Hottest team: Mets (5-0 last five)
Following a 2-5 start, many people thought last season’s run to the World Series by New York could have been a fluke. However, the Mets have rebounded lately to win eight of their last nine games, while capturing five consecutive victories. New York rallied past Cincinnati on Tuesday, 4-3, as the Mets have allowed three runs or less in all five games during this hot streak. The Mets go for the sweep tonight with Matt Harvey on the mound before the Giants invade Citi Field this weekend.

Coldest team: Braves (0-7 last seven)
Atlanta began the season at 0-9 before winning four straight games. However, the Braves haven’t won since April 19 against the Dodgers as Atlanta is riding a fresh seven-game skid. During this time, the Braves were swept at home by the Mets and Red Sox, while scoring three runs or less six times during this span. It doesn’t get any easier for Atlanta, as the Braves travel to Fenway Park for two more games with the Red Sox followed by a pair of three-game road sets against the Cubs and Mets.

Hottest pitcher: Jake Arrieta, Cubs (4-0, 0.87 ERA)
Arrieta hasn’t skipped a beat since capturing the Cy Young award last season as the Cubs’ right-hander is coming off his second career no-hitter. Last Thursday, Arrieta didn’t allow a hit in a 16-0 rout of the Reds, while not giving up an earned run for the third time in four starts. Arrieta enters tonight’s contest against the Brewers as a heavy -340 favorite, but tossed a complete-game shutout as a -325 favorite against Milwaukee last September.

Coldest pitcher: Colin McHugh, Astros (1-3, 7.56 ERA)
It’s been a disastrous start for the Houston right-hander as McHugh has allowed four earned runs in three of his first four outings. McHugh was racked in a pair of home losses to the Tigers and Red Sox by giving up 10 hits in each of those defeats, while yielding nine earned runs in 9.1 innings of work. Last season, McHugh won two of three meetings with the Mariners, but was knocked around in an 8-1 home loss by giving up eight earned runs in three innings of work.

Biggest UNDER run: Rays (2-0 last two)
Although this streak isn’t currently very long, Tampa Bay continues to cash plenty of ‘unders’ at Tropicana Field. Tampa Bay is coming off a pair of ‘unders’ against Baltimore to improve to 9-2 to the ‘under’ at home this season. The Rays won each game behind strong pitching performances from Chris Archer and Jake Odorizzi (2-0 and 3-1), while Tampa Bay hasn’t scored more than three runs at home in six of its last seven contests at the Trop.

Biggest OVER run: Cardinals (4-0 last four)
St. Louis needed to travel out west to find its offense, as the Cardinals have scored 34 runs in the last four games. The Cards put up 19 runs in a pair of victories at San Diego, followed by 15 runs the past two nights against the Diamondbacks. Eleven times this season the Cardinals have plated at least seven runs, while doing so seven times away from Busch Stadium. However, St. Louis is facing a left-handed starting pitcher for only the fourth time this season when the Cards see Arizona southpaw Patrick Corbin tonight. The Redbirds have cashed the ‘over’ in two of three opportunities when squaring off with a left-handed hurler.

Matchup to watch:
Athletics vs. Tigers
Oakland and Detroit have split the first two games of this series at Comerica Park with each team winning each matchup by four runs apiece. The pitching matchup evens out tonight with Justin Verlander and Sonny Gray taking the mound for the third game of this four-game set. Oakland has thrived on the highway with an 8-3 record, while Gray is coming off a road underdog victory at Toronto in his last outing. Verlander is winless in two home starts against the Pirates and Indians, but pitched well in a 2-1 defeat to Cleveland last Friday by striking out 10 in seven innings in spite of allowing a pair of solo home runs.

Betcha you didn’t know: The Pirates have owned the Rockies at Coors Field over the years by winning seven straight meetings in Denver. Andrew McCutchen went deep three times in Tuesday’s 9-4 rout of the Rockies, as the Pirates have scored at least five runs in each of the past seven wins at Colorado. The Pirates face Colorado’s Jonathan Gray tonight, as Pittsburgh beat him twice last season, including scoring five runs on the right-hander in less than five innings of a 9-3 rout last September.

Biggest public favorite: Nationals (-210) vs. Phillies

Biggest public underdog: Royals (+105) at Angels

Biggest line move:
Diamondbacks (+100 to -120) vs. Cardinals

Arrieta calls PED whispers "flattering"
April 26, 2016

CHICAGO (AP) Jake Arrieta says it is ''flattering'' that ''some of the best players in the game'' are spreading rumors that Arrieta is using performance-enhancing drugs.

The National League Cy Young Award winner and Chicago Cubs ace didn't name names Tuesday but said his teammates have heard rumors from other players that the right-hander has used PEDs to fuel his emergence with the Cubs. As manager Joe Maddon says, ''we've all become suspicious'' in baseball.

''I think it's funny because I've always been in good shape,'' Arrieta said. ''I just (stunk) early in my career.''

Arrieta went from hyped prospect to disappointing big leaguer while with the Orioles but has transformed into one of the game's best pitchers since a trade to Chicago in 2013. He has two no-hitters in his last 11 regular season starts, including last week against Cincinnati.

The 30-year-old Arrieta credited his career turnaround to a comprehensive workout program and eating well. Maddon added ''command and confidence'' to the mix.

''I threw 96, 98 (mph) when I was younger. And I still feel like I'll be able to do that for a long time,'' Arrieta said. ''If people call into question my work ethic, that's fine, because I know what I'm doing behind the scenes.

''It is somewhat flattering, especially when some of those comments are coming from some of the best players in the game.''

Arrieta is a strong supporter of the drug-testing policy adopted in conjunction with the players' union. Last week, Toronto first baseman Chris Colabello was suspended 80 games for a positive steroids test.

''It's apparent that guys are still trying to take things, and I think it's unfortunate,'' Arrieta said.

''I think guys will continue to do so unless the penalties are stiffer,'' he added. ''I personally don't think guys should (get) multiple chances when they fail a steroid test.''

Arrieta's numbers - 15-0 with an 0.53 ERA in his past 16 starts - are staggering. Especially since he was carrying a 7.23 ERA when Baltimore traded him to Chicago in a July 2013 deal that involved journeyman Scott Feldman.

''I eat plants and I eat lean protein. That's my gig, that's what I do,'' Arrieta said. ''I watch what I eat and I train properly. My mom is (6-foot-1) and my dad is 6-4, so I'm going to be big, regardless.

''I could be 30 pounds heavier if I played football. But I play baseball and I do Pilates. I strength train with heavy weights occasionally and this is the result.''

The Cubs have won Arrieta's last 17 starts, tying a franchise record. He'll face the Brewers on Wednesday night trying improve on a 24-game stretch in which he's 20-1 with an 0.86 ERA, 33 walks and 173 strikeouts.

''There's food and supplements that you can take legally that will better your body and help you stay healthy,'' Arrieta said. ''Shortcuts are something that's always been around all sports, but as a union, we're trying to do the best we can to weed those guys out of the game.''

Yankees, Rangers hook up
April 27, 2016

NEW YORK YANKEES (8-11) at TEXAS RANGERS (11-10)

First pitch: Wednesday, 8:00 p.m. ET
Sportsbook.ag Line: New York +120, Texas -130, Total: 9.5

The Yankees and the Rangers meet in the rubber game of the three-game series at Globe Life Park in Arlington.

The Yankees (8-11) won the series opener, 3-1, on Monday night, but the Rangers (11-10) evened the series on Tuesday with a 10-1 thrashing. You can expect a lot of runs in the rubber game of the series, as Yankees LHP CC Sabathia (1-1, 5.28 ERA, 10 SO, 8 BB in 15 1/3 innings) will take on Rangers LHP Martin Perez (0-2, 4.50 ERA, 11 SO, 13 BB in 24 IP) in a battle of lefty hurlers. Neither starter has looked sharp to start the season.

In Texas’ victory on Tuesday, LF Ian Desmond (.211, 3 HR, 8 RBI, .309 OBP) hit a 433-foot solo shot and 2B Rougned Odor (.234, 3 HR, 14 RBI, .272 OBP) added a 416-foot blast in the ninth inning. RF Nomar Mazara (.365, 2 HR, 6 RBI, .426 OBP) and 1B Mitch Moreland (.239, 2 HR, 7 RBI, .301 OBP) each chipped in with a pair of hits, and SS Elvis Andrus (.343, 0 HR, 12 RBI, .370 OBP) went 3-for-4 to up his average to .343.

Texas has the second-most runs in the American League (92) and the Bronx Bombers are tied with Tampa Bay for the least (70). If the game is tight in the later innings, though, the Yanks have the advantage. New York’s bullpen (3.30 ERA) has been much more reliable than Texas’ (5.04 ERA). The Rangers have played very well at home (7-4) this season.

Where is the Yankees’ offense? Joe Girardi’s club is 11th in the AL in average (.238) and second-to-last (.191) with men in scoring position. It also has the second-fewest hits (152) in the AL and is dead last in doubles (20). No Yankees starter is batting .300, with 2B Starlin Castro (.278, 3 HR, 11 RBI, .325 OBP) and LF Brett Gardner (.271, 2 HR, 4 RBI, .403 OBP) leading the way. RF Carlos Beltran (.264, 4 HR, 9 RBI, .289 OBP) leads the club in homers with just four.

1B Mark Teixeira (.254, 3 HR, 10 RBI, .375 OBP), CF Jacoby Ellsbury (.253, 1 HR, 8 RBI, .282 OBP), 3B Chase Headley (.157, 0 HR, 2 RBI, .290 OBP) and DH Alex Rodriguez (.145, 2 HR, 6 RBI, .242 OBP) have really been struggling. The only Yankee with more than four career at-bats against Perez is backup 2B Dustin Ackley (.067, 0 HR in 15 AB). He’s 3-for-10 lifetime with a homer against the 25-year-old. For his career, Sabathia is 12-4 against the Rangers with a 5.10 ERA.

Mazara just continues to rake in his rookie campaign. Andrus has been terrific as well, and veteran Adrian Beltre (.300, 3 HR, 12 RBI, .345 OBP, 7 2B) just continues to produce at age 37. DH Prince Fielder (.192, 2 HR, 15 RBI, .258 OBP) had an RBI single on Tuesday night, but the six-time All-Star is still looking to find his rhythm at the plate. Jeff Banister’s club is hitting .245 against left-handed starters, and it’s seen its fair share of Sabathia, who’s been in the majors since 2001.

Andrus (10-for-22 with 4 RBI) has loved facing the former Cy Young Award winner, though Fielder (5-for-19 with 1 HR and 4 RBI) and Beltre (8-for-34 with 1 HR, 3 2B and 5 RBI) haven’t had a ton of success against him. In Perez’s lone career start against the Yankees (on July 28, 2015), he surrendered eight earned runs in just an inning of work.

LEADING OFF: Arrieta in 1st start after no-no, Braves slump
April 27, 2016

A look at what's happening all around the majors today:

ARRIETA ENCORE

Cubs ace Jake Arrieta makes his first start since throwing a no-hitter when he faces the Brewers at Wrigley Field. The reigning NL Cy Young Award winner pitched his second career no-no last Thursday at Cincinnati.

Johnny Vander Meer in 1938 became the only pitcher to throw two straight no-hitters, doing it for the Reds.

The Cubs have won the last 17 times Arrieta has started, matching a team record.

POWER OUTAGE

The Braves' home-run drought has reached a whopping 15 games going into their matchup with the Red Sox at Fenway Park. It's the worst homer slump for the franchise since a 16-gamer for the Boston Braves in 1946.

Atlanta has hit just three home runs in 20 games this year.

NO PENALTY

Tigers outfielder Tyler Collins will be able to stay on the field. He won't be suspended by Major League Baseball for directing an obscene gesture at booing home fans after losing a ball in the lights Monday night.

HARD TIME FOR HARVEY

Mets star Matt Harvey (1-3) has a 5.24 ERA after four starts going into this outing against Cincinnati. Batters are hitting .200 (11 for 55) against him through four innings this season, .353 (6 for 17) in the fifth and .714 (10 for 14) in the sixth.

GETTING CLOSER

The Rangers might say what the next step is for ace Yu Darvish, fresh off throwing another live batting practice session.

Darvish last pitched in a major league game in August 2014 and had Tommy John surgery in March 2015. The 29-year-old righty was 39-25 with a 3.27 ERA in his first three seasons with Texas and was an All-Star each year.

CHECK HIM

The Reds will see how second baseman Brandon Phillips is feeling as he recovers from a pair of injuries. He didn't play vs. the Mets on Tuesday night, a day after a most painful at-bat - he fouled a ball off his shin and left foot, struggled to get back into the batter's box and then was hit on the left ring finger by a pitch.

Armadillo: Thursday's six-pack

-- Warriors 114, Rockets 81-- Not exactly a prideful effort by Houston.

-- Hornets 90, Heat 88-- Charlotte won three games in row after being down 2-0.

-- Blazers 108, Clippers 98-- Hard to win when your floor general breaks his hand.

-- Nashville 2, Anaheim 1-- Was first-ever Game 7 for the Predators.

-- White Sox 4, Blue Jays 0-- Surprising Pale Hose are 16-6, best record in AL.

-- Marlins 2, Dodgers 0-- Mattingly beat his old team the last three nights.

**********

Armadillo: Thursday's List of 13: Doing some thinking out loud.......

13) NFL Draft is tonight; since 1967, USC (68) has had the most first round draft picks, followed by Miami (58), Ohio State (56), Florida (46).

12) I enjoyed the mock draft on NFL Network this week, despite occasional screaming/yelling whenever Michael Irvin got involved. It was a little bit like a fantasy draft but without the laboring over picks, since mock drafts don't have any accountability, the way real teams or even fantasy teams have.

11) Giants' pitcher Jeff Samardzija was a pretty good WR in college; he scored 27 TDs and averaged 14.5 yards/catch.

10) RIP Ozzie Silna, former owner of the Spirits of St Louis of the old ABA, who reaped a bonanza from the NBA when he agreed to fold the Spirits before the NBA-ABA merger in 1976. One of the greatest business deals of all-time, Silna was paid millions and millions of dollars to do absolutely nothing.

9) Houston Astros are 7-15 and in trouble; its not just that they're losing lot of games, they're playing sloppily and their pitching has regressed.

8) Oakland and Detroit brought up their ace pitching prospects to make starts on Friday. A's will have Sean Manaea starting against Houston, Tigers gave Michael Fullmer the call to start against the Twins in Minnesota.

7) A's signed 36-year old lefty Rich Hill as a starter this year; Hill is 3-0, 1.42 in his first three road starts, but is 0-2, 9.00 in two starts at the normally pitcher-friendly Oakland Coliseum.

6) Detroit Tigers are paying Texas $6M a year for the next five years, part of the deal that sent Prince Fielder packing from the Motor City. As Billy Beane said to David Justice in Moneyball, "They're paying you to play against them."

5) San Diego Padres are 0-5 when James Sheidls starts on the mound; they've scored a total of six runs in his five starts. Padres are also the only team that hasn't scored a first inning run on the road this season (10 games).

4) Eric Byrnes is the only player (Oakland, 2003) who has hit for the cycle at AT&T Park in San Francisco. Pablo Sandoval is the last Giant to hit for the cycle-- would like to see a clip of the triple he hit.

3) Georgia Tech still owes former basketball coach Paul Hewitt $2.7M; he has not been the coach there since 2011. Quite a deal his agent made for him.

2) Columbia graduate transfer Grant Mullins chose Cal over Michigan; young Mullins is a 6-3 guard who shot 44.1% on the arc last year.

1) Cool thing about the NFL Draft is that no one knows what will happen when these college kids become pros this summer. Flash back to 1998, just as many people liked Ryan Leaf as Peyton Manning. How did that turn out?

Cards, Diamondbacks clash
April 28, 2016

Sportsbook.ag Line: St. Louis -111, Arizona +101, Total: 9.0

Michael Wacha and the Cardinals look to take three of four from Rubby De La Rosa and the Diamondbacks in the series finale at Chase Field.

After dropping the series opener, 12-7, on Monday, the Cardinals (12-9) have taken two straight from the Diamondbacks (11-12) by a combined score of 19-6 and have a chance to take the series on Thursday night.

On the hill for St. Louis will be RHP Michael Wacha (2-0, 2.82 ERA, 15 SO, 7 BB, 0 HR in 22 1/3 IP), who’s been impressive in his first four starts.

He’ll be opposed by RHP Rubby De La Rosa (2-3, 5.94 ERA, 18 SO, 6 BB, 3 HR in 16 2/3 IP), who has labored in six appearances (three starts).

De La Rosa has his work cut out for him, as the Cardinals lead the major leagues in runs scored (137).

We might see some long balls in this one, as Arizona leads the majors in homers (34) and the Cards are tied for second (33) with Colorado. Arizona has the second-most hits in the National League (224), and St. Louis is right behind them (211, T-3rd in NL).

What separates these two clubs is their pitching. Mike Matheny’s team owns a respectable 3.86 ERA, compared to Arizona’s dreadful 4.92 mark. The Cardinals have gone an incredible 14-2 against the Diamondbacks over the past three seasons, including an 8-2 record at Chase Field. Arizona is just 4-9 in Phoenix this season.

Rookie SS Aledmys Diaz (.468, 4 HR, 13 RBI, .500 OBP, 8 2B, 1 3B) just continues to defy expectations. The 25-year-old has been the majors’ best hitter in the month of April, which is especially amazing considering he’s been batting in the eight hole in the lineup. Seven-time All-Star Yadier Molina (.333, 0 HR, 10 RBI, .419 OBP, 6 2B, 1 3B) is on fire, and RF Stephen Piscotty (.305, 4 HR, 15 RBI, .380 OBP, 5 2B) has been locked in of late.

RF Jeremy Hazelbaker (.310, 5 HR, 13 RBI, .344 OBP), now a bench player, is tied for the club lead in homers with 1B Brandon Moss (.241, 5 HR, 14 RBI, .344 OBP). The Cards haven’t seen much of De La Rosa, as no player on St. Louis’ roster has more than six career at-bats against him.

Moss is 2-for-5 with a homer against him, and 3B Matt Carpenter (.253, 3 HR, 16 RBI, .411 OBP) is 3-for-5 with a pair of doubles against the righty. In three career starts against Arizona, Wacha is 0-0 with a 4.59 ERA.

After two consecutive down years, 2B Jean Segura (.350, 4 HR, 15 RBI, .375 OBP, 3 SB)—in his first season with Arizona—has reverted back to his All-Star form.

The Diamondbacks have gotten plenty of production from the catcher’s spot, as C Welington Castillo (.250, 6 HR, 12 RBI, .351 OBP) is tied with 1B Paul Goldschmidt (.250, 6 HR, 16 RBI, .431 OBP) for the club lead in homers. In his second big-league season, LF Yasmany Tomas (.288, 5 HR, 12 RBI, 7 2B) looks far more comfortable—and dangerous—at the plate.

Chip Hale’s squad hasn’t seen much of Wacha, as only Castillo (2-for-8 with 1 HR and 3 RBI) has faced him more then five times. In two career starts against the Cards, De La Rosa is 0-1 with a 4.91 ERA. He faced them once last season, on August 27, and surrendered five earned runs in five innings.

Thursday's Diamond Notes
April 28, 2016

Hottest team: White Sox (6-0 last six)
The biggest surprise in the American League this season resides on the South Side of Chicago. The White Sox finished off an impressive three-game road sweep of the Blue Jays, capped off by a 4-0 shutout on Wednesday. After allowing five runs in the series opening victory, Chicago’s pitching staff clamped down on the loaded (but struggling) Toronto offense to give up a combined one run in the past two wins. Since getting shut out at home by the Angels on April 18, the Sox have won eight of their last nine games as they travel to Baltimore to begin a four-game set.

Coldest team: Rockies (0-5 last five)
This category can be reserved for the Braves this season after they lost to the Red Sox on Thursday to fall to 4-17. However, we’ll focus on the Rockies, who try to avoid a four-game home sweep to the red-hot Pirates this afternoon. Colorado won the first game of its homestand against Los Angeles on April 22, but the Rockies have proceeded to lost five consecutive contests, while allowing 36 runs in the past four defeats. The Rockies own a 4-8 record at Coors Field, as Colorado has dropped eight consecutive home matchups with Pittsburgh.

Hottest pitcher: Kenta Maeda, Dodgers (3-0, 0.36 ERA)
The Cubs were rained out last night as Jake Arrieta’s start was moved to this afternoon against the Brewers. Arrieta owns a 4-0 record with a miniscule ERA of 0.87 after registering a no-hitter in his past outing at Cincinnati. But there is one starting pitcher in the National League that owns an ERA lower than Arrieta’s and he pitches for the Dodgers. It’s not Clayton Kershaw, instead it’s Japanese standout Kenta Maeda. The right-hander has allowed one earned run in four starts, while the Dodgers are 3-1 in his four outings. Maeda is making his first start against a team outside the NL West, as each of his last three outings have finished ‘under’ the total.

Coldest pitcher: Clay Buchholz, Red Sox (0-2, 6.33 ERA)
Boston goes its fourth straight win over Atlanta as Buchholz tries to turn around his recent bad luck. The Red Sox right-hander is winless in four starts this season, while giving up five earned runs in three separate outings. The Astros knocked around Buchholz in his last outing on Saturday, but the righty allowed a grand slam to blow the doors open in an 8-3 loss. Buchholz had success against the Braves last season in his lone start at Turner Field by scattering six hits and allowing two unearned runs in seven innings of a 5-2 victory last June.

Biggest UNDER run: Orioles (4-0 last four)
The only team not to register an OVER at home this season is Baltimore, who has finished UNDER the total in all seven games at Camden Yards. The Orioles hit the UNDER in five of six games on their recent road trip, including all three contests at Tampa Bay. The offense hasn’t produced many runs lately, scoring a total of five runs in the last four games, while all three runs in Wednesday’s 3-1 victory over the Rays came on a three-run homer off the bat of right fielder Joey Rickard.

Biggest OVER run: Pirates (13-3 last 16)
Pittsburgh’s offense has exploded since a miserable 1-6 run in mid-April. The Pirates have won eight of their last 11 games, while plating at least six runs in six of the past seven contests. In three victories at Coors Field, the Pirates have reached home plate 24 times, while surviving on Wednesday night in spite of blowing a 7-1 lead in a 9-8 triumph. The Pirates have eclipsed the OVER in nine of the last 11 games away from PNC Park with one of those UNDERS coming on a 12 total in Monday’s 6-1 victory at Colorado.

Matchup to watch: Cardinals vs. Diamondbacks
These two teams finish off this wild series at Chase Field after St. Louis rallied for an 11-4 victory on Wednesday. The Cardinals fell behind 3-1, but pitcher Adam Wainwright cleared the bases with a three-run triple to start the comeback and St. Louis never looked back as they scored nine runs in a three-inning span. All three games in this series have flown OVER the total, as the D-backs look to improve on their 4-9 home record. Rubby De La Rosa takes the mound for Arizona in the finale, coming off a solid performance in his last start, a 7-1 victory over the Pirates in which he allowed three hits and one earned run in six innings of work.

Betcha didn’t know: It took the Phillies 21 games to reach 11 victories, while the 76ers won just 10 games all season in 82 tries. Philadelphia goes for the three-game sweep of Washington this afternoon, as the Phillies last swept a road series last August at San Diego. Since starting the season 0-4 on the road, the Phillies have won six of their last seven games away from Citizens Bank Park, including four victories as an underdog of +140 or higher.

Biggest public favorite: Red Sox (-200) vs. Braves

Biggest public underdog: White Sox (+120) at Orioles

Biggest line move: Tigers (-130 to -140) vs. Athletics

Overachieving NL Pitchers
April 28, 2016

Starting pitching is the biggest component of MLB handicapping and as the first month of the season winds down there are some surprising pitchers off to great starts. Here are a few National League starters with great results through the first few weeks that may be worth fading as their valuation grows.

Jason Hammel - Chicago Cubs: With Jake Arrieta’s continued dominance and veterans Jon Lester and John Lackey behind him the Cubs rotation looks formidable. There are some questions on the backend but so far this season, Jason Hammel has delivered great results for the Cubs with a 3-0 record and a 0.75 ERA that is among the best marks in baseball. The 33-year old has bounced around through four organizations while never winning more than 10 games in a season and it looks unlikely that 2016 will be his breakthrough season.

Hammel has been fortunate in the early going stranding over 92 percent of base runners and his xFIP is more than 4 times higher than his ERA. Hammel has walked nine batters in 24 innings of work and he won’t get to face a Reds lineup that he has 12 scoreless innings against all season. On a loaded Cubs team, Hammel can continue to provide useful innings but with Chicago’s great record, Hammel is likely to face favorite valuation that he won’t deserve.

Gio Gonzalez - Washington Nationals: In his first season with the Nationals in 2012, Gonzalez won 21 games with a 2.89 ERA to finish 3rd in the Cy Young voting. He has just 33 wins in the three-plus seasons since producing rather average results that have worsened slightly each season. Gonzalez was never suspended, but he was linked to the Biogenesis documents and now on the wrong side of 30 it seems unlikely that Gonzalez will ever reemerge as a frontline starter.

Washington and Gonzalez have had a great April, but they have faced an incredibly weak schedule and the four starts for Gonzalez have come against the Braves, Phillies, and Twins with three of those four starts at home. Gonzalez has 25 strikeouts in just over 25 innings of work, but he has benefitted from a .243 BABIP at this point in the season and it feels like an unsustainable pace for the left-hander who will face much tougher lineups in the coming weeks.

Jimmy Nelson - Milwaukee Brewers: The Brewers aren’t expected to hold up well in the loaded NL Central, but Nelson has been a bright spot in the 8-12 start through 20 games. Nelson won 11 games last season in making 30 starts for a struggling team and in five outings in 2016 he owns solid numbers with a 3.16 ERA with 25 strikeouts. He is walking more than four batters per nine innings and he owns a FIP of 5.35, more than two runs higher than his ERA at this point in the season. Nelson has allowed at least two runs in every start as he has rarely been dominant and he has already allowed six home runs.

Nelson is just 26 and he may continue to be the best option in the Milwaukee rotation, but he will likely earn the highest line valuation of the Milwaukee starters as well. With a manageable schedule in the month of May, he may continue to be viable for a few more weeks but don’t expect to see Nelson among the NL pitching leaders by season’s end.

Ross Stripling - Los Angeles Dodgers: With the many early season injuries on the Los Angeles pitching staff, Stripling has had a chance to join the rotation this and he has made the most of it. The 26-year old right-hander didn’t enter the season as even one of the top 10 prospects for the club and he has never even pitched at the AAA level after mediocre results moving up from A to AA in the middle of last season. Stripling might never have even made the big leagues if not for all the holes in the rotation and he incredibly got 22 outs in his major league debut without allowing a hit. He was pulled from the game and no-hitter was lost by the bullpen and predictably the results have been less impressive in this three starts since.

Since his great debut start, Stripling has allowed 19 hits in 15 innings and he has allowed more than four walks per nine innings. He doesn’t get a great deal of ground balls as it is surprising that he has only allowed one home run but making three of his four starts at Dodger Stadium and AT&T Park helps the cause. Hyun-Jin Ryu and Michael Bolsinger are poised to return to the club in the coming weeks with Brandon McCarthy a possibility to be back mid-summer as well as Stripling isn’t likely to keep this position much longer regardless of the results.

Overachieving AL Pitchers
April 27, 2016

Starting pitching is the biggest component of MLB handicapping and as the first month of the season winds down there are some surprising pitchers off to great starts. Here are a few American League starters with great results through the first few weeks that may be worth fading as their valuation grows.

Mat Latos - Chicago White Sox: Latos looked like one of the NL’s better young pitchers a few years ago with the Padres before having a few moderately successful seasons in Cincinnati. After bouncing around last season with few positive outings, Latos was signed for a very cheap one-year deal by the White Sox last winter. That deal has already paid off with Latos 4-0 with a 0.74 ERA for the surprising White Sox who lead the AL Central.

Three of his four starts have come against three of the five worst scoring teams in the AL at this point and Latos is sporting a FIP nearly three runs higher than his ERA. He has benefitted from an unbelievable .167 BABIP in allowing just 13 hits in over 24 innings of work while producing just 13 strikeouts. With matchups with the Orioles, Red Sox and Rangers in the next few weeks, Latos and the rest of the White Sox pitching staff could see lesser results ahead.

Ian Kennedy - Kansas City Royals: The 2015 World Series champions didn’t make much of an off-season splash with the signing of Kennedy being one of the biggest moves. Kennedy has good numbers through four starts with a 2.77 ERA and 23 strikeouts, but he faced struggling Minnesota and Houston offenses in his first two outings. The numbers have deteriorated a bit in his last two starts and he has already walked nine batters in 26 innings of work. Kennedy has been fortunate to allow only 20 hits this season while standing runners on base at an extremely high rate.

After posting marginal numbers pitching for San Diego the past two seasons, Kennedy isn’t likely to find better results this season moving back to the AL. In the early going, Kansas City’s great bullpen hasn’t been as effective as the past two seasons as the prices on Kennedy may be a bit too high in certain matchups ahead.

Jordan Zimmermann - Detroit Tigers: Zimmermann didn’t endear himself to Tigers fans over the winter as the Wisconsin native made a celebratory tweet after the improbable Packers win over the Lions, but given his first month results all may be forgiven. Zimmermann is 4-0 with a miniscule 0.35 ERA in his move to the AL after several successful but often injury plagued seasons with Washington. Zimmermann only has 16 strikeouts in 26 innings and he has allowed 22 hits despite allowing just one earned run in four starts.

Zimmermann’s past results command respect on the betting line, but his tiny ERA may push those prices even higher even with the Tigers looking like an erratic group in the first month of the season. Zimmermann should have a good season, but he isn’t likely to stay on the Cy Young radar for much longer and fading him while his numbers are among the best in the league will present the best value.

Cole Hamels – Texas Rangers: Hamels is 3-0 this season with the Rangers with a solid 2.52 ERA and a pretty strong strikeout rate. This was after fairly mixed results joining the Rangers last August for the playoff push. Quality starting pitchers don’t sign with the Rangers as the ballpark has been known to take a toll which is why the Rangers were willing to give up so much to get Hamels last summer with his contract going through 2018. So far this season it looks like a shrewd move as Hamels has handled being the staff ace until Yu Darvish can return even though the 2015 AL West champions have had inconsistent results so far this season.

Hamels owns a FIP of 5.14 through four starts, or more than twice his ERA, as he has lacked the precise control he has enjoyed much of his career, already walking 11 so far this season. Hamels has allowed four home runs and 20 hits despite surrendering only seven runs in 25 innings of work as he has been pretty fortunate in the early going. Hamels is capable of having a solid season even in Arlington, but he will look like a risk as a heavy favorite in a ballpark where scoring is commonplace especially with a couple of teams that can handle left-handers in the division.
