we discussed lamb, but in the end, the feedback we got was lamb was not a big item with the tico's plus no way to get it at a cost where we could still sell our sandwiches at 2000 colones. Turkey was another option, but that is again a small market, so we went with the tried and true, chicken and beef.

Yes, i know the feeling. we lean more towards the german doner kebab school of thought on doners, etc. and being from canada i am also familiar with and was raised on the "halifax" version of this sandwich, which has little to do with a doner, other than a similar sounding name, but at the end of the day all it's all good drunk food.
The Gyro is the same as the doner kebab, except the doner is with beef, and the gyro with chicken, the halifax style is similar to the doner, but uses the sickly sweet garlic sauce used in eastern canada.. and before any canadians make a comment about the sickly sweet part, this is my favorite. Our shawarma is made with chicken, and has a few different / extra veggies and our house shawarma sauce, a mix of spices, hummus and tahini sauces. there is also a sweet chili sauce available on request.
well, yes the greek fries are a potato pattie, (just like french fries are deep fried and salted potato sticks ;-)) with a lemon herb seasoning, trying to get as close to greek roasted lemon potatoes as we can in a fast food - take away restaurant
the chocolate, pie, now discontinued, was a little different than a empanada, but we are always looking to improve so any input is appreciated.

P.S. Lamb is a must, fuck what the ticos want and fuck how much it costs. Gringos will pay top dollar for a good lamb gyro. I'm sick of ethnic restaurants here tico-izing their menu.
well, it's not the ground beef wrap version, but the sauce is good and as close as it gets.
also, were not a ethnic restaurant, and that augument can go on forever, i.e, turkish doner vs. greek gyro (using pork), the lebenese version , the israeli version, or any number of mediterranean, north african versions of this fine sandwich and other items we sell. this is a fast food take away shop, as i mentioned in an early reply, we lean more towards the german - euro version of the doner kebab. there are a couple lebenese places that serve lamb and do it well.
with a couple days notice, i can make up the canadian ground meat cone for a truer halifax donair. let me know. can even get some mozza to make it a true "super donair" as sold to me many a drunken night :toast:
