Im trying to install a critical update for Windows XP

its called Windows XP service Pack 1

When I do and it starts on the install and selecting components I get an error message

The file c:/windows/system32/ftp.exe is open or in use by another application. Close all other applications and click retry

Problem is every application is closed. and I dont see ftp.exe running when I look on my windows task Manager.

Any advise? Do you suggest I get this update?

is my ftp.exe file always on and communicating ac**** the internet (I have cable internet)

what are these ftp.exe files doing and what programs might be using them.

is this a sign of a virus problem?

info on the patch im trying to do:
Windows XP Service Pack 1 (SP1) provides the latest security, reliability, and performance updates to the Windows XP family of operating systems. Windows XP SP1 is designed to ensure Windows XP platform compatibility with newly released software and hardware, and includes updates to resolve issues discovered by customers or by Microsoft's internal testing team. The maximum download size is approximately 30 MB, however the size of the download and time required may be less for computers that have had updates previously installed. To minimize the download time needed for installation, setup will only download those files which are required to bring your computer up to date. Windows XP SP1 includes Internet Explorer 6 SP1. Anti-virus software programs may interfere with the installation of Windows XP SP1. Please disable anti-virus software while installing the service pack. Microsoft recommends installing SP1 because it includes many of updates to help keep your computer secure. Once you have installed the service pack you should check back for additional updates.

Typical download times for the ......

It sounds like a virus to me. You should get mcafee, clean your machine, and then get SP1.
You definately need to get SP1. Worst case just reformat and then get all the updates.

Trytrytry,

I don't have XP, or have much experience trouble shooting it...

I believe the FTP stands for File Transfer Protocal. It sounds like this file is tring to communicate like u stated in your post.. I'm not sure exactly what your resolution should be but you can try the following..

Try unplugging your cable modem from your computer to insure your disconnected from the internet and try to install the update again.

Goto the Windows update site and see if your up to date on the other Critical updates and if not, D/L those before you do the service pack update..

also you should look at the Microsoft site trouble shooting area and se if you can find your problem there...

Hope that helps

make sure your current anti virus software is turned off/disabled. Before SP1 is installed. If after that you are still having trouble call microsoft 800 936 5800 tell the operator and they'll send you in the right direction

Make sure nothing, is running I mean nothing. 95% of all computer problems, are as a result of people running too much crap, I.E. tasks at the same time, they compete for memory resources and cause far too many problems. You can run msconfig and remove the checks from everything, or press ALT CTRL and DEL at the same time and end task on all the processes. Personally I would run as little as possible; you will notice a dramatic improvement. Ok now pay me $100.00 for my support and troubleshooting
