Inside the Paint - Monday

January 12, 2014

After taking a mini-hiatus Sunday with just three games, the NBA picks up the tempo on Monday with seven games. If you haven’t invested much time handicapping the hardwood lately, you should be aware of some hot and cold teams in the Association.

Let’s start with the bad and that’s probably an understatement for a couple of these clubs.

Cold

Boston wasn’t expected to be competitive this season but it opened with a 4-4 record under rookie head coach Brad Stevens, who refuted reports that the franchise was going to tank. Since the .500 start, the team has gone 8-21, which includes a current skid of 1-11 in their last 12. The Celtics come home Monday after losing all five games on their trip to the West Coast. They did save some face but covering the last three but they’re still 4-8 against the spread in their last 12. On Monday, the Celtics will try to get over the jetlag and step up against Houston, who has gone 11-3 SU and 8-6 ATS versus the Eastern Conference this season.

New Orleans has dropped five straight games and it’s gone 1-6 ATS in its last seven games. It’s hard to beat up the Hornets because they have been hit with the injury bug lately – Jrue Holiday (ankle), Ryan Anderson (back) and Tyreke Evans (ankle). Evans is ‘questionable’ for Monday’s home game against San Antonio but the other two are ‘out.’ New Orleans didn’t have much depth to begin with and that’s part of the reason why it opened as 5 ½-point home underdog to the Spurs, who have won eight of the last 10 meetings in this series.

The Eastern Conference has been dreadful this season and helping that cause is Orlando, who enters Monday with seven straight losses both SU and ATS. Six of those setbacks were by double digits and the defense gave up 100-plus in each of the last five games. The Magic will try to right the ship when they conclude their five-game road trip at Dallas on Monday. The Mavericks opened as 11 ½-point favorites and the line has already started to rise. Orlando didn’t have veteran guard Aaron Afflalo (foot) in Saturday’s 120-94 blowout loss at Denver and he’s ‘doubtful’ against the Mavs. Make a note that the Magic are 2-14 SU and 5-10-1 ATS versus Western Conference opponents this season. Dallas owns a 9-4 SU and 6-7 ATS mark against the East this season.

Hot

Toronto has been the hottest team at the betting counter recently, covering in eight straight games. The Raptors have gone 6-2 SU during this span and the losses came against superior opponents in the Heat (97-102) and Pacers (79-86) on the road. Bettors might want to tread lightly on Toronto come Monday because it’s laying double digits at home to Milwaukee and it hasn’t been in that situation all season. As a favorite, the Raptors have gone 10-6 SU and 8-8 ATS. The Bucks could be mentioned above in the “Cold” section but they’ve been playing poorly all season, evidenced by their record (7-29 SU, 12-24 ATS). Surprisingly, they’ve won more games (4-15) on the road than at home but that shouldn’t make you back a team that is 0-7 both SU and ATS when catching double digits this season.

Don’t look now but New York has won five of its last six and more importantly it’s produced a 6-0 record against the number during this run and that includes outright wins over contenders San Antonio and Miami. The Knicks will face another test on Monday when Phoenix visits Madison Square Garden. New York opened as a three-point favorite and it could be catching the Suns at the right time. Phoenix has been a great story this season but it’s dropped three of four. However, all four games were decided by five points or less during this span. Surprisingly, the Suns are 5-4 both SU and ATS versus the East this season and that includes two setbacks on their current road trip.

After closing 2013 with seven straight losses, Denver has started the New Year with five straight wins. The Nuggets have gone 4-1 ATS during the winning streak and it appears they found their offensive groove. The team is averaging 119.6 PPG in its last five games, which has helped the ‘over’ go 4-1. Helping the Nuggets’ success has been their homecourt, which they won’t have on Monday when they travel to Utah. No overnight line was posted due to the status of Jazz forward Gordon Hayward, who is ‘questionable’ with a hip injury. These teams have met twice this season and the road team has captured victories in both games. The ‘under’ went 2-0.

Bank Shots: NBA's weekly betting news and notes

Each week, we look back on the NBA betting scene and give you the best - and worst - basketball bets, as well as some spots to keep an eye on with the upcoming schedule.

For the week of Jan. 5-11

Hottest ATS - Toronto Raptors (2-2 SU, 4-0 ATS)

Sound familiar? The Raptors have been by far the best cover play since the end of the Christmas break, going a perfect 9-0 ATS as they continue to impress since trading Rudy Gay to Sacramento. After looking strong in narrow losses at Miami and Indiana - far and away the two strongest teams in the Eastern Conference - Toronto returned to its winning ways with runaway home victories over the Detroit Pistons and Brooklyn Nets. Expect the good times to continue this week, with home games against Milwaukee and Minnesota and a road game versus Boston on the docket.

Coldest ATS - Philadelphia 76ers (0-4 SU, 0-4 ATS)

After putting together one of the unlikeliest four-game road winning streaks in the NBA this season - rattling off victories against the Lakers, Denver, Sacramento and Portland over a seven-day span - the 76ers crashed back to Earth last week. Despite getting points in all four games, Philadelphia fell victim to its sieve-like defense, losing all four contests by double digits while surrendering an average of 113.3 points per contest. The 76ers will look to bounce back this week, hosting the Charlotte Bobcats and Miami Heat before hitting the road to face the Chicago Bulls.

Best Over play - Detroit Pistons (2-3 SU, 4-1 O/U)

It was a busy week for the Pistons, who were on both ends of some of the more entertaining games of the week. After dropping three straight games to open the stretch - surrendering 112 points to both the Memphis Grizzlies and the Toronto Raptors - The Pistons averaged 112 points in consecutive victories over the Philadelphia 76ers and the Phoenix Suns. Detroit will now enjoy a much-needed rest, with six days between its triumph over the Suns and the opener of back-to-back games against the Utah Jazz and the Washington Wizards.

Best Under play - New York Knicks (4-0 SU, 4-0 O/U)

A team boasting Carmelo Anthony, J.R. Smith and Andrea Bargnani will never be thought of as a defensive juggernaut - making last week's numbers positively boggling. New York played all four of its games under the total, with all but one of those games falling more than 10 points below. New York has struggled on offense all season, and enjoyed only a modest boost in that area last week; the big impact came on defense, where the Knicks held all four opponents below 93 points. New York has a four-game week ahead, with home games against Phoenix and the Clippers and road dates in Charlotte and Indiana.

Surveying the schedule:

The Denver Nuggets have surged back above the .500 mark on the strength of a five-game winning streak that has renewed optimism in Colorado. Denver faces an interesting test over its next five games, with all five opponents having beaten the Nuggets in their previous meeting earlier in the season. That includes a relatively tame three-game schedule this week, with road games against the Utah Jazz and Golden State Warriors preceding a home date with Cleveland.

Knicks at Bobcats - 7:05 PM EST

New York: 15-22 SU, 16-21 ATS
Charlotte: 15-23 SU, 20-16-2 ATS

The Knicks are quietly riding a five-game winning streak, while limiting four of those opponents to 92 points or less during this hot stretch. New York travels to Charlotte with no rest following Tuesday's overtime win against Phoenix, as Mike Woodson's team has covered six of seven games. The Knicks and Bobcats are playing for the third time this season, as the road team has won each meeting, including a 101-91 victory by New York as 3 ½-point favorites in early November.

Charlotte has taken several steps backwards since a modest three-game winning streak in mid-December, dropping nine of its past 11 contests. The Bobcats haven't exactly been pointspread gold of late, going 1-5 ATS the last six games, while playing seven of its previous eight contests on the highway. Charlotte's defense has taken a hit as well, giving up at least 103 points in five of the past six games, resulting in five 'unders.'

Kings at Pacers - 7:05 PM EST

Sacramento: 13-22 SU, 15-19-1 ATS
Indiana: 29-7 SU, 24-12 ATS

The Kings finished off their five-game homestand with three consecutive victories, including back-to-back blowouts over the Magic and Cavaliers. Sacramento put together the biggest rout of the season by dominating Cleveland on Sunday, 124-80 to easily cash as three-point favorites. The Kings are playing only their 14th road game of the season, but have covered three straight on the highway, including a 110-106 triumph at Houston on New Year's Eve as 10-point underdogs.

The Pacers have been off since Friday's whipping of the Wizards, 93-66 as nine-point home favorites. Indiana has limited 12 straight opponents to less than 100 points, while riding a seven-game 'under' streak. Frank Vogel's club has fared extremely well against Western Conference foes, putting together an 8-2 SU/ATS record, including a 4-0 SU/ATS at Bankers Life Fieldhouse.

Thunder at Grizzlies - 8:05 PM EST

Oklahoma City: 28-9 SU, 20-17 ATS
Memphis: 17-19 SU, 16-19-1 ATS

Since losing point guard Russell Westbrook to a knee injury on Christmas, the Thunder owns a 5-4 SU and 4-5 ATS record the last nine games. Oklahoma City is coming off a 101-85 victory over a dreadful Milwaukee squad on Saturday, but the Thunder has dropped consecutive road contests to Utah and Denver. The Grizzlies knocked the Thunder out of the playoffs last season, but OKC picked up a modicum of revenge in the first meeting this season in a 116-100 win at FedEx Forum in December.

Memphis is seeking its first three-game winning streak since mid-November, as the Grizzlies topped the Suns and Hawks at home over the weekend. In Sunday's triumph over Atlanta, the Grizzlies topped the 100-point mark for the fifth straight game, while hitting the 'over' in five consecutive contests. Memphis has covered six straight overall, including four in a row in the underdog role.

Cavaliers at Lakers - 10:35 PM EST

Cleveland: 13-24 SU, 17-20 ATS
Los Angeles: 14-23 SU, 18-18-1 ATS

Following a humbling 44-point loss at Sacramento on Sunday, the Cavaliers look to bounce back with a trip to Los Angeles. Cleveland has won just three road games in 19 tries, with one of those victories coming at the start of this highway swing at Utah on Friday night. In spite of the ugly defeat to the Kings, the Cavs have cashed in seven of the last 10 games, while finishing 'under' the total in six of the previous seven contests overall.

The Lakers are pretty much cooked this season with their myriad of injuries, as Los Angeles has lost each of its last four games by at least 13 points. How bad has it been for Mike D'Antoni's club? The Lakers were listed as double-digit underdogs in each of the last three contests and failed to cash in those defeats to the Mavericks, Rockets, and Clippers. Since the start of December, the Lakers have lost seven of nine home games, while covering just three times in this stretch.

Armadillo: Tuesday's six-pack

-- Titans hired Ken Whisenhunt as coach, an excellent move. Everyone had him going to the Lions. Tennessee only interviewed four candidates.

-- 122 current NBA players at one time played in the D-League.

-- Timberwolves are 4-14 vs teams with winning records, 14-5 vs all the other teams in the league.

-- Johnny Manziel signed with Lebron James' agents, so expect to see him in a few commercials coming up......

-- Bronx Bombers designated Vernon Wells for assignment, which means he could be making $20M+ this season.......for playing in AAA.

-- James Franklin has already poached two Vanderbilt recruits, and offered scholarships to six more as he heads off to Penn State. Vandy was going to have a top 25 recruiting class had Franklin stayed. Now? Not so much.

*****

Armadillo: Tuesday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but......

13) Confidence is essential in being successful at anything; look at golfer Jimmy Walker. He goes winless for seven years on the PGA Tour, total of 197 tournaments, then wins two of his next six. Why?

Because now he believes he can win. He always had the talent, just needed that little nudge that told him he is good enough.

12) Bad news as expected for Colorado basketball: Spencer Dinwiddie is out for the year with a torn ACL. He was their best player- big loss.

11) Duke 69, Virginia 65-- Blue Devils were up 11 with 4:10 left, Virginia went up by a point, but Duke got a great bounce on a 3-ball from the corner and escaped with a win. You get the feeling, though that something is amiss with Duke- very little defensive presence inside.

10) Dunkin’ Donuts is expanding into California; does that mean In ‘n Out Burger or Jack in the Box might come east? Jack/Box has 24-hour breakfast—darned tasty.

9) Vin Scully doesn't have a Hall of Fame vote; how is that possible?

8) Cleveland Browns paid deposed coach Rob Chudzinski $10.5M to go away, that’s million, with an M. Wish someone would pay me to go away.

7) Irony Department: Peyton Manning’s first NFL playoff win was in 2003, 41-10 over…..the Broncos.

6) College/pro teams sometimes use search firms to find a new coach, which is total BS. What the hell is a GM/AD doing if he needs a firm to find a coach for him? These firms get 20-30% of the new coach’s first-year salary, which is a significant amount of money.

Sometimes its payola; the search firm puts the AD/GM in his job, then that exec uses the same firm to fill coaching vacancies, paying back the agency for getting him his job. No way in hell an NFL exec should use a search firm, it says you can’t do the job yourself.

5) Broncos-Patriots Sunday is only second time in last nine years the #1-2 seeds have met in AFC title game, and only fifth time in last nine years NFL-wide (out of 18 games).

4) Lions lost out on hiring Ken Whisenhunt; this is a franchise that in the 47 years of the Super Bowl era, has a playoff record of 1-10. One playoff win in 47 years, plus they once let Matt Millen run their franchise. Oy.

3) ESPN analyst/Duke alum Jay Williams ripped Maryland coach Mark Turgeon on–air Sunday night, as the Terps were getting drubbed by Florida State. He basically said Terps play too tight because Turgeon takes guys out after they make mistakes; does Williams think Coach K is a highly tolerant leader who laughs off his players' miscues?

Unusual for an analyst to go after a coach like that; not sure if its because Maryland is bolting the ACC, but I’m sure it hit some exposed nerves in Maryland, especially coming from a Duke alum.

2) One of the great stories is from former LSU QB Rohan Davey, who also was a backup for the Patriots for a while.

He said that when the Tigers came out of the tunnel to start a Saturday night game in Baton Rouge, “…you could smell the bourbon in the air.”

Nick Saban paraphrased that story in speech to football coaches Monday. If you’ve never seen an SEC game in person, it really is quite an experience- if you love college football or a good party or both, I highly recommend it.

1) Two QBs in AFC title game are making a combined $52M this season; two QBs in NFC title game are making a combined $1,266,000. Yikes.

See spot. See spot bet: This week's best NBA spot bet opportunities

Letdown spot

Memphis beat Oklahoma City in a playoff series last season, but the Thunder beat the Grizzlies 116-100 earlier this year. The Grizzlies will be looking to avenge that home loss Tuesday night. If Memphis is successful in doing so, then its game the very next night in Milwaukee will be a difficult spot.

That game against the Bucks also precedes a return home where the Grizzlies play a pair of games on their home court. Memphis has come on strong recently, going 7-4 SU and 9-2 ATS over its last 11 games. The Grizzlies’ four losses have come by eight, four, three, and two points.

Lookahead spot

The Los Angeles Clippers have a pair of back-to-back games on the East Coast this week - the first two stops of a seven-game road trip. The Clippers will play in New York against the Knicks Friday night, and then against the Pacers in Indiana Saturday. They beat the Knicks easily earlier this season, so that’s not the game they have their eyes on.

Indiana beat the Clippers in Los Angeles 105-100 back on December 1. The Pacers controlled that game, leading by as many as 14 points while the Clippers only lead was by a single point. Los Angeles will be looking to atone for that home loss to Indiana, so it may lack focus the night before in New York.

Schedule spot

The Miami Heat will be a focused team on Wednesday when they play the Wizards in Washington, D.C. The Heat will be going into that game off four full days of rest, while the Wizards will be playing their fourth game in six nights.

Miami will also be playing off back-to-back road losses at New York (102-92) and at Brooklyn in double overtime (104-95). Miami is starting a four-game road trip with this game, so it will be important for it to start off with a win. Washington lost 103-93 in Miami back on November 3.

Heat at Wizards - 7:05 PM EST

Miami: 27-10 SU, 16-21 ATS
Washington: 17-19 SU, 20-16 ATS

The Heat heads back to the court after visiting President Obama on Tuesday to honor the team's championship from last season. Miami is winless on its current six-game road swing after falling at New York and Brooklyn, losing both games as a favorite of five points or more. Erik Spoelstra's club has covered just two of the last seven games away from South Florida, while losing two of the past three visits to the Verizon Center.

The Wizards beat the Bulls from start to finish in Monday's 102-88 road triumph as 2 ½-point underdogs. Washington has performed well on the highway with wins in seven of its last nine away contests, but playing at home has been a different story. Randy Wittman's team is just 1-7 SU and 2-6 ATS the previous eight contests at the Verizon Center, including four outright losses in the underdog role.

Raptors at Celtics - 7:35 PM EST

Toronto: 19-17 SU, 22-14 ATS
Boston: 13-26 SU, 19-19-1 ATS

These two division rivals are going in completely opposite directions now, as Toronto is the lone Atlantic Division squad sitting above the .500 mark. The Raptors have won 10 of its past 13 games, while incredibly covering 12 times in this stretch, including 10 straight. Toronto has compiled a 3-1 SU/ATS record in the road favorite role this season, including victories over division foes New York and Philadelphia on the highway. The Raptors last met the Celtics on opening night in a 93-87 home triumph, but Boston covered as eight-point underdogs.

The Celtics have hit the skids since late December, losing nine straight games and 12 of the past 13 overall. Brad Stevens' club has allowed at least 104 points in five of the last six games, but all six losses in this stretch came to Western Conference teams that can all be considered playoff squads. Incredibly, this is just the third time this season the Celtics are listed in the role of a home underdog against an Eastern Conference foe, losing the first two times to the Pacers and Pistons.

Nuggets at Warriors - 10:35 PM EST

Denver: 19-18 SU, 17-20 ATS
Golden State: 25-14 SU, 18-19-2 ATS

The Warriors knocked the Nuggets out of the playoffs last season in six games, while winning at Pepsi Center in a low-scoring affair in late December, 89-81. Golden State has covered seven straight meetings with Denver, including four consecutive victories at Oracle Arena. The Warriors have been off since last Friday's narrow 99-97 triumph over the Celtics following a 6-1 road trip, but Golden State failed to cover as 11 ½-point favorites.

The Nuggets were chased early in Monday's road defeat to undermanned Utah, 118-103, which snapped a five-game winning streak for Brian Shaw's team. Denver is getting back to its run-and-gun ways, cashing the 'over' in six of the last seven games, while topping the 100-point mark each time during this stretch. The road hasn't been kind to Denver of late, as the Nuggets are 1-4 SU/ATS the past five games away from the Pepsi Center, with all four losses coming by double-digits.

Mavericks at Clippers - 10:35 PM EST

Dallas: 23-16 SU, 21-18 ATS
Los Angeles: 26-13 SU, 23-16 ATS

The last time these teams met up in Dallas, Chris Paul separated his right shoulder in a 119-112 comeback victory for the Clippers. Since the All-Star guard has been sidelined, Los Angeles has won and covered three of four games, including three consecutive home victories over the Magic, Celtics, and Lakers. It's not saying much to beat the aforementioned squads, as the last team sitting above the .500 mark the Clippers knocked off at home was the Nuggets on December 21, although L.A. is 9-1 the last 10 games at Staples Center.

The Mavericks have played extremely well on the highway lately, winning five of their past six games away from the American Airlines Center. Dallas is currently riding a three-game hot streak, but two of those victories came against beat-up New Orleans and Orlando. Rick Carlisle's team is playing more of a defensive-minded style lately, cashing the 'under' in eight of the last 10 games, including five straight 'unders' on the highway.
