Game of the day: Stampeders at Blue Bombers
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Stampeders lead the West Division with a 6-2 record, but are just 1-7 against the spread heading into Saturday's game.

Calgary Stampeders at Winnipeg Blue Bombers (+5.5, 49.5)

The Calgary Stampeders look to win their fourth consecutive game when they travel to Winnipeg to tangle with the Blue Bombers on Saturday. The Stampeders are starting to flex their muscles as they downed the Saskatchewan Roughriders 34-31 to move two points clear of the Edmonton Eskimos in the race for first place in the West Division.

Calgary has dominated the Blue Bombers by winning 11 of the past 12 meetings, including the last five contests on the road and a 26-25 home victory in Week 4. Winnipeg looks to halt a two-game losing skid after letting a fourth-quarter lead slip away in the 27-20 setback to the Toronto Argonauts on Aug. 14. The Blue Bombers have dropped four of their last five games and are tied with the BC Lions in the battle for the final playoff spot in the West Division. Robert Marve looked fairly sharp in his CFL debut and has been given the starting nod once again ahead of Brian Brohm as he hopes to lead Winnipeg past Calgary at home for the first time since July 10, 2009.

TV: 6 p.m. ET, TSN

LINE HISTORY: Books opened the Bombers as 6-point home dogs, but that is now +5.5. The total opened at 50 and is down to 49.5.

INJURY REPORT: Blue Bombers - RB Paris Cotton (Questionable, arm), WR Darvin Adams (Questionable, upper body).

ABOUT THE STAMPEDERS (6-2 SU, 1-7 ATS, 3-5 O/U): Bo Levi Mitchell is enjoying his best stretch of the year as he's thrown for 875 yards and accounted for nine total touchdowns during Calgary's winning streak, including 303 yards and three scores against the Roughriders. Eric Rogers had seven receptions for a game-high 105 yards and caught a 46-yard Hail Mary pass at the end of the first half against Saskatchewan to record his sixth touchdown in his last six games. "I didn't know if Bo's arm was strong enough to get it there," Rogers joked with reporters. "I just happened to get my hands on it and they didn't jump and I did."

ABOUT THE BLUE BOMBERS (3-5 SU, 3-5 ATS, 2-6 O/U): Marve completed 18-of-29 passes for 203 yards and a touchdown while running back Cameron Marshall finished with 139 yards from scrimmage and a score filling in for the injured Paris Cotton. Linebacker Jasper Simmons, who was granted his release by Calgary last week after his agent attacked the team on social media, was added to Winnipeg's practice roster. "You know I just want a fresh start and I want to contribute now," Simmons told reporters. "People can criticize me for what happened in Calgary but every person on the field wants to play."

TRENDS:

* Over is 6-1 in the last seven meetings in Winnipeg.
* Under is 6-0 in Blue Bombers last six games overall.
* Stampeders are 1-8 ATS in their last nine games overall.
* Over is 5-1 in Stampeders last six road games.

Preview: Bombers turn up the urgency vs. Stamps

#CFLGameDay

WINNIPEG -- If the real season for some teams starts Labour Day, it starts for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers a week early.

Rested and refreshed coming off the bye, they face a crucial test on Saturday night in front of the home crowd at Investors Group Field. The division-leading and defending Grey Cup Champion Calgary Stampeders are in town, the first of six West Division opponents the Bombers will face in the next seven games.

Yes, it’s accurate to say these next seven weeks will determine the fate of Bombers’ season.

“We’ve got to win some games here, that’s all there is to it,” linebacker Sam Hurl told BlueBombers.com. “We’ve lost the last two in a row and it’s a big deal to us to make sure we get back on the winning track.”

The Bombers are 3-5 and their season right now could go in one of two directions. They currently sit just outside of a playoff spot with Montreal, fourth in the East with a 4-5 record, on pace to cross over. After facing Calgary on Saturday and meeting the halfway point in the schedule, the team will probably have an accurate assessment of exactly where it is.

Up until now that’s been a mixed bag. The Bombers have led by as many as eight points in five of their eight games this season, while they owned a 16-0 lead in an eventual loss to the Stamps back in Week 4. But they’ve also been blown out in three games, outscored 122-37 in two losses to Hamilton and one to Edmonton.

“They’re a good all-around team and it’s definitely a good test for us,” said Hurl of Saturday’s opponent. “It’s the middle of the season, it’s becoming crunch time now so it’s definitely going to be an exciting game.”

“I’m pumped for it and I think it’ll be a good test to see where we’re at as a team.”

While the Stampeders will lean on star 25-year-old pivot Bo Levi Mitchell, 21-4 in his first 25 career CFL starts, the Bombers counter with 26-year-old Robert Marve making just his second career start. Marve made his first professional start in a 27-20 loss to the Argos entering the bye, accounting for 240 of the Bombers’ 305 total yards.

Marve looked good making plays both with his arms and his legs, but with his first career start under his belt and now some extra prep time off a bye, he along with his teammates expect a different outcome in start number two.

“I need to be able to ride in the fourth,” said Marve. “I’m excited about the fourth.”

“I think the last time maybe I was a little bit too [focused on] not making a mistake and thinking ‘I’m young, it’s my first game’. But I’m ready to go all out.”

“There needs to be a celebration in the fourth, it’s time to put on for Winnipeg and the fans.”

Marve threw for 203 yards on 18-of-29 passing against the Argos and threw his second career touchdown pass, however he was also intercepted. He added 37 yards on the ground on seven carries.

While all eyes will be on Marve, another key to victory will be the Bombers’ defence. That unit has put together three solid halves in a row, pitching a shutout against Hamilton in the second half of a 38-8 loss back on Aug. 9 then holding Trevor Harris to a season-low 168 passing yards.

The Bombers rank seventh in total yards and no better than fourth in any defensive category, but there’s been noted improvement under Defensive Coordinator Richie Hall.

“I think we’re moving in the right direction,” said Jamaal Westerman, whose six sacks tie him for the league lead. “Guys are communicating better, guys are flying around.”

“The plays are coming to us now. Do your job and good things will happen. You stay in your gap and the ball will come.”

While the Bombers have the advantage of coming off a bye week and getting well-rested, that’s balanced by the Stampeders coming into this game as the CFL’s hottest team. The defending Grey Cup Champs have hit their stride just before the midway point, grinding out a 34-31 road win over the Riders a week after toppling Ottawa 48-3.

Player Spotlight

QB Robert Marve
Winnipeg Blue Bombers
The Bombers' young pivot will be eager to prove something in his second career start.

RB Matt Walter
Calgary Stampeders
Now out of Cornish's shadow, can the Calgary Dinos product finally prove he can be an elite CFL running back?

The Stampeders haven’t been as prolific as usual with Jon Cornish absent from the backfield, currently ranking sixth in the league with 93.1 rushing yards per game. But against the Riders the ground attack was powerful, led by 110 rushing yards by Matt Walter on 20 carries.

Walter and rookie runner Tory Harrison have formed a dual backfield to replace Calgary’s star offensive player and those two will continue to hold the key to the Stamps’ offence moving forward.

“I thought our running game improved as the game went along,” Head Coach and General Manager Jon Hufnagel told Stampeders.com. “They’re two very talented running backs so it’s nice to have a mixture in there.”

“Whether it’s Jon or Matt and now it’s Matt and Tory, they both bring different elements to the game.”

Walter has averaged 4.9 yards per carry as the focal point in Calgary’s backfield, and the 26-year-old feels he’s only just getting started – that he’s getting an opportunity and now it’s time to run with it.

“The guys up front were making gaps, and when you make that happen it’s easy to exploit that,” said Walter of his performance against Saskatchewan. “Once you do that a few times it comes easier as you go. We were able to take advantage of what the defence was giving us and we did a great job up front.”

“I think there’s more potential that I can reach here, so I’m looking forward to doing that,” he added.

Quarterback Mitchell is again emerging as an MOP candidate, albeit late this season after a slow start, currently owning a 97.4 quarterback rating with 12 touchdowns and six interceptions to go with 2,168 yards – fourth in the CFL.

And outside of that, the Stamps quietly own the league’s third best defence and sit in the top four in virtually every major category.

In short, Calgary is hitting its form. Now the Stamps face another test against a Bomber team that put them in a 16-0 hole earlier this season, requiring a 40-yard field goal by Rene Paredes to give them the win with 2:14 left in the game.

“It’s a one-game season,” said Stamps veteran defender Keon Raymond. “Our focus is make sure we come out and we play our best football no matter who is up. It just so happens to be Winnipeg and we know they’re coming off their bye week, they’re fresh.”

“I know they’re going to by flying around and it’s going to be a hostile crowd. It’s going to be loud so we have to make sure we come out and play together and have that mentality we had last week, us against the world.”

The last time they met

Last Meeting:
Saturday, July 18, 2015
Calgary 26, Winnipeg 25

The Bombers built a 16-0 first-half lead, but the Stampeders rallied on the strength of a special teams touchdown and a dominant fourth-quarter performance by Jon Cornish. After three fourth-quarter lead changes, Rene Paredes' 40-yard field goal marked the game's deciding points.

Game Notes:

- Eric Rogers has scored a receiving touchdown in six straight games, the first player since Weston Dressler late in 2012 to accomplish the feat.

- Rogers also has nine touchdowns in his first 10 career CFL games, the second-best start to a career in CFL history behind Curtis Mayfield’s 12 in 10 games with Las Vegas in 1994.

- Bo Levi Mitchell’s win-loss record of 21-4 through his first 25 CFL starts is also second-best in league history, behind only Jackie Parker’s 22-3 start. It’s worth noting, however, that Parker lost his next three consecutive starts after that.

- The Bombers had only one bye week last season and lost coming off it. They also went 0-1 off the bye in 2013, while they won each time in 2011 and 2012 off the bye week.

- Cameron Marshall has put together a strong rookie CFL season, leading the Bombers with four touchdowns and a pair of two-point converts on 52 carries and nine receptions. He had 84 receiving yards in the loss to Toronto two weeks ago and rushed for a career-high 55 yards on 14 attempts.

- The Bombers are 3-0 this year when winning the turnover battle and 7-0 overall under Mike O’Shea, They’re 0-5 this year, however, and 3-16 since the start of 2014 when either tying or losing in the turnover battle.

- Marquay McDaniel makes the most of his targets, sitting number two among all receivers catching 80.9 per cent of his targets. Brad Sinopoli’s 81.6 per cent is first in the CFL.

Preview: Liberty (19-8) at Sun (12-16)

Date: August 29, 2015 7:00 PM EDT

The New York Liberty cemented their spot in the postseason Friday night. It's looking very unlikely that their next opponent will join them.

The two teams on opposite ends of the Eastern Conference meet Saturday night in Connecticut with the Liberty fresh off the high of clinching a playoff spot and the Sun looking to snap a season-defining six-game losing streak.

The Liberty (19-8) secured their first postseason berth since 2012 with a convincing 81-68 home win over West-leading Minnesota on Friday night.

New York, 2 1/2 games up on Chicago in the East, holds the WNBA's top record with seven games left, and leads the Lynx by two in the loss column. The WNBA's top teams play again Sept. 6 in Minnesota.

New York natives Epiphanny Prince and Tina Charles led the way in the first matchup. Prince had 22 points on 10-of-16 shooting and Charles finished with 18 points and 11 rebounds for her 10th double-double.

Charles, averaging 20.5 points over her last six games, joined her hometown team in 2014, while Prince came home this season.

'It's really special for me,' Charles told the team's official website. 'I haven't been in the playoffs the last two or three years, but it means more with this franchise. Being home, Epiphanny and I have always dreamed of winning the championship here and now we're one step closer.'

The Sun (12-16) have taken several steps back this month, falling into a tie with Atlanta for last place in the East - 4 1/2 back of Washington for the final playoff spot with six games left.

Connecticut fell by an average of 11.4 points during the first five defeats of its current skid, the first of which was a 90-78 home loss to New York on Aug. 14. The loss to Phoenix on Thursday arguably hurt the most, an 81-80 heartbreaker on a Leilani Mitchell 3-pointer at the buzzer.

The Liberty have won their last four matchups against the Sun, including the first two this season. They're 9-5 on the road and had a three-game winning streak away from home snapped with an 80-79 loss on Sunday at Indiana.

The Sun are 7-8 at Mohegan Sun Arena, including three straight losses.

Prince had 23 points, seven rebounds, six assists and six steals in New York's win over Connecticut on Aug. 14, while Charles poured in a season-high 31 points. Connecticut's Alex Bentley and Kelsey Bone scored 19 and 17 points, respectively.

Charles had a game-high 22 points and 12 rebounds in a 64-57 win over the Sun on July 16 in New York.

'We still have seven games left so a lot can happen,' Charles said. 'We just need to take care of every game.'

Preview: Sky (17-11) at Dream (12-16)

Date: August 29, 2015 7:00 PM EDT

The Chicago Sky failed to reach the playoffs in their first seven seasons in the WNBA, finishing below .500 each year.

They've recorded the second-most wins in franchise history in 2015, and another victory Saturday night against the Atlanta Dream could put Chicago in the postseason for the third straight year.

The Sky went 89-149 from 2006-12 before drafting Elena Delle Donne with the second overall pick in 2013, when they set a team record by going 24-10 and finishing first in the Eastern Conference.

Chicago, though, was swept in the semifinals and finished under .500 again in 2014. However, that 15-19 record was good enough for fourth place in the East and the Sky went on a shocking playoff run that ended with Phoenix sweeping them in the WNBA Finals.

They have a 17-11 record this year and can return to the postseason with a victory over the Dream (12-16) and a Connecticut loss to conference-leading New York on Saturday.

The biggest reasons for that success are the play of MVP front-runner Delle Donne and veteran guard Cappie Pondexter. Delle Donne tops the league with 23.9 points per game and is among the leaders with an average of 8.8 rebounds, while Pondexter is second on the team with 14.7 points a contest.

"In this league, you don't see too many 6-foot-5 players who are able to shoot the 3, pull up or handle the ball the way (Delle Donne) does," Pondexter, in her first season with Chicago, told the team's official website.

"And on the defensive side of things, she can actually defend all five players. She's an incredible shot blocker."

Delle Donne had four blocks Sunday and Pondexter made a layup with 6 seconds left to give the Sky their second straight win, 66-64 at Washington.

The Dream are all too familiar with Delle Donne's stellar play.

She had 26 points and 10 rebounds in a 74-73 loss at Atlanta on June 19 before scoring a career-high 45 with 11 boards and six blocks in a 100-96 overtime victory at home five days later.

In the third matchup, Delle Donne had 27 points, eight rebounds and blocked four shots in a 97-92 home win July 21.

Angel McCoughtry hit a 16-foot jumper at the buzzer to give Atlanta the win in the first meeting and scored 34 in the overtime game, but she shot 6 for 17 and was in foul trouble in last month's matchup.

McCoughtry struggled again Friday at Indiana, shooting 3 for 12, but the Dream used a 29-17 scoring advantage in the fourth quarter to beat the Fever 90-84 for their season-high third straight win and fourth in five games.

Tiffany Hayes led the way with a career-best 28 points for Atlanta, which remained 4 1/2 games behind the Mystics for the final playoff spot in the East. The result also moved Chicago into a tie with Indiana for second place, 2 1/2 behind the Liberty.

Preseason Week 3 Essentials

Saturday, Aug. 29

Pittsburgh at Buffalo: Losing Pouncey is a massive blow, as centers of his caliber are hard to come by. Getting new starter Cody Wallace up to speed at such a key position will now be the main focus of the offense between now and the season opener. Fortunately, he does have experience. Bills head coach Rex Ryan hasn’t announced a starting QB for this one, which is setting up as the final battle before Matt Cassel or Tyrod Taylor is handed the reins.

N.Y. Jets at N.Y. Giants: Snoopy Bowl 2015 features a pair of 1-1 teams that have each seen their share of struggles thus far. Injuries have played a large role in the shaky starts for both MetLife Stadium tenants, so it will be fun to see how they respond in a game that always seems to be competitive since both teams typically want the back page spoils.

Atlanta at Miami: The Falcons haven’t had running backs Davonte Freeman and Tevin Coleman in either preseason game and are hoping those guys can each gain some seasoning in South Florida. QB Ryan Tannehill’s improvement has the Dolphins excited. He’s led the Fins to touchdowns in three of his four drives.

Minnesota at Dallas: After Tony Romo made a cameo in San Francisco on Sunday, he will undoubtedly get his longest in-game workload of the preseason here. Adrian Peterson will sit out another game, but the Vikings have averaged 23 points per game without him as the passing game has looked sharp.

Cleveland at Tampa Bay: Ex-Buc starter Josh McCown is nursing an injured ring finger and backup Johnny Manziel had to cut Sunday’s practice short due to a sore elbow, so this could wind up being a difficult trip for the winless Browns. Rookie starting QB Jameis Winston should get plenty of varied defensive looks to work against, which can only aid his development.

Washington at Baltimore: Remember when we all doubted Joe Flacco? It wasn’t that long ago, so you should. Heck, there are still people who think it’s funny to debate whether the Super Bowl XLVII MVP is an elite quarterback. He plays like one, is paid like one and comes off posting career-highs in passing yards (3,986) and TD throws (27), so the answer is yes. On the other end of the spectrum is Robert Griffin III, who is both polarizing and currently mediocre despite all the hype. Sadly, new Ravens backup Matt Schaub is more accomplished than either or RG III or Kirk Cousins, which has to keep owner Dan Snyder up at night.

Chicago at Cincinnati: After playing at Tampa on Monday night, the Bengals turn right around and host the Bears, so it will be interesting to see how head coach Marvin Lewis treats this game. The Bears’ depth has been impressive so far this preseason, as they’ve outscored opponents 38-0 in the second half of games thanks to the play of their backups. With Jay Cutler scheduled to play into the second half, Chicago is looking for him to lead the team to its first touchdown after coming up empty in the first two games.

Philadelphia at Green Bay: The Packers are reeling from the loss of Nelson and have probably seen enough out of Rodgers that they won’t see the value in exposing him here, but backup Scott Tolzien was also banged up in Pittsburgh, suffering a concussion. Chip Kelly’s desire to see Sam Bradford take more live-action snaps may be dwarfed by the need to keep him healthy and confident, so be sure to monitor this situation.

Indianapolis at St. Louis: Both of these teams have struggled mightily so far, but there’s no panic setting. The Colts will be looking to see how their o-line holds up against the Rams’ primary strength. St. Louis will be looking to get Nick Foles on track after a dreadful start thus far.

Seattle at San Diego: This one is slated for a national broadcast and should be entertaining. The Seahawks have predictably not looked like themselves given the rebuilt offensive line and the absence of Legion of Boom members in the secondary, so 0-2 isn’t a big deal. Pete Carroll will want to see improvement against a Chargers squad that will allow Philip Rivers to participate for the first time since he went 2-for-2 on the opening drive of the team’s preseason.

San Francisco at Denver: QB Peyton Manning wasn’t able to get a rhythm in his debut, coming up empty on four drives while racking up just 67 yards on 19 plays in Houston. Count on him playing into the second half here as he seeks to gain his footing in Gary Kubiak’s new offense. Colin Kaepernick is 4-for-8 for 27 yards in limited action, so the 49ers are looking forward to seeing how he fares with a heavier workload.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) Tom Brady overcame two early interceptions to lead his first touchdown drive of the preseason as the New England Patriots beat the Carolina Panthers 17-16 on Friday night.

The preseason has been a titanic struggle for Brady, who is awaiting word on his appeal of a four-game suspension for his role in ''Deflategate.''

After managing just three first downs in his first 11 preseason possessions, Brady finally got on track, leading an 80-yard scoring drive before halftime running the hurry-up offense. He capped the drive with a well-placed 18-yard touchdown pass to tight end Scott Chandler.

The Patriots played again without tight end Rob Gronkowski and wide receivers Brandon LaFell and Julian Edelman.

Carolina managed just two field goals in the first half behind Cam Newton and trailed 7-6 at halftime. Corey Brown bobbled away an easy TD pass from Newton - one of four Carolina drops in the first half.

LIONS 22, JAGUARS 17

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) - Matthew Stafford completed 11 of 15 passes for 173 yards and two touchdowns. The Lions (2-1) trailed most of the night, but rookie Zach Zenner's 3-yard touchdown run with 1:41 remaining was the winner.

Detroit played without star receiver Calvin Johnson for the third consecutive game, but Stafford carved up Jacksonville's secondary in a half of work. Stafford threw a perfect deep ball to Golden Tate for a 62-yarder in the second quarter and then hooked up with Corey Fuller for a 4-yard score.

Zenner had a 41-yard scamper that set up Fuller's score. He finished with 85 yards on eight carries.

Blake Bortles was the story again for Jacksonville (1-2). He completed 20 of 29 passes for 245 yards and a touchdown. He also ran for 38 yards, including two third-down scrambles that kept scoring drives alive.

CHIEFS 34, TITANS 10

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - Alex Smith threw for 171 yards and two touchdowns in less than a half, and the Chiefs' offense looked the sharpest it has all preseason in a weather-shortened game.

The game was called with 3 minutes, 50 seconds remaining after thunder rumbled and lightning streaked across the sky. Heavy rains had turned one end zone into a lake.

Smith was 16 of 18 before giving way to third-string quarterback Aaron Murray just before halftime. Murray played the rest of the game for the Chiefs (3-0), throwing for 146 yards with two touchdown passes and an interception as backup Chase Daniel got the night off.

Marcus Mariota got off to a slow start for Tennessee (1-2), misfiring on his first three throws. But the first-round pick out of Oregon was 7 of 8 for 99 yards the rest of the half.

49ers in turmoil as they face Broncos in exhibition game

August 28, 2015

A look at what to expect in Saturday night's preseason games:

49ERS AT BRONCOS, 9 p.m.

Peyton Manning hasn't had his pair of Pro Bowl receivers on the field with him since the playoffs. Emmanuel Sanders (hamstring) is sitting this one out and Demaryius Thomas is still working his way into ''football shape'' after missing the entire offseason program in a contract dispute. In his debut last week, Manning's four drives all ended in punts thanks to drops and flags.

Ronnie Hillman loves Denver's new zone blocking scheme. He leads the league with a 7.5-yard average this summer. ''I think this offense fits him very well ... because that's what he did at San Diego State, he was a great zone runner,'' general manager John Elway said.

The 49ers were dealt another blow this week when Ahmad Brooks, charged with misdemeanor sexual battery, was sent home from Colorado, where the team was practicing with the Broncos. Brooks was expected to start at the outside linebacker spot vacated by Aldon Smith's release three weeks ago. Third-year pro Corey Lemonier will now start.

''That's a big loss for us,'' linebacker NaVorro Bowman said, lamenting the latest absence of a key player. That list includes Smith, four key free agents and five retirees this offseason.

---

EAGLES AT PACKERS, 8 p.m.

Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers could just be a spectator.

The Packers lost top receiver Jordy Nelson to a season-ending right knee injury last week. The last thing coach Mike McCarthy needs is for the NFL MVP to get hurt, too, on a night when Green Bay will likely be without three starting offensive linemen because of injuries.

That means backups might get meaningful minutes trying to make the team.

''Personally, I'd like to be efficient,'' rookie quarterback Matt Blanchard on Thursday. ''It's our first showcase for the 2015 Packers. I know the starters aren't going to be playing, but for us it's our first time out on Lambeau this season and it's going to be a good night.''

McCarthy hadn't announced how he would handle playing time, so forgive Blanchard for being a little enthusiastic. An undrafted free agent from at Division III powerhouse Wisconsin-Whitewater, Blanchard faces long odds for making the Packers behind Rodgers, Scott Tolzien and rookie Brett Hundley, a fifth-round pick.

Tolzien isn't expected to play after being evaluated for a possible concussion. It might be up to Hundley and Blanchard to connect with young receivers Myles White and Jeff Janis with the Packers looking for options to replace Nelson.

For the Eagles, quarterback Sam Bradford wouldn't mind playing more than one drive to help shake off rust. He's coming back from tearing his left ACL twice in a 10-month span with the Rams. Bradford is now in charge of coach Chip Kelly's high-octane offense, but played one drive last weekend against Baltimore after sitting out the first exhibition game. He led the offense on a touchdown drive and absorbed two big hits. On one play, Terrell Suggs was penalized for tackling Bradford's knees on a handoff.

Kelly typically likes to play his starting quarterback into the third quarter of this game, but might have to weigh how much time Bradford needs on the field against the desire to limit exposure to injury. The Eagles like what they've seen from the limited snaps Bradford and running back DeMarco Murray had last week. Murray, who left Dallas as a free agent, ran for 17 yards and a touchdown on five carries.

---

BEARS AT BENGALS, 7:30 p.m.

Both teams want to see a lot more out of their offenses in the last chance for the starters to get it right. They'll rest for most of the final preseason game a week later.

Chicago's first-team offense has no touchdowns in the first two preseason games. Jay Cutler has led three drives inside the 20-yard line, but the Bears settled for field goals. The starting offense has produced only four field goals in the two games.

The Bears need to choose backups for running back Matt Forte. Jeremy Langford, a fourth-round pick, had 80 yards in the second preseason game. Three backs are competing for the third and possibly fourth spots: Jacquizz Rodgers, Ka'Deem Carey and Senorise Perry.

Cincinnati's offense was dreadful in a loss at Tampa Bay. Andy Dalton threw two interceptions, one returned for a touchdown. He finished 6 of 13 for 46 yards and was sacked three times. Running back Jeremy Hill also fumbled.

Dalton's first interception skipped through the hands of A.J. Green. He overthrew tight end Tyler Eifert on the second one. The starting offense managed 49 yards on 26 plays.

---

SEAHAWKS AT CHARGERS, 8 p.m.

Seattle quarterback Russell Wilson is likely to see his most extensive time of the exhibition season and looks to get the Seahawks' first-team offense into the end zone for the first time. They have one offensive touchdown in two weeks, that coming in the fourth quarter against Denver.

Wilson and the majority of Seattle's starters will play the entire first half and into the third quarter, coach Pete Carroll said.

''These guys need to play. They need the play time. They got to get ready,'' Carroll said. ''You can't hide from it, it's coming. It's right around the corner, and they need to be fit and mentally right to play four quarters of football two weeks from now, so we got to take this next step.''

Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers and rookie running back Melvin Gordon are expected to return. Rivers sat out last Saturday's victory at Arizona in a move coach Mike McCoy said had been planned since spring. Gordon sat out as a precaution after spraining his right ankle.

McCoy won't say how long the first-team offense is expected to stay in.

Also expected to miss the game is inside linebacker Manti Te'o (shoulder).

---

STEELERS AT BILLS, 4 p.m.

The Bills are still searching for a starting quarterback, with EJ Manuel getting his opportunity to reclaim his former job in the midst of a three-way competition. The Steelers suddenly have a competition for the backup job behind Ben Roethlisberger, with newly signed Michael Vick in the mix after Bruce Gradkowski sustained a season-ending injury to his left hand.

Manuel will start, though journeyman Matt Cassel and former Ravens backup Tyrod Taylor will also take snaps with the first-stringers - or at least those who are healthy. For the second consecutive week, Buffalo will be minus its top three receivers: Sammy Watkins (gluteal muscle/hamstring), Robert Woods (tightness) and Percy Harvin (hip). Running back Fred Jackson is set to return after missing three weeks (hamstring). However, newly acquired starter LeSean McCoy (hamstring) will miss his second straight game and is not expected to be ready until the season opener.

Steelers coach Mike Tomlin said there's a chance Vick could see limited playing time, giving the veteran a chance to compete against former coach Rex Ryan. Vick is competing for the backup job with Landry Jones, who has thrown three touchdowns and two interceptions. A bigger issue for Pittsburgh is at center, where newly signed Doug Legursky will compete with Cody Wallace to fill in for center Maurkice Pouncey, out indefinitely (left ankle).

---

BROWNS AT BUCCANEERS, 7 p.m.

The Buccaneers are happy with the progress of No. 1 overall draft pick Jameis Winston, but emphasize he's still a rookie and there's much to be learned the rest of the preseason. There's no temptation to rest the young quarterback, who limped off the field after being wrestled to the ground on a sack Monday night.

Coach Lovie Smith will be looking for better protection from a revamped offensive line featuring two projected rookie starters. They've worked with Winston on avoiding big hits, learning when and how to slide when he runs the ball. The 2013 Heisman Trophy winner has yet to throw a touchdown pass, but finished long drives with TD runs in each of the first two games.

Center Evan Smith is back after sitting out the last game (groin), and the Bucs will look at potential replacements for right tackle Demar Dotson (left knee sprain). WR Mike Evans will sit out the final two preseason games (sore left hamstring).

The Browns are finally closer to full speed after a rash of injuries during training camp and the preseason. Quarterback Josh McCown, expected to start the season opener, returns to Tampa Bay, where he went 1-10 as a starter last season. WRs Dwayne Bowe (hamstring) and rookie running back Duke Johnson (hamstring) will be on the field for the first time in preseason.

Cleveland has major plans for Johnson, a third-round pick from Miami. Also, the Browns will get their first look in a game at receiver Terrelle Pryor, the former quarterback attempting to switch positions at 26. Pryor has been slowed by a hamstring issue.

Browns QB Johnny Manziel will not play (sore right elbow).

---

REDSKINS AT RAVENS, 7:30 p.m.

Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III won't have the opportunity to bounce back from a stressful showing last week.

Griffin has been ruled out of the matchup against Baltimore because of a concussion, the result of a blow he received in the second quarter against Detroit.

In a statement released Friday by the Redskins, NFL independent neurologist Robert Kurtzke is quoted that Griffin ''should be held from game play this weekend and be retested in one (to) two weeks.''

Earlier in the week, the Redskins said Griffin had been cleared to play.

Griffin was sacked three times and fumbled twice before he was smothered by Lions defensive end Corey Wootton while chasing a loose ball. Griffin went 2 for 5 for 8 yards on four possessions before leaving.

Ravens quarterback Joe Flacco, meanwhile, is looking to turn things around after throwing two interceptions last week in a 40-17 loss at Philadelphia.

''You don't want any doubt to be able to creep into anybody's mind,'' Flacco said. ''You want all of the coaches and all of the players to have 100 percent confidence that we're going to go in there and light it up.''

Although the two teams both play their home games in Maryland, Flacco believes the Ravens need to excel for reasons that have nothing to do with this tepid rivalry.

''We want to go out there and play the best we can just so we feel that extra energy going into the first week (of the regular season),'' Flacco said.

---

VIKINGS AT COWBOYS, 7 p.m.

Adrian Peterson won't play, and Dez Bryant will. Those are the two biggest names for the game that will include most starters. Peterson will be in Texas after a turbulent year for the star running back triggered by child abuse charges in his home state. Bryant has yet to play in the exhibition season.

That's the norm for Peterson, skipping the entire preseason for the fourth straight year even though he missed all but one game last year after allegations he had badly injured his 4-year-old son with a wooden switch he said was used for disciplinary purposes. He pleaded guilty to a reduced charge to avoid jail time. Peterson admitted he'd like to play for the Cowboys when his agent was suggesting Peterson wanted a new football home.

Dallas quarterback Tony Romo has played three snaps this preseason and will finally have the All-Pro receiver in Bryant (hamstring) for what figures to be their only preseason game together. It should also be the first game for Pro Bowl left tackle Tyron Smith (right arm muscle strain), and the first action since late in 2013 for linebacker Sean Lee, who missed last year with a knee injury.

Vikings quarterback Teddy Bridgewater is 22 of 28 for 219 yards with one touchdown and no interceptions in three preseason games. Minnesota coach Mike Zimmer is 7-0 in the preseason, while Dallas' Jason Garrett has lost seven straight exhibitions.

---

COLTS AT RAMS, 8 p.m.

Both teams are 0-2 in the preseason, breaking in new offensive linemen and had defensive issues last week. The difference: Indianapolis has dropped seven preseason games in a row, but was the AFC runner-up last year; the Rams were 6-10 and haven't fielded a winner since 2003.

Colts coach Chuck Pagano counted more than a dozen missed tackles in a 23-11 loss to the Bears. Rams coach Jeff Fisher said his team's defensive miscues have been more a matter of gap responsibility.

The new right side of Indy's offensive line, tackle Jack Mewhart and guard Todd Herremans, has appeared out of sync at times. Center remains up for grabs between Khaled Holmes and Jonotthan Harrison.

Andrew Luck had a rough go last week, getting sacked on the first pass play and then pressured into a throwaway on the next.

The Rams' starting offense has been a dud, held to a field goal in six possessions, but gets wide receiver Brian Quick (shoulder) for the first time. Two rookie starters on the right side of the line, Rob Havenstein and Jamon Brown, will likely get extra snaps.

---

FALCONS AT DOLPHINS, 7 p.m.

The Dolphins' top two left tackles are out, with Branden Albert not fully recovered from reconstructive knee surgery, and backup Jason Fox sidelined by a concussion. But coach Joe Philbin said quarterback Ryan Tannehill will play despite any uncertainty about protection on his blind side.

Dallas Thomas, trying to win a starting job at guard, is the most likely candidate to fill in at left tackle.

Miami's first-team offense and defense both looked good in the first two exhibition games, and the target for them Saturday is 35 snaps, Philbin said. That means the most extensive playing time yet for the starters, including the team's most prominent newcomer, $114 million defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh.

The Falcons' top running backs, Devonta Freeman and Tevin Coleman, have missed the first two preseason games with hamstring injuries. They practiced this week, but coach Dan Quinn said Thursday he still isn't sure they will play. He said Coleman, the rookie third-round pick, is ahead of Freeman in his recovery.

Wide receiver Roddy White (minor elbow surgery), and safety William Moore (calf), won't play. Defensive tackle Ra'Shede Hagemen has been cleared after going through the concussion protocol.

Some starters may play into the third quarter. It would not be a surprise if quarterback Matt Ryan, who has been sharp in the first two games, and wide receiver Julio Jones are pulled before the second half.

---

JETS AT GIANTS, 7 p.m.

While the game will interest fans, the important one between the teams will be played on Dec. 6.

Both teams are looking for offense.

Eli Manning and Giants starters have scored a field goal in seven possessions. Odell Beckham Jr. has yet to catch a pass and Victor Cruz remains sidelined (calf).

Defensively, the Giants showed improvement in their second game under Steve Spagnuolo. The line, still waiting for the injured Jason Pierre-Paul, generated a pass rush against Jacksonville. Jameel McClain will start at middle linebacker for the injured Jon Beason (knee). Highly regarded rookie safety Landon Collins is expected to play after spraining a knee two weeks ago.

Jets coach Todd Bowles expects the starters to play at least the first half. Quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick led the offense to a touchdown in the starters' final drive in a win over Atlanta.

Fitzpatrick is starting his third straight game, taking over after Geno Smith was sidelined six to 10 weeks when his jaw was broken by a punch from then-teammate Ikemefuna Enemkpali on Aug. 11. Smith returned to the practice field this week, mostly as a spectator. He is likely to miss at least the first four regular-season games.

Defensive end Muhammad Wilkerson appears set to make his preseason debut after missing nearly three weeks (hamstring). First-round pick Leonard Williams has been starting in DL Sheldon Richardson's place while Richardson works with the backups after being suspended the first four games of the season for violating the NFL's policy on substance abuse. Richardson could face an even longer suspension after being charged with resisting arrest in Missouri on July 14 following a high-speed race. Williams had 1 1/2 sacks against the Falcons.

Friday's Sports In Brief

August 29, 2015

BASEBALL

LOS ANGELES (AP) Vin Scully will be back for a record 67th season in the broadcast booth for the Dodgers, who revealed the news in the second inning of their game against the Chicago Cubs.

Magic Johnson, a co-owner of the team, appeared on the Dodger Stadium video board to tell the crowd that Jimmy Kimmel had a major announcement. Late-night TV host Kimmel appeared and without a sound used cue cards to explain Scully would return for another season - ''at least,'' read one of the cards.

His last card read: ''God bless us everyone.''

The 87-year-old Scully stood up and waved from his booth as the crowd cheered. The Hall of Fame announcer's consecutive years of service make him the longest-tenured broadcaster with one team in sports history.

SEATTLE (AP) - The Seattle Mariners fired general manager Jack Zduriencik after seven disappointing seasons during which the club failed to end its playoff drought.

Team President Kevin Mather announced the decision to fire Zduriencik, with assistant general manager Jeff Kingston taking over on an interim basis. Kingston joined the Mariners front office in 2009 after spending seven years as the director of baseball operations with San Diego.

Mather said he would like to find an experienced GM and have one in place soon after the regular season concludes so as to not lose out on the upcoming offseason.

NFL

ASHBURN, Va. (AP) - Washington Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III will miss Saturday's exhibition game at Baltimore because of a concussion, reversing an earlier decision to let him play.

In a statement released Friday by the Redskins, NFL independent neurologist Robert Kurtzke is quoted that Griffin ''should be held from game play this weekend and be retested in one (to) two weeks before a firm conclusion to return to game play can be made.''

Griffin left last week's exhibition game against Detroit with what Redskins coach Jay Gruden said afterward was a concussion. The Redskins announced Thursday that Griffin had been cleared to play this weekend.

GOLF

EDISON, N.J. (AP) - Jordan Spieth lost out on a chance to play the weekend at The Barclays. He also lost his No. 1 ranking.

Bubba Watson made a birdie on the 18th hole at Plainfield Country Club for a 2-under 68 and a one-shot lead going into the weekend at the opening FedEx Cup playoff event.

Trying to rally to make the cut, Spieth hit into a hazard on the 12th hole, and a bogey later became a double bogey when he was penalized one shot for stepping on his ball during the search. He had a 73, the first time since the Tour Championship last year that he had consecutive rounds over par. He missed the cut by five shots. That means Rory McIlroy, who isn't playing this week, returns to No. 1.

Watson is in good shape through 36 holes to claim his own No. 1 ranking - a victory would move him to the top of the FedEx Cup. Watson was at 7-under 133.

British Open champion Zach Johnson (65) was tied for second with Henrik Stenson (66), Tony Finau (69) and Jason Dufner (68).

PRATTVILLE, Ala. (AP) - Yani Tseng closed with an eagle and a birdie for an 8-under 64 and a one-stroke lead in the Yokohama Tire LPGA Classic.

Tseng hit a 6-iron to 4 feet to set up the eagle on the par-5 eighth hole just before play was delayed for about 90 minutes because of lightning and rain, then took the outright lead on the par-4 ninth with her sixth birdie of the day.

Tseng reached 10-under 134 on the links-style Senator Course with her lowest round since a 63 in the 2013 LPGA Thailand.

Austin Ernst was second after a 65, and playing partner Lexi Thompson, the 2011 winner at age 16, was third at 8 under after a 67. Sydnee Michaels and Julieta Granada were still on the course at 7 under when play was suspended for the day because of more rain and darkness. Michaels had four holes left, and Granada two.

ENDICOTT, N.Y. (AP) - Paul Goydos and Gene Sauers shared the first-round lead at 6-under 66 in the Champions Tour's Dick's Sporting Goods Open.

Goydos had a bogey-free round at En-Joie. He won the Allianz Championship in February in Florida for his second victory on the 50-and-over tour. Sauers had seven birdies and a bogey.

John Huston, the 2011, winner was a stroke back along with Ian Woosnam.

Defending champion Bernhard Langer had a 71.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (AP) - A week before the start of the football season, a difficult summer for the University of Illinois became chaotic as coach Tim Beckman was fired after an investigation found he tried to influence medical decisions and pressure players to play with injuries.

Beckman's firing follows the unexpected resignations this month of the top two officials on campus, revelations that they'd used private emails accounts to avoid public scrutiny of school business, and a pair of lawsuits in which former women's basketball and women's soccer players claim they were mistreated by coaches.

And the rocky times may not be over: The investigation that led athletic director Mike Thomas - a defendant named in those lawsuits - to fire Beckman continues.

AUTO RACING

NEW YORK (AP) - NASCAR star Tony Stewart said he didn't see a driver walking on a dirt track in upstate New York last year before he struck and killed him, and noted the racer was impaired by marijuana and shouldn't have been outside his car, according to court papers filed Friday.

Kevin Ward Jr.'s family filed a lawsuit this month that accused Stewart of gross negligence, saying he gunned his engine and put his card into a skid as the 20-year-old Ward walked on the track after a crash at Canandaigua Motorsports Park on Aug. 9, 2014.

Stewart's attorney, Brian Gwitt, argued in an answer to the Wards' lawsuit that the racing star didn't see the crash Ward had been involved in and didn't realize anyone was standing on the track.

HOCKEY

Al Arbour, the bespectacled gentleman of a coach who molded a young and talented New York Islanders franchise into an NHL dynasty that won four straight Stanley Cups in the early 1980s, has died. He was 82.

The Islanders confirmed Arbour's death in a release issued Friday afternoon. Arbour had been in declining health, battling Parkinson's disease and dementia, and living in a long-term care facility in Florida.

Beginning in 1973-74, Arbour led the Isles to 15 playoff appearances and won 119 playoff games - an NHL record with one team - over 19 seasons. His 740 career regular-season wins with the Islanders are the most with one NHL team.
