Cardinals C Molina out 5-7 days

St. Louis Cardinals catcher Yadier Molina will be shut down for at least five to seven days after it was revealed that he had a slight ligament tear in his left thumb, Cardinals general manager John Mozeliak said Monday.

Molina, who was named to the All-Star team for the seventh straight year this season, injured his thumb on Sunday against the Chicago Cubs in a play at the plate.

Mozeliak said he believes Molina will return this season, and the Cardinals hope he will be back for the playoffs. The Cardinals entered Monday's action leading the National League Central by four games, and if they win the division, they would play their first postseason game Oct. 9.

Molina's offensive numbers have been down a bit this season. He is hitting .270 with four homers in 136 games. Molina is also a seven-time Gold Glove winner.

While Molina is sidelined, the Cardinals will use Tony Cruz as their primary catcher. Cruz is hitting .173 this season.

Favorites were the side to bet on the diamond Monday

Teams that were supposed to win, did Monday night. At least for the most part in Major League Baseball action Monday night, going 7-2 straight up.

Favorites were able to cash at a rate of 77.78 percent last night. They are now cashing at a rate of 57.54 percent for the season.

Yankees face must-win games in Blue Jays series

The Yankees know the importance of their next two games.

After losing the opener of a three-game series against the Toronto Blue Jays 4-2 on Monday, they know the final two games of the series at Rogers Centre are vital.

"You've got to keep it close," Yankees manager Joe Girardi said.

The Yankees dropped to 3 1/2 games behind the first-place Blue Jays and have 13 games to play.

"I think we're three back in the loss column now," Girardi said. "You're hoping that you could win (Monday) and get it down to one and we didn't. These are really important games.

"I think they're as important as any games we've played all year when you talk about trying to win the division."

The Yankees still are likely to win an AL wild-card spot but that would mean playing a one-game playoff with the other wild-card team to determine which teams would advance to the ALDS.

Braves once again fail to support hard-luck righty Miller

Shelby Miller didn't break out into "The Facts of Life" theme song when discussing his 23rd straight winless start Monday night. But it would be hard to blame him if he did.

The Atlanta Braves' hard-luck right-hander continued to make the wrong kind of history Monday, when he took the loss after allowing two runs on seven hits and four walks while striking out three over six innings as the Braves fell to the New York Mets, 4-0, at Citi Field.

In his last 23 starts, Miller is 0-15 despite a 3.65 ERA. The winless streak, as well as the streak of losing decisions, are both the longest for a Braves pitcher since the franchise moved to Atlanta in 1966.

Reds' Hamilton will have shoulder surgery

Billy Hamilton's season ended two weeks early Monday night when the Cincinnati Reds announced that he would undergo surgery Friday to repair a sprained capsule in his right shoulder.

The news came before the Reds' 2-1 loss to the St. Louis Cardinals.

The center fielder excited fans last year as a rookie, finishing second in the National League with 56 steals and doing just enough with the bat -- .250, six homers and 48 RBIs, displaying surprising pop at times -- to inspire thoughts that he could be a Rickey Henderson-style game-shaper atop the order.

This year was a step backwards offensively for the lithe speedster. While Hamilton leads the majors with 57 steals in just 65 attempts, he hasn't reached first base enough to make his speed a true weapon, hitting a weak .226 and walking only 28 times in 412 at-bats. His on-base percentage is a woeful .274.

Three series headed to decisive Game 3

September 21, 2015

NEW YORK (AP) With New York, Indiana and Los Angeles on the brink of elimination, their stars all stepped up to help force decisive third games.

Now the WNBA will have three Game 3s in the opening round of the playoffs for the first time since 2011. Since the league expanded to eight teams in the postseason in 2000, one of the No. 1 seeds has always advanced past the opening round which bodes well for New York and Minnesota. Both top seeds will host elimination games Tuesday night.

Indiana will visit Chicago on Monday night. Tamika Catchings set the tone in Indiana's seven-point victory over Chicago on Saturday night that forced the third game.

''The first game we were so tense, like we wanted win the game so bad and everybody individually wanted to win it and down the stretch we just kind of fell apart a little bit,'' said Catchings, who had 22 points and nine rebounds. ''But I thought tonight we just had fun. It looked like everybody was just loose and looked like everybody was just focused, we were energized. We knew what this game meant, but at the same time it was like let's have fun tonight.''

Indiana has done a great job shutting down league MVP Elena Delle Donne in the first two games as she's averaged just 12.5 points. The Sky will need their star to step up Monday if they hope to advance.

Los Angeles coach Brian Agler watched the Fever's victory and noted to his team how well Catchings played.

''The thing that jumped out to me about that game was that Tamika wasn't going to let them lose,'' Agler said after his team beat Minnesota on Sunday. ''There are players out there who feel like they are worthy. And worthy doesn't mean it's going to be given to you. But you think you deserve it, so you want to go out and prove it.''

Candace Parker did just that for the Sparks, taking over Game 2 against the Lynx. She finished with 25 points, 10 rebounds and six assists to lead the Sparks to the win - their first in the playoffs in two years. The Sparks almost stole the first game against the Lynx and are confident heading back to Minnesota, where the Lynx are 17-2 all-time at home in the playoffs.

''Minnesota did what they were supposed to do,'' Parker said. ''Now we have to do what we are supposed to do. We tweaked some things but did not change everything. I know I saw on the film that I wasn't aggressive on the defensive end. I think that you have to control the things you have to control and that's what he stressed going into the game.''

Los Angeles might have to play the decisive game without Nneka Ogwumike, who left in the third quarter with a neck strain and did not return after she was struck in a tangle of players in the paint.

''She wasn't feeling very good, obviously,'' Agler said. ''I don't know what the status will be on Tuesday with her.''

Like Parker, Tina Charles raised her play on Sunday to help New York force a third game. The Liberty lost the opener in double overtime to Washington. New York wouldn't let Game 2 come down to the end, taking an early lead and never relinquishing it.

Charles had 17 of her 22 points in the third quarter, hitting shots from everywhere on the court, including a 3-pointer.

''I just wasn't satisfied the way I played the first half,'' said Charles, who only had five points in the first half. ''I thought I could have played smarter. Once I saw a couple of shots go in, I just got confidence and kept attacking. ... So I just kept attacking, I was in a zone and I played like it was my last. That's all I kept saying, `We want to see Tuesday.'''

Unlike Indiana and Los Angeles, the top-seeded Liberty will have home-court advantage in the third game. Over 10,000 fans turned out for New York's playoff opener on Friday night.

If New York does win Tuesday night, they'll have a quick turnaround as the Eastern Conference finals would begin Wednesday at Madison Square Garden.

While those three series are all headed to a decisive game, Phoenix is resting after ending its series with Tulsa in two games.

Mystics-Liberty Preview

Coach Bill Laimbeer's confidence going into a potential elimination game on the road appeared to rub off on the New York Liberty. That's resulted in them bringing their Eastern Conference semifinal series back home and looking to move on to the next round.

The Liberty look to duplicate a very impressive Game 2 effort when they face the Washington Mystics in the decisive contest Tuesday night.

Tina Charles scored 17 of her 22 points in the third quarter and New York dominated throughout Sunday, winning 86-68 to rebound from a double-overtime home loss in the opener.

" ... I just kept attacking, I was in a zone and I played like it was my last (game)," Charles said. "That's all I kept saying, 'We want to see Tuesday.'''

Laimbeer had expressed a sense of assuredness prior to the game that it would happen, reminding his club that it had the best road record in the league.

That was apparent Sunday, as the Liberty held a 33-24 advantage on the boards, shot 47.9 percent while holding Washington to 38.6 and recorded 12 steals.

''I thought we played focused,'' said Laimbeer, named WNBA Coach of the Year last week. ''We played focused (in Game 2), unfortunately things just didn't go our way. Tonight, we played a good, solid mental game.''

New York had four players score in double figures Sunday and the bench turned in an outstanding performance. Sugar Rodgers had 15 of the reserves' 32 points.

Now it's Washington that needs to regroup after failing to protect home court as it looks to make it out of the conference semifinals for the first time since 2002.

"Everybody has to stay confident," leading scorer Ivory Latta said. "You gotta be confident in yourself and your shot. We're definitely gonna be fine but we just gotta move the ball and definitely take of the ball on the offensive end.

" ... Everyone has to stay focused; we gotta lift each other up. It's not the end of the road for us. We still got another chance of moving on and we're gonna just continue to get better."

Washington committed 14 turnovers to New York's six and went 12 of 18 from the free-throw line to 13 of 15 for the Liberty.

''You win playoff games with rebounding, turnovers and free throws and we lost two of those (categories) very badly,'' coach Mike Thibault said.

New York might require a better defensive effort against Tayler Hill in order to close out the series. She led the Mystics with 19 points - six on 3-pointers - with five coming in the first half.

Latta turned in her second straight 15-point performance, going 3 of 6 from beyond the arc after hitting four of six 3s in Game 1.

If the Liberty advance for the first time since 2010, they'll have a quick turnaround as the East finals would begin Wednesday at Madison Square Garden.

Sparks-Lynx Preview

The Los Angeles Sparks have been dealing with adversity throughout the season.

Heading into their biggest game of the year, they've been dealt another major blow.

The Sparks are unsure of the status of three-time All-Star Nneka Ogwumike for Tuesday night's decisive Game 3 of their Western Conference semifinal series against the top-seeded Minnesota Lynx.

Ogwumike left in the third quarter of Sunday's 81-71 win with a neck strain after she was struck in a tangle of players in the paint.

''She wasn't feeling very good, obviously,'' coach Brian Agler said. ''I don't know what the status will be on Tuesday with her.''

If Ogwumike, second on the team with 16.5 points and 7.3 rebounds, can't play, it would just be the latest obstacle for the Sparks, who did not have Candace Parker and other key players to start this season and began 2-12.

Facing elimination Sunday, Parker carried Los Angeles to its first playoff win in two years, finishing with 25 points, 10 rebounds and six assists. Rookie Ana Dabovic had a career-high 19 points for the Sparks, who led by 22 in the second quarter.

''You never want to be in a situation where you're down by that much on the road against a team that's fighting for a championship like we are,'' Minnesota's Maya Moore said. ''We didn't hang our head. We didn't give up. We tried to still make plays. But with that big of a hole, it's hard. It hard mentally. It's hard emotionally to not get frustrated.''

The Sparks have had plenty to potentially get frustrated about this season - they were forced to move Game 2 to Long Beach State because the Emmy Awards were being held Sunday night near Staples Center - but have not been deterred.

''I think that that's what so great about our team,'' Parker said. ''We've been through everything this year - injuries, people coming in and out. We've had to fight the whole year. This is something we didn't really talk about.''

Parker had 16 points and nine rebounds Friday as the Sparks nearly stole the opener, falling 67-65.

Although the Lynx are 17-2 at home in the playoffs - the best home winning percentage for any team the postseason - and have advanced to the last four conference finals, Parker remains confident.

''Minnesota did what they were supposed to do,'' Parker said. ''Now we have to do what we are supposed to do."

The Sparks are a win away from advancing to their first conference finals series since 2012 despite having no answer for Moore.

After scoring a playoff career-high 33 points and adding four steals in Game 1, she scored 27 and had another four steals Sunday. Moore has made 22 of 43 shots - 8 of 16 from 3-point range. The rest of the team is 2 of 12 from beyond the arc.

Sylvia Fowles, second on Minnesota with 15.3 points per game, has totaled 15 points in the first two contests.

Dodgers, D-backs meet up

September 22, 2015

ARIZONA DIAMONDBACKS (72-78) at LOS ANGELES DODGERS (85-64)

First pitch: Tuesday, 10:10 p.m. ET
Sportsbook.ag Line: Arizona +155, Los Angeles -165, Total: 7.5

The Dodgers look to avoid losing their fourth straight game when they host the Diamondbacks on Tuesday.

The Diamondbacks are not going to make the postseason this year, but they are a tough team and come into this one after having won three of their past four games and four of their past six. The Dodgers, meanwhile, have not been playing their best baseball lately. They have lost their past three games and hold only a seven-game lead on the Giants in the division. The Dodgers will need to pick up some wins in the remainder of this series against the Diamondbacks, as they’ll be facing San Francisco in a four-game set in the near future.

This game will feature a pair of lefties on the mound, as LHP Robbie Ray (4-12, 3.72 ERA, 101 K) of the Diamondbacks takes on LHP Alex Wood (11-10, 3.63 ERA, 128 K) of the Dodgers. This head-to-head matchup has been all Los Angeles recently, as the Dodgers are 11-5 against the Diamondbacks this season and 6-1 when playing as the host. One thing favoring Arizona is the fact that the team is 10-3 against the money line in road games after three straight games where nobody committed an error this season. The Diamondbacks are, however, a lousy 16-35 against the money line after having won three of their past four games over the past two seasons.

C Tuffy Gosewisch (Knee) is out for the season for Arizona and Los Angeles will likely be without 3B Justin Turner (Knee) in addition to SS Jimmy Rollins (Finger) and OF Yasiel Puig (Hamstring), who are both out indefinitely for the team.

The Diamondbacks have won three of their past four games and now send Robbie Ray to the mound against a struggling Dodgers squad. Ray struggled in his most recent start, pitching just 4.2 innings against the Padres on Sep. 16 and allowing four earned runs in the loss. He did, however, shut down the Dodgers on Sep. 11. He pitched 5.0 innings and didn’t allow a single earned run in that start. He’ll need to channel that and put forth a solid effort on Tuesday.

1B Paul Goldschmidt (.316, 29 HR, 101 RBI) hit a homer in the 8-4 victory on Monday and he was 2-for-4 with two runs in the game. Goldschmidt will be very excited to be going up against Wood on Tuesday, as he is 4-for-7 with two homers and four RBI against the pitcher in his career.

OF Yasmany Tomas (.282, 9 HR, 46 RBI) hit his first homer since Aug. 21 on Monday night. The Diamondbacks would love to get him going against, as he can be a force at the plate when he is seeing the ball well. OF A.J. Pollock (.320, 17 HR, 68 RBI) is on a 10-game hitting streak entering this game. He is always a threat at the plate and will need to provide some production in order to help out Goldschmidt.

Alex Wood is coming off of his best start in a Dodgers uniform, pitching eight innings and allowing just one hit in a shutout against the Rockies on Sep. 16. He struck out five batters in that game and didn’t walk one. While that was an extremely impressive outing, he did struggle the last time he faced the Diamondbacks. Wood couldn’t get out of the second inning just two starts ago against this team, allowing six earned runs on eight hits in 1.2 innings of work versus Arizona on Sep. 11. He’ll need to figure himself out and avoid another outing like that on Tuesday.

1B Adrian Gonzalez (.281, 28 HR, 87 RBI) struggled offensively late in August and early in September, but he has found his swing recently. Over the past 10 games, Gonzalez has seen his average rise from .276 to .281. He homered in the loss to the Diamondbacks on Monday and will need to keep producing at the plate for this team.

2B Howie Kendrick (.294, 9 HR, 50 RBI) is another guy who can help this team offensively. Kendrick missed a month due to a hamstring injury and is just 1-for-6 at the plate since returning, but he had a streak of five straight multi-hit games before going down. He’ll need to knock off the rust and get this team back on the right path or the division lead could start to slip out of the Dodgers’ hands.
