Difference btw Wireless G and N?

Had a laptop with a Linksys Wireless G Notebook Adapter 2.4 GHz 802.11g (I don't know what the 2.4 GHz 802.11g stands for, just letting you know what it said on the card). Some of the pins inside the Notebook Adaper card slot are screwed up, so I am just going to buy a desktop adapter piece that fits into the USB port.

My question is: Should I upgrade to the wireless-N that Linksys has now, or just guy another (cheaper) wireless-G adapter? It appears the only difference is that the Wireless-N picks up better signals, but my internet seems to be running at about the same speed. Also the router I am using is a wireless-G router, so is my computer going to be limited to the speed my router pushes out data?

Yes, it is. It seems you have no use for a Wireless-N card.

What about for the future, like if I'm at a apartment complex and am trying to steal someone else's internet...will the wireless N pick up a much better signal from neighboors, but just recieve data at the same speed? When I plugged the wireless N (bought from the store, planning on returning in 14 days and purchasing either a G or N off ebay) I was seeing wireless networks I had never seen before, I'm guessing from my neighboors.

Also, my laptop is 4 years old, guessing i'm gonna need a new one in the year or two. If I buy a new computer, the wireless card will probably already be in the computer and I won't need a an adapter?

Better, yes, much better, maybe. The speed is going to be as supported by the router.

True, the new ones come with wireless built-in.
