Depending on the source, viewership for "The Casino" either slipped significantly this week or remained "fairly solid."
While Nielsen Media Research figures released Tuesday indicate 47,000 Las Vegas households watched Monday's episode for a 7.8 rating and a 12 share, which was down from 70,000 households (11.7 rating and 17 share) the week before, a Los Angeles Fox Broadcasting spokesman offered a far more positive numbers.
"Week 2 retained 88 percent of its premiere ratings in adults 18-49 and 93 percent in adults 18-34," said Scott Grogin, vice president of corporate communications.
The show, which features the Golden Nugget and the daily travails of the new owners, gained 4 percent in men 18-34, Grogin said.
"Bottom line, these numbers are fairly solid, not spectacular," he added. "TV viewership is down as a whole during the summer. But these numbers reflect a solid debut. As a network we're very pleased with what we've' seen so far."
The number of national viewers fell 14 percent from 5.8 million last week to 5 million, according to Nielsen's survey.
National households dropped from 4.2 million to 3.6 million, and ratings eroded from 3.9 to 3.3. The share slid from 6 to 5. However, "there is not a network that uses households," Grogin said.
On the plus side, after ruling prime-time locally last week, even beating out CBS ratings giant "C.S.I.," "The Casino" lost ground but was still the No. 2 most-watched show in Las Vegas, behind "C.S.I.," which pulled an 8.1 rating and a 15 share this week.
Second-week erosion is not uncommon for new shows because some viewers fall away after checking out the hype.
"This could be to Vegas what Warrant was to hair bands," said a local PR maven. "There's too much of an overload on reality (shows) and the Vegas hype of the moment. I just hope it goes away."
