MLB Preview: Astros (40-28) at Mariners (30-37)

Game: 1
Venue: Safeco Field
Date: June 19, 2015 10:10 PM EDT

Lance McCullers saw no issue with being removed halfway through the game in his last start against the Seattle Mariners despite not allowing a single hit.

That's partly because the Houston Astros had roughed up Roenis Elias enough that McCullers' services no longer were needed.

McCullers and Elias oppose each other again Friday night as the Astros seek a sixth straight victory in the opener of a three-game series in Seattle.

Houston's winning streak began with Sunday's 13-0 victory over the Mariners, when McCullers (3-1, 2.00 ERA) threw 90 pitches while walking four in five hitless innings. Manager A.J. Hinch decided the 21-year-old's pitch count in his sixth career start was high enough to sit him with an 11-run lead.

'We pitch to win ball games and to get this team down the road into the playoffs,' McCullers said. 'Not going back out there was not a big deal.'

The right-hander hasn't allowed more than three runs since making the jump from Double-A for his major league debut May 18. McCullers is one of multiple rookies contributing for the Astros (40-28) as they became the first AL club to 40 victories by capping a four-game sweep of Colorado with Thursday's 8-4 victory.

Preston Tucker homered for the second straight day and fellow rookie Carlos Correa had three stolen bases. George Springer is batting .468 during an 11-game hitting streak after going 2 for 5.

Springer has hit in the leadoff spot for the last six games in place of reigning AL batting champion Jose Altuve, who has been receiving treatment for a hamstring injury.

'It never ceases to amaze me with this team,' Hinch said. 'Different contributions all the way through.'

Elias (3-4, 3.67) had been giving the Seattle rotation a boost by allowing two runs or fewer in five of his six starts before the Astros touched him up for eight over 3 1-3 innings Sunday.

'He just didn't have much command, and it was a tough day for him in a lot of different ways,' manager Lloyd McClendon said of Elias, who entered that contest with a 2.79 ERA.

Houston wasted little time getting to Elias, scoring three in the first inning Sunday after plating two in the first and another in the second May 1 as Elias took the loss in the Astros' 4-3 win May 1.

They've won eight of 10 meetings this season while outscoring the Mariners 64-34. Seattle (30-37), which has a .233 team average that is tied with Milwaukee for the worst in the majors, had trouble getting its offense going again Thursday, falling 7-0 to San Francisco and getting shut out for the fourth time during a 3-5 stretch.

Nearly half of the Mariners' 17 runs in that slump - during which they're batting just .185 - came in an 8-1 win over the Astros on Saturday. Seattle especially has had trouble at home lately, plating 18 runs while losing nine of 11.

Nelson Cruz hasn't homered since May 27 and is 1 for 17 over his last five. Robinson Cano, hitting just .237, sat out Thursday with a stiff lower back, and Kyle Seager's consecutive games streak ended at 192 when he was scratched with food poisoning.

It's unclear if Cano and Seager will play as Houston seeks a seventh victory in the last nine meetings in Seattle.

White Sox designate Noesi, recall Carroll
By THE SPORTS XCHANGE

Hector Noesi was designated for assignment by the Chicago White Sox on Thursday, when the pitcher was replaced on the 25-man roster by right-hander Scott Carroll.

Carroll was promoted from Triple-A Charlotte and was with the White Sox for one month earlier this season, posting a 1-1 record and 3.12 ERA in eight relief appearances.

Carroll was 3-2 with a 2.37 ERA (eight earned runs in 30 1/3 innings), 18 strikeouts and a .219 (25-114) opponents average in six starts with Charlotte this season.

Designating Noesi creates an opening on the 40-man roster, which stands at 39.

Noesi was 0-4 with a 6.89 ERA and 22 strikeouts in 10 games (five starts) this season with the White Sox.

Rockies put RHP Brown on DL, recall RHP Bergman
By THE SPORTS XCHANGE

The Colorado Rockies put right-hander Brooks Brown on the 15-day disabled list Thursday and recalled right-hander Christian Bergman from Triple-A Albuquerque.

Brown is back on the DL with the same shoulder inflammation that landed him there for three weeks in May.

Brown is 0-2 with a 3.86 ERA in 24 games.

Bergman is 2-0 with a 4.18 ERA for Colorado this season.

MLB roundup: Vargas' 9th-inning homer lifts Twins
By THE SPORTS XCHANGE

MINNEAPOLIS -- Kennys Vargas' home run with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning lifted the Minnesota Twins to a 2-1 win over the St. Louis Cardinals on Thursday at Target Field.

The blast came on a 1-1 count against Cardinals right-hander Carlos Villanueva and was Vargas' fourth homer of the season and first since May 6.

Twins reliever Blaine Boyer picked up the win after working around a leadoff double in the top of the ninth to keep the score tied at 1.

The Cardinals broke the scoreless tie on a homer by Jason Heyward in the seventh. The Twins tied the score at 1 with a homer in the eighth by Joe Mauer.

Phillies 2, Orioles 1

PHILADELPHIA -- Ryan Howard hit a two-run homer in the sixth inning and Philadelphia ended a nine-game losing streak.

Howard's 12th homer of the season came off Bud Norris and made a winner of reliever Jake Diekman, who had been recalled from Triple-A earlier in the day.

The Phillies' losing streak was their longest since they dropped 11 in a row in 1999. The win was just their fourth in the last 23 games, but their record remains the worst in baseball at 23-45.

Manny Machado led off the game with his 14th homer of the season, accounting for Baltimore's run.

Angels 7, Diamondbacks 1

PHOENIX -- Mike Trout had two hits and an RBI triple and C.J. Wilson struck out a season-high nine in eight innings to lead Los Angeles over Arizona.

Johnny Giavotello and Taylor Featherston homered in the second inning and Giavotello opened a five-run sixth with a single. Trout drove in the first run of the inning with his triple. After two walks loaded the bases, Efren Navarro hit a two-run single off reliever Josh Collmenter to make it 5-1. Carlos Perez followed with a two-run double.

Wilson gave up eight hits but pitched to more than four batters in an inning only once in his second straight quality start after giving up 11 earned runs in 13 innings in his previous two outings.

Padres 3, Athletics 1

OAKLAND, Calif. -- Matt Kemp and Derek Norris homered, Ian Kennedy threw six strong innings and interim manager Pat Murphy got his first victory as San Diego ended a four-game skid and halted Oakland's four-game winning streak.

San Diego won for the first time since manager Bud Black was fired. Murphy had lost his first two games.

Kemp's homer came in the fourth inning and Norris led off the sixth with a home run that made it 2-0. Josh Phegley hit a solo shot in the bottom of sixth for the A's.

Astros 8, Rockies 4

DENVER -- Houston hit two more home runs, including a three-run shot by pinch-hitter Domingo Santana, and completed a four-game sweep.

Santana hit his first career home run with one out in the eighth inning to give the Astros a five-run lead. Houston leads the majors with 97 homers and has won all 27 games this season when it hits multiple home runs. They hit 12 homers in their four victories over the Rockies, including wins on Monday and Tuesday in Houston.

The Astros, who are 8-1 in interleague play this season, have won five straight games and six of their past seven. The loss was the fourth straight and eighth in nine games for the Rockies.

Yankees 9, Marlins 4

NEW YORK -- Alex Rodriguez collected his 2,998th and 2,999th career hits, and Carlos Beltran belted a go-ahead, two-run home run as New York defeated Miami.

Rodriguez singled in the first and fifth innings against Mat Latos before flying out on his first attempt at the 3,000-hit milestone with two outs in the sixth against Mike Dunn (1-4).

The New York designated hitter came up with no outs in the eighth but did not swing as Sam Dyson threw four consecutive fastballs out of the strike zone. That prompted profane chants from most of a disappointed crowd that did not witness history.

Blue Jays 7, Mets 1

TORONTO -- R.A. Dickey allowed one run in 7 1/3 innings, and Chris Colabello homered as Toronto beat New York.

Jose Bautista singled home two runs in Toronto's five-run fifth inning as the teams split a four-game, home-and-home interleague series. Each team won its home games.

Dickey (3-6) allowed three hits and five walks and struck out seven to earn his first win since May 21.

Rays 5, Nationals 3

WASHINGTON -- The first seven batters in the order had at least one hit as Tampa Bay topped struggling Washington.

Not only did the nationals lose the game, but they lost star right fielder Bryce Harper to an injury in the sixth inning with an unspecified leg injury.

Three infielders for the Rays had at least two hits -- Evan Longoria, Logan Forsythe and Asdrubal Cabrera. Steven Souza Jr. scored two runs against his former team for the Rays, who are 19-11 on the road.

Royals 3, Brewers 2

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Wade Davis pitched out of a one-out, bases-loaded mess in the eighth, and Greg Holland logged another save as Kansas City held on to beat Milwaukee.

Jeremy Guthrie (5-4) collected the victory, holding the Brewers to two runs on seven hits over six innings.

The Royals swept the four-game series from the Brewers, who lost six straight.

Red Sox 5, Braves 2

ATLANTA -- Clay Buchholz allowed only two unearned runs in seven innings, and Boston beat Atlanta to earn a split of the teams' home-and-home, four-game interleague series.

The win snapped Boston's seven-game road losing streak.

Buchholz (4-6) gave up six hits and one walk while striking out three to earn his first win since June 2. Tommy Layne pitched a scoreless eighth, and Koji Uehara worked a perfect ninth to earn his 14th save.

Pirates 3, White Sox 2

CHICAGO -- Gerrit Cole became the first pitcher in the majors to win 11 games this season, and Pittsburgh held on to beat Chicago.

Pittsburgh extended its season-high winning streak to eight games while completing its eighth series sweep of the season -- the most in the majors. The White Sox lost their seventh consecutive game.

Cole (11-2) silenced Chicago hitters for most of the game. In seven innings, gave up two runs on three hits. He walked three and struck out four.

Indians 4, Cubs 3

CLEVELAND -- Giovanny Urshela's RBI single in the seventh inning drove in the eventual winning run as Cleveland beat Chicago.

Zach McAllister (2-2) struck out four in 1 1/3 innings of scoreless relief to get the win. Bryan Shaw got the last four outs for his first save.

Cleveland closer Cody Allen entered at the end of a long fifth-inning rain delay with the bases loaded, two outs and the score tied 3-3. Allen retired catcher Miguel Montero on a fly ball to escape the threat.

Giants 7, Mariners 0

SEATTLE -- Ryan Vogelsong pitched 6 2/3 innings, and San Francisco took advantage of a Seattle defensive miscue to score three early runs.

Vogelsong (5-5) allowed only three hits in his best outing of June, and then the Giants' bullpen held on against a depleted Seattle lineup. Javier Lopez, Hunter Strickland and Jeremy Affeldt completed the shutout.

San Francisco jumped out to a 3-0 lead with a three-run second inning, scoring all of the runs after Seattle shortstop Brad Miller dropped the ball trying to complete a double-play throw to first.

Dodgers 1, Rangers 0

LOS ANGELES -- Pinch runner Enrique Hernandez scored the winning run on a balk in the bottom of the ninth inning as Los Angeles edged Texas.

Hernandez replaced Yasmani Grandal, who walked against Keone Kela (4-4) to start the bottom of the ninth. Andre Ethier followed with another walk before Alberto Callaspo hit into a double play that sent Hernandez to third base.

With Jimmy Rollins at the plate, Hernandez ran down the line quickly, then stopped. Kela moved his glove as if he were going to throw to the plate but then stopped, and plate umpire Marvin Hudson called the balk.

Tigers-Reds, ppd., rain

CINCINNATI -- The scheduled game at Great American Ball Park was rained out. No makeup date was immediately announced.

Indians' Bourn appeals one-game suspension
By THE SPORTS XCHANGE

Cleveland Indians outfielder Michael Bourn was suspended for one game Thursday and fined an undisclosed sum for making contact with an umpire in a game earlier in the week.

Bourn is appealing the suspension and will continue to play until the appeal is resolved.

Bourn was punished by Major League Baseball for making contact with umpire Phil Cuzzi before the bottom of the fourth inning of the Indians' game against the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field on Tuesday. Bourn was ejected during the altercation.

MLB betting cheat sheet: Morton making it look easy for surging Pirates
By DOC'S SPORTS

Here's a comprehensive look at betting notes for this weekend’s major-league schedule:

Charlie in charge

The Pittsburgh Pirates are a perfect 5-0 in Charlie Morton’s five starts this season. He has turned in two consecutive performances without giving up a single run across a total of 14.1 innings against the Milwaukee Brewers and Chicago Cubs. Morton (5-0, 1.62 ERA) will get the nod on Sunday at the Washington Nationals for the Pirates, who have won seven games in a row.

The silence of the bats

The Chicago White Sox have lost six straight games and have scored a grand total of three runs in their last four. Shortstop Alexei Ramirez is batting .190 in his last six games and right fielder Avisail Garcia is 2-for-25 in his seven most recent contests.

Which Teheran?

Julio Teheran’s ERA is a bloated 5.07 ERA after he gave up six runs in 6.1 innings during the Atlanta Braves’ Tuesday loss at the Boston Red Sox. Teheran has allowed at least three runs in five consecutive starts. But he is a stellar 3-0 with a 2.77 ERA at home, which is where he will face the New York Mets on Sunday.

Pitching Notes

* Jerome Williams (hamstring) just went on the disabled list, but that may not necessarily be a bad thing for the Philadelphia Phillies. Williams (3-7, 6.43 ERA) has an 11.45 ERA in three June starts. Philadelphia has not yet named a starter to face Michael Wacha and the St. Louis Cardinals on Sunday.

* The Cleveland Indians will round out their weekend series against the visiting Tampa Bay Rays with Corey Kluber on Saturday and Trevor Bauer on Sunday. In his last eight starts, Kluber’s ERA has shrunk from 5.04 to 3.54. Bauer has six quality starts in his last seven outings and he is coming off seven innings of scoreless work at the Cubs on Tuesday.

Hitting Notes

* Following Wednesday’s action, Arizona Diamondbacks’ first baseman Paul Goldschmidt had a ridiculous six multi-hit performances in his last seven games. Goldschmidt (.360, 19 HR, 54 RBI) is hitting .396 in June and he has homered three times since last Wednesday.

* The Baltimore Orioles lost to the Philadelphia Phillies 2-1 on Thursday, but offensive struggles are aberrations—not the rules. Baltimore had previously scored at least three runs in eight straight games, including a total of 63 in those eight. Manny Machado, who accounted for his team’s lone run by going deep on Thursday, has nine multi-hit games in June and has five homers in his last eight outings.

Totals Streak

Texas Rangers (29-34-3 O/U): The under is 3-1 in the Rangers’ last four overall and 10-3 in their last 13. They have given up a total of six runs in their last three outings. Next up for Texas is a three-game set against the Chicago White Sox, who are 26-37-1 O/U.

Injury Notes

* Mets’ second baseman Daniel Murphy (.283, 4 HR, 29 RBI) has not played since June 4 because of a quadriceps injury. A weekend return had been targeted, but now New York is looking toward next Tuesday to see Murphy back in the lineup.

* Do not hold your breath for a weekend comeback by Detroit Tigers’ designated hitter Victor Martinez (.216, 1 HR, 15 RBI). The veteran has not played since May 18 due to a knee issue and he does not have a hit since May 10. Martinez is likely to join the club in the Bronx but is not expected to come off the disabled list until next week.

Five To Follow MLB Betting: Friday, June 19, 2015 Opening Line Report
by Alan Matthews

A few weeks ago, I figured the Chicago Cubs would be the St. Louis Cardinals' main competition for the NL Central title. Maybe it still will be the Cubs if they add a starting pitcher. But for now it looks like it will be red-hot Pittsburgh. Entering Thursday's interleague finale, the Bucs have won seven straight and 20 of 25 to cut the Cards' lead over them about in half. During that seven-game win streak, five were by shutout. Francisco Cervelli was behind the plate for over 50 consecutive scoreless innings at one point in that run, the longest such streak by a catcher in nearly 60 years. Who misses Russell Martin? Considering the Pirates started ace Gerrit Cole on Thursday, they have a good chance to go for nine in a row on Friday. Pittsburgh is +500 to win the division. No preview of Pirates game Friday because Washington's pitcher is TBA as of now.

Rangers at White Sox (-190, 7)

Chicago is the biggest opening favorite on the board, which is surprising considering how lousy the Pale Hose are playing. But they are also starting the incomparable Chris Sale (6-3, 3.01). The lanky lefty is working on a string of five straight starts with at least 10 strikeouts (ninth pitcher in MLB history) and four in a row with at least 12. Sale has joined Pedro Martinez (1997, 1999, 2001) and Randy Johnson (1998) as the only pitchers since 1914 to strike out 12+ batters in four consecutive starts. On June 3 in Arlington, Sale shut out the Rangers over seven innings and whiffed 13. He eats Prince Fielder's lunch as Fielder is just 4-for-25 with eight strikeouts against him. Colby Lewis (6-3, 4.37) gets the call for Texas. He faced Chicago on June 2 and allowed two runs over seven innings. He has had three straight quality starts. Jose Abreu is 2-for-6 off him. Adam Eaton just 1-for-10.

Key trends: The Rangers are 1-7 in Lewis' past eight vs. teams with a winning record. The Sox are 6-2 in Sale's past eight at home. The "over/under" has gone over in eight of Lewis' past nine overall. The under is 4-1 in Sale's past five at home.

Early lean: Take Chicago, the under and Sale gets to 10.

Cubs at Twins (+106, 8.5)

How about the big-league debut of top Cubs prospect Kyle Schwarber on Wednesday night? He was 4-for-5 with three runs scored and two RBIs -- yet the Cubs brass swears he is headed back to Triple-A after the teams finishes interleague play this weekend. He will be in there again at DH for this series opener at Minnesota. Kyle Hendricks (2-2, 3.80) gets the start for the Cubs. He has lasted only five innings in his past two starts, but the Cubs have won them both (rain played a role in one of those). Hendricks has never faced the Twins. Minnesota's Phil Hughes (4-6, 4.79) hasn't much resembled last season's very good pitcher but has had back-to-back quality starts, so maybe he's coming around. He has never faced the Cubs. Dexter Fowler is 1-for-3 with a triple off him. David Ross is 3-for-8 with a solo homer -- generally he only plays when Jon Lester starts, but usual catcher Miguel Montero is dealing with a minor injury and is day-to-day.

Key trends: The Cubs have lost four straight on Friday but won four straight Hendricks starts in Game 1 of a series. The Twins are also 0-4 in their past four on Friday. They are 4-0 in Hughes' past four interleague starts. The over is 7-0 in Hendricks' past seven road starts vs. teams with a winning record. The under is 5-1 in Hughes' past six during Game 1 of a series.

Early lean: Cubs and over.

Padres at Diamondbacks (+105, 8.5)

Bad news for San Diego as outfielder Wil Myers, one of the team's big offseason acquisitions, was to undergo surgery on his left wrist Thursday and miss at least two months. Will Venable and Melvin (B.J.) Upton will get the majority of the playing time in center field with Myers out. James Shields (7-0, 3.59) gets the call here for San Diego, and he should be an All-Star. The Padres have lost his last two, but he was excellent last time out, allowing only a run over seven innings vs. the Dodgers. Shields has made one start vs. the Snakes and allowed five runs over six innings in Phoenix on May 8. Paul Goldschmidt is 2-for-3 with a solo homer off him. Thinking Jarrod Saltalamacchia won't be the Arizona catcher in this one as he's 0-for-14 vs. Shields. Arizona's Rubby De La Rosa (5-3, 5.27) comes off the best start of his career, shutting out the Giants over eight innings -- De La Rosa had been rocked in his previous four starts. He is 2-0 with a 2.08 ERA in two starts this season against San Diego. Yangervis Solarte is 3-for-6 with two doubles off him. Yonder Alonso is 1-for-5 with a solo homer.

Key trends: The Padres are 2-6 in their past eight series openers. Arizona has won four straight on Friday. The over is 7-0 in Shields' past seven starts following a quality start in his last appearance. The over is 4-0 in De La Rosa's past four at home.

Early lean: Padres and under.

Red Sox at Royals (-142, 7.5)

Last time Boston rookie left-hander Eduardo Rodriguez (2-1, 3.55) pitched was June 14 at home against Toronto. Previewing that game, I mentioned that Rodriguez had allowed just one earned run in the first three starts of his big-league career but that he hadn't seen an offense like Toronto's yet and the Jays were going to bring him back to earth. They certainly did, roughing up him for nine runs in 4.2 innings. Rodriguez makes his first start against the Royals. Kansas City's Yordano Ventura (3-6, 4.68) hasn't won his past four outings. He left his last start after three innings because Ventura said he was losing sensation in three of his fingers. MRI tests showed fluid buildup was causing irritation of his ulnar nerve. I don't really know what that means, but Ventura had a bullpen session Monday and apparently is fine to go here on a bit of extra rest. Mookie Betts is 2-for-3 with a double and RBI off Ventura. David Ortiz is 0-for-3.

Key trends: The Sox are 0-4 in their past four road games vs. right-handed starters. The Royals are 7-2 in Ventura's past nine series openers. The under is 5-0-1 in his past six overall. Boston has won six of the past seven meetings.

Early lean: Royals and under.

Astros at Mariners (-115, 7)

Houston might be without reigning AL batting champion and second baseman Jose Altuve for a bit. He left Wednesday's game with right hamstring soreness and didn't play Thursday. He had to recently miss three games with that problem as well, so a disabled list stint might be necessary. Altuve is hitting .287 with five homers and 28 RBIs. Houston starts very good rookie right-hander Lance McCullers (3-1, 2.00) in this series opener. His last start was Sunday against these Mariners, and he no-hit them over five shutout innings. He already had thrown 90 pitches, so there was no way the team was going to let him try for an official no-hitter. Mariners left-hander Roenis Elias (3-4, 3.67) was opposite McCullers in that Sunday game, and Elias was shelled for eight runs and seven hits in 3.1 innings, easily his worst outing of the year. Evan Gattis is 4-for-6 with a homer and two RBIs off him. Chris Carter is 1-for-9 with five strikeouts.

Key trends: Houston is 2-6 in its past eight against a lefty. Seattle is 0-7 in Elias' past seven at home. The under is 5-0 in the Astros' past five road games vs. left-handers. The under is 7-0 in Elias' past seven at home. Houston is 6-1 in the past seven meetings.

Early lean: Astros and over.

Bonus Play Friday

ASTROS (McCullers) @ MARINERS (Elias) 10:10 PM

Take: ASTROS -110

I don’t think there’s much question anymore that this Astros team is going to remain in serious playoff contention. Sure, there’s always the chance a team with this much youth and big game inexperience could fold up. But it’s also clear that their confidence level is growing by the day and while they’re mostly a bunch of kids, they’re also really talented.

Houston is in the position that many felt was reserved for the Seattle Mariners. The M’s had a strong 2014 campaign and appeared to have improved themselves some in the off season. Let’s just say things haven’t worked out at all. This is a bad baseball team right now.

Lance McCullers has been a sensation since getting called up and he’ll have a chance to improve on his already very impressive numbers against a soft Mariners lineup. McCullers draws a decent opponent as lefty Roenis Elias has been reasonably effective. Elias has okay stuff and it’s clear that he’s a better pitcher than he was as a rookie, when he seemed overwhelmed at times.

The Mariners are already disadvantaged with the bats and they could be shorthanded again tonight. Kyle Seager missed the Thursday game against the Giants with food poisoning and Robinson Cano’s back is causing him problems right now. The availability of both players is in question as this is written.

The ‘Stros come roaring in off a strong series win over the Rockies. There’s a bit of downside here as Houston has not been especially potent vs. lefties on the road. But even in their worst role, the Astros still show better numbers than the Mariners.

Better pitcher, better offense, and much better current form are all on the same side here. Add in the possibility of a patchwork Seattle lineup with the unknown status of Seager and Cano, and I’m pegging the Astros as the Friday Bonus Play.

Baltimore Orioles vs Toronto Blue Jays

Bonus Play Toronto Blue Jays

I'm recommending a play on the Blue Jays on Friday. Baltimore has struggled on the road at the plate all season, ranking in the bottom-third in the categories I value the most, including OBP. Meanwhile, the Jays have been at or near the top this season, in the month of June, and at home in the same categories. I bring up the offenses right out of the blocks because both starting pitchers had their share of problems last time out. I believe Orioles' hurler Mike Wright is worse off, though. After pitching 14 1/3 innings of shutout baseball in his first two starts, the right-hander has been knocked around in his last three, allowing 13 earned runs, 24 base runners, and four home runs in just 14 innings. Marco Estrada owned a 3.78 ERA in 13 appearances before his last outing. But it looked to me like the righty simply lost his focus. The Jays went into the bottom of the 5th with a 10-0 lead over Boston and Estrada gave up five runs. But I expect him to bounce back in this one, thanks to the lineup he's facing and also due to the offensive support I believe he's going to get at the plate. The Jays enter on a 20-6 run as home chalk and they're 13-3 in their last 16 games, overall. Meanwhile, the Orioles are on a 2-10 slide on the road against teams with a winning record. I'm recommending a play on the Blue Jays on Friday. Thanks & GL! Scott Spreitzer.

Game of the Day: Pirates at Nationals

Pittsburgh Pirates at Washington Nationals (OFF, OFF)

The struggling Washington Nationals may have to start a three-game home series against the red-hot Pittsburgh Pirates on Friday without slugger Bryce Harper. The 22-year-old, who boasts 22 homers and 53 RBIs, suffered what was deemed a mild hamstring strain before leaving in the sixth inning of Thursday’s 5-3 loss to Tampa Bay and will be re-evaluated Friday.

The Nationals have dropped 14 of their last 20 games and managed just three runs in their last two games after scoring 16 at Tampa Bay on Tuesday. Injury-plagued Washington must find a way to raise its level of play against the Pirates, who have won a season-high eight straight contests after a 3-2 victory against the Chicago White Sox on Thursday. Pittsburgh has allowed only six earned runs during its streak and owns a major league-best 1.75 ERA in June. Josh Harrison has hit safely in eight straight contests (16-for-35) and Andrew McCutchen is 9-for-23 during a six-game run for the Pirates.

TV: 7:05 p.m. ET, ROOT (Pittsburgh), MASN2 and WUSA 9 (Washington)

LINE HISTORY: Lines have yet to be posted with the status of Bryce Harper unconfirmed.

INJURY REPORT: Pirates – 2B Neil Walker (Ques-Virus) Nationals – LF Bryce Harper (Doub-Hamstring)

WHAT CAPPERS SAY: “The home team has dominated this series, winning seven of the past eight meetings. However, the Pirates enter in excellent current form and they have one of the most underrated pitchers this season on the mound. A.J. Burnett has quietly put together a fantastic 1.89 ERA and 1.13 WHIP in his 13 starts. He pitched nine scoreless innings last Sunday and he has pitched at least 7 innings or more in six of his past eight outings.” – Steve Merril

PITCHING MATCHUP: Pirates RH A.J. Burnett (6-2, 1.89 ERA) vs. Nationals RH Joe Ross (1-1, 3.46)

Burnett has been quite unlucky in his last two starts, allowing one run and 10 hits combined over 16 innings without gaining a victory, after winning the previous six. The 38-year-old Arkansas native, who owns 161 career wins, is 4-0 with a 2.51 ERA in seven road starts in 2015. Anthony Rendon is 7-for-16 with three homers and nine RBIs against Burnett, who is 12-5 in 23 appearances (22 starts) with a 3.19 ERA versus the Nationals.

Ross has yielded five runs and 13 hits in his first 13 innings in the big leagues, splitting a pair of starts. The 22-year-old California native struck out eight and threw 108 pitches while permitting two runs over eight frames to beat Milwaukee last Saturday and has walked one batter overall. Ross, who was drafted in 2011 by San Diego in the first round, was 2-2 in nine starts with Double-A Harrisburg before being recalled.

TRENDS:

*Pirates are 6-0 in their last 6 vs. a team with a winning record.
*Nationals are 0-6 in their last 6 home games vs. a right-handed starter.
*Under is 10-1 in Pirates last 11 overall.
*Over is 5-0 in Nationals last 5 games following a loss.

Holy $hit betting stat of the day: It’s always Sonny when Gray faces Angels
By Andrew Avery

Oakland A’s ace Sonny Gray has been excellent against the Los Angeles Angels throughout his career, but this season he’s taken his dominance to new levels.

In three starts against the Halos in 2015, Gray has a record of 3-0, an ERA of 1.19 and WHIP of 0.706. The righty has given up just three earned runs in 22 2/3 innings of work against the A’s AL West rivals.

Gray was stellar over 7 2/3 innings in his last start against the Angels on June 14. He surrendered one run (unearned) on five hits while fanning nine.

In nine career appearances (eight starts) against L.A., Gray is 5-1 with a 2.11 ERA and 0.95 WHIP.

Gray’s numbers are staggeringly good overall this season. He has a personal record of 8-3 (Oakland is 8-6 straight up in his 14 starts), a 1.60 ERA and 0.93 WHIP heading into Friday’s start against the Angels.

The A’s are presently -154 at home Friday, while the Angels, who are expected to counter with Matt Shoemaker on the bump, are +142.

Hope you did not put the house on the over Thursday

If you went to your sportsbook of choice and blindly slapped money down on the under in every game Thursday, you walked away with some cash in your pocket. Of the 14 games to take to the diamond Thursday, 10 ended up going below the closing total (3-10-1 over/under).
