LEADING OFF: Chapman joins Cubs; Mets and Cards play 2
July 26, 2016

A look at what's happening all around the majors today:

BULLPEN BOOST

One day after a blockbuster trade, star closer Aroldis Chapman is expected to join the major league-leading Chicago Cubs for their game at the crosstown White Sox. Chasing their first World Series title since 1908, the Cubs addressed one of their few weaknesses Monday by sending pitcher Adam Warren and three minor league prospects to the New York Yankees for Chapman, a dominant reliever with a fastball that tops 100 mph. ''This is a game-changer,'' Cubs president of baseball operations Theo Epstein said.

LET'S PLAY 2

Following a rainout Monday night, the Mets and Cardinals play a single-admission doubleheader at Citi Field. It was a timely postponement for St. Louis, which didn't arrive in New York until 8:30 a.m. Monday because of travel delays following a nationally televised night game. Monday's scheduled starters, St. Louis' Carlos Martinez (9-6, 2.83 ERA) and New York's Noah Syndergaard (9-4, 2.43), will pitch the first game before Jaime Garcia (7-6, 3.98) faces Bartolo Colon (8-5, 3.48) in the nightcap.

UNBEATABLE BIRD

Chris Tillman (14-2, 3.18 ERA) tries to become the first 15-game winner in the majors when Baltimore hosts Colorado. Tillman is tied with White Sox ace Chris Sale at 14 victories, two shy of his career high set in 2013. Tillman has won four straight starts, all behind seven innings of one-run ball. The Rockies counter with Chad Bettis (8-6, 5.31), who is 4-1 in his last eight starts.

WRIGHT AT THE TOP

AL ERA leader Steven Wright (12-5, 2.67) tests the Tigers with his knuckleball when the Red Sox play host at Fenway Park. The 31-year-old All-Star has won his past four starts and is coming off eight dominant innings in a 13-2 win over Minnesota. Mike Pelfrey (3-9, 4.78) is up for Detroit.

ALL THE WAY BACK

Tyler Skaggs makes his first start in almost two years when the Angels visit Kansas City. The 25-year-old lefty had Tommy John surgery in 2014 and hasn't pitched in the majors since. He was sharp during his minor league rehab assignment, posting a 1.60 ERA in nine starts with 53 strikeouts over 39 1/3 innings. Skaggs is 8-11 with a 4.72 ERA in 31 major league starts.

TRADE BAIT?

Chris Archer (5-13, 4.60 ERA) might be auditioning for contending teams when the Rays right-hander pitches against the Dodgers. The 27-year-old has been the subject of trade speculation despite a disappointing season, although he's coming off one of his best starts this year, pitching six innings of two-run ball with 11 strikeouts in an 11-3 win at Colorado. Bud Norris (5-9, 4.56) goes for Los Angeles.

SHIELDS BACK UP

Resurgent righty James Shields leads the White Sox against the Cubs. Shields allowed 22 runs in his first 8 2/3 innings with Chicago following a trade from San Diego, but has a 2.52 ERA over his last six outings. White Sox hitters, however, have totaled one run in his past three starts while Shields has gone 0-3 despite a 2.08 ERA.

ICHIRO UPDATE

Miami outfielder Ichiro Suzuki grounded out in his only at-bat Monday - a pinch-hit appearance in the eighth - to remain at 2,996 career hits.

Hottest team: Yankees (7-3 last 10)

New York may be sellers at the trade deadline, but the Bronx Bombers are playing solid baseball towards the end of July. The Yankees sold off closer Aroldis Chapman to the Cubs on Monday, but came out with a 2-1 victory at Houston as a +135 road underdog. During this winning stretch, the Yankees have faced the Red Sox, Orioles, Giants, and Astros, which is a brutal schedule, but Joe Girardi’s club has allowed two runs or less eight times. CC Sabathia takes the mound for New York tonight, as the southpaw has given up at least four earned runs in six consecutive starts.

Coldest team: Giants (2-8 last 10)

Heading home didn’t help San Francisco, who returned to AT&T Park following a dreadful 1-7 road trip on Monday only to lose to last-place Cincinnati, 7-5. The Giants plated six runs in their three-game series against the Yankees, but couldn’t hold onto a 5-4 lead in last night’s defeat to the Reds. The loss snapped a four-game winning streak at AT&T Park, although it was San Francisco’s first home game since the night before the All-Star break. After Jake Peavy failed to win last night, the Giants turn to another struggling hurler this evening as Matt Cain heads to the hill. Cain owns a 1-6 record and 5.88 ERA, while the Giants have put together a 2-4 mark his last six home outings.

Hottest pitcher: Chris Tillman, Orioles (14-2, 3.18 ERA)

Baltimore continued its winning ways at home with its second consecutive walk-off victory on Monday to edge Colorado in extra innings. The Orioles send out Cy Young sleeper Tillman to the mound tonight as Baltimore has compiled a ridiculous 18-3 mark when he starts this season, including 12-0 at Camden Yards. Tillman has allowed exactly one earned run in each of his last four starts (all wins), while tossing seven innings in each of those outings.

Coldest pitcher: Matt Garza, Brewers (1-4, 5.94 ERA)

To be fair, six of Garza’s last seven starts this season have come away from Miller Park, which is no easy task. However, the Brewers’ right-hander has allowed at least four earned runs in five consecutive starts, while Milwaukee is 0-4 in his past four trips to the mound. Milwaukee topped Arizona in Monday’s series opener, but the Brewers own a 1-7 record in their past eight games off a victory. Garza is listed as a favorite for the first time this season, as the Brewers put together a 2-4 mark in his six outings as a home favorite in 2015.

Biggest UNDER run: Orioles (13-0 last 13)

Baltimore keeps cashing those ‘under’ tickets following a 3-2 win over Colorado on Monday. The O’s last hit an ‘over’ on July 8 in a 9-5 defeat to the Angels as the Baltimore staff has allowed three runs or less in five consecutive games. Chris Tillman has finished ‘under’ the total in four straight starts for Baltimore, while Colorado right-hander Chad Bettis has compiled a 3-1 mark to the ‘under’ in his past four outings away from Coors Field. The Rockies have put together a healthy 8-2 run to the ‘under’ in their last 10 road contests, while scoring two runs or less in their past seven away defeats.

Biggest OVER run: Dodgers (6-1 last seven)

Los Angeles returns home for the first time since prior to the All-Star break following a 5-4 road swing. The Dodgers scored plenty of runs in their final two victories at St. Louis, putting up 16 runs, while plating at least six runs in all five wins on the trip. Los Angeles opens an interleague series with Tampa Bay, as right-hander Bud Norris has seen the ‘over’ cash in each of his last three starts. Tampa Bay is currently on a three-game streak to the ‘under,’ while tonight’s starter Chris Archer has eclipsed the ‘over’ in four of his past five road outings since the start of June.

Matchup to watch: Mariners vs. Pirates

Seattle and Pittsburgh begin a two-game interleague series at PNC Park as both teams are trying to make for Wild Card spots. The Mariners picked up a rare road series victory at Toronto this past weekend, while Pittsburgh is coming off its second straight home series win over Philadelphia. Felix Hernandez makes his second start off the disabled list for Seattle, looking to bounce back after allowing five earned runs in his last outing against the White Sox. Francisco Liriano counters for Pittsburgh, coming off a 13-strikeout performance in a 5-3 home triumph over the Brewers. The Mariners have compiled a 4-1 road record in interleague play, while the Pirates have slumped to a 1-4 mark against AL opponents at home.

Betcha didn’t know: The Nationals have performed well in interleague action, posting a 9-3 record against AL competition. Washington travels to Cleveland in a battle of division leaders tonight at Progressive Field as the Indians return home after getting swept by the Orioles this past weekend. The Indians hope to get on track with Danny Salazar on the mound, as Cleveland has won six of his last seven home outings.

Biggest public favorite: Blue Jays (-250) vs. Padres

Biggest public underdog: Mariners (+100) at Pirates

Biggest line move: Twins (-185 to -200) vs. Braves

White Sox ace Sale to start Thursday at Cubs
July 26, 2016

CHICAGO (AP) White Sox ace Chris Sale told MLB.com on Monday he got upset with the team when he felt it placed more emphasis on a promotion than winning.

Sale will start Thursday against the crosstown Cubs in his first appearance since the ace left-hander was punished by the team for destroying collared throwback uniforms it was scheduled to wear.

''I'm going to show up on Thursday and do what I've always done. That's get ready to play baseball and put everything I got into winning that game,'' Sale told the website . ''I know my teammates are, too. So that's all that matters to me. It's unfortunate it got to this point.''

Speaking before Monday night's 5-4 victory over the Cubs, manager Robin Ventura said he doesn't think he needs to meet with Sale before the outing at Wrigley Field.

''Not necessarily. He's going to pitch,'' Ventura said. ''That's what he does.''

The 27-year-old Sale was scratched from his scheduled start Saturday night against Detroit and sent home after he cut up an unknown number of jerseys before the game. The 1976-style jerseys were navy and sported unusual collars on a hot and humid night. Sale called the uniforms ''uncomfortable and unorthodox.''

''When I saw that there was something in the way of that 100 percent winning mentality, I had an issue,'' Sale said in the interview with MLB.com. ''I tried to bring it up and say, `Hey listen, these are my thoughts and concerns,' and they got pushed away because of the business deal that was set in place. I'll never understand why we need to do something on the business side on the field that might impede us winning a game.''

The suspension cost Sale $250,000 of his $9.15 million salary. He also was fined about $12,700 - the cost of the destroyed jerseys - according to a person familiar with the penalty. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because no statements were authorized.

''Robin is the one who has to fight for us in that department,'' Sale said. ''If the players don't feel comfortable 100 percent about what we are doing to win the game, and we have an easy fix - it was as easy as hanging up another jersey and everyone was fine. For them to put business first over winning, that's when I lost it.''

Sale apologized to fans that went to Saturday's game to see him pitch, but stood by his decision to protest the throwback jerseys.

''I have regret, because I play 33 times a year at most in the regular season. So I put a lot of emphasis on when I play and I take a lot of pride in work that I do,'' Sale said. ''When I can't or don't do that, yeah, I have disappointment in myself for not being there for my guys.

''Do I regret standing up for what I believe in? Absolutely not. Do I regret saying business should not be first before winning? Absolutely not.''

Sale is 14-3 with a 3.18 ERA this year. There is a possibility he could be traded before the Aug. 1 non-waiver deadline, but Sale told MLB.com he doesn't want to be dealt. It would take quite an offer to get the White Sox to move him.

Ventura also announced that right-hander Anthony Ranaudo, who was promoted from Triple-A Charlotte on Sunday to take Sale's spot on the roster, will start Wednesday against the Cubs. Right-hander Jacob Turner, who allowed four runs and five hits in 3 1/3 innings in his last start Friday against Detroit, will move to the bullpen.

A-Rod benched for a third straight game, sits vs LHP
July 25, 2016

HOUSTON (AP) Alex Rodriguez was out of the lineup for a third straight game Monday night against the Houston Astros as he remains mired in a slump.

Yankees manager Joe Girardi said Astros left-hander Dallas Keuchel has been tough on Rodriguez, but the decision was more to keep Carlos Beltran in the lineup. Beltran has hit .305 this season with 21 home runs and 62 RBIs entering Monday.

Rodriguez came into Monday 4 for 31 with one home run in July and batting .206 this season with nine home runs and 29 RBIs. He's been a regular in the lineup against left-handers and had played more against righties since the All-Star break.

Girardi says Rodriguez's ''time's going to come,'' and Rodriguez says he is ''optimistic about the future.'' Rodriguez says he thinks he has fixed a mechanical flaw that hurt him over the first two months of the season.

CLEVELAND (AP) Francisco Lindor pushed an RBI single through Washington's drawn-in infield with one out in the ninth inning, and the Cleveland Indians rallied for three runs in their final at-bat to stun the Washington Nationals 7-6 on Tuesday night in a matchup of first-place teams with sights on October.

Down two runs and three outs from their losing streak reaching a season-high four games, the Indians rallied against closer Jonathan Papelbon (2-4), who did not get an out before he was pulled by manager Dusty Baker.

With the bases loaded, Lindor fisted his base hit into right field and danced his way up the first-base line as the Indians celebrated an improbable victory.

Bryan Shaw (2-4) got two outs in the ninth and picked up the win as Cleveland won its first home game since July 10.

Anthony Rendon hit a two-run homer and Wilson Ramos added a solo shot for the NL East-leading Nationals, just 4-6 since the All-Star break.

CARDINALS 3, METS 2, 1ST GAME

METS 3, CARDINALS 1, 2ND GAME

NEW YORK (AP) - Bartolo Colon pitched three-hit ball for seven sharp innings and New York overcame another home run by Jedd Gyorko to beat St. Louis for a doubleheader split.

Gyorko homered in both ends and has connected seven times in nine games. His two-run shot helped the Cardinals win the opener 3-2.

Colon (9-5) struck out eight and walked none. After Gyorko homered in the second and Alberto Rosario doubled in the third, Colon set down 14 of his final 15 batters.

Jeurys Familia closed for his 36th save this year and 52nd in a row during the regular season.

Asdrubal Cabrera ended his 0-for-32 rut with runners in scoring position with an RBI double and added a sacrifice fly off Jaime Garcia (7-7). Wilmer Flores doubled and singled twice.

In the opener, Gyorko homered off Noah Syndergaard (9-5) for a 3-0 lead.

Carlos Martinez (10-6) gave up a two-run homer to Rene Rivera and left after the fifth inning. Three relievers finished, with Seung Hwan Oh getting his fifth save.

BLUE JAYS 7, PADRES 6, 12 INNINGS

TORONTO (AP) - Devon Travis scored the winning run on a wild pitch, and Toronto rallied for three runs in the 12th inning to beat San Diego.

Matt Kemp put the Padres in front with a two-run homer off Jesse Chavez (1-2) in the top of the 12th, but San Diego's bullpen couldn't hold the lead.

Travis drew a 14-pitch walk to load the bases, bringing Paul Clemens on in relief of Carlos Villanueva (1-2). Clemens walked Jose Bautista to make it 6-5 before Josh Donaldson tied it with a fielder's choice grounder.

With Edwin Encarnacion batting, a pitch bounced away from catcher Derek Norris, and Travis slid in just ahead of the tag as his teammates stormed out of the dugout to celebrate.

It was the second key run to score on a wild pitch: Toronto catcher Russell Martin made it 4-all when he scored on Brad Hand's wild pitch in the seventh.

Donaldson hit a two-run homer and Justin Smoak had a solo shot for the Blue Jays.

Alex Dickerson hit a three-run shot, his third homer in three games, as San Diego extended its club-record streak of games with at least one home run to 24. It's the longest run since the 2002 Texas Rangers set a major league record by homering in 27 straight.

YANKEES 6, ASTROS 3

HOUSTON (AP) - CC Sabathia allowed two runs in 6 2/3 innings to get back on track after a tough stretch and help New York over Houston.

Sabathia (6-8) allowed four hits and struck out five to pick up his first win since June 16 after going 0-4 and allowing 31 runs - 29 earned - combined in his past six starts.

Sabathia allowed a solo home run to Marwin Gonzalez in the first inning. But the big lefty settled in after that, allowing only one single over the next five innings.

The Yankees built a five-run lead, thanks in part to a two-run triple by Aaron Hicks, by the time Evan Gattis homered to start Houston's seventh and cut it to 6-2.

Andrew Miller allowed one hit in a scoreless ninth for his second save since Aroldis Chapman was traded Monday and ninth overall.

Houston starter Doug Fister (10-7) allowed nine hits and six runs, which both tied season highs, in 4 2/3 innings.

Gonzalez added a solo homer in the eighth for his first career multihomer game.

WHITE SOX 3, CUBS 0

CHICAGO (AP) - James Shields allowed four singles in 7 2/3 innings, Adam Eaton homered and the White Sox stayed unbeaten since Chris Sale's suspension.

The Cubs lost their second straight and never got to use new closer Aroldis Chapman hours after he joined the team and struggled answering questions related to an altercation last year with his girlfriend.

Shields (5-12) struck out five and continued an impressive turnaround from a terrible first three starts after being acquired from San Diego last month. Nate Jones finished the eighth and David Robertson worked the ninth for his 24th save in the White Sox's fourth straight win since their ace was sent home for destroying throwback jerseys.

Jose Abreu had two hits, including an RBI single in the first off Kyle Hendricks (9-7) that ended his streak of 22 2/3 innings without allowing an earned run.

ROCKIES 6, ORIOLES 3

BALTIMORE (AP) - Carlos Gonzalez and Trevor Story had two RBIs apiece in a four-run third inning, and Colorado beat Chris Tillman to end Baltimore's five-game winning streak.

Seeking to become the first 15-game winner in the majors, Tillman (14-3) gave up six runs and nine hits in five innings.

Adam Jones homered for the Orioles, who were 21-4 at home since the beginning of June. Despite the loss, Baltimore still owns the AL's best record.

Chad Bettis (9-6) won his third straight start, allowing two runs, four hits and three walks in six innings. Colorado is 8-1 in his last nine outings.

Rookie Carlos Estevez got three outs for his ninth save.

TIGERS 9, RED SOX 8

BOSTON (AP) - Miguel Cabrera hit a two-run home run, Jarrod Saltalamacchia and Tyler Collins each had a pair of RBIs and Detroit Tigers roughed up knuckleballer Steven Wright to beat Boston.

Detroit and Boston combined for 22 hits. Alex Wilson (1-0) got the victory, and Francisco Rodriguez closed for his 29th save.

David Ortiz had a three-run home run, but Boston's offense didn't have enough to offset a rare poor outing by Wright, who gave up nine hits and eight runs over 4 2/3 innings. Wright was leading the AL in ERA entering Tuesday.

Robbie Ross Jr. (1-2) got the loss.

ANGELS 13, ROYALS 0

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - Tyler Skaggs pitched seven innings in his first big league start in two years and Yunel Escobar went 5 for 5 to help the Angels to the runaway win.

Kole Calhoun drove in four runs and Carlos Perez had four hits, including a home run. Mike Trout drove in three runs, and Johnny Giavotella had three hits, including two doubles, and scored three runs.

Escobar matched a career high for hits and the Angels collected 22 overall, equaling their season best.

Skaggs (1-0), who had elbow surgery in August 2014, allowed three singles, struck out five and walked one.

Royals right-hander Dillon Gee (3-4) was charged with five runs and 10 hits in five-plus innings.

The Royals have dropped six of seven to fall three games below .500 for the first time this season.

MARINERS 7, PIRATES 4

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Seattle ace Felix Hernandez settled down after a shaky start and picked up his first victory in more than two months.

Hernandez (5-4) gave up four runs in six innings in his first win since May 21. Steve Cishek worked a perfect ninth for his 24th save.

Kyle Seager's three hits for Seattle included his 20th home run, and Franklin Gutierrez added his 10th off Francisco Liriano (6-10).

Liriano hit his second career home run, a 416-foot shot to center off Hernandez in the second inning. Gregory Polanco collected a season-high four hits, including his 13th homer, but the Pirates went 1 for 13 with runners in scoring position.

MARLINS 5, PHILLIES 0

MIAMI (AP) - Tom Koehler pitched six innings of three-hit ball, helping Miami to the win.

Ichiro Suzuki made his first start in five games and went 1 for 5, giving him 2,997 career hits. He also stole a base and scored a run.

Giancarlo Stanton and Adeiny Hechavarria each drove in two runs for the Marlins, who were shut out in their previous two games.

Philadelphia right-hander Jerad Eickhoff (6-12) allowed one run and five hits in seven innings. He struck out eight and walked one.

Koehler (8-8) is 2-1 with a 1.29 ERA in four starts against the Phillies this season.

BRAVES 2, TWINS 0

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Lucas Harrell pitched six innings, Adonis Garcia homered and the Braves beat the Twins in a matchup of the worst teams in the majors.

This untimely meeting came nearly 25 years after the Twins beat the Braves in a World Series that's often been mentioned among the most dramatic in history. The 1991 anniversary celebration was marked by Gene Larkin, who had the winning hit in the 10th inning of Game 7, throwing the ceremonial first pitch.

A.J. Pierzynski doubled and scored against his original team. Behind the plate, he helped guide Harrell (2-2) to his first scoreless start in the majors since June 9, 2013.

Minnesota right-hander Ervin Santana (3-9) had little help while logging his second complete game in his last four turns.

GIANTS 9, REDS 7

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - Matt Cain hit a three-run homer during his first win in more than two months, leading San Francisco past Cincinnati.

Brandon Crawford had three hits and two RBIs, and Buster Posey and Denard Span added two hits apiece for the Giants. San Francisco won for only the second time since the All-Star break.

It had been longer than that for Cain (2-6), who had been winless since May 21.

The former Giants ace retired nine of his first 10 batters but quickly wore down and left in the sixth after giving up the first of two homers by Adam Duvall, who has five in the past four games.

Joey Votto and Jay Bruce also homered for the Reds. Cody Reed (0-5) allowed six runs over five innings.

Cain's seventh career home run was his first since July 21, 2012.

Santiago Casilla closed for his 22nd save.

ATHLETICS 6, RANGERS 3

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) - Sonny Gray had a season-high eight strikeouts and overcame one volatile inning, and Josh Reddick drove in three runs as Oakland beat Texas.

Reddick's two-run shot in the fourth was one of three home runs by the A's. Coco Crisp and Marcus Semien also went deep.

Gray (5-9) pitched six innings and the five hits he allowed came against consecutive Texas batters to start the fifth, when top prospect Joey Gallo homered in his first start this season for the Rangers.

The A's won for the fourth time in five games. AL West-leading Texas had its three-game winning streak snapped.

Nick Martinez (1-3) gave up five runs and six hits while pitching into the fifth after being recalled from the minors.

DODGERS 3, RAYS 2

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Bud Norris pitched shutout ball into the seventh inning and Los Angeles held off Tampa Bay.

Norris (6-9) allowed two hits and walked two in 6 1/3 innings, his longest outing since he was acquired in a June 30 trade with Atlanta. Yasmani Grandal hit a leadoff homer in the seventh as the Dodgers won for the fourth time in five games.

Corey Seager and Justin Turner hit consecutive RBI singles in the third.

Tampa Bay scored twice in the eighth, but the rally fizzled. Kenley Jansen worked the ninth for his 30th save in 35 chances.

Rays right-hander Chris Archer (5-14), a potential trade target for contenders ahead of Monday's deadline, struck out eight in seven solid innings. He was charged with three runs, one earned, and four hits.

BREWERS 9, DIAMONDBACKS 4

MILWAUKEE (AP) - Scooter Gennett and Jonathan Villar each hit a two-run single in a five-run eighth inning that lifted Milwaukee over Arizona.

With the score tied at 4, the Brewers batted around and broke the game open on three hits and four walks against the Diamondbacks' bullpen.

Tyler Thornburg (4-4) won in relief of Matt Garza. Daniel Hudson (1-2) took the loss.

Armadillo Sports is in the process of re-working the website. It kinda looks like the daily Six Pack is history.

It appears we will still have the daily List of 13 but it's been hung on Monday since the format change.

The baseball page is still on Monday, too.

When things catch up to Wednesday, I'll add them. Six Pack/List of 13 will be added into this reply.

LEADING OFF: 5 day games, Strasburg vs Carrasco
July 27, 2016

A look at what's happening all around the majors today:

LUNCH-HOUR HARDBALL

Four games are set to start at 1:35 p.m. EDT or earlier, including Nationals-Indians and Phillies-Marlins at 12:10, Padres-Blue Jays at 12:37 and Tigers-Red Sox at 1:35. The West Coast gets to play in the sun, too, with Rays-Dodgers starting at 3:10 p.m. EDT and Reds-Giants at 3:45.

STRASBURG VS CARRASCO

Nationals ace Stephen Strasburg (13-1, 2.83) seeks a bounce back against Cleveland and right-hander Carlos Carrasco (7-3, 2.31) after suffering his first loss in his last start. Strasburg allowed six runs in six innings in a 6-3 defeat to the Dodgers after winning his previous three outings in dominant fashion. Carrasco threw six scoreless innings and only allowed one hit in an 11-4 victory over Kansas City in his last start.

LONG, STRANGE TRIP

Following a circuitous jaunt to the Canadian border, new Toronto outfielder Melvin Upton Jr. is expected to get his first start for the Blue Jays against San Diego. Upton was traded by the Padres on Tuesday when they were already in Toronto, but joining his new team was much more complicated than walking across the field. Requiring a work visa to enter Canada as a member of the Blue Jays, he drove 1 1/2 hours to Lewiston, New York, and back to Toronto before Tuesday night's game. ''Sat at border patrol for a little while, jumped in the car and came back,'' Upton said. ''It all went pretty smoothly.'' Upton grounded into a fielder's choice as a pinch-hitter Tuesday. He was having a resurgent season with the Padres, batting .256 with 16 homers, 45 RBIs, 46 runs and 20 steals. He's hit three game-ending home runs.

BIRDS OF PREY

St. Louis tries to extend its recent power surge against Logan Verrett (3-6) and the Mets at Citi Field. The Cardinals have homered in 17 consecutive games, their longest streak since a club-record run of 19 games in 2006. They lead the NL in long balls and have already surpassed last season's total of 137. The last time they topped the league was 1998, the Elias Sports Bureau said, when Mark McGwire hit 70 of their 223. Part-time infielder Jedd Gyorko has been a steady power source lately, with seven home runs in nine games.

NEED SOME SUPPORT

Yu Darvish looks for a little help when Texas plays Oakland. Darvish is winless in two starts since coming off the disabled list, but the Rangers have scored only two runs combined for him in those games. The right-hander from Japan struck out 11 in six innings against Kansas City last Friday. He is 1-8 in 10 career starts against the A's. Rookie lefty Sean Manaea makes his fifth start for Oakland since coming off the DL, and in his last three, the A's have scored only one run in his 20 innings.

ICHIRO UPDATE

Ichiro Suzuki made his first start in five games Tuesday and went 1 for 5, giving him 2,997 career hits. He also stole a base and scored a run. He had an extra-base hit taken away in his first at-bat when Peter Bourjos made an impressive catch in right-center.

Hottest team: Yankees (8-2 last 10)

New York continues to make a push towards a potential Wild Card berth in the American League following a pair of impressive showings in Houston the last two nights. After a 2-1 victory over Dallas Keuchel on Monday, the Yankees knocked around Doug Fister in a 6-3 triumph last night behind a solid pitching performance from CC Sabathia. The Yankees have allowed three runs or less in nine of the past 10 contests, while locking up their third straight series victory on Tuesday. Masahiro Tanaka has lost his last two starts to the Astros, but the Yankees own a 7-0 record in his past seven outings since June 17.

Coldest team: Diamondbacks (3-7 last 10)

The Brewers broke open a 4-4 game with the Diamondbacks on Tuesday by scoring five runs in the eighth inning to capture a 9-4 victory. Arizona dropped 1-4 on its current road swing, while giving up at least six runs for the sixth straight game. In the past seven contests, not one Diamondbacks’ starting pitcher has made it out of the sixth inning, taxing an already depleted bullpen. Archie Bradley heads to the mound at Miller Park tonight for Arizona, as the right-hander has received a total of four runs of support in his past three outings with the D-backs going 1-2 in those contests.

Hottest pitcher: Danny Duffy, Royals (6-1, 3.14 ERA)

Kansas City may not make the World Series for the third straight season with the way it has been playing lately, allowing 19 runs in the first two losses of their series to the Angels. The Royals hope to turn around their luck with Duffy taking the hill as the southpaw is unbeaten in his last five starts. Duffy has put together four quality starts in this span, allowing two earned runs or less four times, including tossing 6.2 innings in a 3-1 victory over Texas last Friday. The Royals have yet to be swept at home this season, so Kansas City hopes to keep that streak with a victory tonight.

Coldest pitcher: Gerrit Cole, Pirates (5-6, 2.99 ERA)

In spite of a solid ERA, Cole hasn’t picked up a win since May 20 against the Rockies. Cole spent time on the disabled list with a tricep injury, but Pittsburgh has compiled an 0-5 record in his past five starts since beating Colorado, including a loss as a -240 home favorite against the Phillies his last time out. The Pirates own a 2-5 record in his seven starts at PNC Park this season, as Cole has failed to win in each of his two home interleague starts against the Tigers and Angels as Pittsburgh continues its series with Seattle tonight.

Biggest UNDER run: Orioles (14-0 last 14)

Baltimore saw its five-game winning streak come to a halt in Tuesday’s 6-3 defeat to Colorado, but the Orioles continued their remarkable ‘under’ streak, extending it to 14 in a row. Chris Tillman picked up a rare loss last night, allowing six earned runs in five innings of work, but the game remained ‘under’ the total of 9 ½. To be fair, Baltimore is cashing ‘unders’ recently on high totals with each of the last six games seeing totals of nine or higher. Orioles’ right-hander Dylan Bundy makes his third career start tonight, as he shut down a solid Cleveland lineup in his last outing by scattering five hits in five innings of a 5-1 win and going ‘under’ the total of 9 ½.

Biggest OVER run:
Reds (3-0 last three)

Even though three straight games isn’t a streak that looks impressive, Cincinnati’s offense has picked things up of late. The Reds fell to the Giants last night, 9-7, but Cincinnati managed to score at least six runs for the sixth consecutive contest considering the Reds put up at least six runs only three times in its previous 17 games before this stretch. Cincinnati owns a 9-4 mark to the ‘over’ in its last 13 road games, but keeping that streak alive won’t be easy this afternoon, facing Cy Young candidate Madison Bumgarner and the Giants. Although Bumgarner is winless in his last two starts, he has compiled a fantastic 1.45 ERA in matinee action this season.

Matchup to watch: White Sox vs. Cubs

The “Crosstown Cup” is always entertaining in the Windy City, but the White Sox are taking center-stage after grabbing a pair of home victories over the Cubs. The Sox walked off past the Cubs on Monday, then turned to the suddenly-hot James Shields on Tuesday for a 3-0 shutout of the NL Central leaders.

The series shifts to the North side tonight for the next two games as the Cubs rely on the right arm of Jason Hammel for a victory. Hammel has won two straight starts following six consecutive outings without a victory, as the Cubs own a 6-2 mark in his eight starts at Wrigley Field. The White Sox have slumped to a 1-5 record in their past six road games as Anthony Ranaudo takes the mound. Ranaudo is making his first start with the White Sox, while his last Major League start came last June as a member of the Rangers in a 1-0 defeat to the Dodgers.

Betcha didn’t know:

It’s getaway day for the Red Sox, who travel to the West coast following this afternoon’s contest against the Tigers. Boston tries to avoid the sweep after dropping a 9-8 decision on Tuesday as the Red Sox have yet to be swept in a series this season. In fact, the Sox possess a perfect 5-0 record in the final game of a series when trying to avoid the broom.

Biggest public favorite: Giants (-230) vs. Reds

Biggest public underdog: Tigers (+110) at Red Sox

Biggest line move: Orioles (-145 to -165) vs. Rockies

Bullpen swap: Blue Jays send Storen to Mariners for Benoit
July 27, 2016

TORONTO (AP) Looking to better their bullpen, the Toronto Blue Jays have acquired Joaquin Benoit from the Seattle Mariners for fellow right-hander Drew Storen and cash in a swap of struggling relievers.

The busy Blue Jays announced the trade Tuesday night, minutes after rallying to beat San Diego 7-6 in 12 innings. It was their second deal of the day: Hours earlier, Toronto obtained outfielder Melvin Upton Jr. and cash from the Padres for minor league right-hander Hansel Rodriguez.

Benoit, who turned 39 on Tuesday, is 1-1 with a 5.18 ERA in 26 games this season.

The 28-year-old Storen was designated for assignment Sunday by Toronto after going 1-3 with three saves and a 6.21 ERA in 38 appearances.

Toronto is two games behind first-place Baltimore in the AL East and holds the league's top wild-card spot.
