Dodgeball is not child's play but ‘legalized bullying,’ Canadian researchers claim

The game of dodgeball is more than just a popular playground activity, it is a tool of bullying and oppression targeting students, a trio of Canadian researchers claim.

The researchers argue that there is a “hidden curriculum” of dodgeball that reinforces the oppression of those “perceived as weaker individuals through the exercise of violence and dominance.” They claim dodgeball – which pits two teams to eliminate each other by hitting the opposition with rubber balls – doesn’t actually help students.

“If you practice ganging up on people, over time you’ll esteem ganging up on people,” David Burns, a co-presenter of the study and a professor at the Kwantlen Polytechnic, told CTV News Vancouver. “If that’s what you want, then dodgeball is an excellent tool to that end.”

Burns – alongside fellow researchers David Burns, professor at the University of British Colombia, and Claire Robson, professor at Simon Fraser University – argues that dodgeball instead teaches students to dehumanize one another and create unsafe conditions in schools.

“Dodgeball is the only game where the human is the target,” Butler said. “No other games focus on it.”

He added: “It’s tantamount to legalized bullying.”

The researchers acknowledged their report will be criticized by many who argue the game is fun, but they are adamant that things could be done differently.

“We’re not anti-competition or anti-challenge,” Robson said. “These things need to be done in an educational context.”

Their study was presented at an education conference organized by the Canadian Society for the Study of Education in Vancouver on Monday.

This kind of thinking is why I think the USA could surrender in a war due to the unfair advantages the country has had in winning past wars.

Afterall it is just not fair. Everyone deserves to chance to win wars.

So sad. Dodgeball was great. Absolutely nothing wrong with it.

If you are against dodgeball, that’s a “you” problem. Don’t try to pass off your own weaknes to others and blame them.

This entire bullying crap is horse shit.

nothing wrong with it. If my kid was being bullied, I would tell him when he gets a clean shot in the hallway. Take it. Go out of your way to whip his ass in front of everyone. Bully’s generally don’t get into fights. If you show balls, that goes along way. Kids are kids. Some of my best friends, we have gotten into it before.

We actually never played dodge ball in school. In summer camp, we would play "bombardament" (same concept) but never dodge ball in school.

I dont see the game as bullying at all. Its a sport.

Welcome to the rules of nature, Canadian researchers!

I bet they sit around and tell themselves how much they believe in evolution and how dumb those yokels who believe in God are when they're not coming up with hot takes like this.

Researchers were obviously dorks and geeks that never won anything and probably were virgins until late in their 30's

it was my favorite game in elementary school. i would always aim for the heads of the opponents. it was amusing to watch the less athletic kids get bombarded. no one thought of it as bullying. that was usually done after school and if you just stood up to one they backed off.

Dodgeball and football are 2 things as a kid that are like a rite of passage of some sort. Can prove some toughness without actually getting into a fight with someone.

Oh, and its a blast. As a kid, dodgeball was absolutely awesome. Hell I would play now as an adult.

This concussion nonsense has gone too far too.

If you can dodge traffic, you can dodge a ball

"Doctor Bombardment" was the cruelest. In that game two groups stood across a horizontal black line facing and throwing at each other. The object was to prevent your side's Doctor from being struck by a ball. However, if any other player got hit he had to remain frozen in position until the Doctor tapped him, bringing him back into the game. When one team's Doctor was hit the game ended. That was the object of the game. However for most us of the object of the game became to whale the shit out of players who were frozen on the other side just across the black line. No team benefited from doing so but that's what made the game more fun for some and less fun for others. If your Doctor wasn't a friend outside gym class you could get into big trouble. EVERYONE ended up with a few arm or leg welts, with the occasional bloody nose or broken glasses. That's because we didn't play with dodgeballs. We used smaller ones, a bit larger than a baseball. I think the teacher was a sadist lol. And we had some 'radar gun' type dudes who could really sling it in our class.

So parents out there, out of curiosity, what games and sports are played in school these days?

I am guessing the famous game of " smear the queer" has been outlawed. Hahaha
