Advantages and disadvantages of sports gambling legislation
Sports betting, the argument goes, would kick-start flagging casino revenues, save jobs, and generate tourism revenue. Moreover, it would eliminate the pretense that gambling on sports is some shady and illicit enterprise, and not an entirely mainstream American undertaking.
The average consumer would benefit from choice in bookkeepers, each of them guaranteed to be on the up-and-up by government regulation, all safer, fairer, and friendlier than the neighborhood bookie.

I am in favor of legalizing sports gambling. We shouldn't be told we can't gamble for entertainment and try to make that elusive long-term profit. It will be interesting to see where it goes from here. Will it help local casinos, horse tracks, dog tracks, etc.? There should be more competition but if the books have to pay taxes on their profits will the competition keep the odds at -105 or -110? I agree this and the lottery are basically voluntary taxes. I do think that anyone caught trying to influence the outcome of a game should be punished harshly. This can't be allowed to get kids in trouble or change the integrity of sports.

+1 And if you are a responsible gambler, it's cheaper than going to a movie. Id say its more of entertainment than a new tax. It's entertaining to watch a game you have something on, even if you bet small like me.

It is a good thing because it promotes the idea of people being free.
Individual freedom is as important as anything in the human condition. It is bad because it ultimately increases the size and power of government which is the antithesis to individual freedom.

Many pros and cons....

Worried about high school kids betting sports...

They already bet now with the campus bookie. They still wont be able to walk into a sportsbook and place a wager if they are under 21 so I dont think its going to matter much. The truth is, all this ruling did was give the states the right to open a sportsbook. All states have some sort of gambling on sports law now so all of those laws will have to be repealed (voted on) and just because the states now can legally open sportsbooks, doesnt mean they will.

When I was in highschool, we had football parlay tickets at the lunch table going thru who we were gonna bet. Several of the football players at their table had football tickets & would gamble on the NFL & college football.
