Wednesday, February 11

Wizards' G Bradley Beal, out Wednesday

Rockets' G James Harden, probable Wednesday

Harden injured his shoulder last game but should be ready to play Wednesday against the Clippers.

Knicks' F Carmelo Anthony, doubtful Wednesday

Anthony left Monday's game after aggravating his left knee injury and did not return. He is not expected to play Wednesday against the Magic.

Mavericks' G Monta Ellis, doubtful Wednesday

Ellis suffered a left hip injury Monday and is unlikely to play Wednesday against the Jazz.

Underdogs post solid results Tuesday

It was a relatively quite night in the NBA with only five games, but the underdog posted some quality results going 4-1 against the spread on the day.

The Detroit Pistons, Houston Rockets, Brooklyn Nets and Denver Nuggets all cashed in while the Chicago Bulls were the only fave to cover on the evening.

Underdogs have had a very slight edge season-to-date, going 394-375-16 (51.24 percent) heading into Wednesday's action.

There are 12 games on the board in the NBA Wednesday.

Kings-Bulls game, not surprisingly, goes under

In a matchup of two of the NBA's hottest under plays, the Sacramento Kings and the Chicago Bulls not surprisingly went under once again with the teams easily going under the 197.5 total, as the Bulls won 104-86.

It was the seventh consecutive game the Kings have gone under the total, while it was the fifth straight for the Bulls.

The Kings try to make it eight unders in a row when they visit another under team in the Milwaukee Bucks tonight. Meanwhile the Bulls host the Cleveland Cavaliers Thursday.

NBA roundup: Harden scores 40 in Rockets' win

PHOENIX -- Shaking off a third-quarter elbow stinger, Houston Rockets guard James Harden scored 40 points, grabbed 12 rebounds and handed out nine assists, leading the Rockets to a 127-118 win over the Phoenix Suns on Tuesday.

Houston blew an 18-point first-quarter lead, fell behind eight in the third and still rallied.

Forward Josh Smith added 20 points and six rebounds for the Rockets, who won for the seventh time in nine games and beat the Suns for the fifth consecutive time.

Phoenix guard Eric Bledsoe had 32 points, and guard Goran Dragic added 20 for the Suns, who enter the All-Star break in a 3-7 slump. Phoenix allowed a combined 80 points in the first and fourth quarters and couldn't stop Harden or any other Rocket down the stretch.

Bulls 104, Kings 86

CHICAGO -- Led by guard Derrick Rose and forward Pau Gasol, Chicago beat Sacramento to earn its third consecutive win.

Rose scored 23 points and had seven assists with no turnovers. Gasol notched his NBA-leading 34th double-double with 26 points and 16 rebounds. Reserve guard Tony Snell scored a career-high 24 points for Chicago and shot a blistering 9-for-11 from the field, including 4-for-6 from behind the 3-point arc.

Guard Rudy Gay, who missed the previous game with a sore left foot, led Sacramento with 24 points. Kings star center DeMarcus Cousins was limited to 15 points on 5-for-15 shooting, and guards Ben McLemore and Ray McCallum each scored 11 points.

Grizzlies 95, Nets 86

MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- Power forward Zach Randolph scored 19 points and grabbed eight rebounds, and center Marc Gasol added 14 points and 11 rebounds as Memphis cruised past Brooklyn.

Memphis gained a 19-point advantage before the end of the first quarter and was up 73-51 with 2:47 left in the third quarter. Grizzlies shooting guard Courtney Lee scored 11 of his 15 points in the third quarter on 4-for-6 shooting.

The Nets used an 11-2 run at the end of the third to slice the lead to 75-62 heading into the fourth quarter. Brooklyn got within seven points in the final 1:44 but no closer. Guard Alan Anderson and center Mason Plumlee led the Nets with 15 points apiece. Plumlee added 14 rebounds.

Pistons 106, Hornets 78

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Forward Greg Monroe had 23 points and 12 rebounds in less than three quarters of action, and guards D.J. Augustin and Jodie Meeks scored 18 each as Detroit rolled over short-handed Charlotte.

The Pistons dominated the second and third quarters, outscoring Charlotte 28-19 in the second and 29-14 in the third. They eventually led by 23 points going into the fourth and pushed the margin up to as many as 31 in the fourth.

The Hornets, who lost their third straight, suited up just 10 players. They traded guard Gary Neal to Minnesota on Tuesday afternoon along with a 2019 second-round pick for guards Mo Williams and Troy Daniels, and they waived guard Elliot Williams. They were also without guard Kemba Walker (knee), center Bismack Biyombo (knee) and forward Michael Kidd-Gilchrist (hamstring). Guard Gerald Henderson led Charlotte with 17 points.

Nuggets 106, Lakers 96

LOS ANGELES -- Point guard Ty Lawson scored a season-high 32 points and handed out 16 assists, leading Denver to a victory over Los Angeles.

Backup forward Darrell Arthur added 15 points for the Nuggets, who snapped a six-game losing streak. Forwards Wilson Chandler and J.J. Hickson scored 13 apiece, while guard Randy Foye chipped in 12 points.

Reserve forward Carlos Boozer scored 21 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for the Lakers, who dropped their fifth in a row and 14th in the past 15 games. Guard Wayne Ellington finished with 18 points.

Game of the Day: Heat at Cavaliers
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Miami Heat at Cleveland Cavaliers (-11.5, 193)

Dwayne Wade will not be in action when he and his Miami teammates visit old friend LeBron James and a surging Cleveland squad on Wednesday. Wade has missed six straight games due to a hamstring issue and while he will travel to Cleveland to be with his team, he is not expected to play and on Tuesday took himself out of the upcoming All-Star Game. The Heat were 1-4 in their first five games since Wade was sidelined before rallying to produce a 109-95 win over the New York Knicks on Monday.

Miami won its first matchup with James - with whom it won two championships in four seasons - on Christmas Day, a result that sent the Cavaliers into a 2-10 tailspin. They've recovered in a big way, with Sunday's 120-105 rout of the Los Angeles Lakers serving as their 13th win in 14 games. Cleveland's star trio of James, Kyrie Irving and Kevin Love combined for 82 points on 60.4 percent shooting as the Cavaliers won their 11th straight game when scoring at least 100 points.

TV: 8 p.m. ET, ESPN

LINE HISTORY: Lines opened as CLE -11.5 with a total of 193.

INJURY REPORT: Heat - G Dwyane Wade (out Wednesday, hamstring), F Shawne Williams (questionable Wednesday, hip). Cavaliers - N/A.

POWER RANKINGS: Heat (-1.2) - Cavaliers (-7.6) + home court (-3) = Cavaliers -9.4

ABOUT THE HEAT (22-29 SU, 23-26-2 ATS, 19-32 O/U): Hassan Whiteside was scoreless in eight minutes in the first matchup with the Cavaliers this season but the budding star has helped to transform the makeup in Miami with his rim-protecting ways and solid play on the offensive end. Whiteside continues to learn how to control his foul trouble after playing just 19 minutes and leaving following a technical foul against New York. "I think it's more so getting an understanding of the refs," Whiteside told the Miami Sun Sentinel. "Just talking to them and really letting me know what they're seeing."

ABOUT THE CAVALIERS (32-21 SU, 24-29 ATS, 18-34-1 O/U): Cleveland hopes to see more performances like the one Love put forth Sunday, when he scored 32 points and grabbed 10 rebounds, but it would likely settle for some consistency on the part of the star forward. Of the Cavaliers' four games this month, Love has scored five points twice while shooting a combined 3-of-15 and has averaged 28 points on 53.1 percent shooting in the other two games. Love, who was 7-of-8 from 3-point range against Los Angeles, missed all four of his long-range attempts and had five rebounds - less than half his season average - in the loss at Miami earlier this season.

Wednesday's Tip Sheet

February 11, 2015

Wizards at Raptors – 7:05 PM EST

Two teams fighting it out for the second seed behind Atlanta in the Eastern Conference meet for the third time this season. Toronto has taken care of Washington twice already, including a 120-116 overtime triumph at the Verizon Center on January 31, as the Raptors won in spite of blowing a 21-point lead. Dwane Casey’s club wraps up a five-game homestand tonight, coming off back-to-back underdog victories over the Clippers and Spurs, as Toronto is 3-1 to the ‘under’ in the past four home contests.

Washington bounced back from a nine-game ATS skid to beat Brooklyn and Orlando at home by double-digits. The Wizards pulled off the season sweep of the Magic on Monday in a 96-80 victory as 10 ½-point favorites, as Randy Wittman’s squad scored below 100 points for the fourth time in five games. The road hasn’t been kind to the Wizards lately, as Washington owns an 0-6 ATS record in the past six games on the highway, which includes underdog losses at Phoenix and Atlanta. Bradley Beal remains 'out' for the Wizards with a toe injury, but Washington has won nine of 11 games this season without the former University of Florida standout.

Grizzlies at Thunder – 8:05 PM EST

Oklahoma City knocked Memphis out of the first round of the playoffs in seven games last season, but the Grizzlies have captured the first two matchups this season. Both games finished ‘under’ the total, as the Grizzlies just knocked off the Thunder, 85-74 on January 31 at FedEx Forum. Memphis’ defense held Russell Westbrook and Kevin Durant each to 5-of-16 shooting from the floor, while the Thunder scored just 12 points in the fourth quarter.

The Grizzlies head to Oklahoma City with no rest after a 95-86 victory over Brooklyn last night, but failed to cover as 13-point favorites as the Nets outscored Memphis, 13-5 in the final 3:30. The Thunder has won four of five games this month, including a 124-114 triumph at Denver on Monday as 6 ½-point favorites. Durant lit up the Nuggets for 40 points as OKC cashed the ‘over’ for the fourth straight game. Scott Brooks’ team looks to improve on a 2-7-1 ATS record in its past 10 contests as a home favorite, but OKC’s offense has performed well of late by busting the 100-point mark in the last five games overall.

Heat at Cavaliers – 8:05 PM EST

LeBron James gets a second shot at his former team after Cleveland was tripped up by Miami on Christmas, 101-91 as six-point road favorites. That feels like a long time ago as the Cavaliers have rolled to a 13-1 record the past 14 games to improve to 32-21, but still sit in the fifth playoff position in the Eastern Conference. David Blatt’s club has been productive for bettors during this hot stretch by covering 11 times, including a 5-1 ATS mark as a favorite of 9 ½ points or more.

Miami erased a 14-point deficit in Monday’s 109-95 home triumph over New York to cash as 4 ½-point favorites, as Chris Bosh bounced back from a pair of subpar performances to score 32 points. Dwyane Wade remains sidelined for the Heat with a hamstring injury, as Miami is 2-4 SU and 3-3 ATS in the past six games without their All-Star guard. The Heat has struggled off a win this season, posting a 2-12 SU and 2-11-1 ATS since late November in this situation.

Lakers at Blazers – 10:05 PM EST

Los Angeles returned home from an 0-4 road swing last night and blew a 12-point lead in a 106-96 setback to Denver, as the Nuggets snapped a six-game losing streak. Now, the Lakers head up the West Coast playing with double-revenge against the Blazers, as Los Angeles actually covered as 12-point underdogs at the Moda Center last month in a 98-94 loss. The Lakers played with no rest in that setback, as Byron Scott’s club has put together a 5-4 ATS record on the second of a back-to-back set this season, but has won just once. Los Angeles has been horrible on the highway in 2015, losing each of its past 10 road games, while compiling a 1-3-1 ATS record as a double-digit underdog.

The Blazers are back home after splitting a pair of games in Texas against the Mavericks and Rockets. Portland took care of Houston on Sunday night, 109-98 as 4 ½-point underdogs, ending a seven-game road skid. The Blazers have won seven of their last nine home contests, while allowing 96 points or less in four of the past five games at the Moda Center. Terry Stotts’ squad has struggled in the favorite role of late, failing to cover in five of the previous six when laying points.

Rockets at Clippers – 10:35 PM EST

Houston looks to finish off the first half at 21 games above .500 as the Rockets finish off a back-to-back set at Staples Center. The Rockets outlasted the Suns last night, 127-118 to beat Phoenix for the third time this season as James Harden torched the Suns for 40 points and 12 rebounds. Kevin McHale’s team has hit the ‘over’ in eight of the past 11 road contests, but the Rockets have been a coin-flip proposition as an away underdog with a 5-5 ATS mark.

The Clippers salvaged their disastrous Grammys road trip by blasting the Mavericks on Monday, 115-98 to cash as eight-point ‘dogs. Los Angeles not only lost Blake Griffin to an elbow injury, but put together a 3-5 SU and 2-6 ATS record on its eight-game away swing, which included double-digit losses at Toronto, Cleveland, and Oklahoma City. The Clippers have won eight of their past 11 games at Staples Center, but L.A. has struggled in the role of a favorite of late by covering just twice in its previous 11 tries as chalk.

Armadillo: Thursday's six-pack

-- Notre Dame 60, Clemson 58-- 4 of 5 Irish road wins are by 3 points or less.

-- Temple 75, Cincinnati 59-- Owls' first win AAC vs Cincinnati in four tries.

-- Georgetown 86, Seton Hall 67-- Pirates are trending....in wrong direction.

-- Michigan State 68, Northwestern 44- Wildcats should've hired Doug Collins.

-- Colorado State 70, New Mexico 59-- Rams avenge their first loss this season.

-- Arkansas 101, Auburn 87-- Bruce Pearl doesn't have enough players.....yet.

**********

Armadillo: Thursday's List of 13: Doing some thinking out loud........

13) Kentucky 71, LSU 69-- Outstanding game; LSU didn't have enough firepower, even after after a 21-2 run that erased a 13-point Kentucky lead. I get the feeling that Calipari wouldn't have minded taking a loss to relieve some pressure on his very young team. Winning the national title is all that matters.

12) Game was LSU's first sellout in six years, first in an SEC game since 2006; they have a program on the rise- their recrutiing class next year is outstanding. LSU guard Keith Hornsby, a 37% shooter from the arc, is the son of singer Bruce Hornsby.

11) Wisconsin 65, Nebraska 55-- Second game in a row, Cornhuskers had 13 points at halftime; they've taken a step back after LY's progress.

10) NBC suspended news anchor Brian Williams for six months, with no pay; what does a guy like that do to earn money now? He probably has some socked away since a guy in his position makes major bucks, but still, what does he do?

9) Meanwhile, Jon Stewart announced he will be leaving The Daily Show sometime in the next year, after 16 years there. He will be sorely missed; funny man.

8) John Daly's ex-wife is suing his current fiance for "alienation of affection", which is the Mississippi legal euphemism for "home wrecker".

7) Ralph Friedgen stepped down as Rutgers' offensive coordinator, meaning the Scarlet Knights will amazingly have their sixth offensive coordinator in six years next fall. Hard to have any continuity that way, but they manage to stay over .500.

6) Baseball America lists Notre Dame sharpshooter Pat Connaughton as the Orioles' #11 minor league prospect; he is supposedly a very good pitching prospect.

5) There will be four Atlanta Hawks in the NBA All-Star Game Sunday, which reminds me of last summer, when the A's had six guys in the All-Star Game, only to implode in the second half. Sometimes time off is useful keeping you mentally fresh; All-Star Game will provide a lot of attention those Hawks aren't used to getting and they're hoping their season goes deep into June, when the Finals are held.

4) There were rumors that Demarcus Cousins' agent was protesting the Kings hiring George Karl as head coach, so much so that Cousins made a statement saying he didn't mind if Karl was named coach. Sounds like a great organization.

3) Detroit Tigers got (fairly) good news; Victor Martinez had his knee scoped, will only miss 4-6 weeks, as opposed to months. Good news for the Armadillos too, my team in a 16-team keeper fantasy league that is going into its 11th year.

2) Guy on ESPN.com listed his top 200 fantasy league players, and I was happy to see that five of the top 32 are on my team, though none of them pitch. When you root for the A's, like I do, you can't get attached to players, because they come and go like there's a freakin' revolving door at the Oakland Coliseum.

Having a fantasy team allows you to root for a team where players leave only if I say so, which is more fun. I've said this before, the world would be a better place if I was allowed to make more decisions-- ha!!!!

1) Can you imagine what the media circus is going to be like next week when Alex Rodriguez reports to spring training in Florida???? It'll be a good day for anyone else to announce bad news, since it'll get buried in the paper by the ARod stuff.

Indiana guard Yogi Ferrell finished with 23 points, but he missed a 3-pointer with about four seconds left and a 2-point try at the buzzer.

The Terps (20-5, 8-4) improved to 15-1 at home this season, including 6-0 against conference foes. Maryland is tied for second in the conference with Ohio State, which beat Penn State earlier Wednesday.

West Virginia 76, Kansas 72

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. -- The 21st-ranked Mountaineers squandered a late 10-point lead before regaining their poise in the final minutes for the win.

Reserve forward Brandon Watkins scored a career-high 14 points and point guard Juwan Staten added 11 despite missing four late free throws for West Virginia (19-5, 7-4 Big 12), which swept the season series.

Forward Nino Williams scored 22 points for Kansas State (12-13, 5-7), which dropped its fifth straight despite taking the lead in the final three minutes with a clutch comeback.

Ohio State 75, Penn State 55

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Forward Sam Thompson scored 22 points and guard D'Angelo Russell had 17 as the 23rd-ranked Buckeyes defeated the Nittany Lions.

Thompson shot 6-for-11 from the floor and made three of five 3-pointers. Russell had seven assists and six rebounds. The Buckeyes (19-6, 7-4 Big Ten) won for the fifth time in six games to maintain second place in the conference.

Senior guard D.J. Newbill had 16 points for Penn State (15-10, 3-9), and junior forward Brandon Taylor finished with 11 points after failing to score in the first half.

Stanford at Utah

February 12, 2015

The Thursday night betting card for college hoops is loaded and includes a key Pac-12 showdown in Salt Lake City.

Utah (18-4 straight up, 15-5-1 against the spread) is in a first-place tie with Arizona with identical 8-2 records in conference play. The Utes are 8-2 both SU and ATS in Pac-12 action after posting back-to-back road wins at USC and at Colorado.

In Saturday's 79-51 win at CU, Utah easily covered the spread as a 5.5-point road 'chalk.' Brandon Taylor drained 6-of-9 shots from 3-point land en route to scoring a game-high 18 points to go with six assists compared to only one turnover. Jordan Loveridge had a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds, while Jelon Wright finished with nine points, seven boards and six assists with only one turnover.

Stanford (16-7 SU, 11-11-1 ATS) has lost three of its last six games to fall to 7-4 in Pac-12 play. The Cardinal had lost back-to-back games before beating USC this past Saturday. However, it failed to cover for a third straight game in the 70-62 triumph as a 14-point home favorite.

Chasson Randle went for a team-best 17 points, while Stefan Nastic had 15 points, eight rebounds and two blocked shots against the Trojans. Anthony Brown added 11 points, nine boards and four assists.

Johnny Dawkins's team has been a road underdog twice this season, going 2-0 ATS with a 74-71 overtime win at Texas as a 10.5-point 'dog. In the other such spot, the Cardinal lost a 79-77 decision at BYU but took the cash catching 4.5 points.

Utah is undefeated in 13 home games with a 9-3 spread record. The Utes are 12th in the RPI Rankings, compiling a 6-4 record against the RPI Top 100. All four of its losses have come against Top-50 foes, including Kansas (63-60 on a neutral court) and true road games at San Diego St., at Arizona and at UCLA.

Wright averages team-highs in scoring (14.2 points per game), assists (5.6 APG) and steals (2.1 SPG).

Stanford has an RPI of 43. The Cardinal has a 7-5 record against the Top 100.

The 'over' is 13-10-1 overall for Stanford, cashing in five of its last seven outings. The 'over' has gone 7-1 in its eight road assignments.

The 'over' is 11-9-1 overall for Utah, 9-2 in its home games.

Stanford has won three in a row over Utah, including the lone meeting last season. The Cardinal held off the Utes 61-60 on March 8 but failed to take the cash as a five-point home fave.

Tip-off is scheduled for 9:00 p.m. Eastern on the Pac-12 Network.

**B.E.'s Bonus Nuggets**

-- Michigan and Illinois will collide in tonight's 9:00 p.m. Eastern tip on ESPN. The Westgate had the Illini favored by seven on the send-out.

-- Purdue has covered the number in five consecutive games and nine of its last 11. The Boilermakers take their act to New Jersey tonight to take on Rutgers as six-point road favorites.

-- Tennessee improved to 4-2 SU and 6-0 ATS in its SEC road assignments last night. The Volunteers went into Memorial Gymnasium and emerged with a 76-73 overtime win at Vanderbilt. They won outright as six-point underdogs, hooking up money-line supporters with a +200 return (risk $100 to win $200).

-- Maryland captured a needed win at home over Indiana last night, but it failed to take the cash for a sixth straight game. The Terrapins edged the Hoosiers 68-66 as six-point home 'chalk.'

-- The 'under' has hit in four consecutive Maryland games.

-- Even though it will be without its leading scorer Michael Frazier II, Florida is favored by 4.5 points (as of early this morning) tonight vs. Ole Miss. Frazier had 27 points against the Rebels two weeks ago in a 72-71 loss at The Tad Pad. While meeting with members of the Florida media on Wednesday, Billy Donovan suggested that Frazier could be out for a "couple of weeks."

-- Penn St. had covered in all seven of its previous underdog situations until last night when Ohio St. thumped the Nittany Lions by a 75-55 count as an 11.5-point home favorite.

-- Texas A&M went into last night's home game vs. Georgia with only one loss in College Station this season. That defeat was the double-overtime setback against Kentucky. Nevertheless, UGA had its way with the Aggies in a 62-53 win as a 4.5-point road underdog. Kenny Gaines and Charles Mann scored 15 and 14 points, respectively, to lead the way. The Bulldogs cashed outstanding +180 money-line tickets.

-- DePaul improved to 10-3 ATS in 13 Big East games thanks to last night's spread cover in an 86-78 loss at St. John's as a 9.5-point road underdog.

-- The downward spiral of this year's Seton Hall squad continued on Wednesday when the school announced that sophomore point guard Jaren Sina was leaving the program. Sina was averaging 7.0 points and 2.6 assists per game. The Pirates were the nation's best ATS team in the first two months of the season, but they have lost three in a row and six of their last eight both SU and ATS. According to multiple reports out of New York and New Jersey, there is friction galore between Kevin Willard's much-hyped freshman recruiting class and the upperclassmen. The main source appears to be freshman Isaiah Whitehead, who went 1-for-11 in Saturday's home loss to Marquette and has committed nine turnovers in the last two games. Whitehead and senior guard Sterling Gibbs, a Big East Player of the Year candidate, were seen engaging in a heated argument during a timeout in the Marquette game.

Finding Future Value

February 12, 2015

With the NFL and college football in the rear view mirror and the NBA playoffs still in the distant future, college basketball is now on center stage in the sports world.

March Madness is the next main event, which means the betting public is paying attention to the college hardwood.

Since there are just a few weeks left in the regular season, it’s a great time to look at college basketball futures that have value. Before we get deeper into this article, I do want to point out that it is crucial to remember that when it comes to playing futures the team you have selected doesn't have to win it all for you to profit. There are plenty of chances to hedge out of longshot plays and still make some significant cash. This is why the most important thing is just to look for value on a relative basis.

Top-ranked Kentucky (24-0) is the huge favorite to cut down the nets this year, deservingly so.

Most betting shops have them listed as a 5/7 favorite (Bet $140 to win $100). The Wildcats are a clear favorite for a reason, but anything can happen in the NCAA Tournament and there's no way I'm playing a future in the middle of February on a team to win the NCAA Tournament at minus money.

I’m looking for value elsewhere and it lies with a handful of teams.

Future Odds listed in parenthesis

1) Duke Blue Devils (8/1) - There aren't many times where I would call a Duke basketball team underrated, but I think this team fits the bill right now. Duke's recent lack of success in the NCAA Tournament has some people sour on this team's chances, but look at their wins this year. I would argue they have the two best wins of anyone in the entire nation. Duke beat Virginia and Wisconsin on the road. I realize that Duke has also slipped up a couple times against teams that aren't great, but you don't win at Charlottesville and Madison unless you are a really good basketball team. Coach K is obviously one of the best (if not the best) coaches in the country. He has a team that is far more committed on the defensive end this year, and that should be able to help them advance deep into the tournament.

2) Gonzaga Bulldogs (12/1) - Mark Few said before this season that he believes this is the best team he's had at Gonzaga. He was right! Gonzaga has only one loss on the year, and that was when they failed to close the deal at Arizona. The Bulldogs have five or six guys who can lead them in scoring on any given night. Kentucky transfer Kyle Wiltjer has been a tremendous addition to the team as has Byron Wesley. In Karnowski and Sabonis, the Bulldogs have two very skilled big men. The knock on Gonzaga is the fact that they play a weaker schedule during the season. This is certainly true in conference play, but the Bulldogs did a good job testing themselves with a tough non-conference schedule. This team is extremely good.

3) Wisconsin Badgers (9/1) - Bo Ryan's team was very close to reaching the title game last year, and this year's version is at least as good. They have battled through some injuries this year, but the team has a bunch of solid contributors. Sam Dekker has been stepping up recently, and if he continues to play at such a high level that makes this team far more difficult to beat. Frank Kaminsky is one of the toughest guys in the nation to guard. The Badgers style of play can be frustrating for opponents, and Wisconsin wins the turnover battle almost every game. Their efficiency on offense is amazing.

4) Iowa State (60/1) - Iowa State hasn't been quite as good as I expected them to be so far this year, but the upside potential is huge for this team. Fred Hoiberg is an underrated coach, and he has done a nice job helping his team peak at the right time in recent years. Last year, Iowa State had to play without their best player, Georges Niang, in the NCAA Tournament, and they still reached the Sweet Sixteen. Monte Morris is an ultra-efficient point guard that takes great care of the basketball. The Cyclones aren't a team that the top seeds will want to see in their bracket this March.

5) San Diego State Aztecs (100/1) - This one is obviously my really long shot. I know San Diego State isn't going to cut down the nets this year. Their offense isn't good enough. I still think they could pull off an upset or two in the NCAA Tournament. Steve Fisher is a tremendous coach, and his players work so hard on the defensive end. There isn't a team in the country that is better on a consistent basis on the defensive end. The Aztecs know how to slow the tempo down and turn the game into a race to 50 or 55. Make a note that this team beat a quality Utah in non-conference play and lost to Arizona, but by just two points.

Thursday's Top Action

February 11, 2015

MICHIGAN WOLVERINES (13-11) at ILLINOIS FIGHTING ILLINI (16-8)

State Farm Center – Champaign, IL
Tip-off: Thursday, 9:00 p.m. ET
Sportsbook.ag Line: Illinois -7

In a rematch of the inaugural Big Ten game this season, where Michigan prevailed in overtime, Illinois looks for revenge on its home floor.

On December 30th 2014, Indiana went into Ann Arbor to play Michigan. Leading the Fighting Illini was senior All-Big Ten G Rayvonte Rice (17.2 PPG). Michigan countered with preseason All-Big Ten G Caris LeVert (14.9 PPG). Just one game later, Illinois learned it would be without Rice for the rest of the season.

A month after that, Michigan learned it would be without LeVert for the rest of the season as well. It’s a good thing, then, that the stars of the aforementioned Michigan win (and cover) over Illinois were guys who are still healthy, as G Malcolm Hill (14.8 PPG, 5.4 RPG) had 17 points and nine boards for the Illini, while reserve G Aubrey Dawkins (4.8 PPG) scored a career-high 20 points (6-for-7 3PT) to aid in the Wolverines’ cause.

The Wolverines and Illini are going in opposite directions, however. While Michigan seemed to band together with close losses at Wisconsin and at Michigan State while playing without LeVert and sophomore G Derrick Walton Jr. (10.7 PPG, 4.7 RPG), they’ve still only won once in their last five and postseason play is starting to seem like a lofty goal. Conversely, the Illini are winners of three straight conference games, fresh off an upset of Michigan State in Lansing on Saturday.

Illinois is 11-1 at home (6-4 ATS) and 4-1 at home in conference (3-2 ATS), while Michigan is 2-4 SU on the road in conference but is 3-0 ATS as a road underdog since Jan. 27. Michigan has dominated this matchup as of late: The Fighting Illini’s last win over Michigan was a 54-52 home win in Feb. 2011, as they’ve dropped the last eight contests between the two squads. Illinois has failed to cover the last four times these two teams have met in Champaign. Michigan has been the favorite the last five times these teams have played.

Not only is Illinois’ Rice injured for the season, but he and fellow G Aaron Cosby (7.8 PPG) are also suspended indefinitely (Cosby was also injured at the time for an issue with his eye). In addition to LeVert, Walton is also doubtful to play for the Wolverines.

Most of the good feeling surrounding the effort without LeVert and Walton has subsided for Michigan, only replaced by slim postseason hope. The Wolverines are still a tough out, especially away from home (just ask Wisconsin), as the only blowout they’ve suffered in someone else’s gym was to Ohio State as a 9.5-point underdog. Unfortunately, the recent personnel losses have rendered Michigan completely inept on the glass over their last three games (22.3 RPG in that span, 349th NCAA). As you can guess, this means they’ve been crushed in rebounding margin (-14, -16, -11) in those games.

This is where they miss Walton and LeVert most, as both were amongst the nation’s better rebounders at the guard position. G Zak Irvin (13.6 PPG, 2.4 threes/game) finally had the breakout game that the Wolverines will need on a consistent basis, as he poured in 23 points on 9-of-16 shooting in Michigan’s 73-70 loss at Indiana on Sunday.

F Ricky Doyle (6.5 PPG), who’s seen the bulk of the playing time as Michigan’s lone big man recently, scored 15 points and added six boards (the only Wolverine with more than three rebounds). Doyle was instrumental in the December win over Illinois scoring 13 points and hitting the free throw that would send that game to overtime.

G Spike Albrecht (5.9 PPG, 3.6 APG) was his consistent self in a starting role with 12 points and seven assists against Indiana; he’s just not the difference maker that Walton is. Dawkins will have to rediscover the touch that made him so lethal against Illinois the first time, as he could only muster seven points in 34 minutes versus Indiana’s Big Ten-worst defense.

Illinois is a mediocre rebounding team (30.8 RPG in-conference, 10th Big Ten), but they won’t need to do much (as shown earlier) to hold a significant advantage over Michigan on the glass. Hill should be the main weapon, again, as he was versus Michigan in December. Hill’s scoring average without Rice is almost three full points per game higher (17.7 PPG - last nine games), and he’s being more assertive as an offensive leader, having attempted double-digit shots in eight of those nine games. Hill’s 6-foot-6, 230lb frame and inside-out game is a physical mismatch for any individual defender on Michigan’s side of the ball.

If Michigan adjusts its defense to keep Hill from stopping them, then G Kendrick Nunn (11.5 PPG; 16.1 PPG with Rice out) will surely make them pay. Nunn’s production has been the biggest beneficiary from Rice’s absence, and arguably the biggest boon to the Illini’s surging ways. Nunn scored only three points in the first meeting with Michigan; you can bet that will change on Thursday. It hasn’t just been the Nunn and Hill show, though, as Illinois has gotten increased production across the board.

G Jaylon Tate’s emergence (3.9 PPG, 3.5APG; 3.3:1 A:TO in Rice’s absence) as a true distributor has freed up Nunn to fire up shots at will. F Leron Black (5.4 PPG, 4.6 RPG) has shown flashes of promise, averaging 6.8 PPG and 7.2 RPG over his past six. Even embattled senior C Nnanna Egwu (7 PPG, 5.5 RPG, 1.8 BPG) has pitched in big performances like his 12-point, seven-rebound, three-block gem at Michigan State on Saturday.

Coach John Croce’s team won’t be mistaken for an offensive juggernaut (63.7 PPG in-conference – down almost 9 PPG from season-long numbers), however Illinois seems to be finding an identity on defense. The Fighting Illini has held their opponents under 0.95 points-per-possession in all three victories during their current win streak (the first time they’ve done so during a three-game stretch this season).

SAINT MARY’S GAELS (18-5) at BYU COUGARS (18-8)

Marriot Center – Provo, UT
Tip-off: Thursday, 9:00 p.m. ET
Sportsbook.ag Line: BYU -6

BYU looks to get revenge for a Jan. 17 loss to St. Mary’s when the Cougars host the Gaels on Thursday.

St. Mary’s is coming off of a 73-58 win-and-cover at home over Pacific on Saturday. The Gaels have now won-and-covered in three of their past four games and five of their past seven as well. Defensively the team is locked in, allowing just 60.8 PPG over the past four contests. BYU, meanwhile, is coming off of a 87-68 victory as eight-point road favorites against Loyola-Marymount. The Cougars are hot offensively, scoring 74+ points in each of their past eight games.

These two teams met on Jan. 17, when St. Mary’s beat BYU 82-77 at McKeon Pavilion. Prior to that win-and-cover for the Gaels, BYU had won-and-covered in its previous two meetings with St. Mary’s. The Gaels, however, are 6-4 SU and ATS in this head-to-head series dating back to Jan. 2, 2004. BYU won-and-covered when hosting St. Mary’s last season, but the Gaels won-and-covered in their previous two trips to Provo. While the Cougars are 10-3 SU at home this season, they are just 2-10 ATS when playing at the Marriot Center. BYU is also just 5-8 ATS when playing against West Coast Conference opponents. The Gaels, on the other hand, are 9-2-1 ATS when playing against the WCC and 5-1-1 ATS when playing on the road this season.

G Jordan Chatman (Ankle) is out for the season for BYU and Fs Nate Austin (Hamstring) and Jamal Aytes (Ankle) are out indefinitely for the Cougars. G Aaron Bright (Ankle) is listed as questionable for St. Mary’s in this one and G Anson Winder (Groin) is questionable for BYU.

St. Mary’s has a very balanced team, averaging 70.2 PPG (107th in NCAA) on 46.6% shooting (50th in NCAA) and allowing just 63.1 PPG (95th in NCAA). This team gets it done on both ends of the floor and dominated the Cougars on the glass in their last meeting, outrebounding BYU 41-28 in that game.

F Brad Waldow (20.0 PPG, 9.4 RPG) could not be stopped in that contest, going for 24 points (10-for-15 FG) with 14 rebounds and two blocks in 37 minutes of action. Waldow is averaging 21.5 PPG in his past two games and has been incredibly efficient in doing so (17-for-29 FG). The Gaels will need to feed him the ball early and often in this one, as he rarely takes bad shots and knows when to get rid of the ball when opponents come with a double team.

G Kerry Carter (12.4 PPG, 5.3 RPG) is one of the best shooters this team has (42% 3PT), but he struggled mightily against BYU last time around. Carter had just 10 points in that game and was really off all night (3-for-12 FG, 1-for-8 3PT). He will need to knock down his open looks, as his shooting was badly missed the last time these teams faced one another.

Luckily for the Gaels, F Garrett Jackson (7.7 PPG, 4.5 RPG) had one of his best games of the season in that victory. Jackson is an extremely accurate shooter (48% 3PT), but he doesn’t shoot the ball often (5.7 FGA). St. Mary’s will need him to be aggressive in this game as he was already able to find success against BYU once this year with 20 points (7-for-10 FG, 3-for-3 3PT) and nine rebounds in 33 minutes.

G Aaron Bright (10.6 PPG, 3.8 APG) would be a big loss if he were unable to play for the Gaels in this one. He is their best passer and is another guy who can create shots for himself when called upon.

BYU runs the most effective offense in college basketball, putting up 84.9 PPG (1st in NCAA) on 46.7% shooting (46th in NCAA). This team moves the ball well, as evidenced by their 17.5 APG (3rd in NCAA) and is also extremely active on the glass (38.7 RPG, 25th in NCAA).

G Tyler Haws (22.5 PPG, 4.4 RPG, 2.4 APG) is the top scorer for this BYU team. Haws has scored 20+ points in 10 straight games for the Cougars and was on fire when the team beat St. Mary’s on Jan. 17, finishing the game with 28 points in 36 minutes. Haws is an excellent shooter from the outside (37% 3PT) and can also get to the free throw line at will (7.2 FTA, 88% FT). He’ll need to have another impressive offensive performance to get his team a victory over St. Mary’s this time around.

While Haws is BYU’s best scorer, G Kyle Collinsworth (13.0 PPG, 8.5 RPG, 5.8 APG, 2.0 SPG) is the Cougars’ best playmaker. The guard can do it all for this team and is coming off of a game in which he recorded a triple-double (23 points, 12 rebounds, 10 assists) against Loyala-Marymount. When these teams last met, Collinsworth had 10 points, six rebounds and three assists in 28 minutes. He was in foul trouble early and he must stay disciplined on the defensive end to ensure his team that he’ll play big minutes in this one.

G Anson Winder (14.0 PPG, 3.7 RPG) strained his groin in a victory over Loyola-Marymount on Saturday. He played just six minutes in that game due to the injury and his health for this game will be crucial to BYU. Winder is a lethal outside shooter (37% 3PT) and can score points in a hurry. His offense would be missed if he were to be unable to go in this one. C Corbin Kaufusi (2.9 PPG, 3.3 RPG) has been thrust into action lately for this depleted Cougars team. Kaufusi is not relied on to do much offensively, but he will need to be aggressive on the glass and protect the rim in this game.

Six of the best minor league prospects for the Chicago Cubs........

2) Addison Russell, SS-- Acquired by Cubs in Samardzija trade.

3) Jorge Soler, OF-- Cuban defector got a $30M contract.

4) Kyle Schwarber, C/OF-- His Indiana team was first Big 14 team to make it to the College World Series since Barry Larkin's Michigan team in 1984.

5) CJ Edwards, P-- Allowed 30 hits in 48 IP in ten AA starts.

22) Erik Jokisch, P-- One of five Northwestern alums to pitch in bigs LY.

**********

Armadillo: Friday's List of 13: Random stuff with weekend here......

13) So Carmelo Anthony is going to play in the All-Star Game Sunday night, then he'll blow off the rest of the season and get his knee scoped; Anthony didn't play for the Knicks Monday or Wednesday, but a stupid exhibition game? He's all in.

Knicks are paying Anthony $22,458,000 this season, but don't seem to mind that he is more interested in the freakin' All-Star Game than regular season games. If he is hurt, then the knee should already have been taken care of, to ensure that he is ready for next season. If they're subtly tanking games, they should be embarrassed, because there is no one at the top of this draft who is that much of a difference maker.

Knicks are an awful team, 10-30 when Anthony plays, 0-13 when he does not. How did he get on the All-Star team to begin with? He has sat out 24.5% of their games.

12) College hoop will probably wind up with a 30-second shot clock, as opposed to the current 35-second clock. Don't think it'll make a big difference; I do think forcing teams to get the ball over halfcourt in 7 seconds instead of ten would prevent teams from walking the ball up and pick up the pace of action. NBA's rule right now is :08.

11) Rashad Vaughn, UNLV's best player, is probably done for the year after hurting his knee Tuesday night; he hurt the same knee in high school last year. Big blow for a Rebel team that had been playing a lot better the last five games.

10) Missouri hoop coach Kim Anderson was flying on a recruiting trip Wednesday night when one of the engines on his plane gave out and the plane had to make an emergency landing near St Louis. Thankfully, pilots landed the plane safely. Coaches fly a lot on small planes to make in-season recruiting trips.

9) Golfer Billy Horschel won $10M last year when he won the Fed Ex Cup; turns out he gave his caddy $1M of it, which is unusually generous.

8) John Daly is less than two years from going on the Senior Tour, where he should win a lot, seeing as he can still compete with the younger guys. Daly should help the Senior Tour; people still like to watch him play.

7) Golfer Padraig Harrington is a licensed accountant; wonder if he does other golfers' taxes? Harrington won the PGA in 2008 but hasn't won in America since.

6) PGA rookie Max Homa once won the pro-am part of a tourney on the Web.com Tour; his partner was actress Janet Jones Gretzky, wife of the Great One; she is not only really pretty, she loves to gamble. Its good to be the Great One.

5) As far as this Little League cheating stuff goes, I'll say this: kids from broken homes wind up with parents living in different places; they have a dad in one town, a mom in another, aunts/uncles/grandparents and sometimes there is a creative use of a relative's address, so the kid can go to school or play ball where he/she prefers.

4) I can think of two high school basketball scenarios around here where addresses were used creatively so that a kid could play ball where he wanted to. One was the dad living in a suburb, the mom in the city, but that one got quashed. The suburban school district actually had detectives watching where the kid went after school.

The other one was a dad using his business, renting an apartment, then using that apartment as his son's "address" so he could play basketball for a different school in a bordering town for a better coach. So the kid drove to School B every day, usually passing the athletic director from School A on his way. Nothing was done.

3) Not sure what Jesse Jackson is trying to prove by objecting to all this; the team from Chicago cheated, they got caught, but so what?

They still had the thrill of winning, that can't be taken away. The kids on other teams in the tournament got cheated and naming another team "champion" isn't going to make them any happier. The actual crime isn't cheating, it is getting caught.

2) Kid named Scott Meredith from Hargraves Military Academy made 18 of 24 from behind the arc Wednesday night; he scored 55 points-- he got fouled on one of the 3-point shots. His team won 131-80; not sure what the other team was doing.

1) Vermont made 16-21 from the arc as a team against Mass-Lowell the other night; even after that display, Catamounts are making only 35% from the arc this season.
