Top 25 roundup: WVU upsets Kansas

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. -- Point guard Juwan Staten's spinning layup with 4.3 seconds left lifted No. 23 West Virginia to a stunning 62-61 upset of No. 8 Kansas.

Staten finished with 20 points, making amends for missing a 17-foot jumper with 58 seconds left. After Staten's go-ahead hoop, a long inbounds pass to streaking guard Frank Ellis gave the Jayhawks a chance to answer, but the junior's 5-footer rolled off the rim.

West Virginia (20-6, 8-5 Big 12) knocked off Kansas at the WVU Coliseum for the second straight year, despite Jayhawks forward Perry Ellis scoring 15 of his 19 points in the second half.

Kansas, seeking its 11th consecutive Big 12 regular-season title, made five of seven 3-point shots in the second half and led by as many as six points. Mason finished with 18 points. Guard Jevon Carter added 13 for the Mountaineers.

Butler 58, Creighton 56

OMAHA, Neb. -- Just over 48 hours after an emotional home loss to No. 6 Villanova, the 19th-ranked Bulldogs rallied for a win. Butler trailed the Bluejays 54-48 with 3:13 remaining in front of a boisterous crowd of 17,971.

Bulldogs forward Roosevelt Jones sank the winning layup with three seconds to play. Bluejays guard Austin Chatman missed a 3-point attempt with one second left.

Butler (19-7, 9-4 Big East) got a game-high 19 points from guard Kellen Dunham, and Jones added 18 points. Butler forward Kameron Woods contributed 10 points and 10 rebounds. Chatman and guard Devin Brooks each scored 17 points for the Bluejays (12-15, 3-11).

Virginia 61, Pittsburgh 49

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. -- The second-ranked Cavaliers used a late surge to close out the Panthers. Pitt became the 11th opponent that Virginia held under 50 points this season.

Guard Malcolm Brogdon led the Cavaliers (24-1, 12-1 ACC) with 18 points and netted his 1,000th career point late in the game. He shot 6-for-6 from the free-throw line. Forward Anthony Gill chipped in with 12 points and six rebounds.

Artis led the Panthers (17-10, 6-7) with 20 points and eight rebounds. Pitt forward Sheldon Jeter added 10 points and six boards.

Villanova 80, Seton Hall 54

VILLANOVA, Pa. -- The sixth-ranked Wildcats sank 12 3-pointers and ran away with a rematch against the Pirates. Villanova, which earned its seventh win in a row Monday, lost 66-61 in overtime to the Seton Hall on Jan. 3.

Villanova guard Darrun Hilliard led the way with 18 points, as the senior shot 6-for-16 from the floor and 4-for-8 from 3-point range. Four other players scored in double figures for the Wildcats (24-2, 11-2 Big East).

Freshman guard Isaiah Whitehead had 15 points for the Pirates (15-11, 5-9 Big East). Junior guard Sterling Gibbs added 12 before getting ejected for elbowing Villanova guard Ryan Arcidiacono in the head on a loose ball with 4:38 remaining.

Tuesday's Tip Sheet

February 17, 2015

Kentucky at Tennessee – 7:00 PM EST – ESPN

John Calipari’s squad has taken the court 25 times this season and has yet to lose, as the top-ranked Wildcats travel to Knoxville looking to capitalize off Saturday’s blowout of South Carolina. Kentucky snapped a five-game ATS skid with a convincing 77-43 rout of the Gamecocks to easily cash as 18 ½-point home favorites. In two victories this season over South Carolina, Kentucky allowed just 25 made field goals in 108 attempts (23%), while improving to 12-0 in SEC play.

Tennessee has gone through plenty of ups and downs in Donnie Tyndall’s first season on the sidelines, posting a 14-10 record. The Volunteers suffered quality losses in non-conference play to VCU, Kansas, Marquette, and N.C. State, but rebounded to start 4-1 in SEC action. However, the Vols have dropped five of their past seven games, including Saturday’s 73-55 setback to LSU as 2 ½-point home favorites, as Tennessee fell behind by 27 points at halftime.

The Volunteers have been a terrific team to back in conference action when listed as an underdog, posting a 6-0 ATS record, including a 74-69 home victory over Arkansas in January. Kentucky continues to lay heavy numbers in SEC play, but the ‘Cats aren’t helping out backers with a 4-8 ATS record inside the league, including three straight non-covers in road wins at Florida, LSU, and Missouri.

From a totals perspective, the Wildcats cashed the ‘under’ in 15 of their first 19 games, but UK has seen the ‘over’ hit in five of the past six contests, including in three straight games away from Rupp Arena. Kentucky held off Tennessee last season in Lexington, 74-66, but the Vols covered as 8 ½-point underdogs. The Wildcats head to Knoxville for the first time since February 2013, when the Vols blasted Kentucky, 88-58 as two-point home ‘dogs.

Texas at Oklahoma – 9:00 PM EST – ESPN2

A pair of 17-8 teams meet up in Norman as the Sooners look to bounce back from Saturday’s 59-56 defeat at Kansas State. Marcus Foster drilled the go-ahead three-pointer in the final seconds for the Wildcats to snap Oklahoma’s five-game winning streak, even though the Sooners held K-State to just 26% shooting from the floor. OU scored its fewest points in Big 12 play and tied for its lowest output of the season in a 69-56 loss to Wisconsin in late November.

Texas has woken up since a 3-6 slump to begin conference play by stringing together three straight wins. Although the victories haven’t come against the Big 12 heavies (Kansas State, TCU, and Texas Tech), the Longhorns are improving their credentials towards an NCAA Tournament berth. In Saturday’s 56-41 home victory over Texas Tech, the ‘Horns failed to cash as 16 ½-point favorites, but held their second straight opponent to below 43 points.

The Sooners blew away the Longhorns in their first meeting to tip off Big 12 play in Austin, 70-49 as six-point underdogs. Lon Kruger’s team jumped out to a 33-14 halftime lead and never looked back, as UT shot just 30% from the field. Oklahoma has won each of the past three meetings in the series as Texas last won in Norman back in 2012.

In conference play, Oklahoma has been a solid bet in the favorite, covering six of eight times, including a 5-1 SU/ATS record at the Lloyd Noble Center. The Longhorns have split six road games inside the conference, but the three wins are over K-State, TCU, and Texas Tech, while the three losses have come to upper-tier squads Baylor, Oklahoma State, and Iowa State. The lone cover in the underdog role came against Iowa State thanks to a late comeback in an 89-86 loss last month as five-point ‘dogs.

Michigan State at Michigan – 9:00 PM EST – ESPN

Both these rivals aren’t ranked, but the Spartans are playing with plenty of momentum at the moment by winning four of their past five games to improve to 17-8 overall and 8-4 inside the Big 10. Michigan State head to Ann Arbor to take on a Michigan club that has dropped four straight games since a promising 6-3 start in the league.

Tom Izzo’s squad is fresh off a grind-it-out 59-56 home triumph over Ohio State on Saturday to barely cash as 2 ½-point favorites. Denzel Valentine and Branden Dawson led the way by combining for 32 points, as the Spartans picked up its first home cover in five tries. Michigan State still has work to do if it wants a top-three seed in the conference tournament, as the Spartans begin tonight’s action trailing Wisconsin, Maryland, and Purdue in the league standings.

Michigan has gone through plenty of changes this season with key players heading to the NBA and a myriad of injuries. However, John Beilein’s team has found a way to remain competitive in spite of a 6-7 record inside the Big 10 as the Wolverines have covered five of the last seven games. Michigan was several minutes away from putting away Illinois last Thursday as the Wolverines led by seven with three minutes remaining. However, the Illini closed out regulation on a 7-0 run, then outscored Michigan, 14-2 in overtime to win, 64-52 and pull off a miracle front-door cover as 7 ½-point favorites.

These teams are meeting for the second time this month, as Michigan State held off Michigan in East Lansing, 76-66 in overtime. The Wolverines erased a five-point halftime deficit to force overtime, but Michigan failed to score a point in the five-minute session, although they managed a cover as 11 ½-point underdogs. The Spartans have struggled in the past few trips to Ann Arbor by losing four straight visits to Crisler Arena.

Michigan is listed as a home underdog in conference play for just the third time, going 0-2 SU and 1-1 ATS with the only cover coming in an overtime setback to Wisconsin as 10 ½-point ‘dogs. The Spartans own a 4-6 ATS record as a favorite against conference foes, but four of those ATS defeats came as double-digit favorites.

SEC Analysis

February 17, 2015

The SEC has a bunch of teams loaded with talent, depth and athleticism. Kentucky won national championships in 1998 and 2012, Florida knocked on the door in 2000 getting to the title game against Michigan State, then won it all with back-to-back titles. Here's a look at some of college basketball's best teams in the SEC.

Kentucky: The Wildcats have another powerhouse young team for coach John Calipari, who likes to groom them for one year before they head off to the NBA. Kentucky has a powerful frontcourt of 6-11 freshman Karl-Anthony Towns (8.5 ppg, 6 rpg), 7-0 junior Willie Cauley-Stein and 7-foot sophomore Dakari Johnson (8 ppg, 5.5 rpg).

Even the backcourt is huge with 6-6 sophomore Aaron Harrison (11 ppg) and 6-6 freshman Devin Booker (10.6 ppg). They flattened Kansas (72-40) and North Carolina (84-70) by double digits, and showed clutch ability with back-to-back overtime wins over Ole Miss and Texas A&M. The Wildcats are 7-3-1 ATS on the road and 16-7 run under the total with great defense. Just bring on March: This talented, deep group is ready.

Arkansas: The Razorbacks are getting it done by running, Top 15 in the nation in scoring and assists behind a backcourt of 6-5 senior guard Rashad Madden and 6-6 junior Mike Qualls (15.7 ppg). Arkansas leads the SEC in five categories, including scoring (80) & offensive rebounds (13.7).

The frontcourt has a force in 6-11 sophomore Bobby Portis (17.7 ppg, 8.7 rpg), and Arkansas is one of five teams in the nation with two top 30 RPI road wins. The Razorbacks have been great at home and at covering against weak teams, 17-8 ATS at home against a team with a losing road record. They play 5 of their final 8 games on the road, including a showdown at No. 1 Kentucky to end February.

Texas A&M: The Aggies are not an easy team to face with their attacking defense. They gave up just 70 points to No. 1 Kentucky in a loss -- in double overtime. They held Kentucky to 28% shooting. 6-7 junior guard Jalen Jones (13.8 ppg, 6.3 rpg) and 6-7 junior Danuel House (13.8 ppg) anchor the backcourt and lead the team in scoring, with 6-9 senior Kourtney Roberson manning the low post.

Junior guard Alex Caruso is a terrific playmaker averaging 5.5 assists per contest. The Aggies are a great bounce back team, 51-25 ATS following a loss. And that great defense really helps on the road, where the Aggies are 46-21 under the total.

Ole Miss: The Rebels have impressed with another strong offense behind the backcourt duo of junior guard Stephan Moody (15.5 ppg) and senior Jarvis Summers (13 ppg). Like Texas A&M, they took top-ranked Kentucky to overtime, an 89-86 loss. They held Kentucky to 42% shooting. Ole Miss is now 13-102 against Kentucky! Kentucky had its worst defensive game of the season. The Wildcats allowed Ole Miss to shoot 49 percent from the floor and 53 percent from 3-point range. Kentucky was also outscored in the paint 30-26 by Ole Miss. Ole Miss has been on a recent 10-4 run over the total, including 7-2 over on the road.

LSU: It’s no secret how the Tigers win: Like the days of Shaq or Big Baby Davis they have a huge frontcourt with 6-10 sophomore Jarrell Martin (16 ppg, 9 rpg) and 6-8 sophomore Jordan Mickey (16.7 ppg, 11 rpg). Once again they are one of the top rebounding teams in the nation.

The backcourt has size, too, with 6-6 sophomore Tim Quarterman (12 ppg) and 6-4 junior Keith Hornsby (12.6 ppg). The Tigers have been better on the road than last season, pulling off victories at Ole Miss, Florida and Vandy, the latter in overtime. They even have a non-conference win at West Virginia building an impressive resume before March. LSU is 20-7 over the total in SEC play.

Georgia: Let’s call them the “Not-Quite Bulldogs,” because they haven’t quite been there when stepping up. Georgia lost to Gonzaga by 14, lost at home to Arkansas by 4 and lost in double overtime at LSU. 6-8 senior Marcus Thornton (13.5 ppg, 7.3 rpg) is a force at center but missed a few games recently with a concussion.

The backcourt is fine with 6-3 junior Kenny Gaines (11 ppg) and 6-5 junior Charles Mann (11 ppg). They had a showdown at Kentucky and covered as a +18 dog, but lost by 11 after falling behind at the half, 42-27. Georgia committed 16 turnovers leading to 18 Kentucky points. The Bulldogs are an impressive 30-12-1 ATS against the SEC and 19-7 under the total after a spread cover.

Seton Hall's Gibbs suspended 2 games

February 17, 2015

SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. (AP) - Seton Hall has suspended leading scorer Sterling Gibbs for two games for delivering a forearm to the face of Villanova's Ryan Arcidiacono in the second half of their Big East Conference game in Philadelphia on Monday night.

Seton Hall announced the suspension Tuesday. Gibbs will miss games at St. John's on Saturday and at home against Creighton on Feb. 28.

Gibbs was ejected from the game Monday, receiving a flagrant foul 2 in what was the fifth straight loss for the Pirates (15-11, 5-9).

Seton Hall coach Kevin Willard says Gibbs demonstrated poor sportsmanship, recognizes what he did was wrong and must be held accountable for his actions.

The Pirates were already short-handed in the backcourt after starting guard Jaren Sina left the team last week.

Louisville suspends Jones for 'Cuse game

February 17, 2015

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) - Louisville has suspended senior guard Chris Jones for a violation of team rules, leaving the No. 12 Cardinals without their assists leader and third-leading scorer for Wednesday night's Atlantic Coast Conference game at Syracuse.

The school's brief release Tuesday night did not specify what rule Jones broke or how long his suspension will last, only that he will not travel with Louisville to face the Orange (16-9, 7-5). Jones is averaging 13.6 points, 3.9 rebounds and a team-best 3.7 assists per game for the Cardinals (20-5, 8-4 ACC), who aim to bounce back from Saturday's home loss to North Carolina State.

Jones scored a team-high 20 points for Louisville in the 74-65 loss.

North Carolina at Duke

February 18, 2015

The first of at least two Duke-North Carolina games is the annual indicator that we've reached the stretch run in the college basketball season. That comes tonight at Cameron Indoor Stadium where the Blue Devils will take on a slumping Tar Heels club at 9:00 p.m. Eastern on ESPN.

As of early this morning, most books had Duke (22-3 straight up, 13-11-1 against the spread) installed as an 8.5-point home favorite. Mike Krzyzewski's team has won 11 of its 12 home games, going 5-6-1 ATS.

Since losing at Notre Dame, Duke has won has won five in a row while posting a 3-2 spread record. The Blue Devils went to the Carrier Dome on Saturday and captured an 80-72 win as 7.5-point road 'chalk.' The 152 combined points slipped 'over' the 148.5-point total.

Jahlil Okafor was the catalyst with 23 points on 10-of-15 shooting from the field. Okafor, who is probably the favorite to win ACC Player of the Year honors at this point, pulled down 13 rebounds against the Orange. The freshman center is averaging 18.2 points and 9.3 rebounds per game.

Quinn Cook added 17 points, five assists, two steals and only one turnover at Syracuse. Tyus Jones finished with 11 points, six boards and six assists.

North Carolina (18-7 SU, 12-12-1 ATS) has been an underdog three times this year, going 0-3 both SU and ATS. The Tar Heels are currently mired in a 2-8-1 ATS slump. They have lost three of their last four games, including Saturday's 89-76 loss at Pittsburgh as 3.5-point road favorites.

Jamie Dixon's squad just took it to UNC from the opening jump, leading by 14 at intermission and by as many as 24 at one point. The 13-point margin was a misleading final score, as the Tar Heels were never in the game in the second half.

In the losing effort, Brice Johnson had a team-best 19 points for UNC. Kennedy Meeks was also in double figures with 15 points in only 19 minutes of playing time. Marcus Paige had five rebounds and six assists without a turnover. However, Paige was held to just eight points and made only 1-of-7 from long distance.

Paige, who scored 24 points in last season's loss at Duke, leads UNC in scoring (13.9 points per game), assists (4.2 APG) and steals (1.4 SPG). Johnson averages 12.5 points and 7.9 rebounds per game, while Meeks is averaging 12. 4 points and 7.6 rebounds per contest. Meeks has a team-high 31 blocked shots and Johnson has 26 rejections.

The 'over' is 14-9-1 overall for Duke, 8-2 in its home games.

The 'over' is 14-8-1 overall for UNC, cashing in eight of its last 10 games. The 'over' is 5-3 in the Tar Heels' road assignments.

When these bitter adversaries met at Cameron last year, Duke won a 93-81 decision to take the cash as a 9.5-point home favorite.

**B.E.'s Bonus Nuggets**

-- The 'under' is on a 9-3 run in the last 12 Duke-UNC meetings.

-- Louisville has suspended starting guard Chris Jones (13.6 PPG) for a violation of team rules. He will miss more than just tonight's game against Syracuse. It sounds like a three-gamer similar to the suspension recently served by Kansas St.'s leading scorer Marcus Foster.

-- Seton Hall has suspended senior guard Sterling Gibbs for the next two games following his cheap shot against Villanova's Ryan Arcidiacono in Monday's blowout loss in Philadelphia. Gibbs, who leads the Pirates in scoring (16.9 PPG), is fortunate the suspension wasn't more stern. In an act of frustration that sums up the last month for Kevin Willard's team, Gibbs deliberately landed a clean elbow to Arcidiacono's nose after he lost a scrum for a loose ball. The Pirates have been immersed in frustration with Gibbs and other upperclassmen clashing while they have lost nine of their last 12 games since getting out to a 12-2 start.

--When Florida hosts Vanderbilt on Wednesday night at the O-Dome, leading scorer Michael Frazier II will miss his third straight game due to a high-ankle sprain. The Gators have lost a pair of games (vs. Ole Miss and at Texas A&M) by one point apiece without the junior guard. They have six losses this season by eight combined points.

-- Georgia guard J.J. Frazier (10.3 PPG) missed Tuesday's home loss to South Carolina due to a fractured orbital bone and a concussion sustained in Saturday's home loss to Auburn. When you are on the bubble, you don't lose back-to-back home games to Auburn and South Carolina. However, that's what UGA has done and it still has to play Kentucky at Stegeman Coliseum next week.

-- Boise St. will be short-handed again tonight at UNLV. The Broncos saw their eight-game winning streak snapped Saturday at Fresno St. when five players were out with injuries and suspensions. Mikey Thompson and Montigo Alford are expected to be out again against the Rebels, while Dezmyn Trent and Jake Ness are 'questionable' with injuries. Of course, Anthony Drmic is gone for the year after having ankle surgery in December. Rashad Vaughn, UNLV's leading scorer, will also miss this game with an injury. Most spots had BSU favored by one early this morning. CBS Sports Network will have the telecast at 11:00 p.m. Eastern.

-- After winning and covering at Tennessee last night, Kentucky is 26-0 for the first time in school history.

-- Cincinnati has five wins against RPI Top-50 foes, but it has lost three of its last five games to fall to No. 39 in the RPI. The Bearcats had a horrible loss Saturday at home to Tulane. They will try to get back on track tonight versus arch-rival Xavier as one-point home favorites.

-- East Carolina has covered in six straight until getting beaten by a hook in Saturday's 66-53 loss at Temple as a 12.5-point underdog. Jeff Lebo's Pirates are catching 10.5 points tonight at Tulsa.

Armadillo: Wednesday's six-pack

Six of the top minor league prospects of the Cleveland Indians........

1) Francisco Lindnor, SS-- 21-year old hit .273 in partial season in AAA.

2) Bradley Zimmer, OF-- Older brother is pitching prospect with Royals.

4) Justus Sheffield, P-- Turned down chance to pitch at Vandy with his brother.

6) Tyler Naquin, OF-- Hit .319 in pitcher-friendly Eastern League LY.

7) Francisco Mejia, C-- 19-year old hit .282 in NY-Penn League LY.

13) Ty-Cheng Chang, SS/3B-- Hit .346 in rookie ball last season.

**********

Armadillo: Wednesday's List of 13: Doing some thinking out loud.....

13) The #1 thing I learned Tuesday: Alex Rodriguez has excellent handwriting, as in, superior cursive writing skills that any parent would love to see their kid come home from school with. Seriously, there were people on Twitter talking about that instead of what he wrote, which I guess was part of the intent.

12) Louisville senior guard Chris Jones is suspended for tonight's game at Syracuse for off-court stuff. Jones plays 31 minutes a game and the suspension is said to be for more than one game, so this is a fairly big deal.

11) Why would a quarterback go to the NFL Combine and not throw footballs, unless he was hurt? What does it prove, other than hint that you're not as competitive person as a team would want its QB to be? It can't possibly help, can it?

10) Notre Dame 88, Wake Forest 75-- Wake's Devin Thomas had 26 in ths game, 24 against Duke, 31 against Louisville.....he also had no points in 28:00 vs Delaware State, 7 vs Nicholls State, 8 vs Bucknell. A very strange resume.

9) Atlantic 14 had five teams in NCAA tournament last March; four lost their first round game, but three of the five games went to OT, including St Joe's blowing a late lead and losing to eventual national champ UConn. Tournament is going to be that wide open again this year, especially if/when Kentucky goes down.

8) ESPN is using the score crawl on the bottom of the screen to promote tomorrow's televised games in addition to giving today's scores; cheesy at best.

7) The movie 50 Shades of Gray made over $90M last weekend; whether or not it is a good movie does not matter. It was profitable, so there will be a sequel.

6) Seton Hall suspended guard Sterling Gibbs two games for slugging a Villanova player while he was on the floor in Monday night's game- seems fair. Pirates' ship is sinking, in what started out as a promising season.

5) Oklahoma 71, Texas 69-- Longhorns are 3-5 in their last eight games, after starting season 14-4; they're forcing 4th-fewest turnovers of any team in America.

4) 16 of 40 guys on the A's 40-man roster were in other organizations last year; in less than a year, they turned over 40% of their roster, dumping six All-Stars.

3) Kentucky 66, Tennessee 48-- Karl-Anthony Towns took one shot in his 16 foul-plagued minutes and the Wildcats still won by 18, despite looking bored for a lot of this game. Looking more and more like the Wildcats will be unbeaten heading into the NCAA tournament. Would help them to get tested more than they have been.

2) Serious question: If Aaron Hernandez is acquitted at his trial, does the NFL have to re-instate him? Can you banish a guy who wasn't convicted of a crime? And if he is acquitted/re-instated, what team would have the onions to sign him?

1) Serious question #2: If you owned the Denver Broncos, are you asking Peyton Manning to take a pay cut to play next season?

See spot. See spot bet: This week's best spot bet opportunities

Letdown spot

The Duke Blue Devils have been notorious spot bet fodder when it comes time to play their rivals the North Carolina Tar Heels. Whether it’s a lookahead to UNC or a letdown after going toe-to-toe with the Tar Heels, finding value to go against one of college basketball’s most popular programs isn’t too hard when that Tobacco Road rivalry rolls around.

This season is no different. The Blue Devils have a huge showdown inside Cameron Indoor Stadium set for Wednesday night, in a battle between the No. 16 Tar Heels and No. 5 Dukies. Then Duke turns around with a tough game against Clemson in Durham. The Tiger have played the Blue Devils tough in recent meetings, winning 72-59 at home and losing 63-62 in the ACC tournament last season. The Blue Devils could be flat after tangling with their Tobacco Road rivals.

Lookahead spot

Staying in the ACC, the Florida State Seminoles are trying to breathe life into their all-but-dead NCAA tournament chances. The Noles sit at 6-7 in the conference and lack any real resume wins inside ACC play, falling to most of the programs above them in the standings. However, FSU does have a big-time matchup with Virginia this weekend. And a win over the No. 3 Cavaliers would go a long way.

Before the Seminoles can dream of a Sunday upset, the have a home stand against lowly Boston College. The Eagles are in the ACC basement but have been playing much better than their 1-11 conference mark would lead you to believe. Boston College has covered the spread in five of its last eight ACC contests and nearly knocked off Miami in overtime last time out.

Schedule spot

It’s back to work in a big way for the Dallas Mavericks this week. With the NBA returning from its annual All-Star hiatus, the Mavs are in action three of the first four nights back. Dallas kicks off the second half of the season with a road trip to Oklahoma City Thursday, then travels back home overnight to host Houston Friday.

The Mavericks get a day off Saturday before welcoming the Charlotte Hornets to the American Airlines Center. Dallas is expected to return Rajon Rondo and Tyson Chandler from injury this week, and work newly acquired forward Amar'e Stoudemire into the offense. The lineup will look very different than it did before the break and the Mavs don’t have much down time to iron out the wrinkles in the rotation.

Game of the Day: UNC at Duke
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

North Carolina Tar Heels at Duke Blue Devils (-9)

Duke freshman Jahlil Okafor receives his first opportunity to experience the school’s rivalry with North Carolina when the No. 5 Blue Devils host the No. 16 Tar Heels on Wednesday. The standout has nine double-doubles and also became the fourth Duke freshman with 10 or more 20-point games in a season when he had 23 points and 13 rebounds in last Saturday’s 80-72 win over Syracuse. The Blue Devils have won five straight games while the Tar Heels have lost three of four.

Slumping North Carolina is tied for fourth place in the tough ACC and is coming off an 89-76 loss to Pittsburgh on Saturday in which it allowed the Panthers to shoot 64.9 percent from the field. The Tar Heels are playing their third consecutive road game – though this one is the short bus ride from Chapel Hill to Durham – and fourth in five games. Duke is hard to beat at home, going 11-1 with the lone loss occurring against Miami on Jan. 13.

TV: 9 p.m. ET, ESPN, ACC Network

Forward Isaiah Hicks recently moved into the starting lineup and scored a career-best 21 points against Boston College on Feb. 7 but tallied only five points in the loss to Pittsburgh.

Cook is averaging 14.8 points – second behind Okafor (18.2 points, team-best 9.3 rebounds) – and has made 65 3-pointers, knocking down at least one in 35 consecutive games, tied for second in school history with J.J. Redick (2006). Guard Justise Winslow (11.4) and point guard Tyus Jones (11.3 points, 5.3 assists) also average in double digits.

Top 25 roundup: Kentucky cruises to 26-0

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- Kentucky was so eager to chase history this week that it left two days early for its date with rival Tennessee.

After heading out Sunday for a Tuesday night game, exiting ahead of a snowstorm that dumped a foot of snow on Lexington, Kentucky was successful in its bid to break the school record for the best start to a season. The top-ranked Wildcats improved to 26-0 with a 66-48 Southeastern Conference win over the Volunteers at Thompson-Boling Arena.

Leading just 48-44 with 9:09 left, Kentucky (26-0, 13-0 SEC) amped up its defensive pressure and outscored Tennessee 18-4 the rest of the way. The Volunteers (12-11, 6-7) made only two of 11 shots down the stretch while committing three turnovers.

After shooting 52 percent in the first half, Tennessee hit just 25 percent in the second half, eight of 32.

Notre Dame 88, Wake Forest 75

SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- The 10th-ranked Irish cranked up the defensive intensity to run away from the Demon Deacons.

All-America candidate Jerian Grant led Notre Dame (23-4, 11-3 ACC) with 24 points and 10 assists. The senior guard also had five steals. Grant became the second Notre Dame player to score at least 1,500 points and pass for at least 600 assists.

Junior forward Devin Thomas paced Wake Forest (12-15, 4-10) with 26 points and 11 rebounds.

Wichita State 84, Southern Illinois 62

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- The 13th-ranked Shockers didn't arrive for the game until a few hours before tipoff, thanks to a winter snowstorm which has slammed the Midwest. Once at SIU Arena, Wichita State buried the Salukis under an avalanche of offense.

Freshman forward Shaquille Morris scored a career-high 17 points off the bench and Wichita State made better than 58 percent of its field-goal attempts. Guards Ron Baker (13 points), Fred VanVleet (13) and Tekele Cotton (10) also hit double figures for the Shockers (24-3, 14-1).

Freshman guard Deion Lavender tallied 15 points for the Salukis (10-18, 3-12), while guard Anthony Beane hit for 14 and freshman forward Jordan Caroline netted 10 points. Southern Illinois lost for the 14th time in 17 games.

Oklahoma 71, Texas 69

NORMAN, Okla. -- The 17th-ranked Sooners couldn't do much inside all night. However, in the final 2:30, Oklahoma drove the lane, made plays on the offensive boards and got to the free-throw line to pull out a win over the Longhorns.

The Sooners trailed by as many as seven in the final seven minutes before rallying behind strong defense.

Sophomore point guard Jordan Woodard led Oklahoma (18-8, 9-5 Big 12) with 13 points. Guard Buddy Hield scored 12 for the Sooners. Forward Myles Turner scored 17 points for Texas (17-9, 6-7), while guard Kendal Yancy added 14. Longhorns forward Jonathan Holmes hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer to narrow the margin.

Baylor 54, Texas Tech 49

LUBBOCK, Texas -- Forward Taurean Prince put the 20th-ranked Bears on his shoulders and carried them to a Big 12 road win against the struggling Red Raiders. Prince scored 22 points and consistently answered Texas Tech's challenges.

Baylor forward Rico Gathers, who averages a double-double, had just two points and five rebounds, while second-leading scorer Kenny Chery had just six. However, Prince poured in 18 in the first half and came through with a couple of key baskets down the stretch to help the Bears (19-7, 7-6 Big 12) snap a two-game skid in Big 12 play.

Texas Tech guard Devaugntah Williams scored 15 points and forward Zach Smith added 10, but the Red Raiders (12-15, 2-12) lost their fourth straight.

VCU 74, Saint Louis 54

Guard/forward Treveon Graham scored 16 points and grabbed six rebounds as the 25th-ranked Rams beat the visiting Billikens in Richmond, Va. VCU won for the 30th time in its past 33 home games.

First-place VCU (20-6, 10-3 A-10) earned a 20th win for the ninth year in a row. Freshman forward Michael Gilmore added 10 points for the Rams.

Saint Louis (10-16, 2-11) was paced by freshman forward Milik Yarbrough, who scored 11 of his 17 points in the first half.

Armadillo: Thursday's six-pack

Six of the top minor league prospects of the Colorado Rockies........

1) David Dahl OF-- Three years in minors, hasn't gotten above A ball.

2) Jon Gray P-- Pitchers must puke when they get drafted by Colorado.

4) Eddie Butler-- Gave up 23 hits in 16 big league innings LY.

7) Forrest Wall, 2B-- Took $2M instead of going to North Carolina.

8) Antonio Senzatela, P-- Has 28-9, 2.49 record in 54 minor league starts.

20) Kyle Parker OF/1B-- At one time, was pretty good QB at Clemson.

**********

Armadillo: Thursday's List of 13: Random stuff on a winter night........

13) Duke 92, North Carolina 90 OT-- Duke jumped out to a 13-point lead in first half, but then Tar Heels started dominating game inside and led by 10 with 3:20 to go. UNC couldn't finish Duke off, though and lost for 4th time in last five games. Mike Krzyzewski is now 41-38 against the Tar Heels.

12) Quote of the Day, part 2: "I don't feel comfortable with the situation. I don't trust them anymore." Goran Dragic, soon to be an ex-Phoenix Sun

NBA trading deadline is today; should be a decent amount of action.

11) Xavier 59, Cincinnati 57-- Intense inner-city rivalry goes Musketeers' way, with Xavier going 10-17 from the arc, offsetting a -9 (15-6) turnover ratio. Bearcats do not have enough offense to win when other team goes 9-17 from the arc, though they did rally back from a 36-24 halftime deficit and led with a minute to go.

10) Syracuse 69, Louisville 59-- It is February 19; any team that suspends its point guard at this point of the season, especially for non-academic reasons, has problems that might not be fixable. Louisville has now lost three of its last four games, and its point guard is currently suspended.

9) Arizona State 68, UCLA 66-- ASU retired James Harden's number 13 and might've also retired UCLA's chances of going to the NCAAs; Bruins have two Pac-12 road wins, at USC and Stanford- they also lost at Alabama.

8) Arizona State has a player named Bo Barnes; his dad Jake is in the Rodeo Hall of Fame. Rodeo performers are tough humans, for sure.

7) Boise State 53, UNLV 48-- Rebels are down to seven scholarship players and just aren't very good right now; this was Boise's first win at UNLV, not counting neutral court wins in the Mountain West tournament.

6) They dimmed the lights of the Las Vegas Strip for three minutes at 10:30 last night, to honor Jerry Tarkanian; this is something that doesn't happen often; it had been done for passing of Frank Sinatra, Elvis Presley, Ronald Reagan, John Kennedy, Sammy Davis Jr, Dean Martin and George Burns.

5) The inmates are running the asylum in Manhattan, where Carmelo Anthony is done for the year, but not until he played 30 minutes in the All-Star Game Sunday. It should be noted that Anthony sat out regular season home games before the All-Star break, basically giving the finger to Knick ticket holders. He makes around $275,000 a game, would've been nice if he acted that mattered to him.

4) Davidson 65, George Washington 63-- Wildcats are 9-4 in their first season in the A-14, a huge step up from the Southern Conference. Big-time schools missed out by not hiring Bob McKillop as its coach, most notably St John's; he is excellent.

3) Northwestern 72, Minnesota 66-- Rough night for the Pitino family.

2) Iowa State 70, Oklahoma State 65-- Cyclones ended a 4-game road losing streak, as they outscored the Cowboys 9-0 over the last 2:27 to sweep OSU this season.

1) Patrick Kane of the Blackhawks leads the NHL in scoring; no American-born player has ever won the NHL scoring title. Ever.

Budweiser Duels: NASCAR betting for people who hate NASCAR betting

For a sport that promotes itself on speed, NASCAR betting can seem like one of the slowest options to sports bettors.

There are a handful of betting selections for each week’s NASCAR Sprint Cup event – outright odds, matchups, speed rows - but sitting around watching cars turn left for three or four hours is a grueling practice, especially if your bets don’t pan out.

Enter the Budweiser Duels. The pair of preliminary races at Daytona unofficially opens the Sprint Cup betting schedule, with the top drivers in NASCAR revving their engines Thursday night with Duel No. 1 at 7 pm ET and Duel No. 2 at 8:30 p.m. ET (Sprint Cup moved the Duels to a night race last season).

For those not familiar with the duels, they’re basically a condensed version of a regular race. The field is cut in half and split in two 150-mile mad dashes to determine the starting order for this Sunday's Daytona 500.

Drivers and teams don’t have time for methodical fuel-management strategies to play out nor can they afford to sit back in the pack and make adjustments, hoping to find the right groove late in the race. If they want a shot to run up front at Daytona, they have to leave it all on the track Thursday night. There's betting value to be had all over the board.

The top guns carry a heftier price tag, with some elite drivers looking to kick start the season with a win and others just trying to protect their cars in qualifying. Figuring out which guys are going all out or not can stretch your money pretty far. And then you have the live long shots, looking to make a name for themselves and punch a ticket to the "Great American Race". As well, you have your super speedway specialists who consistently dominate the restrictor-plate events on the big tracks.

The Budweiser Duels are racing at its most primal. And that’s why they’re the most exciting wagering options for those who aren’t quite sold on betting NASCAR. It’s basically the closest thing you’ll find to horse racing, but with 800 horsepower instead of one.

But while the Budweiser Duels are some of the most exciting ways to wager on auto racing, they might also be some of the most ignored. According to Ed Salmons, manager at the LVH Superbook in Las Vegas, the Duels draw about 10 percent of the total action that the Daytona 500 does.

“The Duels have historically been a non-event,” Salmons told Covers. “Betting on these races has been much smaller than normal races. Maybe that changes with the night running, but I doubt it.”

Salmons says NASCAR betting overall is growing in popularity every year, and some of the options – like head-to-head driver matchup betting – is outdrawing popular props like PGA golf matchups each week.

Not having the appeal and audience of the Daytona 500 is a blessing in disguise. NASCAR bettors can find Budweiser Duels odds closer to their opening price without the public having their say and sucking all the value out of potential contenders and popular favorites.

So, if you’re on the fence about NASCAR betting or just looking for something different Thursday night, take a gamble: Try gambling on the Budweiser Duels. You’ll quickly see that turning left never felt so right.

Here’s a look at the odds for both Budweiser Duels:

Daytona qualifying format altered for two series

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- Why have a five-minute qualifying session if no one is going to use the full five minutes?

That was one of the rationales NASCAR considered in streamlining the time trial process for the NASCAR Xfinity and Camping World Truck Series for events to be held at Daytona International Speedway this weekend.

The first round of qualifying for Friday's Nextera Energy Resources 250 NCWTS race (7:30 p.m. ET on FOX Sports 1) and Saturday's Alert Today Florida 300 Xfinity Series race (3:30 p.m. ET on FOX Sports 1) will feature cars divided into four groups, in numbers as equal as possible based on a random draw.

Smaller groups will ease pit road congestion, which was an issue during Sunday's NASCAR Sprint Cup Series qualifying. The cars will be staged with their left-side tires just outside an assigned pit box, giving each driver an unimpeded exit from pit road.

And once a car begins to roll, it must continue its progress toward the end of pit road. No more starting and stopping. No more backing up.

Each qualifying session will be reduced to 2.5 minutes as opposed to the five minutes used in the Cup series on Sunday. The 24 fastest cars from the four sessions in the first round combined will advance to the second round, which will feature two 2.5-minute sessions with cars divided into even- and odd-numbered groups based on speeds in the first round.

The fastest 12 cars advance to the final 2.5-minute round, which will determine the pole winner.

Though the new format applies only to the NCWTS and NXS races at Daytona, NASCAR considers this a trial run for possible modifications to the system for other superspeedway races, and perhaps extending to Sprint Cup.

Dale Earnhardt Jr. applauded NASCAR for its willingness to make modifications to the process.

"I'm happy that NASCAR is looking to improve and tweak and learn and to change from single-car to group qualifying," Earnhardt said. "It works really well at all the other racetracks to try to find the right mix of excitement and professionalism and all those good things that you want to have in a show and in a qualifying segment.

"It's going to take a pretty unique set of circumstances and guidelines and rules for group qualifying at the plate tracks. And I'm glad that they're open to making moves and making changes and trying to learn from those changes.”

Earnhardt, who will compete in Saturday's Xfinity Series race, also favored the move to shorter segments, given that most drivers waited until late in the sessions to leave pit road.

"Well, the waiting on pit road feels kind of clunky and unnatural," Earnhardt said. "So we're all kind of waiting. Everybody wants to be last so you can get the best draft. We all understand that.

"So, obviously, it's almost pointless to have the extra time if you're going to wait until the end anyway. So cutting down the segments may work well and just alleviate some of that waiting and anticipation."

PATRICK GOES TO BACKUP CAR

Six minutes into Wednesday's first NASCAR Sprint Cup Series practice session, Danica Patrick's No. 10 Stewart-Haas Racing Chevrolet sat immobile on the infield grass.

Patrick's car had turned and smacked the outside wall when Denny Hamlin steered to the middle in a three-wide draft, and her team immediately rolled out a backup car to use in Thursday night's Budweiser Duel at Daytona 150-mile qualifying races (7 p.m. on FOX Sports 1).

"I was just riding along and it turned, so it's the nature of pack racing, and that's what makes it challenging, too," Patrick said after exiting the infield care center. "Sometimes there's not much you can do about it. I could have collected more people, and it wouldn't have been anything that they were a part of.

"But that's just group racing at Daytona. That's the gamble that we all face. That's what makes it exciting and very frustrating. So we knew we were going to have to run hard in the Duels no matter what, and that just doesn't change."

Hamlin said he was trying to gauge how his car would react in a three-wide situation.

"People say in practice that you can't make aggressive moves, but we also have to put ourselves in decent positions where we're going to have to figure out what our car is doing," Hamlin said.

"I went through the middle and it was really wide -- it just closed as soon as I had already got inside of her (Patrick) and the lane closed. It knocked me into the 13 (Casey Mears) and we had some attrition after that."

The damage to Hamlin's car wasn’t serious enough to scrap the primary car, but Michael Annett, who also was collected in the crash, will go to a backup No. 46 Chevrolet for the Duels.

NASCAR CLARIFIES CHASE ELIGIBILITY

To be eligible to compete in the Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup, drivers must start each race for which they have qualified, unless the sanctioning body finds reason to waive that requirement.

That change, announced in a bulletin on Wednesday morning, modifies the language of Rule 17.6.2.1.a, which last year required drivers to attempt to qualify for each event to retain Chase eligibility.

Under the current provision, drivers still must attempt to qualify for each race, but they also must start every race for which they qualify successfully, unless NASCAR authorizes otherwise. A driver does not lose Chase eligibility for attempting to qualify for a race and failing to make the field.

The clarified rule would apply in a situation where Kurt Busch, for example, were to qualify for the Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte, race in the Indianapolis 500 on Sunday (as he did last year), but fail to return to Charlotte in time to start the Cup race. In that event, NASCAR would be unlikely to grant a waiver.

On the other hand, NASCAR already has indicated that Brian Vickers, who will miss the first two events of the season while recovering from offseason heart surgery, retains his Chase eligibility because of a medical exception.
