Wednesday's Tips

March 4, 2014

Grizzlies at Nets – 7:35 PM EST

Memphis: 34-25 SU, 27-30-2 ATS
Brooklyn: 29-29 SU, 30-28 ATS

The Grizzlies continue their push towards the Western Conference playoffs after starting their three-game road trip with a 110-104 triumph at Washington on Monday. Amazingly, Memphis sits in ninth place inside the West in spite of a 19-6 straight-up record the last 25 games, but the Grizzlies own a 3-4 SU and 4-3 ATS record the past seven away contests. Dave Joerger’s club has pushed the tempo lately by hitting the ‘over’ in seven straight games, while busting the 107-point mark in each of the last four contests. The Grizzlies are playing with revenge on Wednesday after getting tripped up by the Nets in late November as seven-point home favorites, 97-88.

Brooklyn returned home from a 4-2 road swing to dominate Chicago on Monday, 96-80 to beat the Bulls for the first time in three tries this season. Jason Kidd’s team has won five straight games at the Barclays Center, while winning five of the last six at home against Western Conference foes. The Nets are 6-2-1 to the ‘over’ the past nine opportunities after scoring less than 100 points in the previous contest, while scoring at least 105 points in the last four times in this situation.

Bulls at Pistons – 7:35 PM EST

Chicago: 33-27 SU, 31-29 ATS
Detroit: 24-36 SU, 27-32-1 ATS

These two division rivals are meeting up for the first time in nearly three months, as the road team has taken each of the first two matchups. The Bulls have won nine of their last 11 games, with the two losses coming on the highway to the Nets and Heat by double-digits. Since suffering a four-game skid in December, Chicago has compiled a 10-1 SU and 9-2 ATS record off a loss, while dropping consecutive road games just twice since December.

The Pistons snapped a four-game skid in Monday’s 96-85 triumph over the slumping Knicks, while limiting an opponent to less than 100 points for the first time in eight games. Detroit has hit the ‘over’ in 10 of the past 13 games, including six of the last nine at the Palace of Auburn Hills. In four home contests against Central Division foes, the Pistons have lost three times, including a 99-79 setback to the Bulls in late November.

Mavericks at Nuggets – 8:05 PM EST

Dallas: 36-25 SU, 34-27 ATS
Denver: 25-34 SU, 25-34 ATS

The Nuggets continue to crash and burn after losing their sixth straight game on Monday to the Wolves. Denver managed a cover as 5 ½-point home ‘dogs with a 45-point fourth quarter, but the Nuggets’ defense has allowed at least 100 points in 16 of the last 17 games. Brian Shaw’s club has dropped five consecutive contests at the Pepsi Center since the All-Star break, as Denver lost just three regular season home games all of last season. In two matchups this season, the Nuggets have bested the Mavericks, including a 102-100 triumph as five-point underdogs on November 23.

The Mavs have lost consecutive games just three times since Christmas, as Dallas is coming off back-to-back losses to Chicago and San Antonio. Rick Carlisle’s squad picked up a late cover as 6 ½-point road ‘dogs against the Spurs on Sunday, improving to 6-3 ATS the last nine when receiving points away from the American Airlines Center. Dallas has broken the 100-point mark in seven of the past nine games on the highway, while cashing the ‘over’ seven times in this span.

Hawks at Blazers – 10:35 PM EST

Atlanta: 26-32 SU, 27-30-1 ATS
Portland: 41-19 SU, 32-28 ATS

The Hawks have fallen apart at the seams, dropping 11 of their past 12 games to drop into the eighth spot in the Eastern Conference playoff race. Atlanta continues its six-game road swing, which has started with losses at Boston and Phoenix. Defensively, the Hawks have been atrocious, seeing the ‘over’ hit in seven straight games, while giving up at least 106 points in six of the past seven contests. Atlanta has dropped seven of its previous nine games to Western Conference opponents, while last beating a Western squad on the road on November 5 at Sacramento.

Portland’s five-game winning streak went up in smoke in Monday’s shocking home defeat to the Lakers as 12-point favorites, 107-106. The Blazers have drilled the ‘under’ in six straight contests, but four of those totals closed at 214 or above, including the loss to Los Angeles, which closed at 222 ½. Terry Stotts’ team has not lost consecutive home games this season, but the Blazers are 2-5 ATS the last seven contests as a home favorite of seven points or more. Portland has beaten 10 of 12 Eastern Conference opponents at the Moda Center, but one of those losses did come to a horrid Philadelphia squad back in January.

Fact or Fiction

March 7, 2014

We're officially in the stretch run here of the 2013-14 NBA season, and there are teams jockeying for position in both conferences. To sort through what's fact and what's fiction of what we have seen in the last week in the Association, we're going to go over six pressing topics and make our decisions as to whether they're the truth or just some made up unreality.

FACT

It Was Only a Matter of Time Until the Pacers Faced Market Correction: This doesn't mean that Indiana is a bad team. It just means that the market has been going through correction in its games. Sure, the Pacers had no business losing to the Bobcats by 22 on Wednesday night, but that doesn't mean it's the end of the world. It still only counts as one loss. The Pacers have only covered two games in the last month, but that isn't deterring us from thinking that this is still one of the best teams in the league. The ATS defeats though, might continue to pile up.

The 76ers Really Might Not Reach Their Season Win Total: When you've got a season win total of 16.5 and you start out 3-0, you probably should get there. Philly was 15-31 once upon a time too, at least before this 15-game losing streak. When you really look at it, where are the games which the Sixers are winning down the stretch? Utah on Saturday? The Knicks at the Garden on Monday? Sacramento on Wednesday? If not any of those three games, they'll be on a 22-game losing streak for sure when the Knicks come to town on Friday 3/21, and if that game is lost, the losing streak will reach at least 26 until the end of March when Detroit comes to the City of Brotherly Love.

When Healthy, the Clippers Have the Deepest Team in the NBA: Most think that it's San Antonio which takes that title, but when JJ Redick and Jamal Crawford are healthy, this is a heck of a team. We know that the starting five is legit, and beyond that, the Clips would have Darren Collison, Matt Barnes (or Danny Granger), Crawford, Willie Green, Reggie Bullock, Hedo Turkoglu, and Glen Davis to choose from. That's an amazing roster full of guys with playoff experience on it. Head Coach Doc Rivers might be the man who can get these Clippers into the NBA Finals.

FICTION

The Spurs Proved That They Should Be Amongst the Favorites To Win the Championship When They Beat Up Miami: Sorry, Spurs fans. We just don't believe it right now. Sure, San Antonio whooped up on the Heat last night, but the reason why we don't think that that win was good enough to get the Spurs the inside track is because the Western Conference is just so darn stacked. Even as the #1 seed in the West, the Spurs are likely to have to deal with a team like Memphis in the opening round of the playoffs, and beyond that, it could be Portland or Houston or LA. None of those are good matchups for sure. The Spurs might be the best in the West, but the best doesn't always end up being the deserving favorite.

This Is the Year the Charlotte Bobcats Win Their First Playoff Game: Charlotte has only been to the playoffs once in team history, and it was swept in four games by the Magic several seasons ago. This year, the Bobcats will get into the playoffs again, and many think that a win over Indiana by 22 points at home on Wednesday is an indication that this is the best edition franchise has ever had. That might be true. (As sad as that is.) However, the Bobcats, unless they can run down Brooklyn, who is three games in front of them at this point, will have to deal with either Miami or Indiana in the opening round of the playoffs. Don't think for a second that when all the cards are on the table that there will be any give in either of those teams' games at that point.

The Phoenix Suns Are the Sleeper Team in the Western Conference: Color us unimpressed right now with the Suns. Sure, they have games like they did earlier this week against Oklahoma City when they shoot lights out, Gerald Green goes off for 41 points, and they beat a team they probably had no business beating. But in the playoffs, you have to be consistent. Can the Suns win two games in a six-game series? Surely. But they aren't going to be able to win 12 games against three of the best teams in the NBA just to get to the NBA Finals this year. We love the energy this team has and think Hornacek has done a heck of a job in his first year at the helm, but let's be realistic here for a moment. Teams that play matador defense just don't win championships. It didn't work for the Suns back in their heyday with Steve Nash and Amare Stoudemire, and it isn't going to work with Dragic and company this time around either.

Struggling Cavs 2.5-point faves hosting Knicks

It's feast or famine for Cleveland Cavaliers backers and right now, it's all famine.

The Cavs are 0-3 straight up and against the spread in their last three games having failed against the Memphis Grizzlies, San Antonio Spurs and Charlotte Bobcats.

Despite faltering in recent games, the Cavs are 2.5-point favorites with the New York Knicks visiting Saturday.

Clippers looking strong when double-digit favs

The Los Angeles Clippers have been lights out as huge favorites. The Clippers have covered the past six games when they were favored by double-digit points. The most recent victim of this trend was the Lakers, the Clippers cross-city rival, who got demolished by 48 points Thursday.

As added motivation to bettors, the home team has covered the last five games between the Clippers and the Atlanta Hawks, who LA will host Saturday..

The Clippers opened +13.5 when they host the slumping Hawks.

Bottom-dwellers Jazz/76ers solid Over play

When the Utah Jazz and the Philadelphia 76ers play, they've managed to muster some rare offense. In the past 21 match-ups between the Jazz and 76ers, the Over is 16-5.

The games also trend towards to Over when they are played in Philly. Out of the past 10 played in the Wells Fargo Center the Jazz and 76ers have gone Over seven times.

The Jazz and 76ers open with a total of 206.5.

NBA bettors should fade or forget these four tanking teams
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Tanking is alive and well in the NBA. Just ask former Toronto Raptors GM Brian Colangelo, who admitted to tanking during the 2011-12 NBA season last week.

And with a bumper crop of pro talent in the college ranks counting the days until the NBA Draft and just about 20 games left on the schedule, these four teams could be full tank mode by the end of this week. Bettors beware.

Philadelphia 76ers (15-46 SU, 22-39 ATS)

You knew the tank was on when on draft night, the 76ers traded their starting point guard (Jrue Holiday) for a prospect who everyone knew wouldn’t play this season (Nerlens Noel). However, much to everyone’s surprise, they still find themselves second from bottom.

But after trading their best all-around player, Evan Turner, at the deadline it seems the Sixers want to make a serious run at the basement. The result is a 15-game losing streak (that has featured notable NBA players like Henry Sims and James Anderson playing significant minutes) which has seen them come within 10 points of their opponent only five times.

Los Angeles Lakers (21-42 SU, 33-29-1 ATS)

Think the Lakers are too prideful an organization to throw in the towel? Well, the 408 points they’ve allowed in the last three games says otherwise. Los Angeles is 3-7 SU and 5-5 ATS in its last 10 games, but has been especially dreadful during that three-game stretch, watching New Orleans, the L.A. Clippers, Denver shoot a collective 56.3 percent.

The team sounds like it’s shutting down Kobe Bryant and Steve Nash for the year and with 12 of 19 games remaining against Western Conference playoff games (including two each against OKC, San Antonio, and the L.A. Clippers) the Lakers are quite happy to play out the string and see what the offseason brings them.

New Orleans Pelicans (25-37 SU, 26-32-4 ATS)

It’s obvious the Pelicans expected to be better than they are. That’s the only way to explain putting a first-round pick, along with Nerlens Noel, in their deal to land Jrue Holiday. But they have been bad and the only way for that deal to not look outright terrible is to finish in the bottom five in the league, where that pick becomes a protected one.

New Orleans currently sits with the tenth-worst record but is only three games up on the Lakers, who have the fifth worst. Of the Pelicans remaining games, 14 are against teams currently in the playoffs including seven against the like of the Heat, Thunder, Spurs, Clippers, and Rockets.

Utah Jazz (21-41 SU, 27-32-3 ATS)

A 114-88 loss to the lowly Milwaukee Bucks tells you everything about the Utah Jazz at this point – they’re not too concerned about winning. They followed that crap effort with a loss to New York Friday.

Utah isn’t the most enticing of NBA markets, far away from the bright lights of a Los Angeles, New York, or Chicago. The chances of the Jazz enticing any superstars through free agency aren’t very good, so the NBA draft represents their best hope at getting that transcendent player. Given their recent play it seems the Jazz are making a serious play to get one in this draft.

The problem is they currently sit fifth and what they need – a scorer, namely Andrew Wiggins or Jabari Parker- probably won’t be available to them at that position. So Utah is going to want to try and get as high as possible by losing as much between now and the end of the season.
