At the Gate - Friday
By Mike Dempsey

With field size already a challenge at the inner meeting at Aqueduct, the New York racing Association is now banning horses form shipping in from Finger Lakes.

A horse was discovered to have strangers, which is a high contagious fatal respiratory illness. Dr. Anthony Verderosa, NYRA’s chief examining veterinarian, told The Daily Racing Form “a strangles quarantine lasts 14 days, but they haven’t started counting yet because they still have active cases. As soon as they don’t have any more active cases – which means fever and symptomatic horses – then they’ll start counting.”

For Friday’s card that means the Michael Ferraro trained Smitten by Gold will have to scratch out of the third place, reducing the field to five, with four betting interests. We have already seen three four-horse fields at the meeting.

Saturday’s card could be affected, as it appears that six or seven runners that are entered are based at Finger Lakes.

We will not have to worry about short fields on opening day at Gulfstream Park on Saturday. There are 142 horse entered on the 10 race card which features the Claiming Crown with $1 million up for grabs.

Here is today’s opening race from Aqueduct to get the day off to a good start:

AQU Race 1 Clm $20,000N3L (12:20 ET)
4 Bigger Picture 5-2
6 Gaining Ground 5-1
1 Solly's Mischief / 1a Hudson Miracle 2-1
5 Born in Brooklyn 3-1

Analysis: Bigger Picture made a mild late rally to finish fourth last out as the beaten favorite against $35,000 non-winners of three on the turf. He has a second and a third in his two trips on dirt and broke his maiden over poly at Turfway Park back in January. The Rice barn is 26% winners moving runners from turf to dirt.

Gaining Ground stretches out to a route after checking in fifth last out going 6 1/2 furlongs on the main track here against $35,000 non-winners of three. The winner, third and fourth place finishers all exited that brace to win next out. He should be forwardly placed in a race without much early speed signed up. Decent value if he goes off near his 5-1 morning line.

Wagering
WIN: #4 to win at 2-1 or better.
EX: 4,6 / 1,4,5,6
TRI: 4,6 / 1,4,5,6 / 1,2,4,5,6

Today’s Featured Race of the Day from Aqueduct:

AQU Race 8 OClm $40,000N2X (3:43 ET)
11 Quick Money 4-1
10 Leilani's Ticket 6-1
8 Longfor the City 12-1
4 N.F.'s Destiny 9-2

Analysis: Quick Money set the early fractions, opened up a clear lead and was nailed late, missing by a neck against $17,500 claimers. The gelding was claimed out of the race by the RRod barn that is 29% winners (with a +ROI) first off the claim. He steps up in class but has beaten tougher than these and loves the inner track, landing in the money in 10 of 16 trips over the surface.

Leilani's Ticket tracked the early pace and drifted out inside the final furlong in a runner up finish last out at this level. The colt was claimed out of his last outing by the Contessa barn that is 9% winners first off the claim. The colt has three runners up finishes in five trips on the inner track and does have a habit of landing for minor shares. Decent value if he goes off near his 6-1 morning line.

Wagering
WIN: #11 to win at 3-1 or better.
EX: 10,11 / 4,8,10,11
TRI: 10,11 / 4,8,10,11 / 1,4,8,10,11

Live Longshots:
These are price plays for exotic players looking to find a couple of extra contenders to use in their trifecta and superfecta wagers. Or for those with smaller bankrolls, you might want to get in a small win-place wager.

Aqueduct
R2: #2 Shewreckstheplace 8-1
R4: #3 Culminating 8-1
R5: #2 Pra Vida Zen 8-1
R6: #4 Rock On Chacho 10-1
R6: #2 Manofire 12-1
R8: #8 Longfor the City 12-1
R9: #4 Jackson N Leonard 12-1

Good luck today!

DRF HARNESS

Race 4 - $50,000 Guaranteed Pick Four Pool

Best Bet: VAL DI NOTO (8th)

Spot Play: P L HURRICANE (4th)

Race 1

(9) FROSTY DELIGHT comes from the Baillargeon barn, shows quick gate-speed and finished a game second last week in this class. (1) TOMEI SEELSTER draws the rail, gets Jamieson in the bike and comes from a high percentage barn. (3) MAJOR HANOVER doesn't like to win, but draws inside and offers terrific gate-speed. She's a good option for the triactor at a price.

Race 2

(3) LATOKA went a tough trip last week from an outside post, but managed to finish third. He's got a solid record coming into this event and comes from the Cirasuola barn. (6) STONEBRIDGE RICH has been much better as of late and was a game third in the Autumn Final last week. (4) STUARTS DYNASTY is carrying a two race win streak and offers terrific gate-speed to be well positioned.

Race 3

(7) JABAS LUCK has won three straight and looks like the obvious choice in here. (3) DAZZLE N DELIGHT draws inside, offers quick closing speed and has been a main threat at this class for many weeks. She will offer a low price. (8) EXHILARATED comes from the Fellows barn and just missed last week in this class as 23-1.

Race 4

(1) P L HURRICANE won this contest last week and has been at his best recently. (9) DEBBIES MACH comes out of the Autumn Series, shows 1:54 speed and comes from the Puddy barn. (7) WILDCAT MAGIC has been drawing outside as of late, but is versatile and is a price option to kick off the early Pick 4.

Race 5

(5) TIME TO QUIT comes from the Auciello barn, has a solid record this season and likely will offer a low price in this wide-open tilt. (9) COLD CERTIFIED has some back class to offer and finished a game second last week at this level. (4) STANDING MY GROUND gets much needed post relief and drops into this bottom level.

Race 6

(4) MARQUISE DE SARAH qualified well in her return and will make her first start for trainer Dave Menary. (8) D GS PESQUERO has all kinds of back class to offer, comes from the Moreau barn and is fresh off a win. (1) WILDCAT BEAUTY has hit the board in four of her last five starts and has been the picture of consistency this season.

Race 7

(7) MY GAL MATTIE raced well to finish third last week in her return. I expect her to be better this start. (2) MACHNBYRD PRINCESS hasn't won yet this season from 16 starts, but has some back class to offer and drops into this bottom level. (1) ADAYMER SEELSTER draws the rail, gets Jamieson in the bike and closed strongly last week.

Race 8

(2) VAL DI NOTO draws well and will be the heavy favourite as she debuts for the Moreau barn and gets Filion in the bike. (4) A FEARLESS AFFAIR is fresh off a win and has hit the board in each of her last four starts. (7) SWINGING CAMI comes from the Alagna barn, gets James MacDonald in the bike and is searching for her first win of the season.

Race 9

(6) ABC MUSCLES BOY has won four straight and is the horse to beat in this dash. (1) LUCK IS ALL I NEED draws inside for Team McNair and has been much better in her last two. (4) TOSCA has the speed, comes from the Per Henriksen barn and was a beaten favourite last start in this class.

Race 10

(7) AMERICAN IN PARIS is the queen of this class with three straight wins. (3) WAASMULA has won two of her last three, draws inside and is on top of her game right now. (1) MARLEE B has been very consistent all season, offers versatility and has hit the board in each of her last three.

Race 11

(8) BAROCKEY has terrific gate-speed and has been racing very strongly as of late in this class. (6) MIA SEELSTER drops in class, starts in the middle of the gate and is a price option. (4) BOAT HOUSE ROW has hit the board in four of her last five starts, draws well and gets Jamieson in the bike.

DRF HARNESS

Race 1 - $30,000 Guaranteed Pick Five Pool

Race 3 - $25,000 Guaranteed Pick Four Pool

Race 7 - $50,000 Guaranteed Pick Four Pool

MEET STATS: 17 - 78 / $81.00 BEST BETS: 3 - 5 / $10.00

Best Bet: BABY REMIND ME (2nd)

Spot Play: MARIE ANTOINETTE (4th)

Race 1

(7) PROPULSION is simply faster than tonight’s competition. Unless he is raced ultra conservatively, he’ll win easily. (4) COUNTRY GIRL AS comes off a decent mile from post 10 and now adds the nation’s top driver in Yannick Gingras. (6) DRESS FOR SUCCESS raced better with Lasix added and now gets a catch-driver as well.

Race 2

(4) BABY REMIND ME raced very well for second in a fast mile last time. She looks like an obvious 3-5 shot. (8) WITCH DALI comes down from Canada for trainer Tony Alagna and qualified well. She has the early speed to make some noise. (2) HEX makes her career debut off a good learning mile.

Race 3

(1) THAT WOMAN HANOVER blitzed a weaker field a week ago and certainly looks poised for a repeat effort. (4) A LA NOTTE HANOVER raced rather well last week considering she had missed a month of action. A small step forward could get her involved. (7) DO YOUR JOB has the early speed to get involved; maybe. (6) SCANDALICIOUS comes off a good mile.

Race 4

(6) MARIE ANTOINETTE qualified without the hobbles for new trainer Capone and kept her mind on business. This is a suspect group and there are enough angles to take a shot. (2) NATURAL KEMP returned from four months on the shelf with a good second-place effort; adds Tetrick. (5) SUPERIORCOURT will have to step up his game, but at least he is 12 for 18 in the money this year.

Race 5

(6) ANNAPOLIS made the mistake of pulling the pocket last time, though she probably wouldn’t have won regardless. New driver Ron Pierce is likely to get more out of her. (2) PASSING JETTA got caught in a fast mile last time; this field is slower. (1) KEYSTONE SADIE comes off a decent effort and gets a better post.

Race 6

(6) MOJARRA HANOVER was a decent second last time at Freehold and has won here in the past. This race is filled with question marks. (2) HAYWORTH BLUE CHIP switches to the big track and adds Tetrick; helps? (3) JANIE BAY gets her nose on the gate after starting from post 12 in a 1 1/8 mile race last time.

Race 7

This is probably the best race on the card; very competitive. (3) TEAM SIX looked super winning against lesser company last week; staying here. (5) UPFRONT BILLY closed well at long odds most recently and figures to get a healthy pace to set him up. (9) MISTERY WOMAN gets a driver change to Pierce; very capable. (2) IL MAGO has early speed and an inside post.

Race 8

(4) POWER PACK HANOVER sort of seemed like she was spinning her wheels in the stretch, but it was her first start of the year. She was also all over the track, so look for equipment changes before heading to the window. (7) PAN LUIS OBISPO has been racing fairly well and does get to drop down in class. (9) CLEAR VIEW HANOVER & (8) CLORIS HANOVER are also facing easier; worth using.

Race 9

(5) TIME WILL TELL ALL comes off a nice mile and seems to be trending upward. (2) REVRAC HARBOUR & (1) LINDY’S TRU GRIT are getting class relief; threats.

Race 10

(3) HARBOR POINT is sitting on a win and only needs a smooth journey to get over the top. (8) ODDS ON AMETHYST exits the Breeders Crown, so this group is obviously easier. His odds will be too low to love on top. (1) GUILTYWITHANEXCUSE should save ground and get a nice piece.

Race 11

(7) SET ME UP hasn’t been able to rally from outside posts at Yonkers against some good Open Handicap competition. I can see Gingras gunning off the gate on the bigger track. (6) MATTIE TERROR GIRL bested a few of these last time with a strong stretch kick. (4) MONTENEGRO just missed to the former last time and could be sitting a close-up trip this week.

Race 12

(3) BRING THEM HOME couldn’t last the extra distance after taking plenty of air on the rim last week. Six-year-old mare has every right to be a bit sharper in her second start for this barn. (7) MISS MACHQUEEN drops down a class and looks like the one to beat. (5) BROOKLYNS BEST displayed pace at both ends of her most recent race.

Race 13

(7) FOX VALLEY LEGEND ships in sharp from Pocono and seems to do his best work at the end of the mile. The extra eighth in distance should work to his favor. (4) BALLAGIO HANOVER raced better with Lasix added. He draws well this week and could take another step forward. (9) WHATNBLAZES won at this level last time and apparently gets a free ride. (10) DREAMS OF THUNDER picks up Pierce and could be firing off the wings of the gate.

DRF HARNESS

MEET STATS: 362 - 1368 / $2,428.00 BEST BETS: 30 - 112 / $137.20

Best Bet: SAYITALL BB (6th)

Spot Play: CLEM (7th)

Race 1

(3) WHITE SPORTSCOAT Philly invader has good speed and good to see Bartlett with the call. (4) SAMS TREASURE Gelding is knocking at the door and appears to be a threat in here. (2) DINNER GUEST was second best in his last try.

Race 2

(1) CAMPANILE gets class relief, moves to the fence and she has some early zip; the pick. (7) HOT LIST Easy score at Philly last time out. (5) CRAZY ON YOU fits with this group so watch out.

Race 3

(2) HES GOT IT moves down the ladder and that should help his cause; ready to roll. (1) SWEET WATER JACK might fare well from the fence. (5) CORKY BARAN could grab a share.

Race 4

(8) BORN TO ROCKN ROLL was second best in his latest. Gelding has a tough post but is very capable of getting the job done. (3) LIGHTNING STRIKE took the pocket route home to victory in his most recent trip. (6) ADDWATER put in a mild bid last time out.

Race 5

(1) DOUBLESHOTASCOTCH has tactical speed and the move to the rail slot might put this guy back into the winner's circle. (5) DEEP SEA HANOVER could contend in here if he receives a better trip. (6) HEMERS CARD SHARK will clearly be the one to catch.

Race 6

(6) SAYITALL BB Breeders crown victor is very sharp and by far is the one to deny. (1) GROUNDED has wheeled off two straight victories. (5) ROBIN CRUISER completes the trifecta.

Race 7

(5) CLEM Very sharp gelding has hit the board in his last four. Threat to boss these at his best. (3) CASHENDASH HANOVER was nailed for win honors last time out. (1) JOHNNY Z rallied strongly for the show spot. Could contend from the rail slot.

Race 8

(4) JOHNS POLYVIEW was used up in the early stages in his recent trip. Maybe he will have enough gas in the tank and top these down the road. (1) HE ROCKS THE MOON Gelding gets serious post relief and Kakaley stays aboard. (6) ALLSTAR PARTNER Drops in class seeking his first score of the year.

Race 9

(1) ALL STIENAM made a nice run for the place spot last out and this gelding appears to be ready to make tonight a winning one. (4) LAUXMONT CAPRI just missed the victory in his latest. (2) FLIPPER J could have a say from the 2-hole.

Race 10

(3) GIDDY UP DELIGHT closed strongly to grab the show spot. If he could return to his 11/21 trip, the rest will have to settle for the place money. (1) LATE NITE FLIGHT moves from the 8-hole to the fence; main danger. (3) TY SEELSTER put in a nice run for win honors last week.

Race 11

(1) LEAVEUMLADY Philly shipper is back at Yonkers. Has good speed and she have every right to pounce and score. (7) STAR KEEPER Pacing miss put in a mild rally last time out. (3) HARMONY OAKS QUIKE She is knocking at the door; beware.

Race 12

(7) CAMILLE moves down the scale, has fine speed and is the pick over this group. (5) LETS GO HIGHER faced better last time out; main danger. (4) HANDSOFFMYCUPCAKE should be right square in the mix.

Mr. Vegas

Mr. Vegas Free Friday NBA pick 12/05:

Can't see the Spurs running with the defensive-oriented Memphis Grizzlies, especially on their home court. San Antonio is on a 14-6 run under the total and the under is 5-1 in the Spurs last 6 road games vs. a team with a winning home record.

Play the Spurs/Grizzlies under the total.

Comp NBA Pick for Friday, December 5, 2014: 7:35 PM EST

(809) CLEVELAND CAVALIERS VS (810) TORONTO RAPTORS

Take: (810) TORONTO RAPTORS.

Reason: Your Bonus Play for Friday, December 5, 2014 is in the NBA scheduled game between the Cavaliers and Raptors in Toronto. The Cavaliers are 5-12 ATS in their last 17 road games vs. a team with a home winning percentage of greater than .600 and they face the best of the East in Toronto. Cleveland is not a sharp defensive team, 23rd in field goal shooting defense. Toronto is 2nd in the NBA in points scored, 16th in points allowed. Lowry scored a season-high 39 points on 13-of-22 shooting to help the Raptors beat Utah 123-104 on Wednesday night, handing the Jazz their seventh straight loss. The Raptors are 6-2 ATS in their last 8 vs. the Eastern Conference. Play Toronto.

Florida International vs. Louisville

Bonus Play Florida International +30

Most places have this at +29.5 but +30 is out there. Louisville is off a nice win at home against Ohio State and plays Indiana next so they could have a letdown. FIU did lose by 29 last year to the Cardinals but hopefully they can stay within 25 to 29 points on Friday night.

Northern Illinois vs. Bowling Green

1* Bonus Play Northern Illinois -6.5

They get revenge from last year's shocking loss to Bowling Green in the championship game. They lost that game because they could not stop the pass, and Bowling Green's defense was a lot better. Not going to happen this year without Matt Johnson at QB as their passing offense was top 20 last year and 97th this year. Bowling Green's defense is also not very good ranking 100th vs. the run and 85th vs. the pass. They truly have benefited from a lousy MAC East it's almost as if they won the league by default.

The MAC East has also not played well vs. the MAC West going 3-16 this year including Bowling Green who is 0-3 losing by 12, 17, and 7 and Northern Illinois beat all 3. Northern Illinois 2 losses came against the two teams that could stop the run in Central Michigan and Arkansas. You must know by now that Northern Illinois will run the ball and play mistake free football. Bowling Green has only allowed 4.06 ypc in conference play, but 6.21 ypc in losses and the teams they shut down were teams that really could not move the football on the ground. Northern Illinois also has a threat at QB in Hare who only had 1 interception.

In fact Northern Illinois had just 10 turnovers all year. Most of the games Bowling Green was able to beat came by getting turnovers. Hare won't turn the ball over and Northern Illinois will dominate in the red zone as Bowling Green's offense is only converting 46% of the time. It just won't be enough to get it done against a team that has far better recruits and talent on the field.
