Travers Stakes Preview

August 28, 2015

Triple Crown winner American Pharoah will try to keep his historic, remarkable roll going when he faces nine others in the $1.6 million, G1 Travers going 1 ¼ miles at historic Saratoga in upstate New York this Saturday. Post time is set for 5:46 EDT and it will go as race 11 on an action packed, star studded card that features six other stakes races, five of which are G1s.

Despite the plethora of talent on the undercard, there is no doubt that it’s all about the champ, as Saratoga Springs has been dubbed “Pharoahtoga” since his connections, Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert and his owners, Zayat Stables, announced last weekend after a sensational seven furlong drill in 1:23 1/5 at Del Mar that American Pharoah would indeed try his hand in the Midsummer Derby.

Since becoming the first Triple Crown winner in 37 years with a hard fought tally in the G1 Kentucky Derby and gate to wire scores in both the G1 Preakness and G1 Belmont Stakes, he’s raced just once, down at Monmouth Park on the Jersey Shore, when he gave Baffert his record eighth win in the G1 Haskell Invitational last out.

Under regular rider Victor Espinoza, recently announced as a member of the cast of the new season of “Dancing With the Stars,” American Pharoah sat off the early pace of Competitive Edge before making the lead on the far turn while on his way to a throttled down 2 ¼ victory, his eighth straight and seventh G1 win of his nine race career.

With an apparent lack of any other early speed in the Travers, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see American Pharoah back on the front end under Espinoza in here. They’ll break from post 2.

The same weekend American Pharoah won the Haskell, Texas Red and Frosted finished one-two in the local prep for the Travers, the G2 Jim Dandy.

Winner of the G1 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile last fall, Texas Red was winless in just two starts this year going into the Jim dandy in a season that’s been altered by a foot issue. But trainer Keith Desormeaux felt his colt was back after a solid second in the G3 Dwyer behind the undefeated Speightster at Belmont on Independence Day.

Ridden by Keith’s brother Kent, Texas Red was kept closer to the pace in the Jim Dandy, which was just a four horse field, and managed to get first run and hold off the favored Frosted by a half-length.

His newfound tactical speed could put him in position to have first crack at American Pharoah in here but could also put him in the disadvantageous spot of being the one to do the dirty work and chase the champ. He’ll break from post 4.

Frosted, the 3-5 chalk in the Jim Dandy, lost a shoe soon after the start but still managed to run a bang-up race when completely up against it from a pace dynamic.

Trained by Kiaran McLaughlin, who decided to stick to his guns and stay with his off-the-pace style, Frosted has run very well in all of his starts since a minor breathing issue was corrected in the winter.

A win in the G1 Wood Memorial was followed by a fourth place finish in the Derby and runner-up finishes in the Belmont and Jim Dandy. McLaughlin and his owners, Godolphin Racing, have been pointing to this race since the Derby. He’ll break from post 6 under Joel Rosario.

Keen Ice has made up ground in his last two starts, a third place Belmont finish and when he was a hard charging second in the Haskell last out and should appreciate the ten furlongs though he is still eligible for an entry level allowance contest. Javier Castellano rides for the first time for trainer Dale Romans from post 7.

The New York bred Upstart was at the very top of the division when the season began but tailed off since being DQed from the win in the G2 Fountain of Youth at Gulfstream this past winter. He returned from a dismal, last place Derby finish to be third in the Haskell last out for trainer Rick Violette. Upstart is a perfect two for two at the Spa and will be ridden for the first time by leading rider Irad Ortiz, Jr. They’ll break from the rail.

Tale of Verve closed from far back to grab place money over the slop in the Preakness for trainer Dallas Stewart but was nowhere to be found in the Belmont or last out in the G2 West Virginia Derby at Mountaineer. Gary Stevens rides from post 8.

Smart Transition will try to follow in the footsteps of last years’ Travers winner V.E. Day by using a victory in the Curlin at the Spa last out as a springboard to an upset score in here. Trained by John Shirreffs, Smart Transition closed nicely when four wide last out to win going away and should have little difficulty in getting the extra furlong. John Velazquez, the winningest rider in the history of Saratoga, rides from post 10.

Frammento gets a new rider in Jose Ortiz, his ninth in eleven career starts, as he looks for just the second win of his career for Hall of Famer Nick Zito. He’ll break from post 5. Mid Ocean broke his maiden in start number six at Delaware in his most recent for trainer George Weaver. Manny Franco rides from post 3. King of New York, third most recently in the Curlin for Ken McPeek, would break from post 9 with Julien Leparoux but may opt to run in the G3 Smarty Jones on Saturday at Parx instead of the Travers.

TRAVERS PLAY OF THE DAY:

I think American Pharoah is getting beat. I’m playing Frosted to win and making a trifecta part-wheel using Frosted over American Pharoah, Texas Red and Frammento over all. Good luck!!!

At the Gate - Saturday

August 29, 2015

The hype for American Pharoah seems to be growing, with an estimated 15,000 fans flocking to Saratoga on Friday morning just to watch the Triple Crown winner gallop.

That was a gallop, not even an official workout for the $1.6 million Travers (G1) where the Bob Baffert trainee was installed as the 1-5 betting favorite.

In the close to four decades I have been following horse racing I have not seen anything like this. Pictures were being sent out on social media on Friday night of fans lining up outside the gates at Saratoga so they could get in first thing in the morning and have first dibs on a good place to view the race.

The track is sold out on Saturday, as the New York Racing Association limited ticket sales to 50,000. Saratoga Springs is a buzz, and every bar and restaurant will be full of fans cheering on the colt as he goes for his ninth victory in a row.

NBC will cover the action in a two-hour telecast that gets underway at 5:00 ET. The Saratoga card gets started early at 11:45am ET and includes six Grade 1 races along with a Grade 2.

Four of the races are Breeders’ Cup Challenge ‘Win and You’re In” races, but they are no doubt being overshadowed by the appearance of the Triple Crown winner.

Earlier in the card, we get to see last year’s Breeders’ Cup Distaff (G1) winner Untapable take on Stopchargingmaria in the $750,000 Personal Ensign (G1).

The $500,000 Ballerina (G1) drew some very good fillies and mares including 14 for 20 La Verdad and Dame Dorothy, who has won seven of her nine career starts.

The $500,000 King’s Bishop (G1) features Amsterdam (G2) winner Holy Boss, Woody Stephens (G2) winner March, Ohio Derby victor Mr. Z and Pat Day Mile (G3) winner Competitive Edge.

The $700,000 Forego (G1) will match up The Big Beast and Private Zone with a berth to the Breeders’ Cup Sprint (G1) on the line.

Last year’s Breeders’ Cup Turf (G1) runner up Flintshire comes across the pond for the $1 million Sword Dancer (G1). The five-year-old is going to head back home for the Arc d’ Triomphe and then if all goes well will return to the U.S. for the Turf at Keeneland.

While we may have trouble making money on the Travers, there are plenty of other good betting opportunities on the 13-race card.

Here is today’s opening race from Saratoga to get the day off to a good start:

SAR Race 1 OClm $25,000N1X (11:45 ET)
8 Grey Wizard 7-2
1 Belisarius 2-1
5 Request 5-2
3 Good Response 7-2

Analysis: Grey Wizard was a good-looking maiden winner last out in his fourth career start, drawing away to win by 3 1/4 lengths at today's 1 3/8 mile distance. The colt was a good third two back off a three-month break and looks as if he still has plenty of upside. He has a nice pedigree, by Kitten's Joy out of a stakes placed Cozzene mare that has dropped two other winners including dirt stakes winner Street Storm ($101,232).

Belisarius was beaten just a head last out in a game effort and now has come up short at this condition eight times since landing in the U.S. last summer. The colt is usually in the mix, landing in the money in seven straight without a win. This is not a real tough spot facing just five foes after the scratches of the main track only runners. He broke his maiden on the fake stuff but does have three sibs that have won on grass. His mare Lasting Chance ($222,492) was a stakes winner on the main track.

Wagering
WIN: #8 to win at 5-2 or better.
EX: 1,8 / 1,5,8
TRI: no play

Today’s Featured Race of the Day from Saratoga:

SAR Race 10 The Sword Dancer G1 (5:04 ET)
2 Flintshire 8-5
4 Red Rifle 4-1
6 Messi 10-1
5 Twilight Eclipse 7-2

Analysis: Flintshire returns to the U.S. after running a good second to the highly regarded gal Treve, who won the last two Arcs. The Andre Fabre trainee made the trip to Santa Anita last year for the Breeders' Cup Turf (G1) and ran a game second to Main Sequence, beaten a half-length for the top spot. He came out of that race to win the Hong Kong Vase (G1) at Sha Tin in his following start. The well-traveled five-year-old should be able to handle these, and then the plan is to go to the Arc and return to Keeneland for the Turf.

Red Rifle earned a career top speed fig last out in the Blowing Green Handicap (G2) at 1 3/8 miles. He won the Yankee Affair last September at this distance and is at the top of his game. Jockey Javier Castellano's agent had a call on this guy and Twilight Express and tried to get off the latter to stick with this guy. The stewards got involved and he lost the mount on both.

Messi steps up off a pair of win against optional claimers in his first two starts after landing with the Motion barn. He only has one try in Group company and that was a Group 3 in Germany and it did not go well. Motion is not going to stick him in here unless he thinks he has a shot and this guy should be a decent price.

Wagering
WIN: #2 to win at 9-5 or better.
EX: 2,4 / 2,4,5,6
TRI: 2,4 / 2,4,5,6 / 2,4,5,6,8

Live Longshots:
These are price plays for exotic players looking to find a couple of extra contenders to use in their trifecta and superfecta wagers. Or for those with smaller bankrolls, you might want to get in a small win-place wager.

Saratoga
R2: #6 Attraction 8-1
R5: #10 Alcazar de Maram 12-1
R5: #2 Ascend 8-1
R8: #10 March 10-1
R10: #6 Messi 10-1
R11: #7 Keen Ice 12-1
R13: #7 Oklahoma Den 8-1

Good luck today!

Red Sox go over when seeing certain totals

The over is 17-4 when the Red Sox face a total set between 7.0 and 8.5 and it is looking like the total will be in that range for this afternoon's game against the New York Mets.

The Red Sox will send starter Joe Kelly (5/18 ERA, 12-8 O/U) to the mound to go up against Mets starter Jacob deGrom (2.29 ERA, 12-11 O/U), with a total currently at 7.0 runs.

Oakland getting F's on the road of late

The Oakland A's haven't had much to play for this season, but they've been especially poor away from home as the season winds down.

The A's have gone just 4-17 in their last 21 road games and have lost three consecutive games heading into their meeting with the Arizona Diamondbacks at Chase Field Saturday evening.

Their recent drought away from home has dropped their road record to 25-38 ahead of Saturday's tilt.

Aaron Brooks is expected to get the start for the A's while the Dbacks are scheduled to counter with Jhoulys Chacin.

Saturday's NFL Week 3 preseason betting primer

The third week of the NFL preseason continues with a whopping 11 games on the board Saturday. With so many preseason games on the schedule and camp injuries claiming plenty of players already, it can be hard to stay on top of the action.

Pittsburgh Steelers at Buffalo Bills (-2.5, 42.5)

* With Martavis Bryant out for the first four games of the regular season, the role of WR2 now falls to Markus Wheaton. Expect quarterback Ben Roethlisberger and Wheaton to keep working together to give Wheaton a bit of a confidence boost heading into Week 1.

* The Bills will start EJ Manuel under center Saturday. This adds a little more speculation to who will actually be the Bills' No. 1 quarterback to begin the season. Manuel played well in the Bills' second preseason game against the Cleveland Browns, completing nine of 14 passes for 11 yards.

Atlanta Falcons at Miami Dolphins (-4, 43.5)

* Atlanta Falcons rookie running back Tevin Coleman will make his debut versus the Miami Dolphins Saturday. Coleman, a third-round pick in this year's draft, has missed the first two games due to a hamstring injury. Devonta Freeman's status is unknown.

* The third week of the NFL preseason is widely used as a "dress rehearsal" for the starters and things are no different in Miami. The starters are expected to play the entire first half, including quarterback Ryan Tannehill. Tannehill has completed 81 percent of his passes thus far in the preseason, but the Fish are 0-2 SU (1-1 ATS).

Cleveland Browns at Tampa Bay Buccaneers (-2.5, 41)

* Cleveland Browns quarterback Johnny Manziel will sit out the final two games of the preseason to heal his sore right elbow. This limits the Browns to two healthy quarterbacks in Josh McCown and Thad Lewis.

* Bucs QB Jameis Winston showed progress in the second preseason game and will get his most playing time tonight. Winston was eight of 13 for 90 yards and registered a rushing touchdown in Tampa's 25-11 win over the Cincinnati Bengals in Week 2. The Bucs covered as 2.5-point home faves.

Minnesota Vikings at Dallas Cowboys (-1, 42)

* If anything the Vikings have been red-hot in the preseason. Minnesota is 3-0 both straight up and against the spread heading into their clash with the Cowboys. The Vikes have won by 11 (vs. Pittsburgh), 10 (vs. Tampa Bay) and eight points (vs. Oakland) in their trio of preseason games.

* Cowboys wide receiver Dez Bryant will not play versus the Vikings and is likely to sit out for the remainder of the preseason, according to Jerry Jones. "I’m not so sure we’re satisfied that it’s necessary for him to extend that [hamstring] that he’s got, since he did extend it with probably a suddenness that had he probably been out there for longer periods of time, he might not have had that happen," Jones said on his radio show on 105.3 The Fan Friday morning. "Let’s give him the rest. We don’t have to have him [Saturday] night. That’s the way I would look at it, and do look at it."

New York Jets at New York Giants (-1.5, 42)

* The Jets and Giants meet every summer since 1969 and while the Jets hold the edge (24-21-1 SU), they are really hot when billed as the "away" team. The two teams have played in the same stadium since 1984 and the Jets have won the previous four meetings and eight of the last nine when they've been in the role of the visiting team as they are Saturday.

* Despite the above the stat, the Giants are the top pick on Saturday's NFL board with just under 69 percent of the support from users according to Covers Consensus. Click here to check out the latest.

Chicago Bears at Cincinnati Bengals (-3.5, 42)

* Bears wide receiver Alshon Jeffery has remained "day-to-day" and his status for Saturday's meeting with the Bengals is up in the air. Jeffery hasn't practiced since Aug. 12 as he nurses a calf injury. He's not the only WR banged up, however, as Kevin White (leg) is on the PUP list and Marquess Wilson (hamstring) and Eddie Royal (hip) also have knocks.

* There hasn't been a ton of offensive fireworks in Bengals games in the preseason. The Under has cashed in both of Cincy's preseason matchups as they defeated the Giants 23-10 (Under 37) and lost the Bucs 25-11 (Under 40) in weeks one and two respectively.

Washington Redskins at Baltimore Ravens (-4, 43.5)

* The Redskins had announced Thursday that RGIII, who was diagnosed with a shoulder stinger and concussion after repeated hits at Detroit last week, was cleared to play in the Redskins' preseason game Saturday in Baltimore. However, Dr. Robert Kurtzke said Friday in a statement: "Upon further scrutiny today of the neuropsychology data, I agree with the neuropsychologist that he should be held from game play this weekend and be retested in one to two weeks before a firm conclusion to return to game play can be made."

* Points have been plentiful in Ravens games this season as the Over has cashed in both of their contests. The Raves defeated the New Orleans Saints 30-27 (Over 38) in Week 1 and were thumped by the Philadelphia Eagles 40-17 (Over 44.5) in Week 2.

Seattle Seahawks at San Diego Chargers (+2.5, 42)

* Multiple Seahawks players battling injury could return for Saturday's game as Richard Sherman (hip), Marcus Burley (groin), Will Blackmon (groin), Bruce Irvin (concussion protocol) and Jesse Williams (illness) could suit up. Safety Earl Thomas (shoulder) remains out and is prepping for a Week 1 return.

* Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers sat out Week 2 meeting with the Arizona Cardinals, but head coach Mike McCoy confirmed that his QB would play versus the Seahawks Saturday.

Philadelphia Eagles at Green Bay Packers (+6, 47.5)

* The Eagles have been the highest-scoring team in the preseason by a wide margin. The Eagles have put up 76 points in two games while opponents have managed just 27. The Over has cashed in both Eagles games by 5.5 and 12.5 points in Weeks 1 and 2 respectively.

* It looks as if Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers will not play versus the Eagles. The offensive line is not 100 percent and Rodgers says that he is happy with that work that's been done with the No. 1 offense and he should be ready to go in Week 1.

Indianapolis Colts at St. Louis Rams (-2.5, 42.5)

* If you're a Colts bettor and you've backed them in the first two preseason games, you've been left disappointed. The Colts are 0-2 both straight up and against the spread following losses to the Eagles (326-10, +4.5) and Bears (23-11, -3.5).

* The Rams' offensive line still has a lot of work and the players know it. "We want to do well and we want to clean up a lot of mistakes we've made," Barrett Jones, who is competing for the starting center job, said. "We feel like we've shot ourselves in the foot too many times — too many penalties and mental errors. But at the same time we're not putting too much pressure on it. We know we've still got time to fix everything that we've done wrong, so we're excited about it. We're looking forward to hopefully getting out there and putting up a good showing."

San Francisco 49ers at Denver Broncos (-5, 42.5)

* 49ers' starting linebacker Ahmad Brooks was sent home this week following his misdemeanor sexual battery charges. Linebacker NaVorro Bowman commented simply, "That's a big loss for us." Corey Lemonier appears to be the starter now.

* The Broncos are one of six teams that remain unbeaten both straight up and against the spread in the preseason. Denver is 2-0 SU and ATS following a 22-20 win at the Seattle Seahawks as 4.5-point dogs and a 14-10 win at the Houston Texans as 2.5-point pups.

Pitcher change announced - Aaron Brooks, Oakland

Arizona vs. Oakland on August 29 at 8:10 PM. Previous Starter: Felix Doubront.

Latos struggling since joining Dodgers

Mat Latos is expected to toe the slab for the Los Angeles Dodgers with the Chicago Cubs in town Saturday evening and he'll look to change his luck since he joined the club.

Latos is 0-2 with a 6.75 ERA in three starts since the Dodgers acquired him from the Miami Marlins. He gave up five runs (four earned) and seven hits in 4 2/3 innings while losing to Cincinnati in his last outing.

The Dodgers are presently -101 with the Cubs, who are expected to counter with Jon Lester, currently -107.

Hutchison to get start for Jays after AAA stint

Due to three days off in its schedule, Toronto shuffled Drew Hutchinson to Triple-A Buffalo with the intent of having the right-hander make one start before being recalled for Saturday's tilt versus the Detroit Tigers.

The 25-year-old has won his last three outings for the Blue Jays and improved to 4-0 in his last seven on Aug. 16 after allowing one run on three hits in 6 2/3 innings of a 3-1 triumph over the Yankees. Hutchinson has flourished at home, posting a 10-1 mark with a 1.08 WHIP while limiting the opposition to a .226 batting average.

The Tigers are expected to counter with Buck Farmer.

The Blue Jays are presently -222.
