Top 25 roundup: WVU upsets Kansas
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. -- Point guard Juwan Staten's spinning layup with 4.3 seconds left lifted No. 23 West Virginia to a stunning 62-61 upset of No. 8 Kansas.
Staten finished with 20 points, making amends for missing a 17-foot jumper with 58 seconds left. After Staten's go-ahead hoop, a long inbounds pass to streaking guard Frank Ellis gave the Jayhawks a chance to answer, but the junior's 5-footer rolled off the rim.
West Virginia (20-6, 8-5 Big 12) knocked off Kansas at the WVU Coliseum for the second straight year, despite Jayhawks forward Perry Ellis scoring 15 of his 19 points in the second half.
Kansas, seeking its 11th consecutive Big 12 regular-season title, made five of seven 3-point shots in the second half and led by as many as six points. Mason finished with 18 points. Guard Jevon Carter added 13 for the Mountaineers.
Butler 58, Creighton 56
OMAHA, Neb. -- Just over 48 hours after an emotional home loss to No. 6 Villanova, the 19th-ranked Bulldogs rallied for a win. Butler trailed the Bluejays 54-48 with 3:13 remaining in front of a boisterous crowd of 17,971.
Bulldogs forward Roosevelt Jones sank the winning layup with three seconds to play. Bluejays guard Austin Chatman missed a 3-point attempt with one second left.
Butler (19-7, 9-4 Big East) got a game-high 19 points from guard Kellen Dunham, and Jones added 18 points. Butler forward Kameron Woods contributed 10 points and 10 rebounds. Chatman and guard Devin Brooks each scored 17 points for the Bluejays (12-15, 3-11).
Virginia 61, Pittsburgh 49
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. -- The second-ranked Cavaliers used a late surge to close out the Panthers. Pitt became the 11th opponent that Virginia held under 50 points this season.
Guard Malcolm Brogdon led the Cavaliers (24-1, 12-1 ACC) with 18 points and netted his 1,000th career point late in the game. He shot 6-for-6 from the free-throw line. Forward Anthony Gill chipped in with 12 points and six rebounds.
Artis led the Panthers (17-10, 6-7) with 20 points and eight rebounds. Pitt forward Sheldon Jeter added 10 points and six boards.
Villanova 80, Seton Hall 54
VILLANOVA, Pa. -- The sixth-ranked Wildcats sank 12 3-pointers and ran away with a rematch against the Pirates. Villanova, which earned its seventh win in a row Monday, lost 66-61 in overtime to the Seton Hall on Jan. 3.
Villanova guard Darrun Hilliard led the way with 18 points, as the senior shot 6-for-16 from the floor and 4-for-8 from 3-point range. Four other players scored in double figures for the Wildcats (24-2, 11-2 Big East).
Freshman guard Isaiah Whitehead had 15 points for the Pirates (15-11, 5-9 Big East). Junior guard Sterling Gibbs added 12 before getting ejected for elbowing Villanova guard Ryan Arcidiacono in the head on a loose ball with 4:38 remaining.
