It may be Lima Time in New York for a while longer
by ego74
According to insiders within the NY Mets organization, the MLB Club has no plans at the moment of trading any of their top prospects for some help to replace Victor Zambrano in the starting rotation.
Zambrano was lost for the season after tearing a flexor tendon in a game against NL East rival Atlanta over a week ago. He had to undergo Tommy John Surgery and hopes to be healthy enough to return in 2007.
Rumors have been swirling that the Mets were going to accept a trade with the Oakland A's in which they'd acquire lefty Barry Zito for one of their top minor league prospects, Lastings Milledge. The organization is wary though of dealing any of their top minor leaguers after the criticism they received for dealing Pitcher Scott Kazmir to the Tampa Bay Devil Rays two years ago for Zambrano, who has been injury riddled and a disappointment for the most part.
The injury to Zambrano has opened the door for the return of Lima Time to the major leagues, sporting a bleached blond afro to boot. Jose Lima got the start Sunday against Atlanta, taking the loss after giving up 5 earned runs, 7 hits and walking four in 5 innings pitched.
Lima and another pitcher who has bounced around the league, Jeremi Gonzalez, are penciled in for this coming weekend's series against the Brewers.
Help is on the way for New York though, as Brian Bannister (strained right hamstring) may be ready to return to the rotation within 10 days to two weeks.
If the Mets are indeed forced to look elsewhere for help in the rotation, a few cheaper alternatives are out there, namely Kansas City's Jeremy Affeldt, Wa L.A.'s Aaron Sele, San Diego's Chan Ho Park, and the Cubs Glendon Rusch.
