Jazz/Grizzlies open with league-low total

Both the Memphis Grizzlies and Utah Jazz have been solid Under plays all season long and that is largely based on their offenses. The Grizz and Jazz are No. 26 and No. 29 in scoring offense this season respectively.

The last five meetings in Utah between the two clubs have gone under the total every time. The Grizzlies, who hold the NBA's best Under mark on the road this season at 12-21, have gone under in their last five road games. The Jazz have gone under in 70 percent of their last 10 games.

The Grizz and Jazz open with a league-low 184.5 total Wednesday night.

Raptors have been horrendous against Boston

The Toronto Raptors have been on fire and they've been especially strong against the spread on the road. However, the Raptors have an appalling ATS record against the Celtics.

The past 28 games between the Raptors and Celtics has seen Toronto carry a 7-20-1 ATS record, but it gets much worse. In the past nine times the Raps have played in the TD Center, they have not covered once, going 0-8-1 ATS.

These two teams have clashed in Boston once already this season with the Raptors were 4-point favorites, but lost outright to the Celtics 88-83. Toronto is currently a 3-point road fave for the meeting in Boston Wednesday.

Spurs put win streak on the line Wednesday

Riding a fantastic 14-game winning streak, the San Antonio Spurs have been the hottest team in the NBA. Not only on a straight up basis either. The Spurs have cashed in for bettors in eight-straight games against the spread.

The SU win streak started back on Feb. 26 with a 120-110 win over the Detroit Pistons. Since then, the Spurs have gone 11-3 ATS at the betting window. The offense has really led the charge for the Spurs, scoring 100-plus points in 11 of the 14 wins. Plus, two of the games saw the Spurs tally 99 points on the offensive end.

The Denver Nuggets will visit the Spurs Wednesday evening. San Antonio is currently a 13-point home fave in the matchup.

Pelicans F Anderson faces surgery

The New Orleans Pelicans confirmed Tuesday that forward Ryan Anderson will not return this season because of a herniated cervical disc.

Anderson is scheduled to undergo surgery on April 8 after treatment proved unsuccessful, the team announced. He has been sidelined since since Jan. 3 with an injury he sustained in a game against the Boston Celtics.

The 25-year-old Anderson played in 22 games this season and averaged 19.8 points and 6.5 rebounds.

In six NBA seasons with the Brooklyn Nets, Orlando Magic and Pelicans, Anderson has career averages of 12.3 points and 5.6 rebounds.

Wednesday's Tips

March 25, 2014

Nets at Bobcats – 7:05 PM EST

Brooklyn: 37-32 SU, 37-32 ATS
Charlotte: 34-37 SU, 40-28-3 ATS

The Nets and Bobcats are meeting for the final time in the regular season as the home team has won the first three matchups. Brooklyn held off Charlotte at the Barclays Center, 104-99 last Wednesday as the Bobcats cashed as 6 ½-point underdogs. The Bobcats had won nine of their previous 10 games at Time Warner Cable Arena prior to Monday’s 100-89 setback to the Rockets, but Charlotte still owns a solid 11-3-1 ATS record the last 15 home contests.

Brooklyn returns home after splitting a pair of overtime games at Dallas and New Orleans on a back-to-back set. The Nets rallied to stun the Mavericks on Sunday night, 107-104 as 4 ½-point ‘dogs, but Brooklyn blew a 20-point lead in Monday’s setback to New Orleans, 109-104. Since losing by 44 at Portland on February 26, the Nets have won 11 of their last 14 games, but all three defeats have come on the highway.

Suns at Wizards – 7:05 PM EST

Phoenix: 42-29 SU, 46-24-1 ATS
Washington: 36-34 SU, 36-33-1 ATS

The Wizards hit the skids on their recent four-game road trip against the Western Conference, losing three times with the lone victory coming over the hapless Lakers. Washington’s defense yielded at least 105 points in each contest, while falling to 1-6 ATS in the last seven games away from the Verizon Center. Now, the Wizards return home for a crucial three-game homestand, as Randy Wittman’s team is just 5-5 SU and 3-6-1 ATS the past 10 games in the Nation’s Capital.

Phoenix is riding a four-game winning streak, coming off Monday’s 102-95 triumph at Atlanta as a 2 ½-point favorite. Jeff Hornacek’s club has covered 12 of its last 15 games on the highway, including an 8-1 ATS mark against the Eastern Conference in this stretch. The Suns will be playing with revenge after getting tripped up at home by the Wizards in late January, 101-95 as 3 ½-point favorites, as Phoenix is just 1-3 SU and 0-4 ATS when avenging a loss this season to an Eastern Conference opponent.

Heat at Pacers – 8:05 PM EST

Miami: 48-21 SU, 30-37-2 ATS
Indiana: 51-20 SU, 35-35-1 ATS

The Heat and Pacers are on a collision course to meet in the Eastern Conference Finals for the second straight season, as the two teams hook up in Indianapolis on Wednesday. The home team has won each of the first two matchups, including a 97-94 triumph by Miami back on December 18, but the Pacers cashed as four-point underdogs. Since an eight-game winning streak from February through the start of March, the defending champs are 5-7 SU and 3-9 ATS the last 12 contests, including a dreadful 1-5 SU and 0-6 ATS record in the highway.

The Pacers are stumbling to the finish after a 25-5 start, as Indiana is just 26-15 since January 1. The 26-15 mark is still impressive, but Frank Vogel’s squad has burned backers with a disastrous 3-15-1 ATS record since the All-Star break. In the last nine games at Bankers Life Fieldhouse, the Pacers have cashed just twice, while currently riding a five-game ‘under’ streak overall. The positive for Indiana over the last six weeks has been the defense at home, limiting 10 straight foes to less than 100 points at Bankers Life Fieldhouse. The Pacers have won three consecutive home meetings with the Heat since Game 4 of last season’s Eastern Conference Finals, while holding Miami to 92 points or less in each victory.

Clippers at Pelicans – 8:05 PM EST

Los Angeles: 50-21 SU, 39-31-1 ATS
New Orleans: 30-40 SU, 31-35-4 ATS

The Clippers embark on their final major road trip of the season, hitting the highway for five games starting in the Big Easy. Things have come easy for Los Angeles of late, winning 13 of its last 14 contests, but the Clips failed to cover as heavy favorites in recent victories over the Pistons and Bucks. During this hot stretch for L.A., the Clips have dominated the Pelicans twice, including a 123-110 triumph at Smoothie King Center on February 24 as 4 ½-point favorites.

The Pelicans have put together a modest three-game winning streak, which includes solid home victories over the Heat and Nets. New Orleans has turned into an ‘over’ team of late, hitting the ‘over’ in six straight games and nine of the last 10, while busting the 100-point mark nine times during this stretch. The Pelicans are holding their own at home, winning five of their past eight at Smoothie King Center, but own a dreadful 2-9 record the last 11 home contests against Western Conference foes.

On the verge of history, 76ers plus points not worth look

The 2013-14 Philadelphia 76ers have been one of the worst teams in history. Their 25-game losing streak has them one loss away from tying the 2010-11 Cavaliers for the longest losing streak in NBA history.

During that span, the 76ers are an abysmal 9-16 against the spread. However, the 76ers are even worse when they get spotted 20 plus points. Philadelphia has been 20-plus point dogs twice during that span (+20 at San Antonio and +21 at Oklahoma City) and have failed to cover both times.

The 76ers open as 20.5-point dogs when they visit Houston Thursday.

Two of top Over plays in NBA meet with Lakers-Bucks

Though both are eliminated from playoff contention, the Los Angeles Lakers and Milwaukee Bucks do have something that will make bettors happy. The Lakers and Bucks are No. 2 and No. 6 in going over the total in their games respectively. Also, in the last four meetings in Milwaukee, these teams have gone over the total.

The Lakers have gone over in 11 of their past 15 games overall and have an O/U record of 12-4 in their past 16 on the road.

The Bucks, coming off an extended road trip, are also looking at solid over trends. In the nine home games following a road trip of a week or more, the Bucks are 7-0-2 O/U.

The opening total for the Lakers and Bucks is 217, the largest on the NBA board Thursday.

Clippers open as small road faves at Mavs

The San Antonio Spurs might be the hottest team in the Association, but the Los Angeles Clippers aren't too far behind.

The Clips had an 11-game winning streak snapped at the Denver Nuggets back on March 17, but they take a modest two-game streak into Dallas Thursday night.

Books have opened the Clips as small 1-point road faves for the matchup, but Lob City failed to cover at Dallas as 2.5-point faves back on Jan. 15. The Clippers are 2-0 straight up versus the Mavs this season, but are 1-1 against the spread.

Clippers, Mavs clash

March 27, 2014

Los Angeles Clippers (50-22) at Dallas Mavericks (43-29)

Sportsbook.ag Line: Los Angeles -1, Total: 212

The Clippers continue their five-game road-trip when they visit the Mavericks on Thursday night.

Los Angeles has been the hottest team in the NBA over the past month and is 13-2 SU (9-5-1 ATS) since Feb. 23. Also during its current hot streak, the club has seen the total go under in 12 of its past 13 contests. The Clippers were unable to handle the Pelicans on Wednesday night on the road though, losing 98-96 as 7.5-point favorites. Their league-best offense shot only 41.3% FG and converted just 17-of-28 (61%) from the charity stripe.

Dallas has also been playing solid basketball of late, winning SU in five of its past seven games (4-3 ATS), and is coming off a huge overtime win against the Thunder on Tuesday. Dallas rallied from a five-point deficit heading into the fourth quarter to force overtime then pulled away in the extra period; outscoring the Thunder 17-8 to secure a 128-119 victory as three-point underdogs.

The Clippers should not be overly concerned in continuing their five-game road trip, as they have gone 19-16 SU (21-13 ATS) away from home this season. The Mavericks have been very good at home though, compiling a 24-12 SU record, but going only 17-19 ATS.

This game will be the third time these teams have faced each other since the beginning of January as L.A. has been able to come away with a win in each game, one away and one at home, while being unable to cover the spread in the latter. They won the barnburner by a score of 129-127, as each team shot better than 50% from the field, but did not cover the five-point spread at home.

Going back three seasons, the Clippers hold a 6-2 SU edge (4-3-1 ATS) in this series, but were not always so talented, and are only 20-44 SU (28-32-4 ATS) since 1996. Los Angeles has been a solid bet ATS this season with a 39-32 record (55%) but will be faced with the 31-14 ATS record that the Mavericks have put together over the past two seasons when the line is between +3 and -3.

Injuries should not play too much of a factor in this meeting, as the Clippers continue to be without the services of SG J.J. Redick (hip). PG Jose Calderon (face) is probable after playing for Dallas on Tuesday.

The Clippers' offense has been prolific this season and is the best in the NBA with 107.4 PPG. Their 96 points scored in their loss to New Orleans on Wednesday is only the second time they have scored less than 100 points over their past 15 games. They also are efficient in their scoring, hitting 47.5% FG (4th in league) this season. The defense has not been quite as good though, allowing opponents to score 100.3 PPG (13th in league).

PG Chris Paul (18.5 PPG, 11.0 APG, 2.5 SPG) is coming off his worst shooting performance in recent memory when he failed to hit a shot from the field (0-for-12 FG) while scoring two points with 12 assists against the Pelicans. He will hope to rebound against a Dallas team which he has averaged 21.7 PPG (52% FG), 8.9 APG and 2.4 SPG against over 27 career games.

PF Blake Griffin (24.3 PPG, 9.7 RPG) has scored at least 20 points in each of his past 31 contests while increasing his assists (5.6 APG) and blocks (1.8 BPG) over the past five games. He should have no problem hitting for 20 points again as he has netted 24.0 PPG (41% FG) to go along with 11.0 RPG and 6.5 APG against the Mavericks in two games this season.

C DeAndre Jordan (10.1 PPG, 13.7 RPG, 2.4 BPG) currently leads the league in rebounds and shooting (66.6% FG), but has failed to break into double-digit points in any of his past four games. His two contests against Dallas this season have been spectacular, as he has scored 16.0 PPG (70% FG) with 15.5 RPG and 2.5 BPG.

With 128 points against the Thunder on Tuesday night, the Mavericks once again proved they can keep up offensively with anybody in the league, averaging 105.0 PPG (8th in NBA) this season. They have actually improved on that number over their past five games, getting 114.0 PPG (47% FG) in that time while allowing their opponents to score 108.8 PPG (45% FG); a number a bit higher than the 102.5 PPG (10th-worst in league) they are giving up on the season.

PF Dirk Nowitzki (21.4 PPG, 6.1 RPG) rebounded from one of his worst games of the season on Sunday, when he went 2-for-12 from the field, scoring 32 points (11-of-23 FG) to go along with 10 rebounds, six assists and four steals against Oklahoma City on Tuesday. He’s had a long career against the Clippers (50 games, 48 starts), averaging 21.3 PPG (47% FG) and 7.3 RPG.

SG Monta Ellis (19.0 PPG, 5.7 APG, 1.8 SPG) has scored 22+ points in three of his past five contests, but has managed only 13.0 PPG (48% FG) in two games against L.A. this season. He did dish out 11.0 APG and grab 3.0 SPG in those games though, and has done very well (17.9 PPG, 6.4 APG, 1.5 SPG) over 23 career games (20 starts) against them.

PG Jose Calderon (11.5 PPG, 4.8 APG) left Sunday’s game in the first minute after a blow to the face, but bounced back nicely on Tuesday, hitting 7-of-10 shots from the field, including 6-for-9 from long range, while finishing with 22 points and eight assists. He has played 16 career games (13 starts) against Los Angeles, dropping 11.3 PPG (49% FG) with 6.5 APG.

NBA roundup: Injury ends season for Bucks' Ilyasova
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Milwaukee forward Ersan Ilyasova will miss the remainder of the season with a right ankle injury, just the latest in a long season of losses for the Bucks.

The Bucks, who entered play Thursday with an NBA-low 13 victories, said Ilyasova was examined by Dr. Richard Ferkel, a foot and ankle specialist who recommended the 26-year-old opt for rest and begin a rehabilitation program to strengthen his ankle rather than undergo surgery.

The injury first limited Ilyasova during preseason games and he sat out Monday's loss to the Los Angeles Clippers. He averaged 11.2 points, 6.2 rebounds and 1.3 assists in 55 games.

---Los Angeles Lakers center Pau Gasol is not on the team's two-game road trip because of symptoms related to his bout of vertigo over the weekend.

Gasol visited ear, nose and throat specialist Dr. John Rehm and it was determined to keep Gasol back in Los Angeles for rest and recovery. Gasol is officially being listed as day to day, although he has not been cleared for basketball activities after leaving Sunday's 103-94 win over the Orlando Magic because of dizziness and nausea and spending the night in the hospital after receiving three liters of fluids through an IV, according to ESPN.com.

---The Philadelphia 76ers signed forward James Nunnally to a second 10-day contract Thursday.

Originally signed March 17 as a call up from the NBA Development League, the 6-foot-7 Nunnally has averaged 2.2 points and 1.0 rebounds in five games for Philadelphia. He had eight points, two steals and a blocked shot against the Chicago Bulls on March 19.

He was selected as a D-League All-Star, averaging 18.1 points, 4.5 rebounds and 3.5 assists in 35 games for the Bakersfield Jam and the Texas Legends.

Grizzlies at Warriors: What bettors need to know
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Memphis Grizzlies at Golden State Warriors

The Memphis Grizzlies are one of several team nipping at the heels of the Golden State Warriors in the race for playoff positioning. The Warriors will try to put some of their off-court problems behind them and maintain their grip on the No. 6 spot when they host the Grizzlies on Friday. Golden State coach Mark Jackson reassigned assistant Brian Scalabrine to the D-League early this week - the second time in as many seasons he has reportedly had trouble with assistants.

The Warriors and the Grizzlies are locked in a five-team battle for the last four spots in the Western Conference now that No. 5 Portland has drifted back to the pack. Memphis is one game behind Golden State and a half-game clear of surging Phoenix with the Dallas Mavericks in the mix as well. The Warriors have been off since a 99-90 home loss to a San Antonio Spurs team that did not play Tim Duncan or Manu Ginobili, after which Jackson held a 30-minute meeting with his assistants. Scalabrine’s demotion was announced on Tuesday due to what Jackson termed a “difference in philosophies.”

TV:
10:30 p.m. ET, SportSouth (Memphis), CSN Bay Area (Golden State)

ABOUT THE GRIZZLIES (43-28):
Memphis started turning it on in mid-February and is 16-5 over its last 21 games while leaning on its defense. The Grizzlies have not allowed an opponent to reach 100 points since Mar. 5 and are surrendering an average of 84 points over the last six contests while going 5-1 in that span. Memphis began a five-game road trip by battling back from a 16-point deficit to secure a 91-87 victory over the Utah Jazz on Wednesday. The Grizzlies get shots at improving their positioning in the West against Golden State and Portland before taking on Denver and Minnesota on the trip.

ABOUT THE WARRIORS (44-27):
Golden State had a three-game winning streak come to an end with the loss to the Spurs but is 13-5 since the All-Star break and is still one of the better teams in the West when healthy. “We’re still playing pretty good basketball,” Stephen Curry told reporters. “We want, obviously, to protect homecourt, that’s the mission the rest of the way. But we’re feeling pretty good and we’re not going to get discouraged. This is a great basketball team that’s got great things in mind.” The Warriors will play six of their final 11 games at home, including two more on the current homestand.

TRENDS:

* Grizzlies are 11-2-1 ATS in their last 14 games vs. a team with a winning % above .600.
* Warriors are 1-5 ATS in their last six games overall.
* Road team is 8-2 ATS in the last 10 meetings.
* Under is 7-1 in Grizzlies last eight overall.

BUZZER BEATERS:

1. Warriors F Andre Iguodala (knee) is expected to return from a three-game absence.

2. Memphis had taken 11 straight in the series before Golden State secured a 108-82 road win on Dec. 7.

3. Curry is averaging 27.6 points while shooting 48.6 percent from 3-point range in the last five games.
