Pittsburgh vs. Minnesota
Take Pittsburgh Steelers
Was last weeks effort at home against the Bears more of a quick fix, or did the Steelers really put it all back together after dropping their three prior contests? I choose the latter and I love the way this game has been set up. The Vikings have enjoyed themselves immensely the last six weeks of the season as they steamrolled most of their opponents on its way to a stellar 6-0 mark SU and ATS. But now it gets tricky. Now they actually have to face a team that’s well equipped on both sides of the ball to give the Vikes their stiffest challenge in weeks. The Steelers are the most balanced offensive team their defense will have seen in weeks. Many will tell you that the play of QB Brad Johnson is the reason why the Vikes dramatically turned their season around, but I beg to differ. The defense has played some exceptional ball, and has put its offense in phenomenal field position by forcing numerous turnovers. That’s not going to happen today as the Steelers batter the Vikes with its ruthless ground attack led by a dominating O-Line that will get to the second level and wipe out a rather weak LB corps. Pitt is an unblemished 23-0 SU when it rushes for more than 100 yards and the Vikes rush “D” has given up 112 YPG on the year vs. a rather unimpressive crop of backs the last month or so. On the other side of the ball, expect the Steelers to attack the Vikes O-Line with a number of blitzes and force the slow footed Johnson to make quicker decisions while running for his life. The Vikes have gotten fat on much lesser opponents throughout their winning streak, and I foresee their success coming to a screeching halt this afternoon.
George Smeader's Free Pick
Carolina vs. New Orleans
Take Carolina Panthers
Carolina will come out with everything to play for while the Saints are ready for the off-season. While a banged up Panthers defense gave up 20 to Tampa Bay at home last week, for the most part they have been playing good defense holding opponents to 6, 9, 13, 3, 14, and 13 prior to last week. The Panther's offense has become a tad predictable and as a result they have been held in check for the past 6 weeks. They are expected to score a healthy 24 pts but not to explode for 30 thus keeping the game Under while they (Carolina) beats the spread. Aaron Brooks is benched and Todd Baumann gets the start at QB. Baumann should not be as turnover prone as Brooks, but he also doesn't have the potential to explode like Brooks can do, on occasion.
