had a tough time in the preseason going:

16-18 -2.55 units

My first play for Week 1:

Washington -3 +100 NY Jets

New York Jets were the #22 offense and #24 defense last year. The offense did improve over the 2nd half of the season due to the emergence of Pennington benid center. With Pennington injured, Testaverde will be called on to lead the offense, and that takes them down a notch. The also lose their number one receiver in Laverneus Coles, though Curtis Conway could be a decent replacement. Their special teams were raided by the Skins in the offseason, and this years squad should also be a step back.

Washington comes in a stronger team than last year. Ramsey should be much improved after being able to work through the offense all off-season. Trund Canidate should be a good fit in Spurrier's offense with his good speed. The addition of Coles adds another potent reciever to Rod Gardener. D-Line is questionable, though the Skins have one of the best LB corps and secondaries in the NFL. Skins did have turnover problems last year, but that could bode well for them here.

Washington stronger in almost all facets of the game and should romp at home, especially with the offense becoming accustomed to Spurrier's playcalling.

Add:

Carolina -3.5 Jacksonville

CAR/JAX under 35

Jacksonville was #27 offense and #27 defense over the last 8 games last season. This year we have a new head coach, and we have yet to see what adjustments he will make to this team. Offense is worse than last year, with he #1 receiver Jimmy Smith out. QB Brunell is solid, but his motivation has to be questioned knowing he will not be continuing with this team, and receiving corps weakened. RB Fred Taylor is the strong point on the offense, but will have trouble against the stong Carolina D line.

Carolina had the #2 dfense in the NFL last year, and this year's squad should be on par with last years. The defensive line should keep Fred Taylor in check. Offense will struggle, but the addition of solid RB Stephen Davis should help out immensely.

I'll take the home team here, as JAX will have real troubles scoring, and I look for Carolina to win by a TD in a very low scoring game this week.

0-1-1 this weekend

Tonight like:

Tampa Bay +3 Philly (2 units)

and

Tampa Bay +130

Absolutely love the Bucs here. Philly D is probably a step back from last year and looks like a few players will be out tonight. TB should be every bit as good on D as last year and the offense should step up considerably in the 2nd year of Gruden's system. Both runnning games are still big question marks, but Alstott should prove the key for the Bucs.

Tampa Bay has not let down in intensity since last year (look at their preseason), and Gruden has every intention of repeating. Should be a close game, but I look for the Bucs to pull it out in a squeaker. 2 units with the points is for insurance, but I totally expect the moneyline to cash
