runs over six innings in a no-decision at San Francisco. The 24-year-old native of Louisiana has not pitched poorly during the drought, giving up three earned runs or fewer in six of his seven outings since defeating the Rockies in Colorado on June 21. Walker, who never has faced Chicago, has posted a 4.14 ERA in eight starts at home - more than a full run higher than his 3.11 road mark.

WALK-OFFS

1. Cubs C Willson Contreras (hamstring) underwent an MRI exam on Thursday and could be sidelined for several weeks.

2. Arizona LHP Robbie Ray (concussion) on Saturday will throw his first simulated game since being hit in the head by a line drive on July 28.

3. Diamondbacks C Chris Iannetta has homered in each of his last two contests.

The Baltimore Orioles attempt to move closer to a wild-card spot when they visit the Oakland Athletics on Friday for the second contest of their four-game series. Baltimore began the set on Thursday with a 7-2 triumph and is 1 1/2 games back in the race for the second wild card in the American League.

Trey Mancini posted his fourth career two-homer performance and Adam Jones went deep and drove in three runs as the Orioles produced four blasts while evening their record at 2-2 during their 10-game road trip. The 25-year-old Mancini became the fourth member of the team to reach the 20-homer plateau this season, joining Jonathan Schoop (25), Manny Machado (21) and Jones (21). Oakland is in search of its first win on its nine-game homestand after dropping a two-game set against Seattle and the series opener versus Baltimore. Jed Lowrie has hit safely in 10 of his last 12 contests after going 2-for-4 with two RBIs in Thursday's loss.

PITCHING MATCHUP: Orioles RH Ubaldo Jimenez (5-7, 6.31 ERA) vs. Athletics RH Paul Blackburn (3-1, 2.60)

Jimenez ended his four-start winless streak on Sunday, when he limited Detroit to one run on nine hits and three walks in 5 2/3 innings. The 33-year-old Dominican has pitched well of late, allowing a total of four runs in 18 2/3 frames over his last three outings after surrendering four or more runs in five of his previous six turns. Jimenez owns a 4-1 record and 4.66 ERA in seven career starts against Oakland.

Blackburn notched a victory over San Francisco on July 31 despite being roughed up but pitched much better on Saturday, scattering five hits over 6 2/3 innings of a win over the Angels in Los Angeles. It was the 23-year-old rookie from California's second scoreless outing of the year and the third in which he did not allow an earned run. Blackburn, who will be facing Baltimore for the first time, is 1-0 with a 3.93 ERA in three starts at home.

WALK-OFFS

1. Athletics rookie 3B Matt Chapman exited Thursday's game with an undisclosed illness and is day-to-day.

2. Orioles OF Joey Rickard went 0-for-4 in the series opener after getting hit in the head by a pitch on Wednesday.

3. Schoop leads Baltimore with 82 RBIs but has gone four games without recording one.

GAME: Los Angeles Angels (58-58) at Seattle Mariners (59-57)

Gracenote
Aug 11, 2017

The Los Angeles Angels are creeping up in the American League wild-card race and aim to post their fourth consecutive victory when they visit the Seattle Mariners on Friday. Mike Trout's three-run double in the top of the ninth inning propelled Los Angeles to a 6-3 win in the opener of the four-game set and moved it within one game of the second wild-card spot.

The red-hot Trout has recorded eight multi-hit performances in his last 12 games and is a torrid 20-for-44 with four homers and 11 RBIs during the stretch. Veteran Ricky Nolasco will be on the mound for the Angels after recording his best outing of the season against the Mariners on July 1, when he tossed a three-hit shutout. Seattle slugger Nelson Cruz belted a two-run homer in the opener and has gone deep seven times in his last 10 contests. Jean Segura also went deep for Seattle, which has won eight of its last 12 games.

TV: 10:10 p.m. ET, FSN West (Los Angeles), ROOT Northwest (Seattle)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Angels RH Ricky Nolasco (5-12, 5.09 ERA) vs. Mariners LH Marco Gonzales (0-0, 12.27)

Nolasco escaped with a no-decision against Oakland in his last turn despite allowing five runs and nine hits over four innings. The 34-year-old has given up five or more runs in three of his last six outings and opponents are batting .290 against him this season. Nolasco is 1-0 with a 2.79 ERA in three starts against the Mariners this season, stands 2-4 with a 3.88 ERA in eight career turns and has served up three homers to both Cruz (8-for-22) and Robinson Cano (7-for-21).

Gonzales struggled in his Seattle debut on Sunday, when he allowed five runs and seven hits in four innings of a no-decision against Kansas City. The 25-year-old, who was acquired from St. Louis last month, won both of his starts at Triple-A Tacoma before being recalled. Gonzales missed all of the 2016 campaign due to Tommy John surgery.

WALK-OFFS

1. Cano recorded his fifth two-hit performance of the month on Thursday but is mired in a 17-game home-run drought.

2. Angels 1B C.J. Cron homered in the opener and is 9-for-18 with two blasts, two doubles and six RBIs over his last five games.

3. Seattle LHP James Paxton (pectoral) departed Thursday's game in the seventh inning and will undergo an MRI exam on Friday.

Aug 11, 2017

The Los Angeles Dodgers have been making a mockery of the National League this season and look to win for the 16th time in 18 games when they host the San Diego Padres on Friday for the opener of their three-game series. Los Angeles posted an 8-6 road victory over Arizona on Thursday to win for the 46th time in its last 54 contests.

Yasiel Puig (hamstring) was not in the starting lineup and rookie sensation Cody Bellinger went 0-for-5 on Thursday, but the Dodgers still had plenty of offense as Enrique Hernandez contributed a three-run double, Justin Turner plated a pair with a two-base hit and Chris Taylor hit a solo homer. Bellinger has gone deep 33 times and is just two behind Mike Piazza (1993) for most blasts by a rookie in franchise history. San Diego has dropped six of its last eight decisions and allowed 32 runs while losing three of four to Cincinnati. Wil Myers has homered in back-to-back games for the Padres after enduring a 5-for-43 funk.

TV: 10:10 p.m. ET, FSN San Diego, SportsNet LA (Los Angeles)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Padres LH Clayton Richard (5-12, 5.17 ERA) vs. Dodgers LH Rich Hill (8-4, 3.47)

Richard is winless in his last nine starts, losing five times in that span. The 33-year-old gave up four unearned runs and five hits over six innings in a no-decision against Pittsburgh last time out. Richard is 1-2 with a 6.23 ERA in three starts against the Dodgers this year, working eight scoreless frames in the victory, and 7-6 with a 4.13 ERA in 22 career appearances (20 starts).

Hill is 4-0 over his last six starts and has registered 48 strikeouts against six walks during the stretch. The 37-year-old dominated the Padres on July 1, when he scattered four hits over seven scoreless innings while matching his career high of 11 strikeouts. Hill is 3-3 with a 3.90 in six career starts against San Diego, including a victory on April 5 in which he allowed one run and two hits over five frames.

WALK-OFFS

1. Dodgers RHP Kenley Jansen reached 30 saves for the fourth straight season on Thursday.

2. San Diego All-Star LHP Brad Hand served up two homers and was charged with three runs in two-thirds of an inning on Thursday after being unscored upon in 23 consecutive appearances.

3. Los Angeles LH Clayton Kershaw (back) is slated to throw a bullpen session on Friday for the first time since being injured on July 23.
