Service plans are a complete SCAM!

Think about it, your paying over 30% of the cost of the laptop for somthing that "could" go wrong.. If you buy a good brand (for a novice computer buyer) like Dell or Gateway you'll be fine without the BS service plan...

The BEST way to go would be to do your homework, research your ass off on the net and at local stores, look at consumer reports, etc, then purchase your laptop with a clear conscience!

I know it was gateway, on sale for 1099 from 1249.. dvd/cd writeable drives, and my lack on computer knowledge prevents me from listing much else I want to say 1.8 ghz
and a built in device that lets me connect to the internet wirelessly for when im out of town in a hotel and if I ever go wireless in my home

I see the one you are talking about on their web site. Looks like a good laptop. Actually, it is an eMachines with a Gateway logo (Gateway bought eMachines recently). At that price, I probably would skip the service plan. If it was a $2000 - $3000 model, I might consider it, since it might actually NOT be obsolete in 3 years. At $1000, a major failure after the 1 year warranty would just be a good excuse to buy another one!
