SHELBYVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - A barn fire killed 18 Tennessee Walking Horse colts early Thursday.

The fire destroyed Troy Yokley Stables southwest of Shelbyville in Bedford County.

"I heard a horse that sounded like it was down in the barn, got up, looked out and saw flames shooting out the front of the barn," Yokley told a local newspaper. "I went outside and the fire was coming from both ends of the barn."

Volunteer Fire Services Inc. Chief Mark Thomas said that when firefighters arrived about 3 a.m. flames had engulfed the barn. One horse ran from barn and survived.

Yokley told investigators he was a part owner of most of the horses.

Thomas said the fire apparently started in the middle of the metal building.
