Top 25 roundup: Kentucky ties school record at 25-0

LEXINGTON, Ky. -- Coach John Calipari already had won 90 of 99 games when coaching a No. 1 team and his undefeated Wildcats weren't about to spoil No. 100 Saturday afternoon at Rupp Arena.

Jumping ahead by 20 points within the first 12 minutes, Kentucky cruised to a 77-43 victory over South Carolina before a sellout crowd of 24,305.

At 25-0, Kentucky (12-0 SEC) tied the school record for best start to a season. The 1954 team finished 25-0 behind two future Basketball Hall of Famers, Cliff Hagan and Frank Ramsey.

Junior forward Willie Cauley-Stein paced Kentucky with 14 points, hitting 6 of 10 shots, and seven rebounds. Sophomore guard Aaron Harrison added 11 points, all in the first half, and sophomore center Dakari Johnson had a double-double of 10 points and 13 rebounds in just 21 minutes.

Guard Sindarius Thornwell paced South Carolina (12-12, 3-9) by scoring 20 of his team's 43 points, though he made only 5 of 17 shots. No other player scored more than six.

Earlier in the day, Calipari learned that he had been named a finalist for the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame, and his team seemed determined to validate that recognition by crushing South Carolina from the opening tip.

"I told (my players), 'You just tied a record of the most storied program in history,'" Calipari said. "I'm telling you: Winning is so much more fun than losing. You have no idea. Losing stinks."

Virginia 61, Wake Forest 60

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. -- The second-ranked Cavaliers overcame a seven-point halftime deficit to survive Wake Forest.

Playing its second full game without junior swingman Justin Anderson, Virginia (23-1, 11-1) had to create offense from other spots on the floor and used a 27-12 run at the start of the second half to eventually escape the Demon Deacons.

Wake Forest (12-14, 4-9) had the final possession of the game with the chance to pull off the upset, but guard Codi Miller-McIntyre was unable to get off a shot, turning the ball over as time expired.

Virginia led by as many as 13 points in the second half. Forward Anthony Gill paced the Cavaliers with a game-high 19 points. Guard Malcolm Brogdon added 11 points and nine rebounds, and stole the ball from Miller-McIntyre to prevent a potential game-winning shot.

Gonzaga 56, Pepperdine 48

SPOKANE, Wash. -- Point guard Kevin Pangos scored 19 points to lead third-ranked Gonzaga over Pepperdine in West Coast Conference play.

The Bulldogs (26-1, 14-0 WCC) have won 19 consecutive games, 28 straight over Pepperdine and 40 in a row at home. Gonzaga's home winning streak is the longest in the nation.

Forward Stacy Davis topped Pepperdine (15-11, 8-7) with 13 points. The Waves, who lost 78-76 to Gonzaga at home Jan. 15, were held to a season low for points and held the Bulldogs to their lowest total.

Duke 80, Syracuse 72

SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- Withstanding a 3-point barrage from one of its former players, No. 4 Duke outlasted Syracuse at the Carrier Dome in front of one of the largest on-campus crowds in college basketball history.

The Blue Devils went on a 26-7 run at the end of the first half and start of the second half to turn an 11-point deficit into an eight-point lead. The Orange had built their lead behind the lights-out shooting of junior guard Michael Gbinije, a Duke transfer who made 5 of 6 from behind the arc in the first half. He finished with a career-high 27 points for the Orange (16-9, 7-5 ACC), who lost for the fifth time in their last eight ACC games.

Duke (22-3, 9-3) won its fifth consecutive game before the sellout crowd of 35,466, which tied last year's Duke-Syracuse game at the Carrier Dome for biggest on-campus crowd in college basketball history. Naismith Award finalist Jahlil Okafor, a freshman, led the Blue Devils with 23 points.

Villanova 68, Butler 65

INDIANAPOLIS -- Guard Darrun Hilliard's 3-pointer from the right wing with 1.5 seconds remaining lifted No. 6 Villanova over No. 18 Butler in Hinkle Fieldhouse.

It was the Big East-leading 12th 3-pointer for the Wildcats (23-2, 10-2). Hilliard finished with a game-best 31 points, including Villanova's final six. He was fouled shooting a 3-pointer with 1:24 left and sank all three free throws to give the Wildcats a 65-63 lead. Butler guard Roosevelt Jones' driving layup with 17.5 seconds left tied it at 65, setting the stage for Hilliard's heroics.

Butler forward Kelan Martin had a 3-point attempt at the buzzer to tie it, but the shot bounced off the left side of the rim.

Guards Kellen Dunham and Alex Barlow each had 19 points to lead the Bulldogs (18-7, 8-4), who were up by as many as five in the second half but could not hold on.

Kansas 74, Baylor 64

LAWRENCE, Kan. -- Forward Perry Ellis surpassed the 1,000-point mark for his career by leading Kansas with 18 points as the No. 8 Jayhawks downed No. 16 Baylor.

Kansas overcame a six-point halftime deficit to claim its 21st consecutive win at home and climb to 21-4 overall and 10-2 as the Big 12 leaders. It marked the 20th straight season the Jayhawks have won at least 10 games in conference play.

Freshman guard Kelly Oubre also scored 18 points to share team-high honors with Ellis. Guard Wayne Selden added 15 for the Jayhawks, who claimed a sweep of the season series against the Bears (18-7, 6-6).

Forward Rico Gathers had 18 points and eight rebounds to lead Baylor. Point guard Kenny Chery added 17 points, but made just 6 of 15 shots.

N.C. State 74, Louisville 65

LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- Sophomore guard Cat Barber orchestrated a number of key plays and made several critical free throws down the stretch, helping inexperienced North Carolina State to a big road win over No. 9 Louisville.

The Wolfpack opened an 11-point lead and then held on in front of a packed house of 22,000 at the KFC Yum Center. Barber hit 9 of 10 free throws and had an assist in the final 2:40 for the Wolfpack (15-11, 6-7 ACC). He had 21 points, four assists and three rebounds.

Louisville (20-5, 8-4) suffered its third home loss of the season. The Cardinals, which led 31-30 at halftime, lost for the first time this season when it was ahead after 20 minutes.

Senior guard Chris Jones led Louisville with 20 points. Senior forward Wayne Blackshear had 19 points and sophomore guard Terry Rozier, who is second in the ACC in scoring, fouled out with 4:56 left and just seven points. Cardinals All-American Montrezl Harrell was held to seven points but had 13 rebounds.

Pittsburgh 89, North Carolina 76

PITTSBURGH -- Sheldon Jeter had a career-high 22 points to lead six Pittsburgh scorers in double figures as the hot-shooting Panthers downed No. 12 North Carolina.

Jeter, a sophomore forward who transferred from Vanderbilt, made his first start for Pitt on Wednesday night in a loss at Louisville and scored six points. He more than tripled that total Saturday as he made 10 of 14 shots from the field, and Pitt shot 64.9 percent (37 of 57) as a team.

Also scoring in double figures for Pitt (17-9, 6-6) were senior guard Cameron Wright (15), sophomore forward Michael Young (13), junior guard James Robinson (12), sophomore forward Jamel Artis (11) and sophomore guard Chris Jones (10).

North Carolina (18-7, 8-4), which lost for the third time in four games, was led by junior forward Brice Johnson's 19 points. Sophomore forward Kennedy Meeks added 15 points.

Iowa State 79, West Virginia 59

AMES, Iowa -- Point guard Monte Morris scored 19 points and sparked No. 14 Iowa State's second-half surge against No. 21 West Virginia.

Forward Abdel Nader added 15 points off the bench and forward Jameel McKay added 12 points and eight rebounds for the Cyclones (18-6, 8-4 Big 12), who swept the home-and-home season series.

Guard Juwan Staten produced 16 points and seven assists for West Virginia (19-6, 7-5), which trailed by only four at halftime but suffered its fourth consecutive blowout against a ranked team.

Wichita State 68, Illinois State 62

NORMAL, Ill. -- Guard Ron Baker scored 19 points and guard Fred VanVleet added 15 as No. 15 Wichita State held off a late Illinois State surge at Redbird Arena.

The Shockers (23-3, 13-1 Missouri Valley) moved one-half game ahead of idle Northern Iowa atop the conference standings.

Guard DeVaug Akoon-Purcell scored 18 points, including 15 in the second half, for Illinois State (15-11, 7-1), which dropped its third straight game.

Kansas State 59, Oklahoma 56

MANHATTAN, Kan. -- Marcus Foster hit the winning 3-pointer against Oklahoma for the second time this season and Kansas State overcame horrible shooting from the field to defeat No. 17 Oklahoma in Bramlage Coliseum.

The Wildcats (13-13, 6-7 Big 12) completed a season sweep of the Sooners.

With the score tied at 56 after a 7-0 Oklahoma run in the final 2:59, Kansas State worked for the last shot. Just like Foster did in a 66-63 overtime win on Jan. 10 in Norman, Okla., the Wildcats' leading scorer drained the go-ahead 3-pointer with 3.4 seconds left.

Kansas State shot just 26.5 percent from the field (13 of 49) but held a huge advantage from the free throw line. The Wildcats was 28 of 36 from the stripe and the Sooners (17-8, 8-5) was 13 of 17.

Kansas State was led by Foster with 14 points and forward Nino Williams with 13. Oklahoma was paced by guard Buddy Hield, who scored 14 points.

Maryland 76, Penn State 73

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. -- No. 19 Maryland had just two field goals during the final 10 minutes, but the Terrapins did enough work at the free-throw line to break a three-game road losing streak.

Guard Dez Wells had 22 points, including seven during a 22-8 Maryland run that opened the second half. Melo Trimble, a freshman guard, finished with 20 points, six rebounds and four assists and was a perfect 12 of 12 at the free-throw line.

Maryland (21-5, 9-4 Big Ten) made eight of its first 10 shots from the field in the second half and led 55-42 with just under 14 minutes left before Penn State (15-11, 3-10) surged back to take a 62-60 lead on a dunk by forward Ross Travis with 7:52 left. Of the Terrapins' final 16 points, all were scored by Wells, Trimble or forward Jake Layman, and all but four of them came at the free-throw line. Maryland was 21 of 26 at the stripe.

Penn State, which had its three-game home winning streak snapped, got 25 points and four assists from senior guard D.J. Newbill, the Big Ten's leading scorer.

VCU 79, George Washington 66

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Starting guard Melvin Johnson scored 14 of his 17 points in the first half and Virginia Commonwealth reserve guards made some big second-half shots as the No. 20 Rams pulled away from George Washington.

With the win, first-place VCU (19-6, 9-3) won for just the second time in five games. The Rams have won eight of their past road conference games.

George Washington (17-8, 7-5) lost for the first time this season at home and saw their 12-game home winning streak come to an end. Guard-forward Patricio Garino had 22 points to pace the Colonials.

TCU 70, Oklahoma State 55

FORT WORTH, Texas -- TCU outscored Oklahoma State 14-2 in the last 3:50 to snap a seven-game losing streak and upset the No. 21 Cowboys at Wilkerson-Greines Activity Center.

Guard Kyan Anderson scored a team-high 14 points and guard Trey Zeigler added 13 for the Horned Frogs (15-10, 2-10 Big 12).

The loss snapped a three-game winning streak for Oklahoma State (17-8, 7-6), which was led by forward Le'Bryan Nash's game-high 19 points.

Michigan State 59, Ohio State 56

EAST LANSING, Mich. -- Denzel Valentine scored a game-high 17 points, including a go-ahead 3-pointer with four seconds remaining, to send Michigan State over No. 23 Ohio State.

Valentine, a junior guard, added three assists and made five 3-pointers for the Spartans (17-8, 8-4 Big Ten), who recorded their first victory this season over a Top 25 opponent. Valentine has made 19 3-pointers in his last four games.

Forward Branden Dawson supplied 15 points, 11 rebounds, five blocks and four assists while guard Travis Trice contributed nine points and five assists for Michigan State.

Guard Shannon Scott led the Buckeyes (19-7, 8-5) with 15 points, five assists and five rebounds.

Arkansas 71, Ole Miss 70

OXFORD, Miss. -- Sophomore guard Manuale Watkins hit a game-winning floater with eight seconds left and No. 24 Arkansas took over sole possession of second place in the SEC.

The winning play capped a fast-paced, chaotic game that saw Arkansas (20-5, 9-3 SEC), which has won seven of its past eight games, lead for a majority of the game before Ole Miss took a late lead.

Ole Miss (17-8, 8-4) had two turnovers in the final 1:30. A block by Arkansas senior forward Alandise Harris set up the Razorbacks' final possession.

Junior guard Stefan Moody and senior forward M.J. Rhett each scored 16 points to lead the Rebels, who outrebounded the Razorbacks 45-31.

Junior guard Michael Qualls led the Razorbacks with 15 points and nine rebounds.

SMU 73, Connecticut 55

DALLAS -- CenterYanick Moreira collected 13 points and 10 rebounds and No. 25 SMU strengthened its grip on the American Athletic Conference lead after the win over Connecticut.

Forward Markus Kennedy added 13 points and eight boards off the bench and guard Sterling Brown scored 13 points for SMU (21-5, 12-2 AAC), which moved a game ahead of Tulsa for first place in the AAC.

Guard Ryan Boatright scored 19 points for UConn (14-10, 7-5), which had a three-game winning streak ended.

Armadillo: Monday's six-pack

Six of the top minor league prospects of the Chicago White Sox........

1) Carlos Rodon, P-- Led NC State to the 2013 College World Series.

2) Tim Anderson, SS-- Will eventually replace Alexei Ramirez in Chicago

4) Micah Johnson, 2B-- .296 hitter in 306 minor league games.

10) Jacob May, OF-- Grandson of Lee May, powerful hitter in the 70's.

18) Trayce Thompson, OF-- Klay Thompson's brother.

25) James Dykstra, P-- Has older brother who is big prospect in San Diego

**********

Armadillo: Monday's List of 13: Random thoughts on a frigid night.......

13) Its so cold out the icicles hanging off my house put parkas on; wind chill as I type this is a chilly minus-26. Spring training starts in three days, so it'll be fun to watch exhibition baseball games, as long as the satellite dish doesn't freeze. Oy.

12) Wall Street Journal posted that an average NBA regular season game has 7.4 dunks in it; the average All-Star game has 34.2 dunks, which is why I don't watch it. I like to watch guys compete; thats not what an All-Star Game is. Would rather watch a bad college game than the All-Star Game; those guys are competing, at least.

11) Indiana 90, Minnesota 71-- Hoosiers made 18-32 from the arc; impressive.

10) Northwestern 66, Iowa 61-- Horrific loss for the Hawkeyes, losing to a team that had lost its previous ten games; TV people kept showing Doug Collins in the stands, agonizing with his son's team as they struggled. Good TV.

9) Miami-Boston College game was postponed by weather, will be played at 3:00 this afternoon, televised on ESPNU. Hurricanes have been struggling lately.

8) Hofstra 81, Drexel 57-- Dragons won five of last seven games, with both losses by big scores to Hofstra, which has struggled recently otherwise.

7) Quote of the Day, part 2, from Kevin Durant:
“You guys (reporters) really don't know shit. To be honest, man, I'm only here talking to y'all because I have to,. So I really don't care. Y'all not my friends. You're going to write what you want to write. You're going to love us one day and hate us the next. That's a part of it. So I just learn how to deal with y'all.”.

6) Toronto's Kyle Lowry had a dunk in the All-Star Game; he was the only All-Star who hadn't dunked a ball this season.

5) UNLV is a disappointing 5-7 in the Mountain West and now Rashad Vaughn is done with a knee injury; their seven losses are by a total of 26 points. Tough year for the Rebels, but if Vaughn is healthy next year, they'll be back in NCAAs.

4) Penn State hoop coach Patrick Chambers flipped out this weekend over a lack of respect he feels his team gets from refs, because they're not a winning team like his rivals are. Its one of the many obstacles that comes with turning a perennial loser into a winner; once they start winning, Penn State will get more respect. Just the way it is.

3) NFL ref Gene Steratore also works bigtime college hoop games; he had the game at Michigan State Satuirday, one at Wisconsin yesterday. Lot of money in officiating, once you get to that lofty level. He has worked 41 hoop games this year, in addition to his NFL duties.

2) Then there is referee David Hall, who shows up on my TV almost every night. Hall has worked 78 games in 94 days. Not a bad second job.

1) You should follow former Dallas Cowboy executive Gil Brandt on Twitter; he is sharp and gives good tidbits, such as the first NBA All-Star Game was back in 1952 in Boston, and the preliminary was a high school game. That sounds better than all the hoopla you see now, more style than substance.

Armadillo: Sunday's six-pack

-- Stephen Curry won the 3-point contest, making 13 in row at one point. Craig Hodges still holds that record, once making 19 3-pointers in a row.

-- To get in golf's Hall of Fame, you need to win 15+ tournament or 2+ majors.

-- Singer Huey Lewis got a perfect 800 on the Math part of his SATs.

-- Steve Lavin at St John's: 18-22 in January, 22-13 in February.

-- Odd that WCC hoop games get blacked out on DirecTV, but I can watch them for free on my laptop. Makes no sense.

-- Mississippi State's team plane made an amergency landing on its way home to Starkville Saturday night, second time in a week that happened on a plane leaving the Columbia, MO airport. Plane landed safely, everyone is shaken but OK.

**********

Armadillo: Sunday's List of 13: Wrapping up a college basketball Saturday

13) Big West-- Cal-Davis leads by two games after Riverside upset Irvine. Long Beach was 0-2 this week; they look disinterested a lot at start of games. UCSB had 2-0 week, but they'll need star Williams (shoulder) in lineup to make noise in tournament.

12) Mountain West-- Down year here; San Diego State is 10-3 and leads league. New Mexico blew game at Nevada, bad sign for team that will be looking for their 4th MW tourney title in a row. UNLV lost star freshman Vaughn; they're screwed. Colorado State is now on bubble. This could be a one-bid league.

11) Mid-American-- Bowling Green is 9-3 with new coach Jans, after being 13-21 the last two years; Ball State (2-10) is only team that doesn't have 4+ MAC wins. Going to be lot of fun to watch MAC tourney. Kent needs Jimmy Hall to bunce back from having mono- they beat Toledo without him Friday.

10) Missouri Valley-- There's still Wichita and everyone else, but gap has narrowed this year. Northern Iowa is 12-1 in league, but Panthers haven't won an Arch Madness game since 2010. Anything other than a Wichita-UNI tourney final would be a shock. Wichita won tough game at Illinois State yesterday by 6.

9) AAC-- SMU-Tulsa-Temple in three way battle for top spot. Cincinnati lost home game to Tulane yesterday; game was 19-13 at half. UConn/Memphis are NIT teams. Kid at SMU hit a half-court shot on Game Day yesterday, won $18,000, second time in three weeks a kid nailed a halfcourt shot on national TV.

8) Atlantic 14-- Four teams are tied at top (9-3); VCU got injured star Graham back yesterday, won at fading GW. Nine of 14 teams in league are 6-6 or better, as bottom four teams have been pummeled (combined 9-38). There is so much parity this year in college ball; not many really good teams, ton of fragile teams.

7) WCC-- Gonzaga is like UNLV was in the Big West 25 years ago, dominating their league but uplifting other WCC programs like Pepperdine, Portland who have gotten better but not good enough to beat the Zags. St Mary's manages to stay #2, Alydar to Gonzaga's Affirmed.

6) Pac-12-- Arizona is much the best, but they're tied at top with Utah, which didn't play well in losses in Tucson/Westwood. UCLA is tough at home, soft on road. Cal is on the rise, winning five games in row after a dismal start. Washington fell off the cliff after throwing big man Robert Upshaw off the team.

5) SEC-- Kentucky is unbeaten but has been challenged. Arkansas/Ole Miss/LSU are next three best teams, everyone else is erratic as hell or just plain bad. Man, Florida is 12-13, 5-7 in SEC, terrible year for Gators-- five of their last seven games were decided by 1 or 2 points.

4) Big 14-- Wisconsin lost PG Jackson in loss at Rutgers, but is 7-0 since; they've got depth. Again, not lot of great teams here-- home teams are 58-27 SU, making it the #1 conference in America for home teams. Maryland is surprising 9-4 in its first year in conference; they won last two games by total of five points.

Denzel Valentine's shot with 0:02 left won game for Michigan State Saturday on Feb 14, otherwise known as.....Valentine's Day.

3) ACC-- NC State might be the best 15-11 team in the history of the world; they've beaten Duke/Louisville, lost to Wofford/Wake Forest. Erratic, typical of this season's quality of play. Virginia lost its best player Anderson; doubtful he'll be back for first weekend of NCAAs. Miami has slipped since its win at Syracuse.

2) Big East-- Villanova-Butler game last night was excellent ball; Bulldogs are back to where they were when they dominated Horizon League. Seton Hall has some internal problems, when a starting guard transfers in February, then the coach praises him up and down on his way out the door. Everyone else is typically erratic.

1) Big 12-- Kansas is going to win this league for 11th year in row, but Jayhawks did not win conference tourney two of last three years (they've won tourney in six of last nine years). Why is West Virginia in this league? Their shortest road trip is Iowa State; that has to take its toll over the course of a season.

Boston College (+8.5) lost 60-56 at Miami Jan 10, getting outscored 10-6 in last 5:01 after rallying from 13-point deficit to tie game. BC lost five in a row, all by 9+ points; they're 2-3 as home dogs, losing all five games by 1-15-9-11-14 points. Miami lost four of its last five games since win at Syracuse, losing last two road games by total of three points at Florida state, Wake Forest. Underdogs covered all five of Miami road games in ACC; Hurricanes are 0-2 as road favorites.

Villanova is 23-2, but one of losses was 66-61 in OT at Seton Hall when Pirates were more cohesive unit (Jan 3). Hall was 12-2 then, they're 3-10 since, losing starting G Sina to transfer. Wildcats shot 31% in loss to Hall and missed 15 FTs (20-35). Villanova is off big win at Butler Saturday in first place showdown; they've won/covered last six games, covering five of six as home faves, with all six home wins by 12+ points. Seton Hall is 3-2 as road dogs. Big East double digit home favorites are 6-6 vs spread.

Virginia has struggled without Anderson in lineup, winning four games in row, but last three by margins of 1-4-5 points, beating Wake Forest in last game 61-60 as 17-point favorites. Cavaliers are 2-4 as home faves in ACC play. Pitt hammered North Carolina at home Saturday, their third win in last four games; Panthers are 1-4 on ACC road, with three losses by 13+ points and lone win in OT at Boston College. ACC double digit home favorites are 6-9 vs spread.

Clemson won five of its last seven games, is 3-1 as home favorite, with three of last four home wins by 13+ points. Tigers covered five of their last six games overall. Georgia Tech lost four of last five games, but none of losses were by more than six points; Yellow Jackets are 3-2 as dogs on road, with only the Virginia loss (57-28) by more than 7 points. Tech is 3-5 vs spread in its last eight games. ACC home favorites of 4 or less points are 3-4 vs spread.

West Virginia lost three of last four games after an 18-3 start; if they do not create easy baskets via turnovers, they have trouble scoring. Kansas is 4-2 on Big X road, losing in Ames/Stillwater, winning at Baylor by a point, at TCU by 3. Jayhawks are #2 in league at protecting ball, which will get tested here. Mountaineers are 7-5 in Big X, but four of seven wins were TCU/Tech games, two worst teams in league. Big X home teams are 11-5 in games where spread was 3 or less points.

Butler (-11) beat Creighton 64-61 Jan 21, forcing 19 turnovers (+10) in a game they made just 4-16 from arc; Bulldogs are off tough home loss last game to Villanova 48 hours ago- they're 3-2 on Big East road, with last four road games all decided by 4 or less points- their last two road wins were both in OT. Creighton is 3-2 in last five games after starting 0-8 in conference; they scored 77+ points in all three wins. Big East home underdogs of 4 or less points are 5-5 vs spread.

Monmouth is 2-3-1 as home favorite this year; they won at Siena by 19 Saturday in last game; they won 57-50 at Marist Dec 4, forcing Foxes to turn ball over 21 times, while Hawks had 20 of their own. Marist lost its last game at home to Siena; they're 4-2 vs spread in last six games as road dog, losing last two overall by 22-2 points after they had won four in row to help negate 0-9 start, MAAC home favorites of 8+ points are 8-14 vs spread.

Tennessee Tech is 0-11 in true road games this year, but covered games at Tennessee/Alabama; they're 1-2-1 as OVC road dogs, with last three road losses all by 8+ points. Tech won its last three games vs East Tennessee State, with Eagles winning 98-83 foulfest LY-- both teams combined to shoot 79 foul shots in game Tech never trailed. East Tennessee is 1-10-1 vs spread as a SoCon favorite this year, its first year back in that league. Buccaneers won last three home games by 2-13-19 points.

Game of the Day: Kansas at West Virginia
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Kansas Jayhawks at West Virginia Mountaineers

Six games stand in between No. 9 Kansas and its 11th straight Big 12 title, although No. 20 West Virginia can do its part to help stop that run. The Mountaineers hope to avoid their fourth defeat in their last five games on Monday when they host the Jayhawks in the first of two meetings over the next 16 days. West Virginia coach Bob Huggins was critical of everything from his team’s performance to the officiating as the Mountaineers fell apart late in Saturday’s 79-59 loss at Iowa State.

“We’ve relied on turning people over and offensive rebounds and we got neither (Saturday). … The way this whole thing is structured from officiating to the whole deal, I think we just stand five guys in the lane and hope they don’t make shots,” said Huggins after the Cyclones shot 18 more free throws than West Virginia. Kansas won for the seventh time in its last eight contests on Saturday, preserving its two-game edge over Iowa State by rallying from a 13-point first-half deficit at home to upend Baylor. The Jayhawks will try to avenge their last trip to Morgantown, where they nearly overcame a 25-point second-half deficit last March before falling 92-86.

TV: 9 p.m. ET, ESPN

ABOUT KANSAS (21-4, 10-2 Big 12): Perry Ellis (team highs of 13.1 points, seven rebounds) became the 56th player in school history to surpass 1,000 career points with 18 on Saturday. Highly-touted freshman Kelly Oubre Jr. (8.5 points) enjoyed his best performance in nearly a month with 18 points, halting a six-game stretch in which totaled 39 – 16 of which came in a Feb. 2 win against Iowa State. Kansas also got solid play from 6-10, 240-pound sophomore Landen Lucas, who tied a career high with nine points and has seemingly worked his way into the rotation over the last four games after not seeing any court time in three of the previous four.

ABOUT WEST VIRGINIA (19-6, 7-5): Although the Mountaineers have forced at least 16 turnovers in all but one game and lead the country with 21.3, Huggins indicated on his postgame radio show that he could back off his full-court pressure defense. “My frustration is I thought we were going to be a pretty decent half-court defensive team and we’re awful. I think the full-court stuff has (eaten) away at our half-court defense,” said Huggins, whose team ranks 10th in the conference in field-goal percentage defense (45.8). West Virginia is allowing opponents to shoot 57.3 percent from the field while going 1-3 over its last four contests.

TRENDS:

*Jayhawks are 10-3-1 ATS in their last 14 games overall.
*Mountaineers are 0-4 ATS in their last 4 games overall.
*Home team is 4-0 ATS in the last 4 meetings.
*Under is 5-2 in Jayhawks last 7 road games.

Arizona a good bet as double-digit faves

The No. 7 ranked Arizona Wildcats continue to be a good bet when they are favorites of 10-points or more this season after they topped Washington State 86-59 as 15.5-point chalk Sunday night.

It was the 17th time this season the Wildcats have been favored by at least 10 points and they have managed an impressive 12-5 record against the spread when that is the case, including the last five in a row.

Arizona hosts USC this Thursday.

Northern Iowa conitues to be cash for bettors

The No. 13 ranked Northern Iowa Panthers continue to cash for bettors, topping Missouri State 68-57 Sunday night as 10.5-point favorites.

The victory was Northern Iowa's its 13th in a row, but more importantly to bettors the Panthers have lost against the spread just once in their last 12 games, going 8-1-3 ATS.

Northern Iowa has been one of college hoops better bets this season going 14-7-3 ATS and next up for the Panthers is Loyala-Chicago this Wednesday.

Bettors bacing Pitt vs. ice cold ATS Virginia

Virginia may be the No. 3 ranked team in the nation and 13-point home favorites against Pittsburgh Monday night, but bettors think that is way too much chalk for the Cavaliers, who are ice cold against the spread.

A big 71 percent of wagers are backing the Panthers at +13, according to our Covers Consensus, probably due to the fact the Cavs barely escaped with a 1-point win over Wake Forrest this weekend when they were favored by 18.

The Cavaliers have failed to cover the spread in five of their last six games, all as a favorite of 5.5-points or more.

Monday's Tip Sheet

February 15, 2015

Wins and losses this time of the year in men’s college basketball can have a huge effect on a team’s potential seed in this year’s NCAA Tournament. Two national powers that have high aspirations for one of the four top seeds in the Big Dance will be back in action on ESPN’s Big Monday. First in the ACC, the No. 2 Virginia Cavaliers will play host to the Pittsburgh Panthers, followed by the No. 8 Kansas Jayhawks on the road against No. 21 West Virginia in the Big 12.

Pittsburgh Panthers at No. 2 Virginia Cavaliers (ESPN, 7:00 p.m. ET)

Opening Odds: Virginia -13

The Panthers made some noise over the weekend with Saturday’s stunning 89-76 victory against North Carolina as 3 ½-point home underdogs. They have now gone 3-1 both straight-up and against the spread in their last four conference games. The total has gone OVER in nine of their last 10 outings in the ACC. All five Pitt starters scored in double figures in the win over the Tar Heels and it shot a blistering 64.9 percent from the field and 53.3 percent from three-point range. Sophomore forward Sheldon Jeter led the way with 22 points, but another sophomore forward Michael Young continues to lead the team in scoring with 13.3 points per game.

Virginia needed some late-game heroics this past Saturday to get past Wake Forest 61-60 as a heavy 18-point home favorite. The Cavaliers have now failed to cover in five of their last six games and they are 6-7 ATS in 13 home games this season. The loss of junior guard Justin Anderson’s 13.4 PPG to a finger injury as definitely taken some of the punch out of its offense, but defensively Virginia has still been able to keep the clamps on teams by allowing an average of 51.7 points in its last seven games. Junior forward Anthony Gill helped fill the void on offense against the Demon Deacons with a game-high 19 points.

Betting Trends

-- The Panthers are 1-9-1 ATS in their last 11 road games and they have failed to cover in their last six games on the road against a team with a SU winning record at home. The total has gone OVER in their last five Monday games.

-- The Cavaliers have failed to cover in five of their last seven home games, but they are 7-2-1 ATS in their last 10 games played on a Monday. The total has stayed UNDER in seven of their last 10 games following a SU win.

-- Virginia won both meetings last season SU while holding the Panthers to fewer than 49 points in each game to help keep the total UNDER the closing line.

No. 8 Kansas Jayhawks at No. 21 West Virginia Mountaineers (ESPN, 9:00 p.m. ET)

Opening Odds: West Virginia -1

Kansas is coming off a big win this past Saturday by beating nationally ranked Baylor 74-64 as a 7 ½-point home favorite. It was the Jayhawks’ seventh SU victory in their last eight conference games and they are now 3-1 ATS in their last four outings. The total has stayed UNDER in five of their last six games. Kansas is averaging 72.2 PPG while shooting 44.3 percent from the field. Defensively, it is holding opponents to 67.2 points on the other end of the court. Junior forward Perry Ellis scored 18 points in the win over the Bears to exceed his team-high 13.1 point scoring average on the year.

The Mountaineers should fall out of the new national rankings following Saturday’s 79-59 blowout loss to Iowa State as seven-point road underdogs. It was their third SU loss in their last four games and they have failed to cover in all four contests. They return home where the total has gone OVER in four of their last five home games. On the year, West Virginia is averaging 75 PPG, but it is shooting just 41.2 percent from the field. In Saturday’s loss to the Cyclones, it shot 37.9 percent from the floor and a dismal 50 percent from the free throw line. Senior guard Juwan Staten carried the load in the loss with 16 points and seven assists.

Betting Trends

-- The Jayhawks are 7-3-1 ATS in their last 11 games following a SU win and they are 9-3-1 ATS in their last 13 games against a team with a SU winning record. The total has stayed UNDER in five of their last seven road games.

-- The Mountaineers are 1-4 ATS in their last five games following a SU loss and they are 2-5 ATS in their last seven games against a team with a SU winning record. The total has gone OVER in their last five games on a Monday.

-- The home team in this series has gone a perfect 4-0 ATS in the only four meetings and the total has gone OVER in the last three games between the two. Kansas has won three of the four games SU.

Armadillo: Tuesday's six-pack

-- Alabama's athletic department turned a $33M profit last year. Thats million with an M. Whoever replaces Nick Saban someday will have a very tough job.

-- Duke-North Carolina tomorrow night will be first time in 36 years Dick Vitale is not calling the game. Could be the beginning of the end, which would be sad for a guy who has done a lot for both ESPN and raising money to fight cancer.

-- Packers cut Brandon Bostich, the guy who botched the onside kick at the NFC title game in Seattle; they had already fired the special teams coach.

-- West Virginia 62, Kansas 61-- Mountaineers shot 38% but grabbed 22 offensive boards, winning a fiercely competitive game that they needed a little bit more.

-- Looks like Amar'e Stoudemire will become a Dallas Maverick soon.

-- When Derek Jeter gets his number retired in 2016, Bronx Bombers will have 20 retired numbers; #11 will be the lowest available number. Hard to believe they're not going to retire Fred Stanley's number.

**********

Armadillo: Tuesday's List of 13: Some thoughts on basketball......

13) There are eight TV timeouts in college basketball games; each side gets five more timeouts. Do we need 18 timeouts (plus halftime) in every game? Any game? If each time got only two timeouts per game, the action would flow better, kids would play better and scoring would go up.

12) College hoop has a 0:10 rule for getting the ball over halfcourt, the NBA's rule is :08. I'm saying :07 should be the new rule. make teams jog the ball up court, be more aggressive on offense. This would help more than shortening the shot clock.

11) NBA playoff series are too long; you don't need best-of-7 series to determine the better team. Best-of-3 would be better, with Finals best-of-5. So what if higher seeds lost now and then? Little drama makes the event more interesting-- NCAA tourney is great entertainment and it is single elimination.

10) DirecTV needs to add the Pac-12 Network, they just do. Don't need multiple soccer channels, or three C-Spans, or foreign language channels. I need to see games on TV late at night. I'm willing to pay for it, even though I already pay enough, but at the end of the day, I'd like to tailor my own channel setup. Its not asking much.

9) NBA needs to set up a 64-player 1-on-1 tournament for the summer, to benefit whatever charities the players want to support. It would be great fun; they had one for two years in the 70's, but star players backed out. This would be a great event.

8) When ESPN started in the early 80's, one of the first college basketball leagues that let them televise games was the Sun Belt Conference; now they're ignored by ESPN. would be nice if the Sun Belt got a weekly game, even if it was on Sunday afternoon or late Saturday night or even Monday night. They earned it a long time ago.

7) College basketball needs to change the way the games are officiated. I'm deferring to Jeff Van Gundy on this: refs have to allow continuation on drives to the basket, the way the NBA does. This automatically raises scoring, without the game itself changing very much. I'm not big on college hoop becoming more like the NBA, but this is one way to make the game more attractive without changing very much.

What I'm saying is this: Tulane led Cincinnati 19-13 at the half Saturday. We do not need 19-13 halftime scores in basketball.

6) When UConn won the national championship last April, they become the first team since 1987 to win the national title when it was an underdog in its second round game; they were also only the fourth national champ since '87 that was favored in their first round game by less than 10 points.

5) Six of the last eight national champs were #1 seeds; UConn won the other two, as a #7 seed last year, as a #3 seed in 2011.

4) Favorites are 11-4 vs spread in the last fifteen national title games.

3) You may never have seen a Summit League game, but in the last ten years, Summit League games have led the country in best 3-point shooting percentage five times. This league is underrated; good offensive teams-- North Dakota State, South Dakota State, Oral Roberts and Denver runs the Princeton offense.

2) I'd be in favor of the NBA scaling back to a 64-game schedule to reduce the back-to-backs and number of times the best players sit out anyway. More practice time and less games would lead to higher quality of games; problem is, would the players agree to scale their salaries back by the 21.6% that the schedule would be reduced by?

1) Conference realignment has made a mockery of geography; the following series are now conference rivalries, its really hard to believe........

-- UConn-Southern Methodist, which is in Dallas.
-- Rutgers-Nebraska-- Rutgers is the state university of New Jersey.
-- UTEP-Marshall-- Long road trip from El Paso to West Virginia.
-- West Virginia-Texas Tech-- 1,505 miles from Morgantown to Lubbock.
