Do you consider drug addiction a disease?

Hope I'm not coming off as not empathetic, I'm just skeptical about it. I've done my fair share of drugs and alcohol too, so not a square either.

I like you Chazz... to me you are in between, not being judgmental about it but I really don't know how close have you been to addiction to have a solid opinion. I respect your opinion regardless... have you pawned your $1600 Gibson Les Paul to buy some blow? Some people do drugs, lots of without ever being addicted, I know a bunch of my friends do drugs and have not become addicted... tons of friends who do blow but just don't purchase it themselves, they will just do a line when someone is doing one at a party and that-s that.

You know the thread has gone to shit when this piece of shit starts posting on it.
Couldn't agree more with this. Don't you find it strange that the first place Ace takes his drug addict friend(who according to Ace has no disease) is to a hospital, a place that treats people with diseases? Why would he not take him directly to a NA meeting instead.

+1

Also, seems corporations consider it a disease because they are sending employees to rehab instead of firing them immediately... some companies even pay for those rehabs...

I've gone through with drawls on some pretty hard stuff, but I've never stolen or sold any of my shit. I wouldn't consider myself an addict though, I can quit shit when I want to fairly easy, and even easier now than I could when I was younger.

Then you are disease free bro, you are just like some of my pals... I envy them... they do it socially and with impunity. I have never stolen but I have sold some of my shit... I also hustled and moved some drugs to get some drugs and $... I smuggled some drugs from Panama once... most unnerving 30mins of my life.

I recommend you to watch "One of a Kind" on youtube... a biopic of Stu Ungar, arguably the greatest poker and gin player in history. He made millions playing poker and gin in the 80's and 90's, his nose collapsed due to cocaine abuse, literally crumbled, he had surgery, and started using too soon and collapsed again. Would you say he is stupid? He was a wise guy amongst wise guys.

Some here say that addiction is having a weak mind, weak minds don't succeed at poker or gambling in general, believe me.

I'd definitely say he had a weak mind. He had one valuable skill (playing cards) but pissed away his money on sports and horse betting and on blow. Seeing your nose crumble before your eyes and still can't quit? Ridiculous.

That will never happen to me.

HarryCaray.....thanks for sharing. There really is no reason to listen to or argue with people that don't call it a disease. They are just judgmental pricks, plain and simple.....they only look at life through their own lens and are incapable of even attempting to understand others' realities. I guess it makes them feel better about themselves.

The good thing is that their opinions don't mean shit. I have my own issues, alcoholism is not one of them, but we all have our battles. I started doing much better when I stopped giving a shit about what anyone else thinks. Just like a blind man cannot see, there is no real capability of a "normal" person to understand something they have not gone through. However, there are some people in this world with hearts of gold.....typically they are wounded and have been through a lot of difficulty, softening their hearts with compassion for others. Find those people, they are your true friends.

If guys don't think it's a disease, why do you think they're judgmental pricks? Maybe they just have a different opinion than yourself. Their opinions don't mean shit? The same could be said about yours as well.

You know how it must feel your nose crumbling? Looking yourself in the mirror? How can anyone do that for a little "pleasure"? He even says he didnt enjoy blow in the end no more he just did it to stay awake for the grinding!

Repeating an action that provokes you huge pain and suffering without any pleasure as a reward is definitely a sickening habit, something that must be disease-like. Have you ever had to go to take a shit just thinking about doing a drug? That's a direct physical effect derived from uncontrollable anxiety. I studied psychology, addiction is a disease.

Because the whole point is to place blame on an individual, thus judging them. That's the only motivation for taking a stance like that. I can say without a doubt it's a disease. I have a brother that is an alcoholic, and my other brother and I couldn't choose to be an alcoholic if we wanted to. Yes, it's a burden he has the responsibility of dealing with, but he didn't choose it.

A) Not what the thread is about at all. Sorry you see it that way.

B) Yes he did choose it IMO. That's just the way I see it.

I'm sorry to see when people disagree with you, you feel they're just ignorant assholes.

There are things I struggle with that others don't. There are things others struggle with that I do not. Nobody is God, nobody knows everything. But the most wise are the people that realize that the more the know, the more they realize that they know little.

You can have your opinion, but I don't and won't respect it. But like I said, there is no real point in arguing with people when I don't care what they think anyway.
