I see a more than the usual scattering of the so-called Sharp and Square plays this Week. When are people going to learn that a wide variety of players for a wide variety of reasons, are on both sides of a game. Thats why there are Bookmakers, and anybody posting their view on whether a side is sharp or square is showing their betting ignorance.

Great point, winbet. Many posters love to claim that their opinion is that of a "sharp" and anyone who disagrees is a "square." Sometimes sharps have solid data and reasoning but still lose, sometimes squares go with their guts or some other ridiculous indicator but win. I guess we don't know who is a sharp and who is a square until the games are over and the bills are paid!

I actually know a guy who only bets unders or dogs.....the more I listen to him the bigger the impression I get that he just doesn't want to be lumped in some class of bettors that are considered square....for him it's some sort of status symbol....

As if squares never bet the right side of a game, and sharps never bet the wrong side? And no one has losing streaks?

I threw out the "sharp and square" years ago......if I ever coattailed anyones bets it was because he was either making money for me by doing so or because I thought he was on the side of the game that was going to get paid.

For me its pretty much economics......finding a side or angle or prop on the game that looks like a winner, if there appears to be none, then pass......try to put more "W's" in the left column than "L's" in the right column....

I have said it before...I will say it forever, the only "SQUARE" capper is the guy who pays for his picks.

Marco.

You mentioned that you knew someone that "only" plays dogs. Well i know a Few of those myself, one group super + to the prop for years.

Amen to this thread.....that's cracked me up for years...."sharps." Sure, there are stupid plays (eg, big parlays) and casual bettors will jump on popular or "hot" teams, but in general, it's such a stupid designation. "What? I lost that pick? But....but....I'm a SHARP!!"

There will be 15-20 references to this in the various threads in the NFL forum this weekend. There already is a Thread to give you sharpest play in the Offshore forum.

I just want to know if my Colts +13 in the last leg of a teaser is sharp or not?

Winbet:

Amen! I have said many times both in the Offshore Forum and the Sports Forums that the constant dialogue regarding "Sharps and Squares" brings out some of the most naive statements on these boards. Not surprised to see that you and I would once again agree. One of my all time favorite threads goes something like this: "Define the difference between Sharps and Squares". The depth of the responses shows how amazingly uninformed the majority remains. Best of luck this weekend as it will be an interesting challenge.

I must admit, I thought I would take some flak posting this, but it shows people are not interested in all this Sharp & Square, good bet, bad bet nonsense. We all make our plays, as in Marriage, for better or worse and the most important thing is we learn from each other.

Mr Good Dr.....nothing wrong with playing just dogs.....if you like to limit yourself on the available choices out there....

I just had the impression that he was unjustly biased to keep from being mistaken as a member in "Club Square".......same as if a heterosexual guy refrains from being friends with a gay man for fear that he too will be labeled gay.
