Game of the day: Alouettes at Stampeders
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Montreal Alouettes at Calgary Stampeders (-5, 47.5)

The defending Grey Cup champion Calgary Stampeders begin life without star running back Jon Cornish as they try to avenge a Week 2 loss to Montreal when they host the Alouettes on Saturday. Cornish, the CFL's Most Outstanding Player in 2013, was placed on the six-game injury list with a broken thumb suffered in a 29-26 loss in Ottawa on July 24, leaving Calgary with a running back-by-committee situation.

Montreal's 29-11 victory over the Stampeders on July 3 served as a coming out party for rookie quarterback Rakeem Cato, who was 20-of-25 for 241 yards and three touchdowns in his first career start and has completed 72.2 percent of his passes while winning two of his three contests. Michael Sam, who became the first openly gay player drafted by an NFL team when the St. Louis Rams selected the defensive lineman in 2014 before releasing him, could make his Alouettes debut after signing a two-year contract prior to the season. "We would like to see (Sam) play, help us on special teams," Alouettes coach Tom Higgins told reporters. "We would like to see and get the answer everyone is looking for - can he play? There's only one way to answer that question, and that's to put him on the field. ..." Calgary is 3-0 at home this season - winning by a combined seven points - and has won five straight meetings with Montreal at McMahon Stadium by an average of 18.4 points.

TV: 7 p.m. ET, TSN, RDS, ESPN3

LINE HISTORY: The Stamps were initially -4.5 before shifting to -5. The total has dropped from 48 to 47.5.

INJURY REPORT: Alouettes - DL Markell Carter (Ques-Undisclosed), WR Kyle Graves (Ques-Undisclosed), S James Tuck (Ques-Undisclosed) Stampeders - WR Joe West (Ques-Leg)

ABOUT THE ALOUETTES (2-2 SU, 3-1 ATS, 0-4 O/U): Cato isn't doing it alone as Montreal's offence also is highlighted by the league's receiving leader and No. 2 rusher. Slotback S.J. Green has recorded a CFL-best 341 yards on 20 receptions and a touchdown while running back Tyrell Sutton has registered 280 yards - second to Saskatchewan's Jerome Messam - and three TDs. The Alouettes also boast a pair of top performers on defence in linebacker Chip Cox, who has a league-high 27 tackles, and defensive end John Bowman, who shared the CFL lead with Edmonton's Marcus Howard in sacks with four prior to the Eskimos' game Friday against the Roughriders.

ABOUT THE STAMPEDERS (3-2 SU, 0-5 ATS, 1-4 O/U): Calgary's ground attack is expected to be handled by Matt Walter, top kick returner Tim Brown and Tory Harrison, who was elevated from the practice squad. Walter and Brown have combined for 45 yards on 12 carries this season as Cornish accounted for 325 of Calgary's 417 rushing yards. Bo Levi Mitchell was 23-of-41 for 318 yards and a touchdown against Ottawa and has completed 66 percent of his passes with three TDs and four interceptions in 2015.

TRENDS:

*Alouettes are 0-5 ATS in their last 5 meetings in Calgary.
*Stampeders are 0-6 ATS in their last 6 games overall.
*Under is 12-2 in Alouettes last 14 road games.
*Under is 4-0 in Stampeders last 4 home games.

CONSENSUS: As of this writing, 53 percent of users were backing the Stamps.

Armadillo: Saturday's six-pack

Top six and worst six NFL teams in turnover conversion last year.......

6) Buffalo-Detroit-SF, +7
5) Arizona, +8
4) Seattle, +9
T2) Houston, +12
T2) New England, +12
1) Green Bay +14

T26) Tampa Bay-Philly, -8
28) Tennessee -10
29) New Jersey Jets -11
30) Washington -12
31) New Orleans -13
32) Oakland -15

**********

Armadillo: Saturday's List of 13: Random stuff with weekend here......

13) Pirates 5, Reds 4-- Starling Marte had the best defensive 9th inning I've ever seen an outfielder have. He threw out the tying run at the plate after a single to left, then ended the game with a tremendous diving catch as the Pirates won again. High drama!!!

12) Mets 2, Nationals 1 (12)-- Two nights ago, Wilmer Flores was crying at his SS position, thinking he had been traded to Milwaukee, but that trade never happened and 48 hours later, Flores was BMOC, hittg a walk-off homer in the 12th inning as the Mets beat the first-place Natonals. Had to be happy for the guy.

11) Mets added Yoenis Cespedes for the last two months of the season; he solidifies LF for them and will add a potent bat to a important lineup.

10) Cespedes is now on his fourth team in 367 days, in part because no one seems to want to sign him long-term and they don't get a draft pick if he stays and then leaves as a free agent. If no one wants him, please, please send him back to Oakland.

9) Friday was a "blue moon", that unusual occasion when we have two full moons in the same month. Happens every 30 months or so; next one is in 2018.

8) Russell Wilson signs with the Seahawks for four years, $87.6M, roughly $60M of it guaranteed. Good job by the Seahawks getting that distraction out of the way.

7) Padres' pitcher Ian Kennedy was scratchd from his start Friday night so he could go home for the birth of his fourth child, but weather in Miami was stormy, so the flight was cancelled and Kennedy made his scheduled start after all.

6) How is Harold Reynolds on TV? He seems likeable enough, but he says some stuff that makes you scratch your head.

3:15 Friday, San Diego pitchers are playing frisbee in the outfield in Miami, four hours before gametime. Reynolds comments, "Why is it so dark there?" Um, maybe because the roof of the stadium is closed?!?!?!? He talks before he thinks way too much.

5) Five teams who were under .500 on July 30 have made the playoffs, last one being the '06 Dodgers. AL Wild Card is soft right now; it could happen this year.

4) Toronto went all-in to win the division in part because 13 of their last 56 games are against the first place Bronx Bombers.

3) Golden State Warriors saved $8M by trading Gerald Wallace to Philly for Rider alum Jason Thompson.

2) As odd as Harold Reynolds often appears to be on TV, former Colorado GM Dan O'Dowd is very good, letting us know how GMs think and how things often shake out as far as trades go. MLB Network was way ahead of ESPN as far as trade deadline coverage, not even close.

1) There have been more 90-degree days in Seattle this year than in Chicago.

Go figure.

Twins have been producing Overs at a high rate

The Over has paid out in six out of the last seven times the Minnesota Twins have taken the field.

Minny hosts the Seattle Mariners Saturday with Kyle Gibson and Mike Montgomery scheduled to get the ball for the M's and Twins, respectively.

The Twinkies are presently -129 favorites on the moneyline at Pinnacle Sports.

----------------------------

Offense missing as the Athletics keep losing

The Oakland Athletics have dropped seven of their past eight, thanks largely to their anemic offense. The A's have been averaging a mere 2.5 runs per game during that span.

Not surprisingly, the under has been hot in those contests too with the game ending under the closing total on six occasions.

The A's are +104 with the total set at 7.5 when they host the Cleveland Indians Saturday.

------------------------------------------

Offense and overs dictating White Sox recent games

The Chicago White Sox have gotten accustomed to slugfests with the over cashing in each of their past five games. The Sox are averaging 7.2 runs per game while allowing 7.0 runs during their past five.

A combined average score of 14.2 rpg is easily topping the average closing total of 8.3.

The White Sox host the New York Yankees with a current total of 9.

-------------------------------------

Giants are cashing away from home behind Heston

Giants backers have been enjoying seeing Chris Heston pitch away from home, as the squad is 6-1 in the righty's prior seven starts away from AT&T Park.

Heston is the probable starter Saturday in Texas versus newly-acquired Cole Hamels and the Rangers.

San Fran is presently in the +132 ballpark at sportsbooks.

-------------------------------

Lynn on fire for Cards bettors as of late

The St. Louis Cardinals are 8-2 in Lance Lynn's last 10 outings, a trend that will appeal to Cards backers ahead of his start Saturday against the Colorado Rockies.

The Rox are scheduled to send southpaw Jorge De La Rosa to the bump.

As of this writing, the Cardinals were -177 moneyline favorites with a total of seven.

MLB roundup: Zobrist hits two HRs, Royals beat Jays

Aug 01, 2015

TORONTO -- Ben Zobrist, obtained in a trade this week, hit two home runs, and Yordano Ventura pitched seven innings as the Kansas City Royals came back to defeat the Toronto Blue Jays 7-6 on Saturday.

Ventura (6-7) allowed six hits and five runs in seven innings as the right-hander earned his second straight victory to allow the Royals to snap a three-game losing streak. Right-hander Greg Holland pitched the ninth for his 23rd save of the season despite allowing a walk and a single.

Eric Hosmer drove in three runs for the Royals and extended his hitting streak to 14 games as the Blue Jays had their three-game winning streak end. Jose Bautista hit two home runs for the Blue Jays and Josh Donaldson hit one.

Blue Jays left-hander Mark Buehrle allowed five hits, no walks and four runs (three earned) and did not factor in the decision. Right-hander Mark Lowe (0-2) allowed four hits and three runs in the eighth inning to take the loss in his Blue Jays' debut.

Red Sox 11, Rays 7

BOSTON -- Travis Shaw slugged the first two home runs of his major league career and had three RBIs as Boston overcame another shaky start from Joe Kelly.

Shaw's first home run was a third-inning solo shot to right field and his second was a three-run blast in the eighth, putting the game out of reach as the Red Sox won their second straight. Shaw finished with a career-high four hits, was a triple short of the cycle and scored five runs.

Kelly (3-6) gave up only one hit through three innings, but the right-hander departed after giving up five runs on nine hits and striking out six in five-plus innings.

Mariners unable to fix Montgomery's recent mistakes

Mike Montgomery has been struggling as of late, which has led the Seattle Mariners to lose their past four with the leftie starting.

In Montgomery's past four starts he has only pitched 20.1 innings while allowing 16 earned runs.

The M's are currently +116 when they visit the Minnesota Twins Saturday.
