Currently having a problem with computer freezing up so I press control, alt, delete one time and "Winoldap (not responding)" is highlighted. I click on end task but 5 minutes later the computer will freeze up again. No idea what Winoldap is but obviously cannot be good if it's not responding. I believe a suspicious email that I did not open caused the problem....the email opened by itself when highlighted. I never double clicked on this email. It's one of those many emails going around now that says "how much more postage do I owe to Alaska for your item on ebay". Then it automatically opens up another window.
Also noticed when I hit control, alt, del a program that is "<unknown>". I attempted to hit the end task button for that program but it screwed up my computer and I had to re-boot. At any rate I have a compaq presario with WIN 98 and could use some help.....tired of re-booting. Thanks.

it appears (Based on google.com info on winoldapp) that this is an error generated by a module of win98 that helps running VERY old applications

have you installed any program recently?

also if you can bring up the list of processes running (I believe it was called dr watson in old versions of windows.......try ctrl-alt-del just in case) and you can put in here the list of stuff it might help determine whats causing it

a bunch of the processes are normal but you might have one that shouldn't be there (perhaps caused by this suspicious email you mention)

For future reference to anyone experiencing the same problem:

You can hit control, alt, delete.....
then delete all files except for explorer and systray which will still allow you to access the internet without the computer freezing up every 5 mintutes and then re-booting system over and over again. I also deleted all cookies and temp. internet files. I hate to download very many programs on my computer, but it looks like I have no choice but to download some of that adaware crap and see if that will eliminate the problem. My ass is sore from sitting for nearly 5 hrs. now trying to figure out this problem. I don't envy any computer programmers, analysts, or techies out there.

Well I've been up half the night and still no luck fixing the problem by downloading adaware and updating Mcafee. Trying Dr. Watson next before hitting the sack with red eyes and double vision....I never even had a drink. Missed the Red Sox/Yankee game though.

Dr. Watson stated a file named <unknown> has altered Windows system files. Don't know where to go from here except to bed. This is worse than actually working for a living.

Sounds as if you may be in for a reformat.. This is not a hard chore but somewhat time consuming. If you know what your doing it can be done in about 1 1/2 hours + installing your hardware devices and any other extras you had on it. Mind you a format is not a bad thing, you get to clean out your PC and put back just what you want..

Do you have a CDRW? Save what you want and scrap the rest.. I can show you how and also how to save your favorite links to a file to be saved.

If you want you could call me and I could walk you through it..

I'm afraid your right cheater. I reformatted before about 2 yrs. ago so I shouldn't have a problem. I'll probably wait until I have more time on my hands because last time I think it took me 3 or 4 hrs to completely set up everything including printer, scanner, and Norton Anti-Virus. I appreciate the offer though as you rarely find someone willing to take that much time to assist someone else these days. If I had not reformatted before then I would have been more than happy to send you money from Paypal or Netteller just because it's not often you run into someone like yourself. Your a true credit to the human race. I'll definately keep you in mind for future reference. Thank You.

A last ditch effort resolved the problem. Downloading AVG antivirus found a trojan virus that went undetected by my Mcafee antivirus. Now I don't need to reformat my whole system....
plop plop fizz fizz oh what a relief it is!!! Everything working as normal.

I'm glad you solved your problem...

Here's a tip to prevent your email from opening when highlighted. I assume you have Outlook Express? If you do,

Open Outlook Express
Click on View
Click on layout
Uncheck Show Preview Pane
Hit apply.

By doing this, your email will not open when highlighted. You must highlight and double click on the ones you want to open or read.

Just to let you know, AVG will report a lot of false positives when detecting viruses / trojan horses.

I suggest you try using Panda Anti-Virus or Zone Alarm Security Suite (e-Trust Anti-Virus is included in the suite).

Both can be bought at your local retail store or found on the internet, if you look in the right places.
