Road teams cash tickets with ease Wednesday night

Road teams did a great job for cashing tickets for bettors on Wednesday night, going 8-2 against the spread.

Road favorites went 3-0 ATS, while road underdogs went 5-2 ATS. Road favorites have been the best bet in this season cashing over 56 percent of the time.

Kings' C DeMarcus Cousins, probable Thursday

Cousins has been out with viral meningitis but will likely return Thursday against the Bucks.

Inside the Paint - Thursday

December 18, 2014

As of this past Monday, oddsmakers at Sportsbook.ag had Oklahoma City listed as a 5/1 betting choice (Bet $100 to win $500) to win the Western Conference Finals this season, behind San Antonio (5/2) and Golden State (3/1).

The odds seem fair because everybody knows you shouldn’t dismiss the Spurs ever and the Warriors have been playing great basketball. However, I expect OKC to take over the top choice by January, if not sooner.

The Thunder are finally healthy and the two-headed monster of Russell Westbrook and Kevin Durant look unstoppable. OKC has won seven straight games and are 7-1 since Durant returned to the lineup. The Thunder have gone 5-3 against the spread during this run, which includes five straight covers.

On Tuesday, the Thunder ran past the short-handed Kings 104-92 as eight-point road favorites and OKC head coach Scott Brooks didn’t show any mercy after the victory. "This is an I-don't-feel-sorry-for-you league," Thunder coach Scott Brooks said. "When we had guys hurt, I didn't get a lot of text messages, 'Hey, hang in there,' from the other 29 coaches in the league."

I don’t want to read into Brooks’ comments, but they are refreshing and perhaps he realizes that the window is closing in OKC, which creates a good sense of urgency.

Tuesday’s win pushed Oklahoma City to 12-13 SU and 15-10 ATS.

The Thunder have gone 5-8 both SU and ATS on the road but that includes a 1-7 record without the league’s Most Valuable Player (Durant).

On Thursday, OKC will face a much stiffer road test when it meets Golden State (21-3 SU, 16-8 ATS) from Oracle Arena. Under first-year head coach Steve Kerr, the Warriors have turned heads this season and own the best record in the NBA.

Golden State had its franchise best 16-game winning streak snapped on Tuesday when it lost at Memphis 105-98 as three-point road underdogs. This game was all but over in the 2nd quarter as the Grizzlies opened with a 20-0 run behind a barrage of 3-pointers from Vince Carter.

During their winning streak, the Warriors helped bettors with an 11-5 record versus the number.

These teams met on Nov. 23 in Oklahoma City and Golden State earned a 91-86 win as an eight-point road favorite. Westbrook and Durant sat out for the Thunder in the loss.

Tight games have become a common theme in this series. Last season, Oklahoma City took two of three during the regular season and Golden State’s lone win (116-115) came on a buzzer beater from Andre Iguodala at home. The two wins by OKC at home came by a combined seven points.

Oddsmakers opened Golden State as a 3 ½-point favorite for Thursday’s matchup.

At home this season, the Warriors have gone 8-1 SU and 6-3 ATS. The one loss came on Nov. 11 to San Antonio (113-100) and coincidentally that setback came after Golden State lost on the road at Phoenix (95-107). Déjà vu a month later?

The total for this game opened at 209 and bettors should be aware that both Golden State (15-9) and Oklahoma City (19-6) have been great ‘under’ leans this season.

Tip-off for this game is slated for 10:35 p.m. ET with TNT providing national coverage.

There are three other games slated for Thursday and none of them had overnight numbers posted due to key injuries, which could have you shying away.

Here’s my quick handicap.

New York (5-22 SU, 10-17 ATS) at Chicago (15-9 SU, 11-13 ATS)

I wouldn’t invest any money on New York right now but it has been somewhat respectable versus the number (6-7 ATS) on the road. What’s impressive about Chicago is that it’s played better on the road (11-4 SU, 8-7 ATS) than at home (4-5 SU, 3-6 ATS). The ‘over’ could be a good look considering the home-away tendencies for both teams. Chicago has seen the ‘over’ go 7-2 at the United Center while New York is 9-4 to the ‘over’ on the road. The Bulls hammered the Knicks 104-80 on opening night as 4 ½-point road favorites and most bettors saw the total (184) push. This game will lead the TNT double-header with an 8:05 p.m. ET start. The Bulls opened as 11-point home favorites with a total of 192.

New Orleans (12-12 SU, 13-11 ATS) at Houston (19-5 SU, 14-10 ATS)

Kevin McHale has done a great job with this Rockets team and he should be mentioned in Coach of the Year talks. The Rockets are coming off a 115-111 overtime win at the Nuggets last night as three-point road favorites. Houston has been a solid bet at home (9-3 SU, 7-5 ATS) this season while New Orleans has struggled on the road (4-9 SU, 6-7 ATS). Delving into those road numbers further, you notice that the Pelicans did beat the Spurs in early November but the other three wins came against inferior opponents (Kings, Jazz, Lakers), which tells you that they struggle when stepping up in class. For those of you expecting fatigue for Houston, be careful. The Rockets are 5-1 both SU and ATS when playing on zero days rest this season. Houston won three of the four encounters between the pair last season but New Orleans posted a 3-0-1 ATS mark. The Rockets have been installed as five-point home favorites.

Milwaukee (13-13 SU, 18-8 ATS) at Sacramento (11-14 SU, 13-11 ATS)

Sacramento center DeMarcus Cousins (illness) is expected to return tonight after missing 10 games. The Kings went 2-8 SU and 3-7 ATS during his absence and they also fired head coach Mike Malone. Prior to Cousins going down, the Kings were a respectable 9-6 SU and 10-5 ATS. Last season, Sacramento routed Milwaukee twice (116-102, 124-107) but this is a different Bucks squad. Losing rookie Jabari Parker (knee) for the season doesn’t help Milwaukee, who has been the top ATS team in the Association this season. Sacramento opened as a five-point home favorite with a total of 203.

TNT Trend

As mentioned in last week’s Inside the Paint installment, the ‘under’ was on an 11-1 run in nationally televised games aired on TNT.

Last Thursday, we saw a rare ‘over’ ticket but those following the Rockets-Kings outcome are well aware that overtime helped them immensely.

The Spurs dropped a 117-116 triple-overtime decision to Memphis on Wednesday and now play their third game in a stretch of 11 straight against teams with non-losing records. Portland, winners of three straight, is in the midst of a tough stretch of its own, going 5-2 so far during a stretch of playing nine of 11 games on the road.

With Tony Parker (hamstring) and Kawhi Leonard (hand) unlikely to play against Portland due to injuries, the Spurs will be a tired bunch, as four players played more than 40 minutes against Memphis, including 48 by Tim Duncan. “I don’t think I’ve ever played three overtimes,” Danny Green told the San Antonio Express-News. "It’s going to take a while for us to recover from this, but we’ve bounced back from tougher situations.” San Antonio will also need to find an answer for Damian Lillard, who is averaging 25.9 points in eight career games versus San Antonio and torched the Spurs on Monday for 23 points, 10 rebounds and six assists in a 108-95 victory.

LINE HISTORY: As of 8 AM EST, the line is currently off the board with injuries surrounding both teams

INJURY REPORT: Trail Blazers - F Nicolas Batum (Ques-Undisclosed) Spurs - F Kawhi Leonard (Ques-Hand), G Manu Ginobili (Ques-Back)

ABOUT THE TRAIL BLAZERS (20-6 SU, 14-11-1 ATS, 10-16 O/U): Beginning with this game, Portland starts a four-game road trip in five days that concludes Tuesday at Oklahoma City. Thomas Robinson, who replaced injured center Robin Lopez (9.6 points, 7.2 rebounds), who is out six weeks with a fractured hand, had 15 points and 16 rebounds in his first career start as the Trail Blazers topped Milwaukee, 104-97 on Wednesday. LaMarcus Aldridge has three consecutive double-doubles and 14 for the season - fifth most in the NBA - and the 6-11 forward has added a 3-pointer to his arsenal, connecting on 14-of–27.

ABOUT THE SPURS (17-9 SU, 12-14 ATS, 13-13 O/U): Green drained a season-high seven 3-pointers in 13 attempts in 52 minutes against Memphis and was limping noticeably late in the game. Duncan had 23 points and 10 rebounds but missed 10-of-15 free throws and played more than 40 minutes for the second time in a week after playing 40 minutes once all of last season. It doesn't get any easier after this one, as San Antonio goes to Dallas before returning home to play the Clippers and Oklahoma City.

TRENDS:

*Trail Blazers are 3-7-1 ATS in their last 11 games overall.
*Home team is 6-1 ATS in the last 7 meetings.
*Over is 7-1 in Spurs last 8 overall.
*Under is 5-0 in Trail Blazers last 5 after scoring 100 points or more in their previous game.

Armadillo: Sunday's six-pack

Six most popular picks in the Westgate Hotel handicapping contest, where some of the best handicappers in America put up $1,500 apiece, pick 5 games a week:

T6) Rams -4.5/Ravens -5.5-- Houston's starting QB was on Rams' practice squad six days ago; Ravens need the win.

5) Cardinals +8-- Arizona is undefeated at home.

4) Broncos, -3-- Cincinnati has struggled in primetime games.

3) Panthers +1.5-- Manziel making first NFL road start.

2) Vikings, +6.5-- Minnesota seems to play a close game every week.

1) Lions -6.5-- Clausen has a 1-9 record as an NFL starter.

Season record of six most popular picks each week: 51-29-1

2013 season record of six most popular picks each week: 42-57-4

**********

Armadillo: Sunday's List of 13: Wrapping up a sports Saturday........

13) Kentucky 83, UCLA 44-- Wildcats led 24-0; it was 41-7 at the half. This is same team that trailed Columbia and Buffalo at halftime. Kentucky has played much better against the bigger-name opponents.

12) Get well soon, Cincinnati coach Mick Cronin, who was found to have a problem with an unruptured aneurysm. He's a lucky man; those things can be fatal. There is no word when Cronin can resume coaching.

11) Villanova 82, Syracuse 77 OT--- Wildcats trailed by 15 in the first half, rallied to win a game Syracuse might need on Selection Sunday.

10) Big East/FOX Sports1 have a great idea, starting league play with five consecutive games on New Year's Eve; they did it last year too. Get to see the whole league in one day without switching the channel.

9) Texas Southern 71, Michigan State 64 OT-- Huh? Tigers are 2-8, losing by 40 at Gonzaga, 26 at Eastern Washington and Baylor. Terrible loss for the Spartans.

8) Gotham Classic was an odd twinbill at Madison Square Garden; first game was Pepperdine-Richmond, nightcap was West Virginia-NC State. They had a crowd of 8,088 in the supposed "....Mecca of college basketball". They draw 10,000+ for the play-in games in Dayton. New York City is more of an NBA city.

7) Gas is $1.99 a gallon in San Antonio; it is $2.89 here in upstate New York; we must be getting much higher quality gasoline, huh? Nah, probably not.

6) Former Texas football coach Mack Brown is very good on TV; listened to him on the New Orleans Bowl Saturday. Former coaches generally make better analysts.

5) Big day for some mid or low-majors Saturday: check out these upsets:
-- Texas Southern 71, Michigan State 64 OT
-- SC-Upstate 53, Mississippi State 51
-- St Francis 73, Rutgers 68
-- South Carolina State 71, Houston 63
-- Lehigh 84, Arizona State 81, 3OT
-- South Dakota State 68, Utah State 65 OT

4) I missed the whole nine-year Stephen Colbert run; supposedly he is a funny guy who takes his talents to CBS now. Colbert was once an understudy for Steve Carell at Second City Chicago- he is the youngest of 11 children, two of whom died in a plane crash with their father. Lot of comics have sadness inside them.

3) Roger Goodell announced there won't be an NFL team in Los Angeles next year, so that soap opera will continue next season. Supposedly for a new stadium to get built, two teams have to move, so they'll share the new stadium like Jets/Giants do in the New Jersey swamp.

2) Redskins 27, Eagles 24-- Philly ran 30 more plays, gained 190 more yards, but had 13 penalties, while Washington had three. Sanchez has turned the ball over 13 times in seven games-- you cannot win that way. Eagles aren't dead yet, but they're close.

1) Chargers 38, 49ers 35 OT-- Niners ran for 355 yards, led 28-7 at the half but lost with Rivers throwing ball for 356 yards. Gutty performance by the Chargers to stay alive in the playoff hunt. 49ers have fallen apart, losing last four games.

Armadillo: Tuesday's six-pack

Six of the more intriguing games on the Week 17 NFL card

-- Panthers @ Falcons-- Winner gets to playoffs with sub-.500 record.

-- Lions @ Packers-- Detroit's last win at Lambeau was in 1991.

-- Bengals @ Steelers-- Winner takes AFC North title; both are in playoffs.

-- Chargers @ Chiefs-- San Diego gets into playoffs with a win; KC needs a win and some help to get in.

-- Bills @ Patriots-- NE is #1 seed in AFC; will Brady/Gronkowski play?

-- Rams @ Seahawks-- Seattle wins NFC West if they avenge an earlier loss.

**********

Armadillo: Tuesday's List of 13: Random stuff on a rainy day......

13) Bengals 37, Broncos 28-- Cincy is in playoffs after this rainy win, which also clinched #1 seed in AFC for New England. Peyton Manning looked old in this game.

12) Temple 77, Kansas 52-- Huh? Owls lost to UNLV, St Joe's two mediocre teams, but they spanked the young Jayhawks here.

11) Providence 76, Miami 62-- Hurricanes had been unbeaten but have now lost three of their last four games. Good win for the Big East here.

Oklahoma had a 39-0 run in its win over Weber State, which apparently is down this year. Weber is usually one of the better teams in the Big Sky Conference.

10) Oregon 82, UCSB 78 OT-- For what I pay for DirecTV, they should carry the damn Pac-12 Network. Ducks are 9-3. Gauchos are a little disappointing.

9) Gardner-Webb 89, Purdue 84-- Runnin' Bulldogs from Boiling Springs, NC have wins over Clemson, Purdue, also have a loss to #340 Jacksonville- they're 8th-worst free throw shooting team in America, at 58.3%. .

8) Loyola Marymount has kids from six different countries on its basketball team this year. It is unfair to compare current LMU teams to the Kimble/Gathers team from the late 80's that made the Elite 8-- those two went to USC originally and transferred to Loyola after a coaching change with the Trojans.

7) Memphis 55, BYU 48 OT-- First Miami Beach Bowl had a thrilling end followed by a vicious brawl; do these nitwits realize the games are televised, so everything they do is on film? If you see the replay, check out #61 on Memphis, who looks around at the fisticuffs, quickly puts his helmet on and adjusts the chinstrap. Smart man.

Jake Elliott is the Memphis kicker; he drilled a 54-yarder in OT to keep Memphis alive; ball hit the net, might have been good from 64 yards. Clutch kick.

6) Colorado State replaced Jim McElwain with former Georgia QB Mike Bobo, who was most recently the Dawgs' OC. Hard for a Mountain West school to keep a good coach; if he wins big, the megabucks schools start calling and the mid-major has to go head-hunting all over again. .

5) Detroit Pistons cut Josh Smith, despite still owing him $26M for the rest of his contract. You know a coach has clout when he convinces management to eat $26M.

4) NFL suspended Lions' OL Dominic Raiola for stomping on another opponent this week; Detroit has to be relieved he didn't get suspended for two games, second of which would've been a playoff game. Last time the Lions won in Green Bay, the QB for Green Bay was Mike Tomczak and I still had most of my hair.

3) NFL teams who won field position by 10+ yards are 84-4 this season.

2) Seattle Seahawks won their last five games by a combined score of 114-33, but I do not think they're winning this Super Bowl. Its been nine years since the defending Super Bowl champ even won one playoff game.

1) Think about Russell Wilson being a 3rd round draft pick, just like Joe Montana was; Tom Brady was a 6th-round pick, Kurt Warner wasn't even drafted, while Ryan Leaf was the #2 pick in the whole draft. Scouting is an inexact science, for sure.

LeBron set for Christmas game at Miami

December 24, 2014

MIAMI (AP) - LeBron James doesn't have any apprehension for this homecoming.

There's nothing to fear, no real worries about his safety, unlike what awaited him the last time he had one of these return games. Then again, this might not even classify as a homecoming - because, it turns out, Miami was never truly his home, just a place he called home for four years while playing with the Heat.

He came. He won. He left.

On Thursday, James returns to face the Heat, the team that turned him from a superstar to a two-time NBA champion superstar. And as he and the Cleveland Cavaliers prepare for what will certainly be an emotional Christmas visit, James said he's expecting to be flooded with positive vibes.

''To say I haven't thought about going back, I would be lying,'' James said in Cleveland on Tuesday night after he and the Cavaliers beat Minnesota. ''It's going to be great to be back in that building around those unbelievable fans and the memories will definitely come back, being a part of the organization for four years.''

For their part, the Heat insist that they're looking forward to the reunion.

It goes without saying that some in the organization were angry when James left this past summer, in large part because of how long it took him to tell Miami that he would not be returning. But the building has hardly been scrubbed of reminders: Heat coach Erik Spoelstra still has photos of James in his office, and huge prints of some of his most memorable moments still adorn the walls of ''Championship Alley'' - the hallway leading from the Miami locker room.

James remains in contact with some Heat players, and his close friendship with Dwyane Wade continues.

''It hasn't changed,'' Wade said. ''It won't change. ... We have a great friendship and great respect for each other. It won't change.''

The homecoming drama was so different four years ago.

When James returned to Cleveland on Dec. 2, 2010, for the first time after signing as a free agent with Miami, the city that adopted the Akron native as one of its own turned on him. He was booed incessantly by Cavs fans who felt that he had betrayed them despite seven great seasons.

The Heat won that night. And they knew they would never face an atmosphere that daunting again.

''It was just us,'' James said.

James has spent the past few days downplaying his return to South Florida, but the four-time MVP has found himself reminiscing about what he accomplished alongside Wade, Udonis Haslem, Chris Bosh, Mario Chalmers and those former Heat teammates who remain in Miami.

They became a family, and for James, family is everything.

''I'm one person who understands being home, being able to stay home and making sacrifices to be home,'' said Haslem, a Miami native who has spent his entire NBA career there despite the chance to make more elsewhere. ''I've done it my whole career and I can't fault him for that. We had a great four years together, we had a lot of success together and we'll continue to be friends.''

Like James, Haslem is downplaying the Heat vs. James story line. After all, they've already played once - at Brazil, in the preseason.

''It ain't about Bron,'' Haslem said. ''It ain't about beating Cleveland because he left to go to Cleveland. It's about the Miami Heat against the Cleveland Cavaliers, and we'd want to win that game whether it was last year's Cleveland Cavaliers who won 25 games or whatever, or this year's Cleveland Cavaliers who everyone thinks are going to win it all.''

It's anyone's guess what crowd reaction awaits.

Some will boo. Some will cheer. Some will probably do both.

The Heat will honor James with a video tribute that's planned for one of the early timeouts, as they do with many returning players, and will have another for former Miami guard James Jones.

''I don't really get involved in what to expect,'' James said. ''My job is to go down there and win a basketball game and live in the moment.''

There was scorn when James left this past summer, of course. Some fans felt like James could have at least publicly thanked Heat fans who welcomed him in 2010, though it could also be argued that those fans getting to enjoy four consecutive trips to the NBA Finals were thanks enough.

But it was nothing like the venom that came from Cleveland when he left there in 2010, and that's why whatever scene awaits James when he takes the court for warmups around 4:40 p.m. on Thursday won't come remotely close to matching that avalanche of negativity when Miami visited the Cavaliers for the first time four years ago.

''It's a different blow when you lose the best player in the world,'' Haslem said. ''But life goes on. Basketball goes on.''

Cavaliers center Varejao out for season

December 24, 2014

CLEVELAND (AP) - A person familiar with the injury says Cavaliers starting center Anderson Varejao tore his Achilles tendon and will miss the rest of the season.

Varejao was injured in Wednesday night's win over Minnesota, and an MRI confirmed the tear, said the person who spoke Wednesday to the Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the team has not released information on the injury.

Varejao was positioning under the basket for a rebound in the third quarter when he crumpled to the floor in pain. He was assisted off the floor and left Quicken Loans Arena following the game on crutches with his leg in an immobilizing air cast.

With Varejao out, Tristan Thompson will likely move into a starting role and the Cavs will sharpen their pursuit of another big man.

Varejao, who signed a three-year, $30 million contract extension in October, averaged 9.8
