ed reed is a great player, he gets more attention for his int's and touchdowns and overall play is not in most calculations. playing free safety he has the ability to roam and make many of those plays. not taking anythhing away from reed but

troy polamalu and sean taylor are all around better, taylor was not as iq smart overall like reed but was better in the box and tackling and mr. polamalu can do it all, i would love to see him at fs with less run and pass assignments

Think Reed is best safety to ver play. Has a nose for ball, tackles very well, leader, has blocked punts on occasion and I believe could take punts back to the house if given a chance. any pick he can go

My all time greats (thought about this couple hours ago). Winning championships about 12th on evaluation list

QB Staubach
RB Brown*
WR Rice
OL Munoz*

DL Smith, B.
LB Taylor
CB Haynes
S Reed

* Faulk best RB when considering receiving abilities and blitz pick. Brown played in era when FB would catch balls out of bcakfield and 30 recs in a season was a boatlod for a RB until Chuck Foreman came on the seen(before him some AFC backs hit the flats: Podolack of KC, Kiick of Fish comes to mind)

* John Hannah was mighty good, too

All these palyers were complete at high levels in every category with some rediculously versatile. Ex: Bruce Smith dominated at any line position he played for ten years.

the only thing that impresses me more than his ability to intercept passes is his ability to run them back 60+ yards

Over 1000 yards in interceptions returns for his career. I didn't know they tracked that particular stat, but if he doesn't own the record I'd like to know who does.

Ed Reed a damn fine player.

the original post stated the best defensive player in VDs lifetime, yet the thread has turn to the safety position not best defensive player. what's that say?

Most people don't realize that he is playing with a neck injury all year.

He could have had surgery before the season started but they said he would never be able to play football again.

I guess he just deals with the pain.

As much as I dislike the guy, as someone else mentioned, Deon Sanders was a great cover corner. And he would get the picks and bring 'em back the other way for TDs just like Reed does. He also returned kicks and took his share of them to the house too. Couldn't tackle worth a lick but he could cover and had that magic with the ball when he got his hands on it.

Lawrence Taylor has to be in the conversation as does Reggie White. Let's not forget Eller and Paige, the stalwarts of argueably the best D line ever assembled, the Purple People Eaters.

But the guy who gets my vote as the best defensive player of all time was the guy who led the best defense I ever saw, the guy who is now the head coach of the FortyNiners, Mike Singletary. That guy was a bugeyed beast at middle linebacker and set the tone for the most smothering defense that ever took the field, the '85 Bears.
