Bristol City in League One
- with the busy schedule in England this month I always look for a team to oppose, or back, and liking Bristol City's for this year's selection
They were relegated from the Championship last year so have a lot more talent than most League One squads and, in fact, only Wolves have a player value in excess of Bristol City. Last week Steve Cotterill took over managing the club and he's an incredible boss for League One. We're talking about a guy that has serious pedigree. He's won an FA trophy, got promoted from both the conference and league two and has bossed much bigger clubs like Pompey, Forest, Burnley, and Stoke.
Many times when teams get relegated they start the season with relegation hangover before they pick it up in mid-year and that's exactly what I'm expecting with Bristol City. They started the year 12 without a win but had been getting better. Two weeks ago they drew L1 leaders, Leyton Orient, 2-2 but were on the front foot all match and ended with a 19-7 shots advantage. They get Orient again on New Year's Day but have 4 league matches before then and I think snagging them in all four will net you some nice money. None of the teams are considered title favorites (Rotherham, Notts, Walsall, and Stevenage) and 3 of the 4 are at home.
City did beat Tamworth today in an FA Cup match which is a good start to the Cotterill regime and now they get a full week of practice to get ready for Rotherham who play a League Trophy quarterfinal this Tuesday. From there they get a week off before visiting bottom club, Notts, then b2b home games before the year is out.
Unlike most bottom clubs their -6 goal differential shows they're in most matches and that's backed by the fact that only ONE team all year has beaten them by multiple goals. Very rare to see a team in 23rd (out of 24) with that type of goal differential and it shows they're not far away from getting wins. They lead League One with 9 draws in 19 games so I'm expecting some extra goals here and there to start getting 3 points, not 1.
According to their previous boss City were best in games against teams that were more open and not just sitting back and defending and only 1 of these next 4 teams are in the top 8 in L1 defense, Walsall, and even they have allowed goals now in 3 straight games
