The NBA and MLB, two of the nation’s biggest pro sports, have returned to TV after the COVID-19 hiatus. However, their ratings show that fans just aren’t all that interested in the new, woke version of the leagues.
Both basketball and baseball hit screens this summer filled with paeans to Black Lives Matter: Protests during the national anthem, and an avalanche of sloganeering on signs, stadium floors and fields, and on player jersey backs. Along with the intrusion of this political activism on TV during the games, the two leagues have literally blasted social media with one woke proclamation after another. For weeks ahead of the debut of the shortened 2020 seasons, NBA and MLB sports reporters brayed about how “important” the leagues’ returns were and insisted that fans were “hungry” for sports.
But both leagues have struggled to limp past a few million viewers for any particular game, and overall TV ratings have dipped below the pre-pandemic numbers.
According to SportMediaWatch, the NBA’s ratings have fallen and MLB is “weak.”
The NBA has struggled to average more than 1.5 million viewers, and baseball is in no better shape. For the NBA’s opening week, the league averaged 1.56 million viewers, down from the already lackluster pre-coronavirus average of 1.62 million. Baseball has seen a smattering of numbers that hover, in most cases, well below 1.5 million average viewers.
The numbers for the NBA are particularly worrisome given that many of the are low performing games are playoff seeding games that have taken place in primetime. These are supposed to be the biggest games to date, games that will decide playoff matchups.
Though, fans just aren’t tuning-in.The ratings for the NBA were so poor that Fox News programming — and even Rachel Maddow on MSNBC — beat NBA ratings.

Asking a white man if he has used a racial slur lately is not race baiting?

How were ratings for the PGA? Honest question, I didn't check.
assume they were terrible for the Greensboro tourney with the top guys missing the cut, no Tiger, and the week after PGA Championship. Watching Si Woo Kim vs BillyHo and Jim Herman is not must-see tv :)

The PGA put up some big numbers....5.61M in primetime on Sunday final, nearly double the next closest show. The two NBA games it was up against did 345,000 and 395,000 viewers in the same demographic. The NHL game, Cbus/Tor, did 646,000 viewers

I was busting the balls of a redneck cracker who I sometimes refer to as "crackwhore", is that really racist in your silly world? The color of the woman in the picture adds nothing to my attempt at ball-busting humor, but being that woman happens to be Maxine Waters does

I really don't care what simpletons accuse me of, because they're simpletons. You need a simple solution, you seek one out. I'm OK with that and you represent your ilk well

Was listening to a podcast discussing some Mark Cuban
comments on the subject. It was mentioned that FOX's
Tucker Carlson has over 4.5 Million or more viewers nightly.
Pro Wrestling Shows have between 700,000 to a Million viewers
on like Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays.

I think SEC Football and NFL Football will be interesting numbers
to observe this Fall.

I was reading about ratings because of that headline. Dig below the clickbait and read the numbers. NBA was #1 in the 18-49 demographic which is what advertisers care about. The news channels were #1 in 65+ with Carlson especially killing it with 70+ demographic. Nobody really cares about marketing to the elderly aside from niche markets.

Crazy how many people watch wrestling. Especially since it is scripted, there isn't really a need to watch it live.

The 18 to 49 Demo is what gets a t.v. show re-newed or cancelled and what also sets advertising purchase rates.

I agree with the advertisement, but how do they know what demographic watches it?

Advertisers want to reach demographics that spend money, preferably demographics that spend money on their product

Baby boomers still spend the most every year. Followed by their children, whatever they're called.

People > 70 start spending less

What do people age 20, give or take, spend money on? Fast food? Beer?

People aged 25 to 35 are tied down by new mortgages and new kids, I guess they're a target audience for groceries and kids' clothing and new credit cards

Exactly. That is why networks and advertisers don’t sweat headlines of sagging ratings for major sports. They know the ads reach a much wider audience than Nielsen ratings with so many cord cutters streaming games on various platforms.

I rarely watch the cable news but I’m guessing the products and services advertised on shows like Maddow and Hannity are much different than nfl
Sunday ads
