ESPN has known for several weeks that Woods would be here this week, yet they are showing more of the first 2 rounds than they ever have..

Outside of the British Open, I cant ever remember golf coming on at 9 am.

The key isn't how much golf they are showing, it's how the ratings are for that coverage. It wasn't very good for the Masters. And Kaymer isn't helping the situation for the U.S. Open either. None of this is a big deal until it becomes an issue every year with viewership. And Tiger will most likely be back next year..

This course isn't showing me a lot as far as major trouble spots for the players... pretty pedestrian imo...US Opens usually have all kinds of trouble everywhere... Tee shots aren't getting penalized either as in past years.. Fairways are wider then normal too

US Open is fine without Tiger or any big name player. Im not a fan of the set up as I dont think the natural areas are penal enough for the golfers. It would be nice to see someone make this close, but if Kaymer continues to putt the way he is, he wont be caught

Kaymer at -140 is a good price imo... 6 shot lead, the way he has been playing lately... I'm on it

By the way Chris Berman signed off for the last time as ESPN will no longer cover the US Open after this year. I'm not sure who takes over extended coverage next year. Not too many choices there besides the Golf Channel or maybe TNT.

Golf Channel would be fine with me

the majors will always get maximum coverage.. kaymer is ruining my weekend .. tons of guys around -2 and he is lapping the field.

They did not get maximum coverage before Tiger.
What makes you think they will get maximum coverage after Tiger.

I'm really not sure why so many people think Golf will die without Tiger ! He hasn't won in 6 years so that means 0 for 24 Majors now ! Golf is a game almost everyone can play and I'm pretty sure being played by more people than any other Sport. As We get older, How many of us are going to be hitting the Basketball Court, Football field or Baseball Diamond. Of course the ratings are down and Golf Fans are waiting for the next Super Golfer to rise to the top. Nothing unusual about that as it happens in every Sport. Rest assured there will be another Golfer or perhaps a good pair or perhaps as threesome rise once again. We had the years of Palmer, Player etc and then came along jack, then Tiger ! I think these younger Golfers are awesome and are certainly part of the reason it will be very hard for Tiger to win many more if any Majors. I've been watching every Major including the last 24 and intend to keep watching with or without Tiger !

But it does beg the question of why did ESPN drop golf?

I wouldn't say they dropped golf. Fox Sports paid the USGA over 100 million per year through 2026 to carry their events. ESPN didn't think it was worth 100 million a year for the USGA events. That doesn't mean they're dropping golf.

The fact that ESPN didn't think it was worth the money should say something for the state of the game. Since when has money ever been an issue for that bloated network? If there is any reason behind it, it's probably because Tiger and Phil are getting older, and there aren't any real superstars on the horizon to boost their ratings...

This year the Open is probably a after thought with ESPN trying to get all of these World Cup games in..

Not sure I said anything about someone ever winning 14 Majors in my Life Time or perhaps even my Grandchildren's Lifetime. I have never seen anyone the likes of Gayle Sayers but it has never stopped me from watching football. There will probably be golfers as good as Tiger or perhaps as good as Jack someday. However that doesn't mean they will ever win 14 or 18 Majors ever again. As I mentioned, there are so many awesome young golfers out there today that it's hard to win consistently. The huge $$ has lured a lot of talented Athletes to take up Golf.
