PITTSBURGH, Sept. 5 (UPI) -- Senior quarterback Rod Rutherford will not start Saturday when No. 12 Pittsburgh opens it season at home against Kent State.
Rutherford, who will play in the game, has been hit with a number of criminal charges after an incident early Monday morning outside a local bar. He is accused of grabbing a 19-year-old woman by the arm, pulling her out of her car, and kicking out a window.
Reports said he and the woman had a personal dispute. The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported Friday that the woman refused his advances outside the bar.
Rutherford's attorney, James A. Wymard, told the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review Wymard acknowledged to university sources that there is a summons ordering his client to appear in court on charges of simple assault, indecent assault, and criminal mischief.
"We absolutely and categorically deny it," Wymard told the paper. "We will plead innocent."
Rutherford is a candidate for the Johnny Unitas Award as the nation's top quarterback. He threw for 2,783 yards and 22 touchdowns last season.
