Tuesday's Diamond Notes

April 19, 2016

Hottest team: Twins (won four straight)
Following a dreadful 0-9 start, Minnesota has come back to life after winning four consecutive games. The Twins swept a three-game series from the Angels over the weekend, then followed that up with a rain-shortened 7-4 victory over the Brewers on Monday. The key is the offense finally showed up after plating three runs or less in each of their first nine losses, as Minnesota scored 21 runs during this four-game winning streak. Ervin Santana takes the mound for the Twins in a matinee affair against the Brewers, searching for his first win in four starts in spite of owning a 3.00 ERA.

Coldest team: White Sox (lost three straight)
A promising 8-2 start on the South Side has faded along with the White Sox bats over the last few days. Chicago has dropped three straight, including an embarrassing 7-0 home loss to the Angels on Monday as Los Angeles chased southpaw Carlos Rodon with five runs in the opening inning. The Sox offense is nowhere to be found right now, putting up five runs in the last four games, while finishing ‘under’ the total in six of the past seven contests. Chicago hopes to turn things around tonight with veteran Mat Latos searching for his third victory in three starts after the right-hander beat Oakland and Minnesota on the road.

Hottest pitcher: Vincent Velasquez, Phillies (2-0, 0.00 ERA)
Philadelphia acquired the right-hander from Houston in a non-descript trade in December, but Velasquez has quickly turned into fantasy gem in April. Velasquez struck out 16 batters in a complete-game shutout of the Padres in his last outing, beating San Diego, 3-0 for his second victory in two starts. The former Astro silenced the Mets’ lineup in his first outing this season by scattering three hits in six scoreless innings and striking out nine in a 1-0 victory as a +145 road underdog on April 9.

Coldest pitcher: Alfredo Simon, Reds (0-1, 12.15 ERA)
Cincinnati expected to bolster its rotation with the return of Simon following a one-year stint in Detroit, but the right-handed hurler has struggled. Simon wasn’t bad in his first start of the season by allowing five hits and two runs in five innings against the Pirates before the bullpen blew a 5-2 lead in a 6-5 setback. However, Simon was shelled in his next outing against the Cubs by not escaping the first inning in a 9-2 rout at Wrigley Field by yielding five earned runs and recording only two outs.

Biggest UNDER run: Blue Jays (5-0 last five)
Toronto’s explosive offense from a year ago hasn’t quite lived up to expectations this season. The Blue Jays averaged 5.5 runs per game last season, but are plating 4.0 runs per game in 2016. Toronto managed a split of a four-game set at Boston on Monday, as the Jays have averaged 2.8 runs per game in their last six contests away from Rogers Center after putting up five runs in each of their two victories to start the season at Tampa Bay. The Jays travel to Baltimore tonight to face an Orioles’ squad that has eclipsed the ‘over’ in five of the last six games.

Biggest OVER run: Braves (4-0 last four)
Who woke up the Atlanta bats? The Braves finally got in the win column this past weekend by sweeping the Marlins, while scoring six runs in each of those three victories. Atlanta was limited to seven runs in a four-game sweep at Washington last week before breaking out at Miami, as the Braves are riding an 8-2 streak to the ‘over’ the last 10 games. The task won’t be easy to keep that streak alive tonight as the Dodgers invade Turner Field, as Los Angeles has allowed three runs or less in four of the past five contests.

Matchup to watch: Tigers vs. Royals
The top two teams in the AL Central hook up for the first time this season as Kansas City returns home following a 4-3 road trip. The Royals dropped the final two games at Oakland this past weekend, the first time this season the defending champions have lost consecutive contests. The Tigers lost two of three games at Houston last weekend with the two defeats coming by one run each. Yordano Ventura (0-0, 2.45 ERA) has racked up a pair of no-decisions in two Royals’ wins, despite allowing a total of three earned runs in 11 innings. In two home starts against Detroit last season, Ventura struck out 17 batters and yielded one earned runs in a pair of victories.

Betcha didn’t know: Only one team has yet to lose a road game this season and it’s the Oakland Athletics. Granted, the A’s have played only three times away from the Coliseum, but they were victorious in all three games at Seattle earlier this month. Oakland cashed the ‘under’ in each victory at Safeco Field, while limiting the Mariners to a total of four runs.

Biggest public favorite: Yankees (-170) vs. Athletics

Biggest public underdog: Mets (+102) at Phillies

Biggest line move: Rays (+110 to -105) at Red Sox

LEADING OFF: Velasquez, Garcia coming off dominant outings
April 19, 2016

A look at what's happening all around the majors today:

KID STUFF

The Mets aren't the only NL East team with promising young pitching. Philadelphia right-hander Vince Velasquez is coming off a dominant outing in which he struck out 16 Padres during a three-hit shutout. He has thrown 15 scoreless innings to begin the season. Velasquez and fellow youngsters Aaron Nola and Jerad Eickhoff have a combined 78-to-14 strikeout-to-walk ratio over 60 innings. Velasquez faces Logan Verrett and the Mets in Philadelphia.

BIG STORY

Colorado rookie Trevor Story tries to extend his incredible start when the Rockies visit Cincinnati. Story homered and doubled against the Reds on Monday night and has at least one extra-base hit in eight of his 13 games this season. He leads the majors with eight home runs, the most through a player's first 13 games in major league history since 1900. ''You think you might want to give him a day off and he goes out and has another big game,'' Rockies manager Walt Weiss said.

GET WELL SOON

Chris Colabello is looking to get back into Toronto's starting lineup after being beaned by Steven Wright on Sunday, so the Blue Jays first baseman might need to put aside his get-well gift for a little while. The Red Sox pitcher sent a bottle of liquor to Colabello with his apologies. ''It's just more of a token of saying I'm sorry,'' Wright said. ''I didn't really want it to be a public thing because it was really between me and him.''

ENCORE

Cardinals lefty Jaime Garcia tries to follow up the best start of his career when St. Louis hosts the rival Chicago Cubs. Garcia pitched a one-hitter with 13 strikeouts - three more than his previous high - last Thursday in a 7-0 win over Milwaukee. Eight of Garcia's strikeouts were looking, and the 13 Ks were the most by a Cardinals left-hander since Steve Carlton fanned 16 Phillies on May 21, 1970.

CONSISTENT CUBS

Jason Hammel (1-0) starts for the Cubs at St. Louis, looking to extend an impressive streak. Chicago starters have worked at least six innings in every game. The 13-game run to begin the year is the longest in the majors since 1988 when the Astros had a 22-game streak and the Indians went 17 games, according to STATS.

THE OTHER GUY

Stephen Strasburg (2-0, 1.98 ERA) pitches for the Nationals against Marlins lefty Adam Conley (0-0, 3.86), who threw six scoreless innings in his most recent outing against the Mets and impressed his new manager, Don Mattingly. ''He pounded the strike zone,'' Mattingly said. ''He's going to come in there. He's not going to back off. He's going to pitch inside. It's interesting to watch how hitters react to him.''

Cubs-Cardinals Preview
April 18, 2016

ST. LOUIS (AP) John Lackey had a little extra something in the tank for his old team.

The 37-year-old right-hander struck out 11 in seven innings of four-hit ball and delivered an RBI single, leading the Chicago Cubs over the St. Louis Cardinals 5-0 Monday night.

''I've been known to be able to focus a little bit, I guess,'' Lackey said. ''I kind of like this sort of situation.''

''You could tell he was amped up,'' Cardinals manager Mike Matheny said.

Jason Heyward, playing at Busch Stadium for the first time since leaving to sign with Chicago, was 0 for 4 at the plate, made two nice catches in right field and was booed throughout.

''Oh yeah, you hear it. It's fun, it's cool, whatever,'' Heyward said. ''They don't boo too often, so it must be somebody important or somebody doing something worth booing.''

Dexter Fowler homered for the second time in three days for the Cubs, a major league-best 10-3 and off to their best start since 1970. Chicago has won 15 of its last 16 regular-season road games, going 6-1 this year.

Fowler homered in the sixth, and rookie shortstop Aledmys Diaz misplayed a potential double-play grounder in the Cubs' three-run seventh, throwing the ball wildly for an error as a run scored. Addison Russell had a sacrifice fly and Lackey, who entered with a .111 career batting average, singled for a 4-0 lead and his seventh RBI in 129 career at-bats.

He has a hit and an RBI in his last two starts. But it was the pitching numbers that really mattered.

''We talked about it before the game, the focus he was going to have,'' Cubs manager Joe Maddon said. ''He had his sharpness tonight.''

Matheny wasn't too hard on Diaz, who doubled and is batting .400 in 35 at-bats.

''Young player, it happens,'' Matheny said. ''We do also see a trend of him getting better the more he gets out there.''

Lackey has a 12-4 record at 11-year-old Busch Stadium after entering with a 2.03 ERA at the park, his best among stadiums with four or more starts.

''I feel like it's by far the best place to pitch in the division, as far as size and not giving up homers,'' Lackey said.

Mike Leake (0-2) allowed four runs - three earned - and six hits in seven innings in his home debut for St. Louis. At the plate, he botched a squeeze bunt in the fifth, although Kolten Wong scrambled back to third safely to Lackey's ire.

''It was a tough pitch to try to get down. I guess I'll try to practice a little more,'' said Leake, one of the game's best hitting pitchers. He entered with a .210 career average.

Lackey (3-0) struck out cleanup hitter Brandon Moss three times, and fanned leadoff man Matt Carpenter and No. 5 hitter Stephen Piscotty twice each. The 11 strikeouts, one shy of his career high, was his 20th double-digit strikeout game.

Lackey was 13-10 with a career-best 2.77 ERA with St. Louis last year, taking over as ace after Adam Wainwright tore his left Achilles tendon in April.

TRAINER'S ROOM

Cardinals: SS Ruben Tejada was activated from the 15-day DL from a strained left quadriceps but did not play.

ROTATIONAL PULL

Cubs starters have worked at least six innings in every game. The 13-game streak to start the year is the longest in the majors since 1988 when the Astros had a 22-game streak and the Indians went 17 games, according to STATS.

NUMBERS GAME

Heyward is 1 for 18 against Leake with one RBI although he lined out sharply twice. Moss entered 4 for 8 with two RBIs against Lackey.

UP NEXT

Cubs: RHP Jason Hammel (1-0, 0.75 ERA) has allowed one run in 12 innings with nine strikeouts. He's 2-3 with a 5.97 ERA in seven career starts against St. Louis.

Cardinals: LHP Jaime Garcia (1-0, 2.40) threw a one-hitter with 13 strikeouts his last time out against Milwaukee.

Armadillo: Wednesday's six-pack

-- Hawks 89, Celtics 72-- Favorites are 9-4 vs spread in NBA playoffs.

-- Spurs 94, Memphis 68-- If this series was a fight, it would've been stopped.

-- Blues 4, Blackhawks 3-- Chicago is in trouble, down 3-1 in series.

-- Ducks 3, Predators 0-- Road team won all three series games.

-- Lightning 3, Red Wings 2-- Tampa Bay grabs 3-1 series lead.

-- Penguins 3, Rangers 1-- Road team won all four NHL games last night.

**********

Armadillo: Wednesday's List of 13: Mid-week musings.......

13) Chicago Cubs are off to an 11-3 start; their starting pitching lasted at least six innings n all 14 games, which is huge, takes the strain off the bullpen.

Cincinnati is 7-7, despite it starting pitcher lasting 6+ innings four times.

12) Since 2010, the low-budget Tampa Bay Rays are 60-53 against the Boston Red Sox, 59-52 against the Bronx Bombers, their big money rivals.

11) Jacob deGrom is having a good week; his newborn has come home from the hospital after a medical scare last week and then deGrom threw 71 pitches in a simulated game Monday, meaning he probably avoids a stint on the DL.

10) Oakland A's won their fifth one-run game of the season last night; last year, they won their fifth one-run game of the season on June 16.

9) Big 14 Conference hasn't had a QB taken in the first round of the NFL Draft since Kerry Collins in 1995.

8) Lookalikes: New York City mayor Bill DeBlasio and Bills' coach Rex Ryan.

7) Over last three years, Florida State has had 13 players taken in first two rounds of the NFL Draft; next highest is Alabama, with ten.

6) The original Rocky was on last night, a great movie; hard to believe it is 40 years old. Can still remember sitting in the theater watching it for the first time; The theater I watched it in is long gone, replaced by a car delearship.

5) NHL teams with a 3-0 lead in playoff series are 179-4 in those series, but two of the four losses have come since 2010.

4) '85-'86 Celtics are the only NBA team to win consecutive playoff games by 30+ points; Spurs came close last night, beating overmatched Memphis by 26 in Game 2.

3) Bernie Sanders went to the same high school in Brooklyn as Chris Rock and the great actor Martin Landau.

2) North Carolina had 99 basketball practices this season; they played 40 games and had 99 practices. Spurs have played 84 games (not counting preseason games) this season. Wonder how many practices (not counting game day walk-thru's) they've had?

1) Its about time Major League Baseball got off its butt and made a decision on the Jose Reyes situation; criminal charges in Hawai'i were dropped three weeks ago, the Rockies are already 8-6 and Reyes hasn't even had his spring training yet. Reyes is still being paid, so the Rockies can't be happy and Reyes isn't happy, since he can't play. Make a decision already!!!!

Hottest team: Braves (won four straight)
The Braves ripped off their fourth straight win on Tuesday, continuing an impressive rebound from an 0-9 start to replace a Twins team that also followed up nine losses with four triumphs. Former Atlanta starter Alex Wood was greeted rudely at Turner Field as his ex-team plated a pair of runs against him in three of the first four innings, cruising to a 9-1 win in the series opener against the visiting Dodgers.

Catcher Tyler Flowers went 4-for-4 and drove in three, CF Mallex Smith had a career-high 3 RBI and LF Jeff Francoeur scored a pair and drove in two as the Braves won at home for the first time. While Freddie Freeman gets the most attention in the Braves batting order, multiple others have really gotten it going to key this offensive surge. Winless ace Julio Teheran is expected to take the mound against L.A. on Wednesday after he was scratched due to illness yesterday. The Dodgers counter with promising rookie Ross Stripling (0-0, 2.03).

Coldest team: Red Sox (lost three straight)
The Red Sox followed up a Patriots’ Day loss where they managed just one run over the first eight innings by failing to score in 10 against visiting Tampa Bay on Tuesday. Boston squandered an opportunity with the bases loaded and no one out in the third inning and never really threatened again. Rays pitching struck out 14 Red Sox batters and didn’t allow a hit after Jackie Bradley, Jr. singled to load the bases. The BoSox are 0-4 in '16 when scoring three runs or fewer.
Boston only scored once until the ninth inning in the first game of this current losing streak, so this funk is certainly lingering. Rays ace Chris Archer (0-3, 5.87) will look to keep Sox bats on ice in order to break through for his first win of 2016. David Ortiz has hit Archer hard, owning a .346 average, two homers and 11 RBI in just 26 career at-bats against him. Archer won his first start against the Red Sox as a rookie, but is 0-6 with a 5.12 ERA in the 10 starts he’s made since then. Rick Porcello (2-0, 5.11) will go for Boston, hoping to continue rebounding from a rough 15-loss season in 2015.

Hottest pitcher: Chris Sale, White Sox (3-0, 2.35 ERA)
Chicago's ace, one of the top left-handed pitchers in baseball, will look to be the first in all of MLB to four wins in this matinee against the Angels. Sale comes off a complete game two-hit shutout at Tampa Bay where he struck out nine and walked none. He's issued only three free passes in 23 innings thus far, striking out 23. He's 4-0 against the Angels in his career, sporting a 1.70 ERA. Mike Trout and Albert Pujols are a combined 5-for-28 against him, each homering once but striking out seven times.

Coldest pitcher: R.A. Dickey, Blue Jays (1-2, 6.75 ERA)
The veteran knuckle-baller hasn't been able to get through more than five innings in a single start, losing his last two decisions against the Red Sox. Dickey has been wild by his standards, issuing eight walks in just 14.2 innings and looking far more hittable at 41 years of age than he has since joining the Jays. Since joining AL East-based Toronto, he's 0-4 with a 4.68 ERA against the Orioles. Chris Davis is just 6-for-25 against Dickey, homering twice but striking out eight times.

Biggest UNDER run: Blue Jays & Red Sox (6-0 last six)
Toronto averaged 5.5 runs per game last season, but are plating 4.0 runs per game in 2016, scoring exactly that figure in Monday's 4-3 win at Baltimore. Boston was on board for the first four of Toronto's unders and has continued to struggle on this homestand as detailed above. After scoring at east six runs in five of their first six contests, the Red Sox haven't done so since.

Biggest OVER run: Braves (5-0 last five)
Atlanta has scored 26 runs (6.5 per game) over its current four-game winning streak, managing the explosion despite the fact they haven’t hit a single homer in that span. Atlanta is 4-0 since moving Nick Markakis into the leadoff spot, riding his hot bat since he’s reached safely in an MLB-best 25 consecutive games.

Matchup to watch: Diamondbacks vs Giants
Zack Greinke has yet to pick up a win for a Diamondbacks squad that signed him to a six-year, $206.5 million contract, but he did pitch well enough to help them hang around in a 3-2 win in San Diego last time out. He's owned the Giants over the last three years, going 7-0 with a 1.94 ERA. Greinke is 2-0 with an 0.90 ERA at AT&T Park in that span, striking out 22. Old friend Madison Bumgarner will be on the mound against Greinke. He's faced off with Clayton Kershaw twice and comes in 1-1 with a 4.50 ERA. Since going 0-3 against the Snakes in 2012, MadBum is 5-3 with a 1.87 ERA against them over the last three seasons.

Betcha didn’t know: The Pirates (-155) were upset in San Diego 5-4 on Tuesday, surrendering an early 3-0 lead. Despite the loss, Andrew McCutchen, Starling Marte and Gregory Polanco each stole a base, becoming the first entire outfield to do so in the same game this season. The steals were no match for the Padres' three home runs, nor the 3-for-15 hitting with runners in scoring position. Pittsburgh left 10 men on base, increasing its league-leading average of runners stranded to 9.2, a total of 129 over the first 14 games. Wasteful.

Biggest public favorite: White Sox (-150) vs. Angels

Biggest public underdog: Tigers (+100) at Royals

Biggest line move: Orioles (-108 to -125) at Red Sox

Armadillo: Thursday's six-pack

-- Cavaliers 107, Pistons 90-- Cleveland was 20-38 behind the arc.

-- Heat 115, Hornets 103-- Favorites are 12-4 vs spread so far in playoffs.

-- Clippers 102, Trailblazers 81-- LA held Lillard to 6-22 from floor.

-- Florid 3, NY Islanders 2-- Series heads south tied 2-2

-- Flyers 2, Washington 1-- Philly staves off elimination, at least for one night.

-- Sharks 3, Kings 2-- All four NHL games last night were decided by one goal.

**********

Armadillo: Thursday's List of 13: Doing some thinking out loud.......

13) Cleveland traded the #2 pick in the NFL Draft to the Eagles, for two #1's, a second, third and fourth round draft picks. Browns cit seven starters during this offseason, so they need to re-stock their team. It also means they're going with Robert Griffin at quarterback, which should be interesting.

12) Not sure what the Eagles' new regime is doing; they're obviously going to take whichever QB the Rams do not take, so they must like both players to be OK with trading so many choices, when they don't know which QB it will be. Wonder what Sam Bradford thinks about all of this?

11) Last time the top two choices in the same draft got traded was 1997-- the #3 pick that year got traded too.

10) Carolina Panthers took the franchise tag off CB Josh Norman, making him a free agent; 49ers are rumored to be the team that can afford him that wants him the most.

9) Alabama's spring football game got better TV ratings Saturday than the NHL playoff games played that day.

8) Steve Spurrier would make a terrrific college football analyst, right? I'm hoping one of the networks signs him up so we can learn from him this fall.

7) Random prediction: Jose Reyes winds up as the shortstop for the Bronx Bombers. Reyes' contract and Trevor Story make Reyes expendable in Denver.

6) RIP Dwayne (Pearl) Washington, one of the Big East's first great players, who passed away too early this week at age 52. Washington was a playground in Brooklyn who became a terrific college player.

5) DeAndre Jordan committed a foul on the opening tap last night, before any time came off the clock; don't think I've ever seen that before.

4) Minnesota Timberwolves signed Tom Thibodeau to run their franchose, a smart move; I'm still disappointed he never showed up on TV this season-- would've been fun listening to him talk hoops. I'm wondering if any college programs approached him about coaching their team-- he is a basketball genius.

3) Over/under total for all three NBA games combined last night was 613.5; total wound up being 598, an easy win for the under.

2) Quote of the Day, part II: "Last time I hit was eight years ago."

That was A's pitcher Kendall Graveman, after the Oakland A's lost their DH for the fourth time in 15 games this season, this time because 3B Danny Valencia got hurt and DH Jed Lowrie had to take his place in the field.

1) Rough day for Andrew Jackson, who got taken off the front of $20 bills by the US Treasury, replaced by Harriet Tubman. Jackson moves to the back of $20 bills. It is amazing to me that there are people collecting a paycheck for deciding stuff like this.
