MLB betting cheat sheet: Interleague Play Takes Center Stage

The headliner will be the “battle for Chicago” with two games taking place on both the North and South side of the city.

Power Sports breaks down the best MLB betting notes so you can handicap every series like a pro this week, including a busy week of interleague action.

Interleague Play Takes Center Stage

Of the 15 series that take place in the first half of the week, seven will be of the Interleague variety. The headliner will be the “battle for Chicago” with two games taking place on both the North and South side of the city.

There will also be four, short two-game series taking place Tuesday-Wednesday. Those are Seattle-Pittsburgh, Washington-Cleveland, Atlanta-Minnesota (yuck!) and Tampa Bay-Los Angeles.

For the record, the American League holds a 106-87 edge in Interleague Games this year.

Seattle could be a team to watch in Pittsburgh as the Mariners are 9-3 vs. the National League in 2016. The A.L. has won Interleague Play every year since 2004. The current .549 win percentage is right in line with the average percentage, year to year, over the last decade.

Rocky Road

On paper, you would seem to heavily favor Baltimore this week against Colorado. The Rockies’ offensive numbers (predictably) dip dramatically outside of Coors Field (they do add a designated hitter here) and the Orioles are now a very-strong 36-14 at Camden Yards after an impressive sweep of Cleveland over the weekend. That’s the best home record in all of baseball.

But there is one interesting note that I’d like to pass along here. Factoring in only road games, the ERA of the much maligned Colorado staff is 3.83, which is actually seventh best overall! The ERA’s of the respective two starting rotations overall are not that different as Baltimore ranks 25th (4.95) while Colorado ranks 28th (5.04).

A big deal here though could be that the Orioles best starter (Chris Tillman) will go Tuesday while the Rockies best starter (Tyler Anderson) won’t be going at all in this series.

Going North

The Blue Jays could use a big boost right now. They just dropped two of three at home to Seattle over the weekend are three games out in the American League East. Still though, they are in Wild Card position.

Personally, I think the team is better than its overall record, but its Interleague record (11-6) remains strong. Those 11 Interleague victories are the most of any team in baseball right now. Were it not for a poor record in one-run games (9-18), this team would probably be winning its division.

I would not be the least bit surprised to see the Jays hammer the Padres this week even though San Diego has been shockingly competitive against San Francisco, St. Louis and Washington since the All-Star Break (5-5 overall).

Pitching Notes

* One of the biggest stories making the rounds right now is the Chris Sale saga in Chicago. The White Sox ace has been suspended for five games due to apparently tearing up a team uniform that he did not wish to wear Saturday. As a result, he will miss the entire series against the Cubs. Some are saying this could be the final nail in the White Sox coffin, which is too bad for a season that started with so much promise (team was 26-13 at one point!). The Sox will be an underdog in every game in this series.

* In the Rockies-Orioles writeup, I mentioned Chris Tillman being Baltimore’s best pitcher. This statement is not up for debate. Tillman has an 18-3 team start record, making him the best pitcher to have bet on in 2016 (+16.2 units) by a fairly comfortable margin. He’s been especially dominant of late by giving up just one run in seven innings in four straight starts (all wins) with only 16 hits allowed.

Hitter Notes

* Now isn’t the best time to talking about Cleveland’s exploits as they just got swept in Baltimore. They scored only six runs total in the three-game series. Looking ahead, the Indians’ 28th place ranking in batting average (.238) and 30th place ranking in on base percentage (.297) in road games doesn’t bode well for them. Thankfully then (for them), they are at home this week against Washington. The Tribe offense is fifth in runs scored at home.

* Teams whose overall offensive numbers could decline this week are Seattle and Tampa Bay as both head to National League Parks and thus will be losing the designated hitter from the lineup. Of those two teams, the Mariners are clearly more likely to absorb the loss of the DH as the Rays are only 25th in runs scored to begin with.

Totals Trend

The Over is 9-2 for San Diego in Interleague Play. Incredibly, those games have averaged 15.3 runs per game.

LEADING OFF: White Sox host Cubs, Arrieta; Giants head home
July 25, 2016

A look at what's happening all around the majors today:

SOUTH SIDE SHOWDOWN

Cubs ace Jake Arrieta (12-4, 2.60 ERA) takes the hill in the opener of a two-game interleague series at the crosstown-rival Chicago White Sox. Arrieta is 2-0 with a 2.75 ERA in three starts against the White Sox as a member of the Cubs. The rested Cubs are in the middle of a five-game trip in which they did not need to board a plane - they took a bus to Milwaukee for their three-game series against the Brewers. Miguel Gonzalez (2-5, 4.41) is up for the White Sox.

BACK BY THE BAY

The Giants return home to face the Reds following a 1-7 road trip. Right-hander Jake Peavy (5-8, 5.15) accounted for one of those seven losses, allowing four runs in six innings in a 4-0 loss to Boston in his last start. Reds right-hander Anthony DeSclafani (5-0, 2.50) has been unbeatable after beginning the season on the disabled list. Last time out, he threw eight innings of two-run ball in a 6-3 win over Atlanta.

RED SOX RE-DO

Drew Pomeranz (8-7, 2.83) makes his second start since being traded to the Red Sox when Boston hosts the Tigers. Pomeranz did not get a decision after allowing five runs over three innings in his first start, against San Francisco. Detroit sends out Justin Verlander (9-6, 3.74), who held Minnesota to a run and two hits over eight innings in a 2-1 loss his last time out.

HARD-NOSE BASEBALL

Cardinals righty Carlos Martinez (9-6, 2.83) faces the New York Mets' Noah Syndergaard (9-4, 2.43). Martinez logged seven innings in a 4-2 win over San Diego in his last start despite suffering a bloody nose.

WELCOME ABOARD, SHIPLEY

Prospect Braden Shipley will make his major league debut for the Diamondbacks in a game at Milwaukee. The 2013 first-round pick has a 3.70 ERA with Triple-A Reno, walking just 22 batters in 119 1/3 innings. Chase Anderson (4-10, 5.50) will pitch for the Brewers.

SUZUKI UPDATE

The Marlins' Ichiro Suzuki, who didn't start during a three-game series against the Mets, struck out as a pinch-hitter in the seventh inning Sunday and remained four hits shy of 3,000.

Monday's Diamond Notes
July 25, 2016

Hottest team: Cubs (7-3 past 10)

The Cubs managed a 5-15 record from May 20 to July 9 to rustle up that old doubt in the minds of even the most faithful north sider supporter. However, order has been restored since the All-Star break, as the Cubs are 7-3 over their past 10 games after taking two of three in Milwaukee this past weekend. The Cubs meet their rivals from the south side, and that usually means good things. The Cubbies are 6-1 in their past seven interleague games, and 10-2 in their past 12 interleague road battles against a team with a losing record. Plus, it's good to have Jake Arrieta on the bump, as the Cubs are 23-4 in his past 27 assignments away from home while going 22-8 in his past 30 against a team with a losing overall mark.

Coldest team:
Brewers (3-8 past 11)

The Brewers lost two of three from the Cubs, and they have now dropped six of their past seven series going 7-13 over the past 20 games. Milwaukee might catch a break with Arizona visiting, as the Diamondbacks have been equally inept lately. The Snakes turn to their top pitching prospect, Braden Shipley, to try and stem the the tide of losing. Arizona as dropped seven of their past eight road games, and they're just 3-15 in their past eight 18 vs. RHP. Milwaukee is 1-4 in their past five at home, 1-6 in their past seven against right-handed starters and 1-5 in Chase Anderson's past six outings. Something's gotta give between Arizona and Milwaukee.

Hottest pitcher
: Justin Verlander, Tigers (9-6, 3.74 ERA)

Verlander's overall numbers aren't particularly impressive, but he is making up for lost time. He is 1-0 with a 1.74 ERA and a 0.97 WHIP with 24 strikeouts and just eight walks over the past 20 2/3 innings. The Tigers are 6-2 in Verlander's past eight starts against a team with a winning overall record, and 5-2 in hisp ast seven road outings against winning teams. While the Tigers are 7-3 in their past 10 against the American League East, the Tigers are only 3-10 in Verlander's past 13 assignments against AL East foes.

Coldest pitcher:
Martin Perez, Texas (7-7, 4.37 ERA)

Perez has been horrid in the month of July, going 0-3 with an 8.34 ERA in four starts in the month, allowing five or more earned runs in each of his past three outings, all losses. Perez posted quality starts in six of seven outings from May 8 to June 9, but he has managed just two over his past seven assignments since. The Rangers have been terrible lately, winning just 3-8 in their past 11 games, and Perez doesn't figure to stem the tide of losing. While the Rangers are a surprising 8-3 in his past 11 outings, they're 0-5 in his past five against teams with a losing overall record.

Biggest UNDER run:
Orioles (12-0 past 12)

The 'under' run for Baltimore has been amazing, one of a handful of impressive streaks. The 'under' is also 10-0 in the past 10 for the Yankees, 1-10-1 in the past 12 for the Mets and 2-8 over the past 10 for the Giants. Suddenly the offense has dried up for a lot of teams. Strong pitching has been the key to Baltimore's amazing under run, as they have allowed three or fewer runs in each of their past four games, and nine of the past 12 outings. They face a Colorado team which has seen the under go 12-4 in their past 16 against right-handed starting pitching, and 7-2 in their past nine road outings.

Biggest OVER run:
Cardinals (5-3 past 8)

Offense has been at a premium lately in the majors, as teams appear to have a hangover after the All-Star break. The Cardinals have bucked that trend somewhat, as the 'over' is 5-3 in their past eight games, 5-1 in their past six against National League East teams and 3-1-5 in Martinez's past nine outings against NL East teams. The under is the predominant trend for the Mets, but the over is 4-1 in Noah Syndergaard's past five home outings and 7-2 in his past nine games overall.

Matchup to watch:
Yankees vs. Astros

It's a tale of two teams when the Yankees host the Astros at Minute Maid Park for the series opener Monday. The Yankees took two of three from the contending Giants in interleague play over the weekend, but the Bronx Bombers are still just two games over .500 and expected to be sellers at the July 31 non-waiver trade deadline. The Astros have won four in a row, and they're 11-5 over the past 16 outings to find themselves right in the wild-card mix. New York enters 6-2 in their past eight games overall, but 6-13 in their past 19 road outings against a team with a winning record and 5-12 in their past 17 against a left-handed starter. The Astros are 24-6 in Dallas Keuchel's past 30 home starts, and the Astros are 7-1 in their past eight home games against a team with a winning overall record.

Betcha didn’t know:

The Astros have picked on the weak to get where they are in the standings, going 4-0 in their past four home games against a team with a losing road record. However, they have also handled their business against winning teams, too, especially at home. They're 7-1 in their past eight at Minute Maid Park against winning teams while going 54-23 in their past 77 games overall. The Astros face Michael Pineda, and the Yankes are just 1-5 in his past six road outings against a team with a winning overall record.

Biggest public favorite:
Blue Jays (-255) vs. Padres

Biggest public underdog:
Diamondbacks (+125) at Brewers

Biggest line move:
Blue Jays (-230 to -255) vs. Padres

Can hard-throwing Cabrera challenge Chapman's throne?
July 25, 2016

Aroldis Chapman may finally have some competition for the title of baseball's hardest-throwing pitcher.

Of course, the Cuban left-hander raised the bar even higher over the past week.

Chapman reached 105.1 mph Monday night, matching the fastest pitch since Major League Baseball started tracking speeds in 2008. Chapman - whose stint with the New York Yankees could end at any moment with the trade deadline approaching - threw 13 pitches of at least 104 mph from Monday through Saturday. Nobody in baseball had reached that mark all season until then.

Chapman's fastball has been in a class by itself - to the point that MLB.com has a ''Chapman Filter'' on its Statcast leaderboard in case fans want to view the list of fastest pitches without him included. For the rest of this season, however, he might have some company. Mauricio Cabrera, a 22-year-old right-hander who made his major league debut for the Atlanta Braves in late June, reached 103.8 mph Monday night against Cincinnati.

The 6-foot-3, 245-pound Cabrera is 1-0 with a 2.19 ERA in 12 appearances, although all that power has led to only seven strikeouts in 12 1/3 innings. Cabrera's four-seam fastball averages 100.7 mph, which is actually ahead of Chapman's average four-seamer of 100.5.

MLB rolled out its Statcast system last year, and fans can look up leaderboards for pitch speeds and other interesting categories. The longest home run of the season belongs to Nomar Mazara of Texas (491 feet on May 25), and the highest exit velocity was 123.9 mph off the bat of Giancarlo Stanton on June 9.

That figure didn't come on one of Stanton's prodigious homers, by the way. It came on a double-play grounder.

Seattle's Nelson Cruz has the highest average exit velocity at 95.8 mph, and Philadelphia catcher Cameron Rupp is second at 95.1. Rupp's slugging percentage has jumped from .374 in 2015 to .487 this year.

Here are a few other developments from around baseball:

BUY OR SELL?

The Aug. 1 deadline for trades without waivers is now a week away, and several teams are occupying that shaky middle ground where it's hard to say how aggressive they'll be. The Tigers, Yankees, Mariners, Royals and White Sox are all between four and 6 1/2 games of a wild card in the American League.

In the NL, the situation seems a bit more clear cut, with almost every team either firmly in the hunt for a playoff spot or way behind. The only exception is probably Colorado, which is six games behind a wild card, but the Rockies have a ways to go before establishing themselves as contenders. They've gone 7-3 since the All-Star break against a schedule that included seven games against Atlanta and three against Tampa Bay.

FANTASY FOCUS

The trade deadline often leads to significant upheaval among closer jobs as relievers get dealt. If Chapman is traded, for example, look for save opportunities to start falling Andrew Miller's way again in New York. (That's assuming Miller isn't also dealt.)

LINE OF THE WEEK

Hanley Ramirez homered three times for Boston in an 11-7 victory over San Francisco on Wednesday night. He actually had three home runs by the sixth inning but grounded out to the pitcher in the eighth.

Ramirez has 13 homers on the season after going deep Saturday and Sunday. He's also played in 90 of Boston's 96 games - a significant fact since Ramirez hasn't played more than 128 games in a season since 2012.

Monday's CFL betting preview and odds: Alouettes at Argonauts
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Montreal hopes that the return of quarterback Kevin Glenn, who missed the loss to Hamilton with eye inflammation, can kickstart an offence that is averaging a CFL-low 14 points per game.

Montreal Alouettes at Toronto Argonauts (-5.5, 45.5)

The Toronto Argonauts look to notch their first home win against the Montreal Alouettes in more than five years Monday. Toronto has dropped seven consecutive home games to the Alouettes, including a 34-2 loss last season, and hopes that a switch from Rogers Centre to BMO Field this year, and a 12-day rest between games, can help the Argonauts record their first home victory in the series since Aug. 14, 2010.

Toronto is coming off a 30-20 defeat to the Ottawa Redblacks on July 13 and hopes to beat an East Division rival for the first time this season. The offensively challenged Alouettes failed to score a touchdown in the 31-7 home loss to the Hamilton Tiger-Cats in Week 4. Montreal has dropped two straight games by an average margin of 19.5 points and hopes that the return of quarterback Kevin Glenn, who missed the loss to Hamilton with eye inflammation, can kickstart an offence that is averaging a CFL-low 14 points per game. "We have to find a way to win," Montreal coach and general manager Jim Popp told reporters. "We win in Week 1 and everybody loves you but you lose two in a row and everybody can't stand you."

TV: 7:30 p.m. ET, TSN, RDS, ESPN2

LINE HISTORY:
The Argos opened as 6.5-point favorites at home but the spread has come down a full point to settle at -5.5 at the time of publication of this preview. The total opned at 44.5 and took a full point leap higher to 45.5. Check out the complete line history here.

ABOUT THE ALOUETTES (1-2 SU, 1-2 ATS, 0-3 O/U):
Linebacker Bear Woods, who has recorded 18 tackles and two sacks, missed practice earlier in the week with a knee injury but is expected to recover in time to face Toronto. Wide receiver Nik Lewis has been reportedly fined by Montreal after unleashing a profanity-laced tirade criticizing the team's performance in the loss to Hamilton. "I'm just out here trying to motivate my team to be better," Lewis told reporters. "If we go out and play better this week, then it was worth it."

ABOUT THE ARGONAUTS (2-2 SU, 2-2 ATS, 1-3 O/U):
Defensive back Akwasi Owusu-Ansah will miss the rest of the season with a pectoral injury while safety Jermaine Gabriel suffered his second concussion in four games in the loss to Ottawa and is ruled out for Monday. Cory Greenwood, who is tied for the team lead with 22 tackles, suffered a hand injury against the Redblacks and his status is uncertain. Toronto signed defensive end Michael Buchanan on Wednesday and quarterback Adrian McPherson returns for his second tour of duty in Toronto after being released prior to the 2016 season.

TRENDS:

* Alouettes are 2-8 ATS in their last 10 games overall.
* Argonauts are 0-4 ATS in their last 4 vs. East.
* Under is 5-0 in Alouettes last 5 games in July.
* Under is 11-1 in Argonauts last 12 Monday games.
* Under is 13-3 in the last 16 meetings.

CONSENSUS:
The public is leaning toward the favorite Toronto Argonauts at a rate of 58 percent and Over is getting the majority of the action on the total also at 58 percent.

EXTRA POINTS:

* Toronto has dropped its first two games at BMO Field after spending the previous 27 years at Rogers Centre.
* Montreal has been held to three touchdowns in its first three games.
* The Argonauts and Alouettes have split their last eight meetings.

Sharp baseball bettors are always looking to cash on first five innings wagers

Cleveland's Danny Salazar has surrendered a grand total of just 22 earned runs in innings 1-5 this season, good for an ERA of 2.22.

We live in an era of specialization. From politics to sports to religion to education, any cursory romp through the internet utilizing any of the aforementioned topics as search criteria will no doubt produce hundreds, if not thousands, of various websites and articles designed to answer your wildest query.

Hell, type in the phrase, “Expecting father,” and within seconds you’ll be inundated with dozens of blogs designed solely in the art of educating men who find themselves counting down the days until the birth of their first child.

This era of specialization applies to sports betting as well. Blogs, websites, databases, podcasts, live chats - you name it. Never before in the course of human history has so much information been so readily available at such breakneck speeds.

Which is why this next part may come as a bit of a surprise.

Tell me, for those of us interested in researching MLB first five innings data, where do we go? Where exactly can I find the first five innings records for all Major League Baseball clubs in 2016? What about data in regards to first five innings totals? Are we asking too much?

Simply put, the sports betting and baseball realms of the internet have been asleep at the wheel in regards to this data. And it’s a damn shame because in this age of specialization, nothing fits the bill in regards to baseball wagering quite like beating the bookmakers in the first five innings department.

An aside for the uninitiated: A "first five innings wager" (side or total) is exactly what it sounds like. Instead of betting a full baseball game, your wager is scored at the completion of five innings rather than nine innings (or extra innings). This type of wager appeals to many because it essentially eliminates the necessity of handicapping each team’s bullpen by reducing the game to starting pitcher vs. starting pitcher. Additionally, this type of specialized bet permits for a more focused assessment of integral splits, such as right-handed pitchers vs. left-handed batters and vice versa.

So after a research-filled weekend of scouring the deepest and darkest corners of the internet, here is a breakdown of every MLB team’s record in first five innings bets this season:

2016 MLB FIRST FIVE INNINGS RECORDS

*As of Sunday morning, July 24

1. Chicago Cubs: 54-29-13 (.650)

2. Cleveland Indians: 55-32-9 (.632)

3. Toronto Blue Jays: 57-34-7 (.626)

4. Washington Nationals: 45-30-23 (.600)

5. Miami Marlins: 45-34-18 (.569)

T6. San Francisco Giants: 47-36-14 (.566)

T6. Los Angeles Dodgers: 47-36-16 (.566)

8. Boston Red Sox: 45-36-14 (.555)

9. St. Louis Cardinals: 44-39-14 (.530)

10. Pittsburgh Pirates: 45-40-12 (.529)

11. Seattle Mariners: 42-38-17 (.525)

12. Baltimore Orioles: 44-40-12 (.523)

13. Texas Rangers: 43-40-15 (.518)

T14. New York Mets: 44-41-11 (.517)

T14. Chicago White Sox: 44-41-11 (.517)

16. Houston Astros: 43-41-13 (.511)

17. Detroit Tigers: 44-43-10 (.505)

18. Kansas City Royals: 39-44-13 (.469)

19. Milwaukee Brewers: 39-45-11 (.464)

20. Tampa Bay Rays: 37-46-14 (.445)

21. Colorado Rockies: 38-48-11 (.441)

22. Los Angeles Angels: 37-47-13 (.440)

23. Philadelphia Phillies: 33-44-22 (.428)

24. Arizona Diamondbacks: 37-51-9 (.420)

25. Minnesota Twins: 34-47-16 (.419)

26. San Diego Padres: 38-53-7 (.417)

27. Oakland Athletics: 34-48-16 (.414)

28. Atlanta Braves: 33-47-18 (.412)

29. New York Yankees: 33-48-16 (.407)

30. Cincinnati Reds: 34-56-7 (.377)

Granted, there aren’t a plethora of surprises here, as quality franchises like the Cubs and Indians find themselves at the top while disasters such as the Reds and Braves are located near the bottom. But that doesn’t mean it plays out the same for the other 26 clubs.

Let’s start with the New York Yankees, who currently own the 17th-best winning percentage in Major League Baseball. What happens when you take a vaunted bullpen featuring Andrew Miller, Aroldis Chapman and Dellin Betances out of the equation? As the above rankings indicate, the Pinstripes plummet from 17th to second-last in all of baseball, ahead of only the rebuilding Cincinnati Reds.

On the flip side, the Toronto Blue Jays skyrocket from the ninth-best overall record in Major League Baseball to third as it pertains to first five innings wagers, while the Miami Marlins rise from 11th to fifth, which should serve as an indicator to bettors that we may be able to abstract some value on Toronto and Miami moving forward.

Lastly, I’ll leave you with this: On Tuesday night in Cleveland, the Indians will play host to the Washington Nationals, providing the gambling world with a highly-anticipated showdown featuring two of the best first five innings clubs in the business. But here’s the catch: Washington will trot Gio Gonzalez out to the mound on Tuesday, a 30-year-old left-hander who boasts an ERA of 4.18 in innings 1-5 this season. Meanwhile, Cleveland will turn to Cy Young candidate Danny Salazar, who has surrendered a grand total of just 22 earned runs in innings 1-5 this season, good for an ERA of 2.22.

Salazar and the Indians it is.

HOUSTON (AP) Austin Romine hit a tiebreaking double in the eighth inning to make a winner of Michael Pineda, and the New York Yankees' bullpen did just fine Monday night without star closer Aroldis Chapman in a 2-1 victory over the Houston Astros.

Hours after New York traded Chapman to the Chicago Cubs, All-Star relievers Dellin Betances and Andrew Miller closed out Houston to help the fourth-place Yankees (51-48) move three games above .500 for the first time this season.

Betances struck out the side in the eighth before Miller, back in the ninth-inning role following Chapman's departure, earned his eighth save. The left-hander got Carlos Gomez to ground into a game-ending double play with two on.

Pineda (5-9) pitched seven strong innings to beat Yankees nemesis Dallas Keuchel (6-10), last year's AL Cy Young Award winner.

George Springer hit a leadoff homer and Luis Valbuena had three hits for Houston, which had won four straight. Top prospect Alex Bregman went 0 for 4 with two strikeouts in his major league debut.

RANGERS 7, ATHLETICS 6

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) - Adrian Beltre hit his second home run of the game with two outs in the ninth inning, a two-run shot that rallied Texas past Oakland for its third straight win.

Beltre, who finished with four hits, had two singles in his first three at-bats before hitting a solo homer in the seventh. His game-winning drive came on the first pitch from Ryan Madson (3-4), who had his sixth blown save in 27 opportunities.

Until then, Texas had trailed since Danny Valencia hit a two-run homer for Oakland in the first. All 13 runs in the game were scored with two outs.

Valencia also had the first of three RBI doubles in a three-run third that gave the A's a 5-1 lead.

Ian Desmond hit his 19th homer for the Rangers in the first. Nomar Mazara singled with one out in the ninth.

Jake Diekman (2-1) worked a scoreless inning for the win.

BLUE JAYS 4, PADRES 2

TORONTO (AP) - Aaron Sanchez pitched seven shutout innings to win his 10th consecutive decision, Kevin Pillar had three hits and Toronto beat San Diego.

Sanchez (11-1) became the first Blue Jays pitcher to win 10 straight since Roy Halladay won 15 decisions in a row in 2003. Halladay and Roger Clemens (1998) hold the club record.

Making their first appearance in Toronto, the Padres were held scoreless until Alex Dickerson hit a two-run homer off Bo Schultz in the ninth. Dickerson's drive into the fifth deck extended San Diego's team-record streak of games with at least one home run to 23. The 2006 Atlanta Braves were the last National League team to homer in 23 straight games.

Roberto Osuna replaced Schultz and got two outs for his 21st save.

Sanchez has not lost since April 22 against Oakland, a span of 16 starts.

Colin Rea (5-5) allowed three runs and five hits in six innings.

BREWERS 7, DIAMONDBACKS 2

MILWAUKEE (AP) - Martin Maldonado hit a three-run homer and Milwaukee went deep four times, spoiling the major league debut of Arizona pitching prospect Braden Shipley.

Scooter Gennett, Jonathan Villar and pinch-hitter Andy Wilkins also connected for the Brewers. Chase Anderson (5-10) went five innings to beat his former team for his first win since June 8.

Shipley (0-1) was selected 15th overall by the Diamondbacks in the 2013 amateur draft. He doubled and scored in the third but was chased by Maldonado's homer in the sixth.

WHITE SOX 5, CUBS 4

CHICAGO (AP) - Tyler Saladino hit a game-ending RBI single to put a damper on the Cubs' trade for Aroldis Chapman.

J.B. Shuck sparked the winning rally with a leadoff single against Mike Montgomery (3-5), who was acquired in a deal with Seattle last week. Shuck advanced on Dioner Navarro's sacrifice and Saladino followed with a bouncer into center field.

Dan Jennings (4-2) got two outs for the win. The White Sox also got two victories in their last at-bat on Sunday against Detroit.

The Cubs trailed 4-2 before Dexter Fowler and Anthony Rizzo each hit an RBI single in the ninth. They had runners on first and second with two out when Jennings struck out Jason Heyward to escape the threat.

ORIOLES 3, ROCKIES 2

BALTIMORE (AP) - Adam Jones scored the winning run in the 10th inning on a low throw to the plate by pitcher Jordan Lyles, and Baltimore won its fifth straight.

Jones reached on a one-out single off the third-base bag and took third on a single by Jonathan Schoop. Manny Machado followed with a comebacker to Lyles, who fumbled the ball before throwing home. Catcher Nick Hundley caught the ball near the ground and lost the handle while attempting to tag the sliding Jones.

Lyles (2-3) was charged with an error on the play.

Chaz Roe (1-0) worked the 10th for the win.

TIGERS 4, RED SOX 2

BOSTON (AP) - Jose Iglesias hit a two-run homer in the sixth inning, Justin Verlander pitched six solid innings and Detroit spoiled Drew Pomeranz's second start with Boston.

Verlander (10-6) allowed one run and five hits and struck out five to pick up the victory. Detroit pulled within 5 1/2 games of idle AL Central-leading Cleveland.

Francisco Rodriguez earned his 28th save.

Pomeranz (8-8), recently acquired from the San Diego Padres, gave up four hits and struck out seven in six innings. Both of the runs he allowed came via Iglesias' homer.

REDS 7, GIANTS 5

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - Jay Bruce hit a pair of two-run homers to help Anthony DeSclafani remain unbeaten, and Cincinnati beat San Francisco.

It was the third multihomer game this season for the Cincinnati slugger and 20th of his career.

DeSclafani (6-0) pitched in and out of trouble and gave up two home runs but continued his strong run since missing the first two months of the season with a strained left oblique.

Jake Peavy (5-9) allowed six runs over five-plus innings.

PHILLIES 4, MARLINS 0

MIAMI (AP) - Jeremy Hellickson dominated Miami for a second straight start, throwing six innings of one-hit ball.

Tommy Joseph hit a two-out RBI double in the top of the eighth to break a scoreless tie, and David Hernandez (2-3) pitched an inning in relief to earn the victory in a combined two-hitter.

Hellickson has been the subject of trade rumors, some connecting him to the Marlins.

Miami outfielder Ichiro Suzuki grounded out in his only at-bat - a pinch-hit appearance in the eighth - to remain at 2,996 career hits.

Fernando Rodney (1-3) allowed Joseph's double to left-center field.

ANGELS 6, ROYALS 2

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - Albert Pujols drove in four runs and Hector Santiago won his fifth consecutive start for Los Angeles.

Pujols leads the majors with 26 RBIs in July, including 16 in his past eight games.

Santiago (9-4) is 5-0 with a 1.48 ERA in July. He held the Royals to two runs on five hits with four walks and five strikeouts.

Ian Kennedy (6-9) is 0-3 in five starts since a victory June 26.

Armadillo: Tuesday's six-pack

Random teams' odds to win college basketball national title next April.......

-- Syracuse and West Virginia are both 50-1.

-- UConn, Iowa State and Miami are all 60-1.

-- Baylor, Butler and Utah are all 100-1

-- VCU, Arizona State and Mississippi State are all 200-1.

-- Providence, BYU and Northwestern are all 300-1; Northwestern has never even been in the NCAA tournament.

-- Temple, St John's and Stanford are all 500-1.

**********

Armadillo: Tuesday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but........

13) Cubs acquired Aroldis Chapman from New York as they try and strengthen their bullpen for October- the trade is eerily similar to the one Chicago made with the A's two years ago, when Oakland traded minor league SS Addison Russell to the Cubs for starting pitchers Jeff Samardzija and Jason Hammel.

12) Since the All-Star break, under is 87-54 in major league baseball.

11) I'd be surprised if the Miami Heat gives out uniform #3 this year-- Dwyane Wade is best player in Miami history, I'd hope they'd let that number sit for a while until another Heat player was allowed to wear it.

10) Was surprised to learn that Toronto is the 5th-largest city in North America.

9) Cardinals-Mets got rained out last night, will play a twinbill today.

8) Texas Rangers 1B Prince Fielder is out for the year with a neck injury, second time in three years that has happened to him. Rangers owe him $96M over the next four years-- back end of a lot of these huge contracts are really disasters.

7) Chris Sale will pitch against the Cubs Thursday, first day after his suspension is lifted-- would be funny if the White Sox went with those blue throwbacks again for his first game back. Weird situation-- the guy makes $9.15M a year- for that much money, I'd play ball in pajamas if they wanted me to.

6) Speaking of the White Sox, they won their last three games on walk-offs; last time they did that was way back in 1962,

5) Its good to coach the King: Tyronn Lue gets $35M for five years from the Cavs.

4) Quote of the Day, part 2, from Miami Heat's Tyler Johnson, who now will make $12.5M year for the next four years:

“I threw up a couple of times when I heard the number go out there. I was in shock. I even lost a little bit of weight, because just the anxiety of going through that whole process and not knowing where I was going to be.”

3) Eight or nine years ago, former Tonight Show sidekick Ed McMahon wasn't doing well late in his life-- his California home was about to be foreclosed on, he couldn't make the payments and in his 80's, he was close to becoming homeless.

A stranger who didn't know McMahon personally read about this-- he stepped up, bought the house and allowed McMahon to live there until he passed away in 2009. Damn nice thing to do and he did it just to help an aging star out late in his life.

That man was Donald Trump.

2) NFL re-instated Cleveland WR Josh Gordon from his one suspension, but he still has to sit out the first four games of this year. If he is back to playing form and not messed up, Gordon can really help the Cleveland passing game.

1) Thanks to Ken Thomson of SportsXRadio for having me in studio as his guest last night. Ken is a better radio host than most guys on the national scene- he is extremely knowledgeable and a good guy too.
