Tuesday's Tip Sheet

April 19, 2016

**Celtics at Hawks** (Atlanta leads 1-0)

-- Atlanta (49-34 straight up, 42-40-1 against the spread) took a 1-0 series lead over Boston by capturing a 102-101 victory in Saturday’s Game 1 at Philips Arena. However, the Hawks missed crucial free throws in the final minute and a late Isaiah Thomas 3-pointer secured a backdoor cover for the Celtics, who closed as five-point road underdogs. Mike Budenholzer’s team easily covered the number for first-quarter wagers (-1.5, -120) and first-half bets (-3).

-- Al Horford was the catalyst for the winners in Game 1, producing 24 points and 12 rebounds. I hit a pair of prop bets on Horford by taking the ‘over’ for his points (15) and rebounds (eight). I’m also off to a good start for a series prop bet for Horford’s points-per-game average to go ‘over’ 14.5 PPG.

-- Atlanta raced out to a lead as big as 19 in the first half, leading 51-34 at halftime. Jeff Teague finished with 23 points, 12 assists, four rebounds, one steal and only two turnovers. Kent Bazemore added 23 points, eight rebounds and two blocked shots, while Paul Millsap contributed 14 points, seven rebounds, three blocked shots and three assists without a turnover. Mike Scott also scored 14 points and pulled down five boards in 18-plus minutes of action from off the bench.

-- Atlanta’s off-the-bench trio of Dennis Schroder, Thabo Sefolosha and Tim Hardaway Jr. combined for only two points and went 0-for-11 from the field.

-- Thomas scored 27 points and dished out eight assists in the Game 1 defeat. Before pulling up lame with a hamstring injury, Avery Bradley scored 18 points for the C’s. Marcus Smart finished with 15 points, five rebounds, two assists and two steals, while Jae Crowder contributed 14 points, 10 boards and four assists.

-- Despite 66 combined points in the fourth quarter of Game 1, the ‘under’ (206) was a winner.

-- As of late Monday night, most betting shops had the Hawks listed as six-point favorites for Tuesday’s Game 2. The total was 205.5 points, while the Celtics were +210 on the money line (risk $100 to win $210). Atlanta was installed as a 3.5-point favorite with a total of 99 for first-half wagers.

-- Boston (48-35 SU, 43-39-1 ATS) will be without its second-leading scorer Bradley, who is ‘out’ for Game 2 after sustaining a significant hamstring strain in Game 1. Bradley, who averaged 15.2 points per game during the regular season, is ‘highly unlikely’ to return for the entire series, according to comments made by Brad Stevens on Sunday.

-- Boston reserve center Kelly Olynyk is listed as ‘questionable’ for Game 2 with a shoulder injury. The Gonzaga product, who averaged 10.0 points and 4.1 rebounds per game during the regular season, was limited to 11-plus minutes of playing time in Game 1. Olynyk had two points, one rebound and one assist.

-- Atlanta has won four in a row over Boston since the Celtics won the first of four regular-season meetings. The Hawks are 3-2 ATS in this year’s five encounters, while the ‘over’ is also 3-2.

-- Atlanta is 28-14 SU and 22-20 ATS at home this season. Meanwhile, Boston owns a 20-22 spread record on the road. The Celtics are 2-8 ATS in their last 10 games as road underdogs. They have won outright in just one of those 10 games, but we should note that the lone victory came at Golden St.

-- For the updated series price, 5Dimes has Atlanta as a -420 ‘chalk,’ while the Celtics are +335 to win the seven-game series (risk $100 to win $335).

-- The ‘under’ has cashed at a 5-1 clip in Atlanta’s last six games. In their last 18 home contests, the Hawks have watched the ‘under’ post a remarkable 14-4 record. They have seen the ‘under’ go 45-38 overall, 23-19 in their home games.

-- The ‘under’ is 44-39 overall for the Celtics, 23-19 in their road outings.

-- Tip-off is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. Eastern on TNT.

**Grizzlies at Spurs** (San Antonio leads 1-0)

-- San Antonio (68-15 SU, 45-38 ATS) cruised to a 106-74 win over a depleted Memphis team in Sunday’s series opener. Gregg Popovich’s club easily took the cash as an enormous 17-point favorite. The 180 combined points fell ‘under’ the 188.5-point total.

-- Kawhi Leonard led five Spurs in double figures with 20 points, four steals and three blocked shots in Game 1. LaMarcus Aldridge added 17 points and a pair of rejections, while Tony Parker and Patty Mills scored 15 points apiece. Parker dished out a team-high six assists. Tim Duncan played only 21-plus minutes, but he produced seven points, 11 rebounds and two blocked shots.

-- Memphis trailed by 11 at intermission of Game 1, but it was quickly put away in the third quarter when San Antonio enjoyed a 33-14 advantage to go into the final stanza ahead by 30. Vince Carter logged only 19 minutes of playing time, but he made 6-of-7 shots and scored a team-best 16 points. Lance Stephenson was the only other Grizzly in double figures with 14 points. Zach Randolph finished with only six points, five rebounds and three assists that matched his three turnovers. Randolph was an abysmal 3-of-13 from the field and didn’t get to the charity stripe.

-- As of late Monday night, most spots had San Antonio listed as an 18.5-point favorite for Tuesday’s Game 2 at home. The total was 187, while the Grizzlies had outrageous 25/1 odds to win outright at The Westgate SuperBook in Las Vegas. For first-half bets, the Spurs are favored by 12 with a total of 93.5.

-- Memphis is playing without stars Marc Gasol (foot) and Mike Conley (Achilles). Both franchise stalwarts are out with season-ending injuries along with Mario Chalmers, Brandan Wright and Jordan Adams. Gasol, a two-time All-Star who was a first-team All-NBA selection last season, was the Grizzlies’ leading scorer (16.6 PPG) through 52 games of the regular season. He was averaging 7.0 rebounds, 3.8 assists, 1.3 blocked shots and 1.0 steals per game. Conley was lost after 56 regular-season games in which he averaged 15.3 points and 6.1 assists per game.

-- San Antonio has lost at home just once in 42 games this year. The Spurs are 24-18 versus the number.

-- The Spurs have seen the ‘under’ cash in four consecutive games to improve to 46-35-2 overall and 22-19-1 in their home contests.

-- The ‘over’ is 45-36-2 overall for the Grizzlies, but they have seen the ‘under’ go 22-20 in their road assignments.

-- The updated series price at 5Dimes has San Antonio as a -37500 favorite. The Grizzlies own 125/1 odds to pull the first-round shocker.

-- TNT will have the broadcast at 9:35 p.m. Eastern.

Armadillo: Wednesday's six-pack

-- Hawks 89, Celtics 72-- Favorites are 9-4 vs spread in NBA playoffs.

-- Spurs 94, Memphis 68-- If this series was a fight, it would've been stopped.

-- Blues 4, Blackhawks 3-- Chicago is in trouble, down 3-1 in series.

-- Ducks 3, Predators 0-- Road team won all three series games.

-- Lightning 3, Red Wings 2-- Tampa Bay grabs 3-1 series lead.

-- Penguins 3, Rangers 1-- Road team won all four NHL games last night.

**********

Armadillo: Wednesday's List of 13: Mid-week musings.......

13) Chicago Cubs are off to an 11-3 start; their starting pitching lasted at least six innings n all 14 games, which is huge, takes the strain off the bullpen.

Cincinnati is 7-7, despite it starting pitcher lasting 6+ innings four times.

12) Since 2010, the low-budget Tampa Bay Rays are 60-53 against the Boston Red Sox, 59-52 against the Bronx Bombers, their big money rivals.

11) Jacob deGrom is having a good week; his newborn has come home from the hospital after a medical scare last week and then deGrom threw 71 pitches in a simulated game Monday, meaning he probably avoids a stint on the DL.

10) Oakland A's won their fifth one-run game of the season last night; last year, they won their fifth one-run game of the season on June 16.

9) Big 14 Conference hasn't had a QB taken in the first round of the NFL Draft since Kerry Collins in 1995.

8) Lookalikes: New York City mayor Bill DeBlasio and Bills' coach Rex Ryan.

7) Over last three years, Florida State has had 13 players taken in first two rounds of the NFL Draft; next highest is Alabama, with ten.

6) The original Rocky was on last night, a great movie; hard to believe it is 40 years old. Can still remember sitting in the theater watching it for the first time; The theater I watched it in is long gone, replaced by a car delearship.

5) NHL teams with a 3-0 lead in playoff series are 179-4 in those series, but two of the four losses have come since 2010.

4) '85-'86 Celtics are the only NBA team to win consecutive playoff games by 30+ points; Spurs came close last night, beating overmatched Memphis by 26 in Game 2.

3) Bernie Sanders went to the same high school in Brooklyn as Chris Rock and the great actor Martin Landau.

2) North Carolina had 99 basketball practices this season; they played 40 games and had 99 practices. Spurs have played 84 games (not counting preseason games) this season. Wonder how many practices (not counting game day walk-thru's) they've had?

1) Its about time Major League Baseball got off its butt and made a decision on the Jose Reyes situation; criminal charges in Hawai'i were dropped three weeks ago, the Rockies are already 8-6 and Reyes hasn't even had his spring training yet. Reyes is still being paid, so the Rockies can't be happy and Reyes isn't happy, since he can't play. Make a decision already!!!!

Wednesday, April 20

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Wednesday's NBA playoffs betting preview and odds
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

LeBron James had a very efficient Game 1 for the Cavs with game highs in minutes (40:51) and assists (11) and also added 22 points and six rebounds.

The opening round of the NBA Playoffs gets back to business Wednesday night with a trio of solid matchups. The Hornets, Pistons, and Trail Blazers will all be trying to avenge Game 1 defeats.

Charlotte Hornets at Miami Heat (-4.5, 199)

Heat lead series 1-0

The third-seeded Miami Heat versus the sixth-seeded Charlotte Hornets was supposed to be one of the tighter matchups of the first round of the NBA playoffs. The Heat breezed to a 32-point victory in Game 1 and will try to open up a 2-0 lead in the best-of-seven set with another easy win when they host the Hornets in Game 2 on Wednesday.

Miami’s clear advantage entering the series was experience, and Dwyane Wade, Luol Deng and Joe Johnson all have plenty of experience in the postseason, even if none of it came together. Deng looked comfortable with a season-high 31 points on 11-of-13 shooting in Game 1 to lead a 57.6 percent shooting effort from the Heat. “Whether you lose by 30 or one, it’s one-nothing,” Hornets coach Steve Clifford told reporters. “We lost one game. And up front, we just got manhandled. If Deng and (center Hassan) Whiteside are going to combine for those kinds of numbers, it’s going to be hard for us to win.” Charlotte was outrebounded 49-37 and outscored in the paint 56-36 but does not plan to move center Al Jefferson into the starting lineup.

TV: 7 p.m. ET, NBATV, FSN Southeast (Charlotte), FSN Sun (Miami)

LINE HISTORY: The line for this contest opened with the Heat pegged as five-point favorites and the public didn't trust that line, betting it down to -4.5. The total opened at 202.5 and took a drastic downward turn - settling in at 199.

ABOUT THE HORNETS (48-35, 42-40-1 ATS, 41-40-2 O/U): Kemba Walker was one of three players to score in double figures with 19 points on 6-of-13 shooting in the first game but lamented the team’s execution. "We made a lot of mistakes," Walker told reporters. "Coach gave us an awesome game plan and we just completely went against it. We didn’t do what he told us to do. That’s not really us. We’re usually the team that plays mistake-free. (Sunday), that wasn’t the case. They played extremely well as well, but we definitely made a lot of mistakes." Starting guards Walker, Courtney Lee and Nicolas Batum each managed only one assist in the loss.

ABOUT THE HEAT (49-34, 44-38-1 ATS, 35-47-1 O/U): Whiteside was playing in his first postseason game and had no trouble getting the better of Charlotte’s frontcourt with 21 points on 9-of-11 shooting, 11 rebounds and three blocks in 26 minutes. “We just knew it was time to play Miami Heat basketball,” Whiteside told reporters. “We’re in the playoffs. It’s all or nothing. Just leave it all out there. We came out and played our hearts out as a team. We’re just going to try to keep it rolling.” Whiteside finished third in the NBA Defensive Player of the Year voting revealed on Monday.

TRENDS:

* Hornets are 1-7 ATS in their last 8 Conference Quarterfinals games.
* Heat are 7-0 ATS in their last 7 home games.
* Over is 6-0 in Hornets last 6 vs. Eastern Conference.
* Under is 6-1 in Heat last 7 games following a straight up win.
* Over is 9-0 in the last 9 meetings in Miami.

Detroit Pistons at Cleveland Cavaliers (-10, 201)

Cavaliers lead series 1-0

The Detroit Pistons let an upset opportunity get away in the series opener and look to avoid a 0-2 hole when they visit the Cleveland Cavaliers in Wednesday's Game 2. Eighth-seeded Detroit held a seven-point lead with 11 minutes remaining in Game 1 before top-seeded Cleveland rallied and stymied the Pistons.

Detroit point guard Reggie Jackson personifies the club's swagger and he doesn't see the missed opportunity as a devastating blow. "We know this is Goliath. We welcome it. We like the challenge," Jackson told reporters after the 106-101 loss. "I think we played well, I don't think we played necessarily our best game. We'll figure it out. It's a 1-0 series. We for sure got another one on Wednesday - come back and be ready to come out swinging." The Cleveland trio of point guard Kyrie Irving (playoff career-best 31 points), power forward Kevin Love (28 points, 13 rebounds) and small forward LeBron James (22 points, 11 assists) were all in stellar form in the opener. "We have a number of guys on this team, veterans that prepared us for this moment," Love told reporters. "So kind of leading up to it, three or four weeks left in the season, we were approaching every game like we had to get into the flow of a playoff game and approach every game as a tough one for us."

TV: 8 p.m. ET, TNT, FSN Detroit, FSN Ohio (Cleveland)

LINE HISTORY: The Cavs opened at -10.5 and the line was quicly dropped to -10 after Detroit's gutsy performance in Game 1. The total opened at 201 and hasn't moved off that number.

ABOUT THE PISTONS (44-39, 43-38-2 ATS, 43-40 O/U): Backup rookie forward Stanley Johnson was a solid contributor in the opener with nine points and eight rebounds in 16 minutes and coach Stan Van Gundy expressed his regret that he didn't play Johnson over Tobias Harris (nine points in 40 minutes) down the stretch. The first-round draft pick from Arizona averaged 8.1 points and 4.2 rebounds in the regular season but has impressed his teammates with his tenacious approach. "Stanley Johnson is a complete dog. He doesn't fear no man," Jackson told reporters. "We all bleed, so there ain't no reason to worry anybody, and that's how he feels. He's going to come at you and attack you. It's a mindset that we all need to have, and it's one that we embrace with him on this team."

ABOUT THE CAVALIERS (58-25, 37-43-3 ATS, 42-41 O/U): Irving (five) and Love (four) combined for nine of Cleveland's 12 3-pointers in the opener and James was ecstatic to see both players come through after injuries ended their postseasons early last season. "For these two guys, they were just excited to get back to this moment," James told reporters. "These guys have been working hard - Kyrie on his knee, Kevin on his shoulder - just to get back to this moment. It was great to be out on the floor with them and for them to put together the performance that they did." Outside of the trio, there wasn't much offense from the rest of the Cavaliers, as the other six who played combined for just 25 points.

TRENDS:

* Pistons are 5-1 ATS in their last 6 vs. NBA Central.
* Cavaliers are 1-4 ATS in their last 5 vs. Eastern Conference.
* Under is 7-0 in Pistons last 7 games playing on 2 days rest.
* Over is 4-0 in Cavaliers last 4 vs. NBA Central.
* Pistons are 9-2 ATS in the last 11 meetings in Cleveland.

Portland Trail Blazers at Los Angeles Clippers (-8.5, 209)

Clippers lead series 1-0

The Los Angeles Clippers had no trouble with the Portland Trail Blazers in Game 1 and will try to take a 2-0 lead when they host Game 2 on Wednesday. The Clippers coasted to a 115-95 victory in the series opener behind 28 points and 11 assists from Chris Paul and a solid defensive effort against the Trail Blazers’ talented backcourt.

Paul had plenty of help from the rest of his teammates, including a strong game from Blake Griffin that made it look as if the former All-Star was all the way back from his quad and hand injuries. “I'm just going to go play and play as hard as I can and fill any void that we see as a team,” Griffin told reporters. “I'm not really worried about the whole, ‘Can he get back?’ or, ‘Will he be able to play at a high level?’ It's just about filling those gaps for our team and finding ways to help.” The Trail Blazers could use a solid performance from their frontcourt after starters Al-Farouq Aminu, Maurice Harkless and Mason Plumlee combined to go 7-of-25 from the field. The vaunted backcourt duo of Damian Lillard and C.J. McCollum wasn’t much better offensively and struggled trying to stop Chris Paul and J.J. Redick on the other end of the floor.

TV: 10:30 p.m. ET, TNT, KGW (Portland), Prime Ticket (Los Angeles)

LINE HISTORY: The Clippers opened as 8.5-point favorites and the total opened at 209 - neither number has moved at this point.

ABOUT THE TRAIL BLAZERS (44-39, 44-39 ATS, 44-39 O/U): Lillard managed 21 points on 7-of-17 shooting and eight assists in Game 1 but was no match for Paul in his first playoff game as the unquestioned leader of the team. "We knew that they would make runs, but you've got to answer back," Lillard told reporters. "You've got to get stops. You've got to score the ball." Lillard helped drag the team to the playoffs despite losing four veteran starters from a playoff team last season and needs more help from McCollum, who struggled to nine points on 3-of-11 shooting in Game 1.

ABOUT THE CLIPPERS (54-29, 41-39-3 ATS, 34-49 O/U): Integrating Griffin back into the rotation after an absence of over three months was a focus for the team in the final two weeks of the regular season, and he looked comfortable in Game 1. "He was great,” Los Angeles coach Doc Rivers told reporters of Griffin. “Assertive. I loved his energy. Yeah, I mean, like I said before the game, I've been surprised with him. His energy, his endurance. (Sunday), I thought was the first day that he had great timing as well, so that was good for us.” Griffin delivered 19 points, 12 rebounds and six assists in 32 minutes after playing only five games down the stretch in the regular season.

TRENDS:

* Trail Blazers are 8-1 ATS in their last 9 games following a straight up loss of more than 10 points.
* Clippers are 1-8 ATS in their last 9 games playing on 2 days rest.
* Over is 12-3 in Trail Blazers last 15 games vs. a team with a winning % above .600.
* Under is 22-5 in Clippers last 27 when their opponent allows 100 points or more in their previous game.
* Under is 4-0 in the last 4 meetings in Los Angeles.

CHARLOTTE HORNETS (48-35) at MIAMI HEAT (49-34)
Eastern Conference – Round 1
Tip-off: Wednesday, 7:05 p.m. ET
Sportsbook.ag Line: Miami -5.0, Total: 201.5

Dwyane Wade and the Heat will be looking to take a 2-0 series lead when the team hosts the Hornets in Game 2 on Wednesday.

Many people expected the Hornets to show up in Game 1, but that was far from the case. Miami dominated right from the opening tip, winning 123-91 as a 4.5-point home favorite. The Heat could not miss on Sunday, as they shot an impressive 57.6% from the floor. They also turned the ball over just six times in the victory.

Miami has now continued to dominate this Charlotte team at American Airlines Arena. The Heat are 8-1 SU and 5-4 ATS when facing the Hornets at home over the past three seasons and all nine of those contests have gone OVER the total.

One trend to keep an eye on for Hornets bettors is that the team is 18-8 ATS when revenging a road loss this season. The Heat, however, are 14-4 ATS in a home game where the total is greater than or equal to 200 on the year.

PG Kemba Walker (Knee) is a bit banged up coming into this game, but he will be on the court in Game 2. As for guys that won’t be available, SF Michael Kidd-Gilchrist (Shoulder) is out for the season for Charlotte and PF Chris Bosh (Blood Clot) and SG Tyler Johnson (Shoulder) are both out for the year for Miami.

The Hornets got destroyed in Game 1 in Miami and this team is going to need to move the ball a lot better on Wednesday. PG Kemba Walker (20.9 PPG, 5.2 APG, 4.4 RPG, 1.6 SPG in regular season) and SF Nicolas Batum (14.9 PPG, 6.1 RPG, 5.8 APG in regular season) combined to dish out just two assists in the opening game of this series.

These are two guys that combined to average 11.3 APG during the regular season and they’ll need to do a better job of finding their teammates the rest of the way. Walker is also going to need to be more aggressive as a scorer in Game 2. He was just not as involved in the offense as he usually is. He took only 13 shots, which is down from the 16.4 shots per game he averaged during the regular season.

The Hornets are going to have a lot of trouble winning if he doesn’t step it up on Wednesday. Charlotte is also going to need a lot more out of PF Marvin Williams (11.7 PPG, 6.4 RPG, 1.0 BPG in regular season) and C Al Jefferson (12.0 PPG, 6.4 RPG in regular season) moving forward.

Williams was horrible in Game 1, finishing the contest with just two points. He was relied on to stretch the floor all season and needs to knock down some shots on Wednesday. Jefferson, meanwhile, had a lot of trouble with Hassan Whiteside in Game 1. The Hornets need him to hold his own on Wednesday or it’ll be very tough to steal a road game.

The Heat put on an impressive Game 1 display and the guy that changed the game was PF Luol Deng (12.3 PPG, 6.0 RPG, 1.0 SPG in regular season). Deng was unconscious on Sunday, finishing the game with 31 points and seven rebounds in 33 minutes of action. His shooting numbers were off the charts as well, as Deng went 11-for-13 from the field and 4-for-6 from the outside. He was excellent on the defensive end, switching onto whomever he needed to and he has just really changed this team’s season with his play at the power forward spot.

C Hassan Whiteside (14.2 PPG, 11.8 RPG, 3.7 BPG in regular season) was also a game changer for the Heat in Game 1. He was far too big and athletic for any of the Hornets’ inside players and he ended up finishing with 21 points, 11 rebounds, three blocks and two steals in 26 minutes of action.

Whiteside knows how to finish around the rim and he also is an anchor defensively for Miami. If he can avoid foul trouble then his fingerprints will be all over the results of this series when it’s all over. In the backcourt, SG Dwyane Wade (19.0 PPG, 4.6 APG, 4.1 RPG, 1.1 SPG in regular season) will need to continue to take the ball to the basket.

Without Kidd-Gilchrist, the Hornets do not have anybody that can really guard him. He had 16 points on 8-for-16 shooting from the floor and should be able to score more moving forward.

PG Goran Dragic (14.1 PPG, 5.8 APG, 1.0 SPG in regular season) will, however, need to be better in Game 2. He had just nine points on 2-for-8 shooting from the field in Game 1 and he can’t expect his team to win when he plays like that. Kemba Walker is going to be better in the remainder of this series and that means that Dragic must raise his game as well.

PORTLAND TRAIL BLAZERS (44-39) at LOS ANGELES CLIPPERS (54-29)

Western Conference – Round 1
Tip-off: Wednesday, 10:35 p.m. ET
Sportsbook.ag Line: Los Angeles -8.5, Total: 209.0

The Clippers will be hoping to head into Portland with a 2-0 series lead by defeating the Blazers in Game 2 on Wednesday.

A lot of people felt that the Blazers had a chance of stealing this series from the Clippers, but they’ll need to find a way to win on the road. Portland did not, however, look ready to do that in Game 1.

The Blazers did not come to play on either end of the floor, shooting just 39.8% from the field and allowing the Clippers to shoot 53.8%. Portland was also outrebounded 57-50 on the game and will need to show more effort overall on Wednesday. The Blazers should be able to respond, though.

They were 7-0 ATS after a blowout loss by 20 points or more this season and they’re facing a Clippers team that is just 7-17 ATS after scoring 100 points or more in three straight games on the year. Los Angeles is, however, an impressive 8-1 ATS in home games after having won six or seven of its past eight games this season.

The only player listed on the injury report in this game is C Meyers Leonard (Shoulder), who is out for the season for the Blazers.

The Blazers did not look good in Game 1 and are going to need a more complete effort on Wednesday.

PG Damian Lillard (25.1 PPG, 6.8 APG, 4.0 RPG in regular season) was the only guy that really showed up for Portland. Lillard had 21 points, eight assists and a steal in 38 minutes of action on Sunday. He’ll still likely need to score even more on Wednesday if his team is going to win. Lillard will also need to do a better job of playing pick-and-roll defense. The Clippers picked the Blazers apart with that play and Portland can’t afford to let that happen again. The only way to prevent it is for Lillard to play better defense on Chris Paul.

SG C.J. McCollum (20.8 PPG, 4.3 APG, 1.2 SPG in regular season) is a guy that must step it up for Portland. McCollum was a fantastic scorer this season, but he had just nine points on 3-for-11 shooting in Game 1. He just could not buy a bucket and the Blazers need him to knock down some jumpers on Wednesday.

It’s also important that SF Al-Farouq Aminu (10.2 PPG, 6.1 RPG in regular season) plays well for the Blazers. Aminu is playing as a small-ball power forward in this series and his matchup with Blake Griffin is huge. Although Aminu had 10 points in Game 1, he was awful from the field. He shot just 3-for-12 from the floor and needs to be more efficient on Wednesday.

The Clippers cruised to a Game 1 victory and that’s because PG Chris Paul (19.5 PPG, 10.0 APG, 4.2 RPG, 2.1 SPG in regular season) played a fantastic game for Los Angeles. Paul finished the contest with 28 points, 11 assists, six rebounds and two steals in 33 minutes of action.

He could not be stopped off the bounce and he’ll need to continue to be aggressive moving forward. Paul also ran the offensive to perfection, though. He found PF Blake Griffin (21.4 PPG, 8.4 RPG, 4.9 APG in regular season) and C DeAndre Jordan (12.7 PPG, 13.8 RPG, 2.3 BPG in regular season) whenever they were able to get any space at all. He’ll certainly look inside often moving forward.

For Griffin, it was encouraging for the Clippers to see him playing well. He had struggled when he returned from a broken hand, but he did not look rusty on Sunday. Griffin is far stronger than Aminu, so it’d be wise for him to get in the post more often in this series. Jordan, meanwhile, finished everything around the basket and he swatted everything near it on the other end. He was on his game defensively and the Clippers need him to continue to be throughout the postseason.

Wednesday's Tip Sheet
April 20, 2016

Eastern Conference – Game 2 – Miami leads 1-0
Hornets at Heat (-4 ½, 199) – 7:05 PM EST – NBATV

Miami put together the best offensive performance not only in the opening weekend of the NBA playoffs, but also in franchise history in Game 1 against Charlotte. The Heat ripped the Hornets, 123-91 to easily cash as 4 ½-point favorites and grab an early 1-0 series advantage. The only question is if Miami can keep up that hot shooting going into Game 2.

In the series opener, Miami’s Luol Deng torched Charlotte by knocking down 11-of-13 shots from the floor for 31 points, leading four Heat starters in double-figures. The Heat shot a blistering 57.6% from the field, while dropping 41 points in the first quarter to improve to 5-0 in the last five playoff games against Charlotte. Since 2011, Miami owns an 11-2 record in Game 1 playoff contests at the American Airlines Arena, while compiling a 9-3 SU and 6-6 ATS mark in Game 2’s at home in this span.

The Charlotte franchise hasn’t won a playoff game since getting rebooted in 2004 by losing all nine postseason contests in this span. Steve Clifford’s team was limited to 43% shooting from the field, as Nicolas Batum led the Hornets with 24 points in the Game 1 loss. The Hornets extended their ‘over’ streak to six after eclipsing the Game 1 total of 199, while moving to 9-3 to the ‘over’ in the past 12 road contests.

VegasInsider.com editorial director and NBA expert Chris David provides his thoughts on Wednesday’s action, “While the Heat looked impressive in Game 1, especially offensively, my lean would be to the Hornets in Game 2 based on what we’ve seen from them off losses in the second-half of the season. Charlotte has gone 7-1 since the All-Star break after a loss while averaging 106.3 PPG and the lone setback only came by six points.”

Will Charlotte continue its ‘over’ run in Game 2? David feels that it will be another shootout in South Florida, “I’m a little surprised the opening total of 203 got steamed down to 199 so quickly and I don’t understand the logic behind that move. From what we’ve seen this season, Miami hasn’t shown many offensive letdowns after lighting up the scoreboard. They’ve busted 120-plus three times in the regular season and they averaged 109 PPG in the next game. Plus, the last nine meetings between this pair at American Airlines Arena have all gone ‘over’ the number.”

Eastern Conference – Game 2 – Cleveland leads 1-0
Pistons at Cavaliers (-10, 201) – 8:05 PM EST – TNT

Detroit gave Cleveland all it could handle in Sunday’s Game 1, even leading by two points heading into the fourth quarter as 11-point underdogs. However, the Cavaliers rallied to outscore the Pistons in the final 12 minutes, 30-23 to capture the opener, 106-101. Detroit managed the cover as double-digit ‘dogs, but the Pistons need to do more work to slow down Cleveland’s Big Three.

Point guard Kyrie Irving led the Cavaliers with 31 points in his first playoff game since breaking his kneecap in the opener of last summer’s NBA Finals. Kevin Love pumped in 28 points and 13 rebounds, while LeBron James scored 22 points and dished out 11 assists to improve Cleveland’s playoff home record against Eastern Conference foes to 7-1 SU since the start of last season’s postseason. However, the Cavaliers have covered only three times at Quicken Loans Arena against the East in this span, while dropping to 0-4 ATS in its past four playoff games overall.

The Pistons shot the ball well in spite of letting things slip away in Game 1, connecting on 50% of their shots from the floor and knocking down 15 three-pointers. The backcourt duo of Reggie Jackson and Kentavious Caldwell-Pope combined to score 38 points on 14-of-26 shooting, while Marcus Morris contributed 20 points in the defeat for Detroit. The Pistons are seeking their first playoff win since 2008, as each of their last five postseason defeats have come at the hands of the Cavaliers.

David believes things will turn around from a totals perspective in Game 2, “Even though Game 1 went ‘over’ in this series, I would come back with the ‘under’ in Game 2. I thought the game was going to be ugly and technically it was as Detroit only took 73 shots, but they happened to connect on 51 percent of them and that included 15 bombs from 3-point land. I expect both those numbers to drop on Wednesday and I think Detroit will do a better job on the glass, which should limit Cleveland’s attempts. The total is hovering in the same neighborhood and I don’t see the winner getting over the century mark on Wednesday.”

The Pistons are currently riding a 4-1 ATS run in the road underdog role, while owning a 1-2 ATS record as a double-digit underdog this season. The Cavaliers have cashed just eight times in 21 opportunities as a favorite of at least 10 points this season, while James has posted a 9-3 SU and 5-7 ATS record in his last 12 Game 2’s of the playoffs after winning the series opener.

Western Conference – Game 2 – Los Angeles leads 1-0
Blazers at Clippers (-8 ½, 209) – 10:35 PM EST – TNT

The Warriors and Spurs have cruised to 2-0 advantages in their Western Conference quarterfinal series, while the Thunder were tripped up by the Mavericks in Monday’s Game 2. The Clippers seem like the forgotten team of this upper-half in the West, but Los Angeles seeks a 2-0 series edge after pulling away from the Blazers in the series opener, 115-95 as 8 ½-point favorites.

Los Angeles connected on nearly 54% of its attempts from the floor on Sunday night, led by point guard Chris Paul’s 28 points. Six Clippers scored in double-figures, as Paul’s backcourt mate J.J. Redick shot an efficient 8-of-12 from the field for 17 points, while Blake Griffin and DeAndre Jordan combined to score 37 points and pull down 24 rebounds. The Clippers put together a solid performance in their first playoff game since last season’s second round meltdown against the Rockets, as Doc Rivers’ team snapped a six-game playoff ‘over’ streak at Staples Center with an ‘under’ in Game 1.

The lack of depth showed for Portland on Sunday as the dynamic duo of Damian Lillard and C.J. McCollum combined to score 30 points, which won’t cut it against Los Angeles. Granted, Lillard did his part by putting up 21 points, but McCollum came out struggling after a solid playoff debut against Memphis last season by scoring nine points on 3-of-11 shooting. The most impressive performance came from reserve guard Gerald Henderson, who contributed 16 points off the bench on 7-of-12 shooting.

David doesn’t see much changing in the result from Game 1 to Game 2 at Staples Center, “The 20-point win by the Clippers in Game 1 wasn’t surprising but seeing the Los Angeles starting backcourt outscore Portland’s two-headed monster, 45-30 opened up some eyes. If the Trail Blazers don’t win that battle, they have no chance at winning a game yet alone staying close to the spread either. Los Angeles has blown playoff games in the past but it’s hard to advise a lean to Portland, who went 3-10 as a visitor in the final six weeks of the season and all three wins were against non-playoff clubs. For our purposes, the Blazers only covered two of the 10 losses and that should could give you extra confidence in laying the points with the Clippers in Game 2.”

Western Conference – Game 3 – Series tied 1-1
Thunder (-8 ½, 196 ½) at Mavericks – 7:05 PM EST – TNT

Everything has gone pretty much to form so far in the NBA playoffs, except for Dallas shocking Oklahoma City as 14-point road underdogs in Monday’s Game 2 of their first round series. Following a 38-point blowout in the series opener, the beat-up Mavericks hung with the Thunder for the first three quarters of Game 2 before hanging on in the final seconds for an 85-84 upset to cash at 10/1 on the moneyline (Bet $100 to win $1000).

The grind-it-out style the Mavericks employed for the final eight games of the regular season that helped them clinch a playoff berth didn’t work too well in a 108-70 setback in the series opener. However, point guard Deron Williams gutted out a sports hernia injury to score 11 first quarter points in Game 2, while Raymond Felton put up a team-high 21 points and dished out 11 assists in Monday’s victory to even up the series.

The concern on the Oklahoma City side is the shooting struggles of Kevin Durant, who missed 26 of 33 attempted shots in Game 2, including several misses in the final minute to give the Thunder the lead. Russell Westbrook didn’t shoot well either (8-of-22), but still scored 19 points and had 14 assists, but the duo knocked down just 3-of-17 shots from three-point range. In spite of OKC converting 33% of its shots, the Thunder limited the Mavericks to 42% shooting, while Mavs’ guard Wesley Matthews missed all seven of his three-point attempts.

VegasInsider.com editorial director and NBA expert Chris David explains that backing OKC can be a concern, “I expected Oklahoma City to sweep this series and was wrong on that prediction but I don’t see the Thunder losing another game to the Mavericks. However, it’s hard for me to back the Thunder versus the number in Game 3 just based on their regular season numbers. While the club was 22-9 as a road favorite, they burned bettors with a 12-18-1 record against the spread. Total bettors should note that the ‘over’ has gone 20-11 in those games and OKC has only been held under 100 points twice in that span.”

The Thunder have still controlled this series in 2015-16, as Billy Donovan’s team has won five of six meetings with the Mavericks. OKC won both matchups at the American Airlines Center, as each game sailed ‘over’ the total. Dallas profited as a home underdog this season by compiling a 7-5 ATS mark in this role, including a cover against Oklahoma City in a 109-106 loss as six-point ‘dogs on January 22.

Can the Thunder rebound from the poor shooting performance in Game 2? David believes OKC will put up points tonight, “Game 3’s total opened 197 and has dropped to 196. The first two games in this series have easily gone ‘under’ the number and those totals ranged from 203 to 206. While Dallas has had trouble scoring, Oklahoma City has proven that it can get any shot it wants so far and more importantly, it’s been great off bad performances. The Thunder offense was held in the eighties three times in the regular season and they responded 114, 128 and 119 points. With that being said, I’m buying the Oklahoma City team total ‘over’ (102 ½) on Thursday.”

Eastern Conference – Game 3 – Series tied 1-1
Raptors (-1 ½, 193) at Pacers – 7:35 PM EST – NBATV

Toronto rebounded from a disappointing second half in its 10-point loss in Game 1 to even up its series with Indiana following a 98-87 victory in Game 2. The Raptors picked up the cover as eight-point home favorites, while its defense stepped up by limiting the Pacers to 21 points or less in three of four quarters. The big question heading into Game 3 with the venue shifting to Bankers Life Fieldhouse is whether or not the dynamic Raptors’ backcourt can get its scoring on track.

Coming off last season’s first round sweep at the hands of the Wizards, the Raptors were none too thrilled to drop the opener to the Pacers and continue their playoff struggles. DeMar DeRozan and Kyle Lowry combined to shoot 8-of-32 and score 25 points in the Game 1 defeat, while not performing much better in Game 2 by scoring 28 points on 9-of-27 shooting. Lowry helped his cause by getting to the foul line and making all 10 free throw attempts in Game 2, while DeRozan failed to attempt a single free throw. The advantage in the middle in this series clearly belongs to Toronto, as center Jonas Valancuinas has pulled down 34 rebounds through two games.

Paul George continues to carry this Indiana offense by averaging 30.5 points per game through the first two contests of this series. George put up 28 points in the Game 2 loss on Monday, but only one other Pacer reached double-figures as Monta Ellis scored 15 points on 6-of-12 shooting. Pacers’ center Ian Mahinmi failed to score a point on six shot attempts, while being listed as questionable with a back injury for Game 3.

The line has shortened up with the series headed to Indianapolis as David breaks down Game 3, “Even though this line is short, it’s rare to see the Pacers as home underdogs but the oddsmakers have been spot on with their ratings on the club. Indiana was listed as a home ‘dog six times this season and it went 2-4 in those games while managing to cover three of them. Toronto has gone a respectable 15-7 as a road favorite this season and that makes me believe they’ll get at least a spilt in these next two games played at Indiana.”

The Raptors have won in three of their last four visits to Bankers Life Fieldhouse, including a 101-94 overtime triumph on March 17. Four of the six games between Toronto and Indiana have finished ‘under’ the total, including each game at Bankers Life Fieldhouse.

Western Conference – Game 3 - Warriors lead 2-0
Warriors (-5 ½, 215) at Rockets – 9:35 PM EST – TNT

There isn’t much doubt that Golden State will knock out Houston, but there is plenty of doubt regarding the status of Stephen Curry’s sprained right ankle heading into Game 3. Curry’s status is currently listed as doubtful after last season’s MVP missed Golden State’s 115-106 victory over Houston in Game 2 to take a 2-0 series advantage.

The Warriors won their fifth straight home playoff game over the Rockets since last season’s Western Conference Finals as the defending champions shot 49% from the floor. Klay Thompson paced the Warriors with 34 points, including knocking down 15-of-16 free throws, while Shaun Livingston filled in for Curry with 16 points. Last season’s NBA Finals hero Andre Iguodala scored 18 points off the bench for Golden State, while hitting four three-pointers.

James Harden put together a better Game 2 performance with 28 points and 11 assists after scoring just 17 points in the series opener. Five Rockets scored in double-figures in Game 2, but center Dwight Howard is averaging 13 points per game in this series after attempting seven shots in Monday’s loss. Harden struggled from three-point range by hitting 1-of-8 attempts, but Josh Smith and Jason Terry combined to drill six treys off the bench.

The Rockets have lost six straight meetings with the Warriors since knocking off Golden State in Game 4 of the conference finals last May, 128-115 as 4 ½-point home underdogs. Houston put together an impressive 5-3 SU/ATS mark in the role of a home ‘dog this season, which includes wins over the Thunder (twice), Clippers, and Spurs. The Rockets haven’t been impressive at the Toyota Center since the All-Star break by posting a 7-5 SU and 5-7 ATS record in the last 12 home contests.

During last season’s championship run, Steve Kerr’s club compiled a 6-3 SU and 5-4 ATS record as a road favorite in the playoffs. The Warriors split their four Game 3’s last season on the highway, but routed the Rockets in Game 3 of the Western Conference finals as 1 ½-point underdogs, 115-80.

Game 3 questions: Will Curry play? Will Durant play better?
April 21, 2016

The Oklahoma City Thunder are certain Kevin Durant will play better.

The Golden State Warriors may not know until Thursday night whether Stephen Curry will play at all.

It's the NBA version of the Texas two-step.

With two Western Conference playoff series moving to The Lone Star State for Game 3s, the biggest questions surround the former MVPs.

Durant didn't look like one of the league's best shooters in Game 2 on Monday, when he was 7 for 33 in the Thunder's 85-84 loss to Dallas. It was the most missed shots in Durant's career, and the Mavericks capitalized to even the series with the third-seeded Thunder.

Russell Westbrook said his teammate missed some easy shots, but ''that won't happen again.''

In the lone Eastern Conference game Thursday, Toronto travels to Indiana with the series tied 1-1.

The Warriors lead Houston 2-0, having little trouble with the Rockets on Monday even while Curry rested his injured right ankle.

Golden State lists the NBA's leading scorer as questionable. He said Wednesday he wouldn't have been able to play if the game was that night.

''It's different in the training room walking around versus on the court doing actual basketball moves. But it is getting better,'' Curry said.

A look at the three games Thursday:

---

Raptors at Pacers, series tied 1-1. 7:30 p.m., NBA TV.

Indiana has contained All-Star guard DeMar DeRozan but not center Jonas Valanciunas, who is averaging 17.5 points and 17 rebounds and has sparked Toronto's 32-15 advantage on the offensive glass.

There will be fewer rebounds to get if DeRozan and Kyle Lowry start hitting.

Lowry is 7 for 26, though he played better in Game 2 after the Pacers won the opener. DeRozan is 10 for 37, joining his backcourt mate at 27 percent, and has missed all five 3-point attempts.

Toronto coach Dwane Casey doesn't want DeRozan to force shots, and his teammates are confident they'll come through when the Pacers force DeRozan to give up the ball.

''I still think they're going to try and take me and DeMar out. I think that's still going to be their primary play,'' Lowry said. ''They probably want those guys to do what they've been doing and those guys are hurting them. They're playing extremely well.''

---

Thunder at Mavericks, series tied 1-1. 7 p.m., TNT.

Dallas seemed to get some good injury news Wednesday. Dirk Nowitzki and JJ Barea both said they felt better after some rest, and Nowitzki said he expects to play Thursday after bruising his right knee early in Game 2. Barea is hopeful he can return after sitting out with a strained right groin.

Deron Williams, David Lee and Devin Harris all are still with one ailment or another, making for some long odds against an Oklahoma City team that won all four games in the regular season before a 108-70 rout in Game 1.

''Banged up as we are, we're here to fight,'' Nowitzki said. ''We're here to make this a series, but they're going to come in ready to play obviously.''

And play better, in Durant's case.

''I've just got to make them next time. I've got to prepare, put the work in. It's going to happen, nights like that. That's part of the business,'' Durant said. ''I've just got to keep staying confident. My teammates and my coaches stay confident in me.''

---

Warriors at Rockets, Golden State leads 2-0. 9:30 p.m., TNT.

Even if Curry remains out or limited, the Warriors have shown they're deep enough to win without him. Shaun Livingston got the start at point guard and scored 16 points on 7-of-9 shooting during Golden State's 115-106 victory Monday.

''It doesn't matter if he plays or if he doesn't play. As you can tell, they're still going to run their offense, they're still going to pass, still going to do all that stuff,'' Houston's Dwight Howard said. ''So we just have to make sure that we come out and do what we need to do.''

For Rockets coach JB Bickerstaff, that means playing nastier basketball to match the aggression he said the Warriors are showing.

''This isn't Tuesday night in February in Milwaukee,'' he said.

The key is doing that without leading to fouls. Howard, who fouled out of Game 2, believes the Warriors get away with things that he doesn't.

''They won the championship, so in order to beat them you've got to play better than them. Because you're not going to get any calls,'' Howard said. ''It's just like a boxing match. If you want to beat the champ you've got to knock them out. If you expect to win a decision it's going to be hard. So you've got to go knock them out.''

Pacers remain hopeful about Mahinmi's availability in Game 3
April 20, 2016

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) Indiana Pacers starting center Ian Mahinmi is ready to fight back.

Two days after a sore back forced the 6-foot-11, 262-pound French native out of Monday night's loss at Toronto, Mahinmi told reporters he intends to play Thursday night in Game 3.

''It's that time of year. You always hope to be 100 percent, but it rarely happens,'' Mahinmi said after Wednesday's practice. ''It's one of those things where you just try to play through it.''

Back trouble has been a recurring theme for Mahinmi, who missed six of his 11 games during the regular season with the same injury.

But regardless of his health, Mahinmi has struggled in this first-round series.

Foul trouble limited him to a combined total of 39 minutes in the first two games. He has six points and eight rebounds in the series. Without Mahinmi's strong defense, the Pacers have been unable to slow down Raptors center Jonas Valanciunas, who has back-to-back double-doubles and is averaging 17.0 rebounds.

The series is tied 1-1 as it shifts to Indianapolis for Games 3 and 4, and the Pacers remain hopeful that Mahinmi will be part of the solution to Toronto's strong inside game.

''We're hopeful Ian plays. If he doesn't we'll adjust,'' coach Frank Vogel said. ''You just try to put it (the injury) out of your mind.''

Vogel would not say who would move into the starting lineup if Mahinmi can't go.

All-Star Paul George joked Wednesday that he was practicing at the No. 5 spot, and Myles Turner, the 7-foot rookie who had 10 points, five rebounds and five blocks in a Game 1 victory, said he will be ready to play extended minutes if needed.

But the Pacers understand their defensive problems are not exclusively the result of Mahinmi's injury or foul trouble, and that it will take a group effort to take control of this series on their home court.

''We've got to do a better job of helping our guys down there (in the post),'' George said.

Armadillo: Thursday's six-pack

-- Cavaliers 107, Pistons 90-- Cleveland was 20-38 behind the arc.

-- Heat 115, Hornets 103-- Favorites are 12-4 vs spread so far in playoffs.

-- Clippers 102, Trailblazers 81-- LA held Lillard to 6-22 from floor.

-- Florid 3, NY Islanders 2-- Series heads south tied 2-2

-- Flyers 2, Washington 1-- Philly staves off elimination, at least for one night.

-- Sharks 3, Kings 2-- All four NHL games last night were decided by one goal.

**********

Armadillo: Thursday's List of 13: Doing some thinking out loud.......

13) Cleveland traded the #2 pick in the NFL Draft to the Eagles, for two #1's, a second, third and fourth round draft picks. Browns cit seven starters during this offseason, so they need to re-stock their team. It also means they're going with Robert Griffin at quarterback, which should be interesting.

12) Not sure what the Eagles' new regime is doing; they're obviously going to take whichever QB the Rams do not take, so they must like both players to be OK with trading so many choices, when they don't know which QB it will be. Wonder what Sam Bradford thinks about all of this?

11) Last time the top two choices in the same draft got traded was 1997-- the #3 pick that year got traded too.

10) Carolina Panthers took the franchise tag off CB Josh Norman, making him a free agent; 49ers are rumored to be the team that can afford him that wants him the most.

9) Alabama's spring football game got better TV ratings Saturday than the NHL playoff games played that day.

8) Steve Spurrier would make a terrrific college football analyst, right? I'm hoping one of the networks signs him up so we can learn from him this fall.

7) Random prediction: Jose Reyes winds up as the shortstop for the Bronx Bombers. Reyes' contract and Trevor Story make Reyes expendable in Denver.

6) RIP Dwayne (Pearl) Washington, one of the Big East's first great players, who passed away too early this week at age 52. Washington was a playground in Brooklyn who became a terrific college player.

5) DeAndre Jordan committed a foul on the opening tap last night, before any time came off the clock; don't think I've ever seen that before.

4) Minnesota Timberwolves signed Tom Thibodeau to run their franchose, a smart move; I'm still disappointed he never showed up on TV this season-- would've been fun listening to him talk hoops. I'm wondering if any college programs approached him about coaching their team-- he is a basketball genius.

3) Over/under total for all three NBA games combined last night was 613.5; total wound up being 598, an easy win for the under.

2) Quote of the Day, part II: "Last time I hit was eight years ago."

That was A's pitcher Kendall Graveman, after the Oakland A's lost their DH for the fourth time in 15 games this season, this time because 3B Danny Valencia got hurt and DH Jed Lowrie had to take his place in the field.

1) Rough day for Andrew Jackson, who got taken off the front of $20 bills by the US Treasury, replaced by Harriet Tubman. Jackson moves to the back of $20 bills. It is amazing to me that there are people collecting a paycheck for deciding stuff like this.

Thursday's NBA playoffs betting preview and odds
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Steph Curry had 24 points, in just 19:49 of playing time, in Game 1 before missing Game 2 with an injured ankle and foot.

Reining league MVP Stephen Curry is officially listed as Questionable for Thursday night's Game 3 contest in Houston. Although he has said that his injured ankle and foot are feeling better, the Warriors may hold him out just to be sure.

Oklahoma City Thunder at Dallas Mavericks (+8.5, 196.5)

Series tied 1-1

Dallas forward Dirk Nowitzki plans to play through a bruised right knee and the Mavericks look to take a 2-1 series lead when they host the Oklahoma City Thunder on Thursday. Nowtizki injured the knee during Monday's 85-84 victory, a stunning road win that kept sixth-seeded Dallas alive in the series.

Nowitzki, who said he was injured on the first play of game, underwent an MRI exam that revealed the bone bruise and he was relieved that it wasn't anything more significant. "I had it worked on a little bit and after the game I was really stiff," Nowitzki told reporters on Wednesday. Coming off the plane, I could barely walk anymore. There was some swelling (Tuesday), but it's feeling a lot better, moving around a little bit." The third-seeded Thunder are dealing with a bruised psyche after losing Game 2 following a 38-point beat down of the Mavericks in the series opener. All-Star forward Kevin Durant was a horrid 7-of-33 shooting in Monday's loss, prompting coach Oklahoma City coach Billy Donovan to describe it this way: "For a guy that's been as great a scorer as he has his entire career, for him to shoot the ball the way he did was really uncharacteristic."

TV: 7 p.m. ET, TNT, FSN Oklahoma, KTXA (Dallas)

LINE HISTORY: The Thunder opened the betting for this matchup as 8.5-point favorites. The line initially dropped to Dallas +8, then rose as high as +9.5, before settling back down to the opening number of +8.5. The total opened at 197 and dropped slightly to 196.5. View complete line history here.

ABOUT THE THUNDER (56-28, 38-45-1 ATS, 39-45 O/U): Durant, who scored 21 points, had never previously missed 26 shots before in a game and he didn't have any answers for why he shot so poorly. "Bad shooting night for me," Durant said. "It's a part of it. I wish it didn't happen tonight, but it's a part of it. Got some great looks all night and just didn't knock them down. Just stick with my routine - don't do too much extra." Point guard Russell Westbrook also shot a poor percentage (8-of-22) while contributing 19 points and 14 rebounds but only six assists.

ABOUT THE MAVERICKS (43-41, 46-37-1 ATS, 39-44-1 O/U): Nowitzki's injury is just the latest in a long line of ailments for Dallas, which won't know until close to game time whether or not point guards J.J. Barea (groin) and Deron Williams (sports hernia) or forward David Lee (foot) will be available. Barea ran after Wednesday's practice - a good sign - while Williams is trying to fight through an injury that will require offseason surgery. "We know from a manpower standpoint we're at a pretty big disadvantage," Mavericks coach Rick Carlisle told reporters. "And we know we're not going to outrun or outdunk or outskill these guys."

TRENDS:

* Thunder are 9-2 ATS in their last 11 games vs. a team with a winning straight up record.
* Mavericks are 0-5 ATS in their last 5 home games vs. a team with a winning road record.
* Under is 6-1 in Thunder last 7 vs. NBA Southwest.
* Under is 9-2 in Mavericks last 11 overall.
* Over is 24-9-1 in the last 34 meetings in Dallas.

Toronto Raptors at Indiana Pacers (+1.5, 193)

Series tied 1-1

Jonas Valanciunas has been Toronto's most reliable performer through the first two games of the series and the Raptors hope the 7-foot center has another strong effort in him when they visit the Indiana Pacers in Thursday's Game 3. Valanciunas averaged team-leading figures of 17.5 points and 17 rebounds as second-seeded Toronto split the first two games with seventh-seeded Indiana.

Valanciunas had 23 points and 15 rebounds in Monday's 98-87 victory as the Raptors evened the series in a contest in which All-Star guards Kyle Lowry and DeMar DeRozan continued to struggle. "We've all got to step up," Valanciunas told reporters. "It's not an individual sport. Some nights are tough for Kyle, some nights it's tough for DeMar, tough for me. Everybody has tough times, so everybody has got to pull for each other." All-Star forward Paul George is averaging 30.5 points in the series but he was annoyed the Pacers returned to Indianapolis with a split instead of a 2-0 lead. "You usually feel good walking away from a road trip with the series tied at one, but I'm upset because a lot of stuff that we gave up was preventable," George told reporters. "(Game 2) was set up the same way for us as Game 1 to rally back and win this game. I thought our focus was lost and we gave up some plays that we shouldn’t have."

TV: 7:30 p.m. ET, NBATV, Sportsnet One (Toronto), FSN Indiana

LINE HISTORY: This game opened as a PICK and the public pushed the Raptors all of the way up to -1.5. The total opened at 193 and was bumped up to 193.5. View complete line history here.

ABOUT THE RAPTORS (57-27, 46-38 ATS, 42-41-1 O/U): Lowry is averaging 14 points on 7-of-26 shooting and DeRozan is averaging 12 points on 10-of-37 shooting as neither player has come close to his All-Star form in the series. Most concerning was DeRozan's Game 2 showing as he didn't attempt a single free throw - he averaged 8.4 per game in the regular season - and coach Dwane Casey kept him on the bench for the entire fourth quarter. "I feel like it's nothing to get frustrated about, I really do," DeRozan told reporters at Tuesday's practice. "I don't mind having bad shooting nights. You have to be able to take the good with the bad. I had a great season, the season is over with and I've had two rough shooting nights. I don't think it's the end of the world; we still won (Game 2)."

ABOUT THE PACERS (46-38, 42-41-1 ATS, 37-47 O/U): George has been terrific but could certainly use some help from his teammates as shooting guard Monta Ellis (15 per game) is the only other Indiana player averaging in double digits in the series. "We all have to do a better job of helping Paul out," Pacers guard Rodney Stuckey told reporters. "We're at our best offensively when we're moving the ball around and moving (our feet)." Other than George, Indiana's frontcourt production has been practically non-existent with starting center Ian Mahinmi (0-of-8 shooting) and starting power forward Lavoy Allen each averaging three points per game and reserve forwards Myles Turner (nine per game) and Solomon Hill (7.5) also with room to improve.

TRENDS:

* Raptors are 1-8 ATS in their last 9 Conference Quarterfinals games.
* Pacers are 8-2 ATS in their last 10 games following a straight up loss.
* Under is 6-0 in Raptors last 6 games following a ATS win.
* Under is 4-0 in Pacers last 4 Conference Quarterfinals games.
* Raptors are 8-1 ATS in the last 9 meetings in Indiana.

Golden State Warriors at Houston Rockets (+6, 217.5)

Warriors lead series 2-0

The Golden State Warriors got some good news in regards to Stephen Curry’s health, but the team might not even need the superstar to get through the first round. The eighth-seeded Houston Rockets are down 0-2 and will try to get back into the series when they host Game 3 on Thursday.

Curry scored 24 points in the first half of Game 1 before leaving with an ankle injury and sat out Game 2. The Warriors breezed to a 115-106 win behind 34 points from Klay Thompson on Monday and on Tuesday announced that an MRI exam on Curry’s ankle showed nothing of concern. "We'll see how he responds the next couple of days, and if he's not right, obviously being up 2-0 does give us more cushion if we decide to sit him," Golden State coach Steve Kerr told reporters after Monday’s win. "But it will be based on his health - not the series score." Whether or not Curry plays, Houston is going to need to find a way to hang onto the ball after totaling 43 turnovers in the first two games.

TV: 9:30 p.m. ET, TNT, CSN Bay Area (Golden State), ROOT (Houston)

LINE HISTORY: The Warriors opened as 5.5-point favorites on the road for Game 3 of this series. The public pounded Golden State and the books were forced to move the Dubs' line up to -6. The total opened at 217 and was bumped up to 218. View complete line history here.

ABOUT THE WARRIORS (75-9, 47-35-2 ATS, 46-37-1 O/U): Curry is listed as questionable for Game 3 and Golden State knows how to play without its star if necessary. “All the guys knew they had to be aggressive with Steph out,” Kerr told reporters after the Game 2 victory. “The best number on the stat sheet is 16 free throws for Klay. I thought he was fantastic. He came up big.” Shaun Livingston started in Curry’s place and scored 16 points on 7-of-9 shooting while Andre Iguodala stepped up off the bench with 18 points and Draymond Green flirted with a triple-double with 12 points, 14 rebounds and eight assists.

ABOUT THE ROCKETS (41-43, 37-47 ATS, 48-36 O/U): James Harden scored 28 points in Game 2 and went 13-of-15 from the free-throw line after not attempting one in Game 1, but Houston appeared disjointed on both ends in both games. Center Dwight Howard has taken some criticism and needed his coach to come to his defense after Game 2. “No, I don’t think he was disinterested,” interim coach J.B. Bickerstaff told reporters. “I thought he was good on the glass. I thought he was running. Give (Warriors center Andrew) Bogut some credit, he does a good job with his size. He’s physical, uses his length, he pushes, he grabs, he holds, so I wouldn’t say he was disinterested. I thought he gave his effort.”

TRENDS:

* Warriors are 9-0 ATS in their last 9 Thursday games.
* Rockets are 8-3 ATS in their last 11 Conference Quarterfinals games.
* Under is 5-0 in Warriors last 5 road games.
* Over is 4-1 in Rockets last 5 home games vs. a team with a winning road record.
* Warriors are 5-1 ATS in the last 6 meetings in Houston.
