please........RAI tv (italy's state tv) is as left-wing as they come.....
anyone who's every been in the army knows that all artillery units have access to WP (white phosphorous) rounds....
this was never a secret....we've had them for decades.
WP rounds are used for obscuration and illumination missions and also target identification.
yes, they can be deadly...they do have high burn-rates and if they're dropped on top of you, you're not going to have a chance...
but if the u.s. army wanted to kill innocent civilians randomly they would have just dropped HE (high explosive) rounds, NOT WP rounds...
HE rounds are better at mass destruction...
iraqi civilians were so close to insurgent dug-in positions (remember, the insurgents were holed up in houses, schools, mosques, etc.) that it's no surprise that a lot of civilians got caught in the crossfire....
it's a war....it's not an exact science, never has been, never will be.
to suggest that the u.s. army targeted civilians with WP rounds...and then trying to associate WP rounds with some type of chemical weapon or WMD, is ridiculous.
it just shows that RAI tv and the european media has no understanding of artillery munitions or common military tactics.
unfortunately, i used to be stationed at aviano air base, italy and was forced to endure 3 years of RAI "news" on my tv set.
