The main thing google looks for in ranking a webpage is the amount of links a site has pointing to it (link popularity). They reason if a lot of sites are linking to that URL then it must have to be somehwhat relevant to what people are searching for.

I have a friend at Google and a friend at Yahoo
Both sell ad space to Big companies
The search results are paid for
It is a complex procedure as you dont necessarily pay to be number 1, you pay to be in a certain % and then they use there own criteria
Ill ask him to review this thread tomorrow and see if he can summarize it better

Yea I think your buddy is pullin your leg

Google AdWords and google search are not the same. You pay for placement through AdWords, non-paid placement is done by Google Technology

Google searches more sites more quickly, delivering the most relevant results.

so you are taking their word for this, right? I wouldn't. They are making millions on the side from site placement in their searches, anyone would, unless they are some crazy saint or something, once the competition is not at work anything goes and people end up being as filty rich as say the 30th richest country of the world, see bill gates and windows, where this geeky freak is singlehadidly attepting to turn information technology on its head, by breaking every competition law in the book and getting away with it bribing elected officials around the globe.

I love google, and use it all the time.

They made a better mousetrap with their very sophisticated algorithms and grabbed a huge percentage of the search engine market.

Problem is, folks have found out how this algorithm works and are now exploiting it.

If you run a website, I'm sure you have already been contacted by companies that are marketing their "search engine secrets." That's probably what Rx did, or they accomplished the same thing with research on their own.

Type in "miserable failure" on google and the first match is a biography of Pres Bush.

There is a discussion on how this came about at http://www.snopes.com/politics/bush/google.asp

How did I find this? I typed in google bush on google.
