Mexico kept up their recent revival in 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa™ qualifying with a 3-0 drubbing of Costa Rica on the road in San Jose, the effervescent Gio dos Santos leading the way. Wins for the USA and Honduras - over El Salvador and Trinidad and Tobago respectively - sees the pair tangled for top spot on 13 points while Mexico cling to the last automatic qualifying berth in third with 12. The Ticos, first place coming into Saturday night's schedule, are now in fourth with three games to go and confidence low.
Match of the day
Costa Rica 0-3 Mexico
Goals: Giovani dos Santos 46', Guille Franco 62', Andres Guardado 70'
Mexico came into their clash with table toppers Costa Rica on a high after beating the States at their Estadio Azteca last month. Even so, their shaky start to the final round of qualifying and the Ticos fine home form up to that point, made for a nervy and physical first half. However, with seconds to go in the opening period, Gio dos Santos snapped to life, scoring a stunner from distance. He then went on to set up Guille Franco and Andres Guardado, who added goals in the second half to hand Costa Rica their first home loss of the campaign. The rout also sees the Mexicans move on up to third, in the frame for one of the three automatic berths to South Africa for the first time in the campaign. El Tri, thanks in large part to Dos Santos, have turned an important corner after dropping three of their first four games in the final round.

Criminality enters the sacred world of Costa Rican fútbol
By the A.M. Costa Rica staff

In a country where criminals seem to take advantage of lax laws, there is one overriding truth: Don't mess with soccer tickets.

Soccer fans and others are enraged because fake tickets for the Costa Rica-México game Saturday have been in the marketplace. The reaction has been swift. The Federación Costarricense de Fútbol went so far as to have fans turn in the tickets they purchased in exchange for new ones.

In that process officials uncovered nearly 500 twinned tickets, that is tickets with the same number as an authorized ticket.

The soccer federation obtains its tickets from a firm named
Special Ticket, and the Judicial Investigating Organization is looking into irregularities there. Those who purchased the fake tickets did so through the authorized sales process.

Most were for 5,000 colons, about $17.

The game is Saturday, and for Costa Rica the event is a big deal because it bears directly on the national team's standing to participate in the 2010 World Cup contest in South Africa.

The situation raises the possibility that tickets were cloned for other games but that the fact did not rise to official notice.

The fake tickets appear to have been manufactured at the same time as the authorized tickets. The amount involved may be as much as 20 million colons or about $34,000.

Man appeals to high court
over his soccer ticket

By the A.M. Costa Rica staff

The Sala IV constitutional court appeal was bound to happen. It did Wednesday morning. A man identified by the last names of Calvo Jiménez presented a request for help, called an amparo, claiming that workers at the Estadio Ricardo Saprissa kept his ticket for Saturday's soccer game illegally.

This is a case involved with the cloning of tickets by a worker in the company that produces and distributes the tickets. As a result of the fraud, those who had purchased tickets had to turn them in and receive tickets from another series. Some duplicated tickets were confiscated. perhaps as many as 500.

The game is between the Costa Rican and Mexican national teams. Players on both teams hope to be able to travel to South Africa next year for the World Cup contests.

The Poder Judicial confirmed that the legal document had been presented but said that court magistrates have the option to consider the case or not. The court considers many cases that would appear to be solved easily at a lower level. Now magistrates must decide if the distribution of soccer tickets is in their domain.
