Here's a hotel that was owned in part by such legends as Frank Sinatra,Dean Martin,Sammy Davis,Jr...Peter Lawford....and the rest of the Rat Pack.....Well, here's the story of the last time I was there...with my buddy Will Garb, winner of the $200k World Series of Harness Handicapping @ Northfield...1989.......We entered Mike Lavines "World Cup of thouroughbred Handicapping at the Sands 1995......3 day affair with around 150 entrants....I was hanging around 15th position after 2 Days..but way out of first...I hit a horse at Fairgrounds the last day that went off at 30-1..or so I thought ...When the numbers went up the muthf..r paid $85.60 to Win and yours truly in in 2nd place barely behind the point leader that had to leave the nite before!!!.........I thought I needed more points to win it but the next few contest horses I bet go dead..One last bullet and Will Garb tells me I am cold as ice and tells me to play a 10 yr old grey horse @ 5-1 odds to win the whole freagin enchilada.....I place the contest money $200WPS on this old timer and he gets on the front end in a mile affair ....I'm dying and up to the stretch the SOB has 1 length lead and now it looks like the charge of the light brigade..Boy, was I fucked!.....I'm thinking I win 5ok if this horse wins and there's a horse on the inside and outside and this 10 yr old guys' age is startin to show...Its a tight photo at the wire and I fall off my table ..knock maybe 5 or 6 drinks on some poor bastard and I am lying on the ground asking Willy Garb if the grey ghost held on with 3 noses on the wire..3 minute photo they put the plugs # up and the next AM Mike Lavine is handing me a 77k check for the last contest at the Sands before they blew the place up....We partied the next few days....Fond Memories..

Back in 1969, I was selling Mutual Funds for a company. They had a contest for selling a new mutual fund that had just come out, the Neuwirth Fund. If you sold $250,000 of the fund you got a free trip to Vegas. I was 24 at the time and had never been to sin city. Sure enough, I wound up qualifying for the Vegas trip.

Our company went first class and put us up at Caesers for the Thur-Sunday trip. Each night we were there, we had a dinner show for entertainment. First night was the topless one at the Stardust. Second night was Dianne Carroll and someone else at the Sands. Getting bored with the show, my wife and I took a walk around the casino. There seemed to be an abnormal amount of people around the craps table. We walked over to see what was going on as everyone was screaming and yelling. Turns out there were two guys from New York that were up around 70 grand. We watched for a while as they continued their hot roll. We then went to another table right behind this one, and some woman threw out a "redbird" ($5 chip) on boxcars(12). She said, "this one's for dinner guys!" Sure enough those two 6's came rolling out. She collected her money and started walking away when the pit man told her she still had $5 riding on the 12. Did she want to pick it up? Let it ride she said. Sure enough two 6's come out again. What a dinner she must have had that night. This one she picked up and gave that plus two greens to the "boys"!

Worked at the SANDS for over 2 years(1989-91), serving as supervisor/oddsmaker in the sportsbook.

Of the four hotel/casinos that I was privledged to work at, the SANDS was by far and away the favorite taking everything into consideration.

For such a relatively large casino, got to know well over half of the employees that worked on the casino floor....from the bartenders, security guards, dealers, etc.,etc.

In my tenure there, there were tremendous quality individuals working at the sporstbook and the various bars.

One of my fondest memories working there was when the casino threw a birthday party for the late great boxer MAX SCHMELLING that I was able to attend for complimentary on the house. Everybody who was anybody in the world of boxing attended the party. Was just a few feet away when Mike Tyson met Max for the firsttime, prompting Iron Mike to say "Nice to meet you Champ".

The SANDS to me will probably go down in my book as my ALL-TIME favorite casino.

Back in the 60's Vegas souveniers started appearing in my house from fam&rels and half of them were "Sands" marked (ashtrays, candydishes, coasters, etc) and as a kid it became my favorite LV place for no particular reason other than that. My first trek out to LV I made it to the Sands and it was satisfying. My second time out to LV the Sands was gone.
