PENDLETON - The flag football program at Eastern Oregon Correctional Institution has been ejected for unnecessary roughness.

Inmates were notified this month that the activity has been dropped because of injuries that have cost taxpayers thousands of dollars.

Though injuries happen in every sport, the ones associated with football were more severe, prison officials said.

Tony Santos, the prison superintendent said seven players went to the emergency room in one weekend, and Doug Harder, a prison spokesman, said at least double that made emergency room visits last season.

To make up for the loss of football, volleyball will be introduced, the softball season will be extended through October and there will be tables set out for chess and checkers, Santos said.
