I'm reading Imperial Hubris by the anonymous CIA Agent that has been involved with Afghanistan and the Muslim world for over 20 years. His take is a little different.
He says that Osama bin Laden, as repulsive as he is to Americans, is a source of great pride and admiration to a large percentage of the Muslim world. Reason: He gave up trappings of wealth to live in caves and risk everything he had to defeat the Red Army in defense of Islam. He even compares their view of him to a modern day Robin Hood.
Before you righties get all worked up, this isn't his opinion of Osama, it's his take on the Muslim world view of Osama. And it's important because you have to know your enemy.
So what are Osama's goals? He wants to create a Caliphate of Islamist states in the Middle East. He sees the US as propping up corrupt Middle Eastern states like Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Qatar and others with military bases and he sees these nations as flawed in the eyes of Islam.
This is Mud's extrapolation but Saddam had a secular state in Iraq where Christianity is tolerated. While they may have shared a hatred of America, saddam was more interested in keeping power by running a secular state than he was in turning over his power to fundamental Islam. No way Saddam and Osama would ever work together.
In fact, the al -qaeda terrorist camp in Al - Ansar in northern Iraq was run in an area under Kurdish domination and where saddam's army did not patrol.
So what is my point? That I think I'm realistic in saying that:
- No ties between al qaeda and Saddam
- but although it's politically incorrect to say, a larger portion of the Muslim world supports the actions of Osama then we are led to believe
