For me, I will go with (prob more than 10):

Jordan
Bird
Nicklaus
Tiger
Olazabel (The guy is a true magician with clubs - you should watch him hit 2,3 balls at once) (NEver won like he should have)
Elway
Brady
LT
Phil Mahre
Pele
Romario
Lebron
Lemieux
Rocket Ismail
Cant recall the strikers name who played for AC Milan about 3 years ago, but phenomenal...

You guys are lucky. My list includes Nomar Garciaparra, Manny Alexander, Damon Buford, Dontrelle Willis, Jared Zabransky, Korey Hall, Colledge, David Carr, and Legadu Nannee. Not quite as impressive.

Other memories

I once met Walter Dukes at the old Boston Garden. He was one of the first 7 footers in the NBA and played for the Pistons. I tried to get his autograph after a game and he was sweating like hell, I had a program for him to sign but huge drops of sweat were dropping off his face and shoulders onto the program that it became soaked in seconds and the pen wouldn't work. I was around 10 years old.

mccarthydukeswalter.jpg

A young Walter Dukes with an autograph I never could get.

Later after I grew up I used to occasionally visit a bar owned by then retired Celtic forward and enforcer Jungle Jim Luscatoff, he won 7 rings as a Celtic reserve. Plenty of pro atheletes, especially Celtics hung out there and I met a bunch of them in street clothes, many like Tommy Heinsohn were retired by the mid 70s when I was going to the place. For the life of me I can't recall the name of the bar. Luscy actually has a banner hanging from the new Boston Garden but it says Luscy not 18 which was his number and later worn by the great Dave Cowens and then the number went to the rafters.

Gino Capppeletti the old Patriots placekicker and split end had a bar/restaurant called The Point After but I ony went to it a few times and don't remember meeting any players.

Oddity: Gino is the only AFL/NFL Player to run for a 2 point conversion, throw a pass for a 2 point conversion, catch a pass, intercept a pass, return a punt and a kickoff in the same season.

No particular order with the possible exception of Williams.

1. Ted Williams (at very end of his career)
2. Mickey Mantle (Yankees visting Fenway multiple times back when I was a kid)
3. Bobby Orr (many times)
4. Bill Russell (many times)
5. Wilt Chamberlain (Old Philly Warriors playing Celts several times at Boston Garden in early 60s.)

The above group is a list of players who I saw play in person, all in Boston.

Players at I saw perform at other venues, mainly Las Vegas and Los Angeles.

6. Kareem Abdul Jabbar (when Utah Jazz played some home games in Las Vegas)
7. Jack Nicklaus at the LA Open at Riveria back in the mid 70s.
8. Magic Johnson (same as Jabbar, they both played in the game at Thomas and Mack in Vegas when Kareem set the all time NBA scoring record on April 5th. 1984)
9. Mean Joe Green, Super Bowl XIV against Rams in Rose Bowl Jan. 20th. 1980. Not to mention the other Steeler HOFers on that team.
10. Dan Fouts in San Diego while playing QB for the Chargers in mid 80s. Against the Cleveland Browns who had Ozzie Newsome at the time (he should be on this list). Browns won in overtime.

I think it's a bit of a stretch to call Dan Fouts an athlete.

I think it's a bit of a stretch to call Dan Fouts an athlete.

Fouts_Dan_Induction_180-220.jpg

NFL Hall of Famer Dan Fouts. Class of 1993 first year of eligibility.

Dan Fouts, an All-Pac 8 quarterback at the University of Oregon, was the third-round draft pick of the San Diego Chargers in 1973. He played for the Chargers for 15 seasons before retiring after the 1987 campaign.
Although the 6-3, 204-pounder battled injuries for much of his career, he played a major role in transforming the Chargers from also-rans to AFC Western division champions in 1979, 1980 and 1981. While he never led his team to a Super Bowl, Fouts nevertheless won widespread acclaim as one of the truly outstanding passers of his era.

In 15 seasons, Fouts completed 3,297 passes for 43,040 yards and 254 touchdowns and an 80.2-point rating. He also rushed for 476 yards and scored 13 touchdowns. At the time of his retirement, he was one of only three quarterbacks to pass for more than 40,000 yards. He led the NFL in passing yardage four straight years from 1979 to 1982, and became the first player in history to throw for 4,000 yards in three consecutive seasons.

Fouts was the AFC Player of the Year in 1979 and then, in 1982, he was named the NFL Most Valuable Player by the Pro Football Writers of America, the AFC Player of the Year by United Press International and the NFL Offensive Player of the Year by Associated Press. He was also an All-Pro choice in 1979, 1982, and 1985 and All-AFC in 1979 and 1982.
He played in six Pro Bowls in a seven-year span. In both 1980 and 1981, Fouts led the Chargers to the AFC championship game. The Oakland Raiders defeated the Chargers 34-27 in 1980 in spite of Fouts' 336-yard, two-touchdown passing performance. The 1981 AFC title game was played in 59-below-zero wind chill conditions. Still, Fouts completed 15 passes for 185 yards and the Chargers’ only touchdown, a 33-yard pass to Kellen Winslow, in a hard-fought loss to the Cincinnati Bengals.

OK, I may have been a little sarcastic. And yes, his performance in the 81 title game in Cincy was gutty, no doubt. (I think he had permanent frostbite damage as a result of that game.)

But come on, you could have thrown for 2500 yards in Coryell's offense. I mean, when Fouts was hurt, and the mediocre Mark Hermann stepped in, HE was regularly throwing for about 300 yards a game.

Not who I was thinking of........

It is a baseball player though and one who I believe is the best I've ever seen in person in this particular sport(never seen Bonds, Williams, Mays, F. Robinson in person).

Attended an All Star game at RFK 1969 or 70 there abouts.

Went to many a Senators game with dad so saw many an AL and Ted Williams was the manager.

Saw every NFL team come through Candlestick since 1981.

Went to numerous Giants and A's games since 1976.

Been to every major Ca. race track.

I've seen a few of the greats.
