A fifth-round pick of New Orleans in 1997, Danny Wuerffel lacked the arm strength and mobility to be an elite NFL quarterback.

No player in this year's NFL draft has been under more scrutiny than former University of
Florida quarterback Tim Tebow, one of the most decorated players in college football history. A two-time national champion and the 2007 Heisman Trophy winner, Tebow's throwing motion has been examined and dissected by seemingly every armchair quarterback with a laptop.
That's not all.
There are questions about how Tebow's outspoken religious faith might play out in an NFL locker room, whether he can adjust to a pro-style offense and if he can play under center. There also are concerns about his intelligence. About the only question that hasn't been pondered by draft pundits is if Tebow prefers boxers or briefs. The draft is still a day away, so there is time.
Of course, the only question that really matters is whether Tebow can play in the NFL. We won't know the answer for a while, but Tebow is determined to prove doubters wrong and avoid joining the club of
college stars whose NFL careers fell short of expectations.
QB
Danny Wuerffel
Florida
Before Tebow came along, Wuerffel and his college coach, Steve Spurrier, ranked as the two most-decorated players in UF football history. Wuerffel led the Gators to their first national title in 1996 and became the school's first
Heisman Trophy winner since Spurrier. A fifth-round pick of New Orleans in 1997, Wuerffel lacked the arm strength and mobility to be an elite NFL quarterback. He retired after playing for four teams in six seasons.
QB Troy Smith
Ohio State
Smith won the 2006 Heisman Trophy, but the Buckeyes lost to Tebow's Florida team, 41-14, in the national title game. Smith's stock dropped afterward, and he was a fifth-round pick of the
Baltimore Ravens in 2007. In three seasons, Smith has been unable to make an impact in the NFL.
QB Jason White
Oklahoma
White won the 2003 Heisman Trophy as a junior and led the Sooners to back-to-back BCS national championship games, in 2003 and 2004. Oklahoma lost both, but White finished his career as the school's all-time leading passer. However, despite a weak talent pool in the 2005 NFL draft, White went undrafted. He later tried out for the Kansas City Chiefs, but failed to make the team and quit football.
QB Matt Leinart
Southern Cal
Leinart was 37-2 in three years as the Trojans' starting quarterback, leading them to the 2004 BCS national title and winning the Heisman Trophy. He was a first-round pick of the Arizona Cardinals in 2006, but a prolonged holdout delayed the start of his NFL career and Leinart has yet to recover. He was Kurt Warner's backup the past three seasons and, despite Warner's retirement, Leinart's chances of becoming Arizona's starter remain uncertain.
QB Eric Crouch
Nebraska
Crouch won the 2001 Heisman Trophy and finished his career as one of only three college quarterbacks to pass for 4,000 yards and rush for 3,000 yards in a career. Drafted in the third round by the St. Louis Rams as a receiver, Crouch opposed the move and never played a regular-season game in the NFL. He later played defensive back in NFL Europe and quarterback in the CFL.
Honorable mention
Other notable
college stars in recent years to fall short of expectations in the NFL include QB Andre Ware (1989 Heisman winner); QB Gino Torretta (1992 Heisman winner); RB Rashaan Salaam (1994 Heisman winner); QB Ryan Leaf (second pick in 1998 draft); and QB Chris Weinke (2000 Heisman winner).
