Monday's Tip Sheet
December 12, 2016

The road teams fared well on Sunday in the NBA, posting a 4-1 straight-up and 3-1 record against the spread. The 76ers pulled off the biggest upset by knocking off the Pistons as 12-point road underdogs, 97-79 to pick up their second straight away victory following a 23-game road skid. The Warriors bounced back from Saturday’s blowout loss at Memphis by beating Minnesota last night, 116-108, but failed to cash as 10-point favorites.

Game of the Night – Blazers at Clippers (-9 ½, 217) – 10:35 PM EST

Portland knocked Los Angeles out of the opening round of the playoffs last season, as both Chris Paul and Blake Griffin suffered injuries to leave the Clippers depleted. The Clippers rebounded in the first two matchups with the Clippers this season by winning each time, including a 111-80 blowout at Staples Center on November 9 to cash as 11-point favorites. However, the Blazers played with no rest that night, as they have put together an 0-5 SU/ATS record on the second of back-to-backs this season.

The Blazers (12-13 SU, 9-16 ATS) will be playing with one day of rest tonight after blowing a 20-point lead in a 118-111 setback at Indiana on Saturday. The offense dried up in the fourth quarter as Indiana outscored Portland, 28-13, even though the dynamic backcourt of Damian Lillard and C.J. McCollum combined for 67 points. Portland plays the final contest of a five-game road swing tonight after losing the last three games, including defeats at Milwaukee and Memphis.

The Clippers (17-7 SU, 13-11 ATS) ended a brief two-game skid by blasting the Pelicans on Saturday night, 133-105 as 14 ½-point favorites. Griffin rested for Los Angeles in that blowout, as the Clippers scored at least 35 points in three of four quarters. The Clippers knocked down 17 three-pointers and shot a scorching 57% from the floor, while Paul put up the rare 20-point, 20-assist performance.

Quick Turnaround

The only team playing with no rest tonight is the Lakers (10-16 SU, 11-14-1 ATS), coming off a 118-112 home setback to the Knicks on Sunday. Los Angeles has dropped six consecutive games as the Lakers make the short trip north to Sacramento. The Lakers own a 2-3 SU/ATS mark with no rest, while allowing at least 116 points three times on the second of a back-to-back.

The Kings (8-15 SU, 12-10-1 ATS) have dropped two in a row, while looking to avenge a 101-91 home setback to the Lakers last month. In that loss, Sacramento jumped out to a 14-point lead after one quarter, but the Lakers outscored the Kings in the final quarter, 31-18 to grab the win and cover as 5 ½-point underdogs.

Finding its Pace

Indiana (12-12 SU, 10-14 ATS) suffered through plenty of injuries through the first month of the season, but is finally returning to health. The Pacers erased a 20-point deficit in Saturday’s home victory over the Blazers, as Indiana looks to improve on a 2-9 record this season off a win. Indiana welcomes in Charlotte (14-10 SU, 12-11-1 ATS) tonight as the Hornets are coming off a 116-105 setback at Cleveland on Saturday to fall to 6-4 on the road.

In the last meeting between these teams in Charlotte in November, the Hornets couldn’t miss early by posting 43 first quarter points in a 122-100 victory over the Pacers as three-point favorites. Charlotte has owned Indiana recently by capturing each of the past four matchups, including a pair of underdog victories at Bankers Life Fieldhouse last season.

Runaway Raptors

Toronto (16-7 SU, 16-6-1 ATS) is finding its groove right now by winning eight of its last nine games to extend its advantage in the Atlantic division over New York to 2 ½ games. The Raptors knocked off the Celtics on Friday, 101-94 as Kyle Lowry and DeMar DeRozan combined for 58 points. Toronto hosts Milwaukee (11-11 SU, 10-12 ATS) tonight at Air Canada Center looking to improve on a 9-4 record as three of its home losses have come to Cleveland and Golden State.

Taking Flight

Another team that is heating up is Houston (17-7 SU, 17-17 ATS), who is riding a six-game winning streak, as the Rockets host the struggling Nets (6-16 SU, 11-10-1 ATS) tonight. The Rockets held off the Thunder on Friday, 102-99, followed up by a 109-87 blowout of cross-state rival Dallas on Saturday.

Houston owns a perfect 3-0 SU/ATS record as a double-digit favorite, as the Rockets are 14 ½-point favorites against a Nets’ squad that is coming off a 29-point loss at San Antonio on Saturday. One warning for Rockets’ backers, as Brooklyn pulled off the two-game sweep of Houston last season, including a 106-98 triumph as 11 ½-point ‘dogs at Toyota Center.

Other Action

The Heat (7-17 SU, 11-13 ATS)
return home from an 0-3 road swing as the Wizards (9-13 SU, 9-13 ATS) travel to South Florida. Miami managed a pair of covers as heavy underdogs at Atlanta and Chicago, as the Heat look to improve on a 2-8 record at American Airlines Arena. The Wizards are coming off comeback home victories over the Nuggets and Bucks, but Washington lost to Miami at the Verizon Center last month, 114-111 as 4 ½-point favorites.

Denver (9-15 SU, 13-11 ATS) and Dallas (5-18 SU, 9-14 ATS) are hooking up for the first time this season as the two teams meet at American Airlines Center. The Mavs grabbed three of four matchups last season, including both games in Dallas. The Nuggets finish off a six-game road swing after rallying past the Magic on Saturday, while the Mavs are fresh off their 18th loss of the season at Houston.

Tuesday’s six-pack

— Dodgers signed 3B Justin Turner, closer Kenley Jansen to big contracts.

— College football coaching changes: Charlie Strong to USF, Luke Fickell to Cincinnati, Lane Kiffin to Florida Atlantic.

— Kiffin takes close to a 50% pay cut to become a head coach again.

— QB Jarrett Stidham transfers from Baylor to Auburn, a good get for Gus Malzahn.

— Dexter Fowler will be the first St Louis Cardinal to wear #25 since Mark McGwire.

— LIU 74, St John’s 73— Really bad loss for Chris Mullin; they also lost to Delaware State.

Tuesday’s List of 13: Nobody asked me, but…….

13) First of all, the Rams are much better off NOW than they were when Jeff Fisher was hired as Rams’ coach in 2012. Much closer to being a winning team now but they’re still a losing team and in the NFL, that means you lose your job and that happened Monday. Special teams coach John Fassel will be the interim coach for the last three games.

Awkwardness: Rams’ COO Kevin Demoff is the son of agent Marvin Demoff, who is Fisher’s agent. Should make Christmas dinner only slightly uncomfortable in the Demoff home.

12) If you made me guess who the Rams go after to be their next coach, I’d say Jon Gruden. If you let me choose, I’d say this: a) a combination of Mike/Kyle Shanahan or b) Stanford coach David Shaw, with Norv Turner as OC

No matter what, it needs to be someone with an offensive background, since they traded six draft picks to get QB Jared Goff.

11) Sunday was a rough day in the NFC West: all four teams lost, while turning ball over 15 teams and the 49ers didn’t have any turnovers. That is 15 turnovers for three teams. Oy.

10) Semi-good news for the Dolphins; it is a sprained ACL/MCL for Ryan Tannehill, not a torn ACL. Doubtful he plays again this year, but it makes next season’s prospects way better.

9) Arizona WR Michael Floyd got a DUI; when you’re on a underachieving 5-7-1 team and you’re about to be a free agent and then this happens, then Floyd is about to lose his job.

8) So you want to be a college coach? One of Western Michigan’s basketball players was charged with murder Monday in the shooting of a fellow student.

First of all, our condolences to the family of the victim. Very, very sad.

Second, the WMU coaches are now on the hot seat. Western has made the NCAAs once in 13 years (2014) under this coach; they’re 3-6 this year and now this happens. People who had nothing to do with this crime are going to pay for it.

7) One of the trophies Arnold Palmer won at the Masters sold at an auction this week for $444,012. Wow.

6) Lakers’ 6th man Lou Williams scored 137 points in a four-game stretch last week; since 1970, that is the most points scored in any four-game stretch by a non-starter.

5) People are frontrunners: Duke-UNLV game in Las Vegas Saturday had more blue than red in the stands. If Duke’s football team played in Las Vegas, how much blue is in the stands?

4) May have to research this next year, but it would be cumbersome; what is the %age of pass/run plays on 2nd and 10, after an incomplete pass on first down? I swear, NFL teams almost always run the ball in that spot, because 3rd-and-10 is seen as a spot where turnovers happen. The term “manageable third down” is mentioned way too much.

3) Eagles lost long snapper Jon Dorembos to a wrist injury; the young man has had a tough life. When he was 12, living a normal suburban life, his father murdered his mother and is still in prison. Dorembos is also a magician who appeared on America’s Got Talent.

2) Think about Lane Kiffin’s resume; he’s been a head coach at Tennessee, USC and with the Raiders in the NFL; now he takes around a 50% pay cut to be HC at Florida Atlantic. Guess he didn’t like being an offensive coordinator, even at $1.6M a year.

1) Happy birthday to my late Uncle Roy, who would’ve turned 100 years old on Monday. He passed away when I was 7, during an operation that now would be routine bypass surgery, but in 1967. it was a new thing. I remember his laugh, a great, booming laugh. A good man.

MIAMI (AP) Goran Dragic scored a season-high 34 points, Hassan Whiteside had 17 points and 16 rebounds and the Miami Heat beat the Washington Wizards 112-101 on Monday night to snap a five-game slide.

Dragic scored 13 points in the fourth for the Heat, who opened a six-game homestand. James Johnson scored 14 off the bench for Miami, which won for only the third time in 11 games at home.

John Wall scored 30 points and Bradley Beal added 29 for Washington, which is 0-2 against Miami this season.

Dragic made 14 of 23 shots, on his way to his best scoring night in a Heat uniform.

RAPTORS 122, BUCKS 100

TORONTO (AP) - DeMar DeRozan scored 30 points, Terrence Ross added 25 and Toronto beat Milwaukee for the sixth straight time.

Jonas Valanciunas had 13 rebounds and 11 points for his team-leading seventh double-double of the season as the Raptors won for the 12th time in the last 13 meetings with the Bucks.

Giannis Antetokounmpo had a team-high 30 points and Jabari Parker chipped in with 27 as Milwaukee lost its third straight.

DeRozan's free throw put the Raptors ahead for good with 2:52 left in the first quarter and they extended the lead to 26 in the second quarter.

The Bucks pulled within eight in the final minute of the third, but that was as close as they got.

PACERS 110, HORNETS 94

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - Paul George and Myles Turner scored 22 points each to lead Indiana past Charlotte.

Jeff Teague had 16 points, 11 assists and five rebounds, and Rodney Stuckey added 14 points for the Pacers, who have won two straight since returning home from a five-game road trip.

Marco Belinelli scored 14 points for the Hornets, Marvin Williams and Nicolas Batum each had 13 and Kemba Walker added 12.

C.J. Miles made the go ahead 3-pointer with 5.6 seconds remaining in the third quarter to start an 11-1 run by the Pacers. It gave Indiana a 76-73 lead and Stuckey's two free throws with 8:56 to play put the Pacers ahead 84-74.

Inside the Paint - Tuesday
December 13, 2016

Tuesday’s pro basketball action has six games on tap and after watching the home teams go 7-0 on Monday, bettors could be looking to press the momentum or find the value in the visitor tonight.

Favorites went 4-3 straight up and 2-5 against the spread as Indiana, Miami and Dallas all notched victories as short home underdogs. The Rockets (-13 ½) and Clippers (-10) both improved to 18-7 but neither covered heavy digits in their tight wins against the Nets and Trail Blazers respectively.

The ‘over’ went 5-2 last night and is now 14-7 (67%) in the last three days.

ESPN offers up a nationally televised double-header on Tuesday and they begin with an intriguing battle between Minnesota (6-18 SU, 7-17 ATS) and Chicago (13-10 SU, 13-10 ATS) from the United Center.

Former Bulls coach Tom Thibodeau, who went 255-139 in five seasons with Chicago, will face his former team for the first time as an NBA coach since the Bulls fired him in May 2015.

Oddsmakers respect Tibs a lot and they believed he could turn around a Minnesota team quickly, even posting the club’s win total at an eye opening 41 victories. The Wolves are 12 games below .500 and they just don’t have the horses or experience to close out games in the fourth quarter.

Case in point on Sunday when Golden State outscored Minnesota 38-20 in the final 12 minutes to grab a 116-108 victory at the Target Center. Including that setback, the team has dropped four straight and eight of 10.

The Wolves managed to earn the cover (+10 ½) against the Warriors and that was the first time this season that the point-spread mattered in any of their games. Put simply, they usually get run as underdogs or win outright.

Oddsmakers have installed the Bulls as seven-point home favorites and they’ve posted a solid 7-3 SU and 6-4 ATS mark at the United Center this season. Chicago has looked very impressive at home in wins over Boston, Cleveland and San Antonio.

Minnesota did get the best of Chicago last season, capturing both meetings and that includes a 102-93 win at the United Center as a 9 ½-point underdog.

For what it’s worth, the Bulls have gone 4-5 versus the Western Conference this season and that includes a 1-2 mark at home, with the lone home win coming last Thursday versus San Antonio.

Minnesota has gone 3-7 both SU and ATS versus the Eastern Conference but two of those wins did occur on the road. The Wolves have seen the ‘over’ go 7-3 in these matchups. The total on this game is hovering between 208 and 209 at most shops.

Let’s take a quick look at the other five games on tap.

Memphis at Cleveland: The Grizzlies (+15 ½) are playing three straight games against the two teams from last year’s NBA Finals and they started that run off with a dominating 110-89 win over Golden State on Saturday. Including that win, Memphis has won six straight and it’s doing so without two of their best players in Mike Conley and Chandler Parsons. The Grizzlies stunned the Cavaliers 106-103 last season as 15-point road underdogs. Prior to that victory, Memphis had lost its three previous encounters to Cleveland by an average of 22 PPG. The Cavs have gone 3-1 (2-2 ATS) versus the West this season while the ‘over’ has gone 3-1. Memphis is 6-4 versus the East. Cleveland has gone 7-0 SU as a double-digit home favorite this season but only managed to produce a 3-4 ATS mark. The Grizzlies appear to be waving the white flag after announcing center Marc Gasol will be rested.

Orlando at Atlanta: No early line was posted on this game due to the status of Orlando’s big men Nikola Vucevic (back) and Bismack Biyombo (shoulder). Atlanta opened as a 6 ½-point favorite and has jumped up to seven. The Hawks have won two straight since dropping seven in a row and come into this game rested, not having played since Friday. Orlando enters this matchup on a three-game losing skid but it’s been better on the road (6-7 SU, 7-6 ATS) than at home. These teams split four games last season with each club securing a win on the road. The total went 2-2.

Golden State at New Orleans: This will be the third meeting of the season between the pair, second time in New Orleans. Golden State won the first two matches but failed to cover the number as a double-digit favorite in each contest. The ‘over’ cashed in both games and is on a 4-0 run in this series, with Golden State averaging 124.3 PPG during this span. The Warriors have gone 6-2 SU and 2-6 ATS as double-digit road favorites this season and they’ll likely be in that role (-11) again tonight. Total bettors should note that Golden State has seen the ‘under’ go 7-1 in these spots with Tuesday’s number sitting at 225.

New York at Phoenix: The Knicks are starting to identify themselves as a playoff team and they’re doing so by beating marginal clubs. New York has won two straight and six of its last seven and that includes four consecutive wins on the road. The Knicks are favored (-3) in this spot and they’ve gone 8-3 both SU and ATS versus the Western Conference this season but tread lightly with that record since they haven’t faced the big guns and the three losses came to quality opponents (Rockets, Thunder, Jazz). Phoenix isn’t a great defensive team (113.3 PPG) and that production has helped the ‘over’ go 17-7. The Knicks swept both games against the Suns last season, which included a 128-107 victory in the desert as short road underdogs. That game went ‘over’ but the previous five between the pair saw the ‘under’ connect. You could play the look-ahead spot here with New York traveling to Golden State on Thursday but I believe this Knicks team knows what they are and these games against weaker foes are much more important.

Oklahoma City at Portland: The home team has won six straight in this series and covered five of those games. The ‘over’ has gone 4-2 during this span and Portland has shot very well (116.7 PPG) in its last three home tilts versus Oklahoma City. However, this could be the worst scheduling spot for any team in the league this season. Portland just played five straight road (1-4 SU, 2-3 ATS), which includes a tough decision (121-120) at the Clippers last night. The Blazers now have to get up for the run ‘n gun Thunder and then they head back out on the road Thursday for another three games. To Portland’s credit, all of the four recent away losses were decided by single digits but recent form tells you to fade them tonight. Last season, the Trail Blazers went 6-13 when facing back-to-back spots and they’ve carried that struggle over to this year’s campaign. Portland has gone 0-5 both SU and ATS when playing on no rest this season, but to be fair, all of those setbacks occurred on the road. No overnight line was posted due to the status of OKC shooting guard Victor Oladipo (wrist) but the line has settled at a pick 'em.
