Game of the Day: Louisville at Virginia
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Louisville Cardinals at Virginia Cavaliers (-7)

Virginia rebounded from an uncharacteristic home loss versus Duke last weekend with a clinical performance in Monday’s win at North Carolina. The third-ranked Cavaliers complete their run of three top-15 foes in succession for the first time since 1997 on Saturday when they host No. 8 Louisville. After allowing the Blue Devils to end its 20-0 start and snap its 21-game home winning streak, Virginia regrouped to defeat a ranked Tar Heels squad in Chapel Hill for the first time since 1981.

In addition to holding the North Carolina to its second-lowest point total of the season in their 75-64 victory on Monday, the Cavaliers became only the second team to shoot better than 50 percent against the long and athletic Tar Heels. The Cardinals, whose last setback also came against Duke, have won four straight since that Jan. 17 defeat following Tuesday’s 63-55 triumph over Miami (Fla.) — an opponent that took Virginia to double-overtime in its ACC opener. "We feel like we know (the Cavaliers). Coach (Rick Pitino) has been showing us film of their defense all year; they've been the example that he's shown us on how to do it," guard Terry Rozier told reporters Tuesday.

TV: 7 p.m. ET, ESPN

ABOUT LOUISVILLE (19-3 SU, 7-12-2 ATS, 9-9 O/U): Montrezl Harrell (15.4 points, 9.2 rebounds) played all but one minute Tuesday, but paid a price in doing so, falling hard on his right side in the first half on a running hook before taking an inadvertent shot to the chest while chasing a loose ball in the second half. Rozier (team-high 18.5 points) has been nearly impossible to stop during the Cardinals’ winning streak, delivering half of his eight career 20-point games over that stretch. Louisville, which trails only Virginia in the ACC in field-goal percentage defense, paces the league in blocked shots, steals and turnover margin.

ABOUT VIRGINIA (20-1 SU, 13-6 ATS, 7-8-1 O/U): After yielding a season-high 14 transition points in their loss to Duke, the Cavaliers gave up only two to the high-scoring Tar Heels. London Perrantes (5.7 points, team-high 4.6 assists), who averaged 5.4 points over his previous seven ACC games after erupting for 26 in Virginia’s conference opener, complied with coach Tony Bennett’s pleas to be more assertive Monday, scoring 15 points on 6-of-10 shooting. Virginia leads the conference in fewest fouls, fewest turnovers, scoring defense and scoring margin, ranking among the top six in the country in each category.

TRENDS:

*Cardinals are 5-12-2 ATS in their last 19 games overall.
*Cavaliers are 8-2-1 ATS in their last 11 home games vs. a team with a winning road record.
*Over is 11-4 in Cardinals last 15 vs. Atlantic Coast.
*Under is 4-0-1 in Cavaliers last 5 games following a ATS win.

College basketball Top 25 Saturday betting cheat sheet

(19) Baylor Bears at (12) West Virginia Mountaineers (-3.5)

*Baylor's defense has held teams to an average of 11.5 points below their season scoring averages. The Bears have held 20 of 22 opponents under their season scoring averages.

*The Mountaineers are expecting to have second-leading scorer Devin Williams in the lineup. Williams missed WVU's loss to Oklahoma due to an illness.

(10) Notre Dame Fighting Irish at (5) Duke Blue Devils (-9.5)

*The Fighting Irish have made a living out of winning close games by going 7-2 SU in ACC play when the final margin is in single digits.

*It may only be 10 days since Duke lost to Notre Dame, but this team has changed a lot. Dismissing their sixth man and staging a furious comeback to shock Virginia on the road has assistant coach Nate James "we're a little bit more experienced."

Texas Tech Red Raiders at (14) Iowa State Cyclones (-16.5)

*The Red Raiders have been lights out once they've grabbed the lead after two quarters. Texas Tech is 10-0 this season when leading at the half.

*In the Cyclones last four games they are allowing 44.4 percent from 3-point range. "It's a lot on us, there's no doubt about it," said coach Fred Hoiberg. "We've played off of some shooters that haven't shot a very high percentage, but we've been burned with that as well. For us, you've got to run them off the line and make them take those 2-point shots outside of the paint."

(24) Georgetown Bulldogs at (7) Villanova Wildcats (-9.5)

*We can't go through stretches where we aren't getting shots," John Thompson III told reporters after the Hoyas committed 15 turnovers and squandered a 13-point lead with under 12 minutes left against Providence on Wednesday.

*Ryan Arcidiacono is 22-of-40 from 3-point range over the last eight games and has scored 18 points - his season high - in three of the last six contests.

(18) VCU Rams at St. Bonaventure Bonnies (+3)

*VCU could be without leading scorer Treveon Graham who is suffering from a left ankle sprain. This comes after the Rams lost starting PG Briante Weber for the season on Jan. 31.

*If the Bonnies want to control this game, than the offense needs to run through Youssou Ndoye. In the Bonnies past five wins, Ndoye has averaged 18.6 points and 11.8 rebounds, but only 8.2 points and 8.8 rebounds in the past five losses.

(9) Kansas Jayhawks at Oklahoma State Cowboys (+1)

*Kansas has had a difficult time as of late closing games and coach Bill Self has noticed. "In both of those particular games, I think the other team did a good job of getting after us, but I also think we did a pitiful job of handling them getting after us."

*The Cowboys offense has been lacking this season, as Oklahoma State has scored fewer than 70 points in their past 10 games.

(13) North Carolina Tar Heels at Boston College Eagles (+8.5)

*After a second consecutive loss Monday, Marcus Paige was none too pleased with his teammates.“He was like, ‘Hey, you guys got to look at yourself in the mirror and say whether you’re actually doing everything you can. Because if you sit there and say you are, then you’re lying to yourself,'" Brice Johnson said.

*The Eagles have been good at keeping pace with the top teams in the nation, but beating them has not happened. "We have to have everyone on our team come to play, and we had some key guys not play hard or well," coach Jim Christian told reporters.

(21) Oklahoma Sooners at TCU Horned Frogs (+4.5)

*Oklahoma has held 19 of 22 opponents below their season average in points at the time of competition.

*TCU has struggled mightily in the strong Big 12 this season, dropping their last five SU (1-4 ATS) and averaging seven points less per game within the conference.

DePaul Blue Demons at (22) Butler Bulldogs (-13)

*Blue Demons fans have been forced to watch a lot of bad basketball in recent years, but this year has been a pleasant change. DePaul has been better than expected and is taking aim at ending a streak of seven consecutive losing campaigns.

*Butler's Kameron Woods has been a force on the boards all season – reaching double digits 11 times – and is averaging 15 rebounds over the last two outings to raise his average to a team-best 9.5.

(6) Arizona Wildcats at Arizona State Sun Devils (+8.5)

*The Wildcats are averaging 7.5 steals and the defensive mastery is fueled by point guard T.J. McConnell, who had a career-best eight thefts in the win over Oregon State.

*Arizona State has been taking home court advantage to new heights lately. The Sun Devils have won 26 of their past 30 home games.

Northwestern Wildcats at (4) Wisconsin Badgers (-19)

*Northwestern has been held to 60 points or less in five of its eight conference games.

*"Most of our offense ran through the post," Kaminsky said after a win over Indiana. "We knew we had a size advantage and we knew we had to take advantage of it."

(8) Louisville Cardinals at (3) Virginia Cavaliers (-7)

*"You've got to be a great shooting team to get good shots, because they'll give it to you," coach Pitino said about shooting against Virginia. "And the opening will be a moment, and you've got to take that opening and have great spacing, great movement.

*Virginia's Anthony Gill scored 13 points off the bench Monday – a total that matches or exceeds what Louisville has received from its entire bench in 16 of its 22 games this season.

(23) SMU Mustangs at Tulsa Golden Hurricanes (-1)

*One reason for SMU's success in 2015 has been Markus Kennedy joining the team. After missing the first half of the season due to academic reasons, Kennedy has helped the Mustangs to a 11-2 SU (8-3-2 ATS) record.

*The Golden Hurricane’s 12-game win streak is the program’s longest since the 1999-00 squad won 13 consecutive contests

Missouri State Bears at (17) Wichita State Shockers (-18.5)

*Since Marcus Marshall decided to leave Missouri State, the Bears are 1-6 SU (4-2-1 ATS) and have not once broken 60 points.

*The Shockers have three players averaging in double figures, including forward Darius Carter, who is scoring 11.8 points per game on 53 percent shooting.

Drake Bulldogs at (15) Northern Iowa Panthers (-17)

*During Drake's three game winning streak, they have hit 50 percent from beyond the arc with their trays accounting for 41.8 percent of their points.

*The Panthers, who have yet to allow a MVC foe to score more than 60 points, are holding opponents to a Division I-low 50.6 points in conference play.

(1) Kentucky Wildcats at Florida Gators (+7.5)

*Wildcats Trey Lyles has missed the last two games due to illness and is unlikely to face the Gators. Lyles' absence has been felt in the last two games as the Wildcats were outrebounded by both Alabama and Georgia.

*Florida is 11-7 at home against Kentucky under Donovan.

(11) Utah Utes at Colorado Buffaloes (+5)

*Look for Jakob Poeltl, the 7-foot Austrian, to become a more prominent member of Utah's offense. “We talked about [getting Poeltl shots] and added a couple of new sets to get the ball in," said Utah coach Larry Krystkowiak

*With starter Josh Scott sidelined due to injury, Wesley Gordon is one of two players nationally (major conferences) averaging 10+ rebounds and 2.0 + blocks per game in conference play this season.

(2) Gonzaga Bulldogs at San Francisco Dons (+13.5)

*Sharing the ball effectively has not been an issue for the Bulldogs this season. Gonzaga has five players who are scoring in double figures.

*The Dons have been outrebounded in nine of their last 12 games, and they’re shooting a dismal 27-of-105 from 3-point range over the last six contests.

Armadillo: Sunday's List of 13: Wrapping up a sports Saturday.....

13) Pretty ironic that Spurs' coach Gregg Popovich is applauded for how his teams play and winning four titles while doing things the right way and all that, but this new trend of "recovery days", where star players often sit out one game of back/back nights, is something Popovich popularized with the Spurs.

How would you like to shell out major money to see a game, only to have the star of each team sit out because the teams played the night before? Happens all the time now-- maybe they should give discounts if the stars don't play. Ha!!!!

12) There will be 12 running backs just from the SEC alone at the NFL Combine.

11) Buffalo Bills signed Richie Incognito, who was banished from Miami after he was fingered in that bullying debacle; now he'll play the Dolphins twice a year. He did not play in the NFL this past season. When he was with the Rams, Incognito owned a car that had 31 TVs in it and I'm not kidding. 31 TVs.

10) Chris Paul got docked $25K for criticizing a rookie official, who is also a female; wonder if he would've gotten fined for criticizing a male rookie ref?

9) Virginia lost its best scorer Justin Anderson (broken hand) Saturday; he's getting operated on and is expected back in 4-6 weeks. Selection Sunday is five weeks from today. Tough luck for Tony Bennett's team.

8) Knicks TV analyst, former NBA star Walt Frazier said on air Saturday night he owns "around 125 suits". He must have a very large closet.

7) Noon tipoffs of college basketball games are for TV purposes only; its not normal to have a pregame meal at 8am, meaning you have to go to bed at midnight or so the night before. How many college students go to bed at midnight on Friday night? This leads to lot of lethargic first halves in those noon games.

6) Oak Hill Academy is a prep school in Virginia that is a basketball factory; its five starters this year will be playing next year for: Iowa-Ohio State-Purdue-Florida State and Missouri. Pretty good high school/prep school team.

5) PGA caddies are mad because the bibs they wear at tournaments have advertising on them that nets the PGA Tour a small fortune, but the caddies still have lousy health benefits. Shockingly, lawyers are now involved.

4) Every time I watch the movie Draft Day, I'm amused that Hodges from CSI plays the GM of the Kansas City Chiefs; unusual casting.

3) Saw a stat line I've never seen before; in Wednesday's 83-82 loss at Ohio U, the Akron Zips were 0-6 from the foul line for the game, and 18-36 from the 3-point arc. It makes no sense, but thats what happened.

2) Best wishes to Providence hoop coach Ed Cooley, who had trouble breathing at the Friars' game at Xavier; he spent the night in a Cincinnati hospital. He left the bench early in the second half and was taken to the hospital during the game.

1) Saturday, the Knicks, Nets, Rangers, Islanders, Devils all lost, first time all five teams lost on the same day since 1986.

Sunday's Tip Sheet

February 7, 2015

This weekend’s betting action in men’s college basketball closes things out this Sunday night with an East Coast/West Coast trio of games involving teams from the ACC and Pac-12. In a 6:30 p.m. (ET) start in Miami, the Hurricanes will play host to Clemson. The featured matchup on the Pac-12 Network pits Washington State on the road against Oregon in a 7 p.m. tip. At 8:30 p.m. USC will wrap things up in a road game against Stanford.

Clemson Tigers vs. Miami Hurricanes (ESPNU, 6:30 p.m. ET)

Opening Odds: Miami -7

The Tigers have strung together four straight-up victories while covering against the spread in their last three contests. They are coming off a solid 62-56 win against Florida State this past Wednesday as 2 ½-point road underdogs. The total has now stayed UNDER in their last seven games. Clemson is way down the list when it comes to scoring with an average of 63 points per game, but it has remained solid on the other end of the court by holding opponents to 60.5 points.

Miami has fallen below .500 in ACC play at 4-5 SU with three straight losses (SU and ATS) including a 63-55 setback against Louisville as a 4 ½-point home underdog this past Tuesday. The total has stayed UNDER in all three games. The Hurricanes have been a bit more productive on offense with 68 PPG and they are shooting 43.6 percent from the field. Junior guard Sheldon McClellan is averaging 14.1 points and he is the team’s best pure shooter with a 50.2 field goal percentage.

Betting Trends

-- The Tigers are 4-1 ATS in their last five road games and they are 5-1 ATS in their last six games against a team with a SU winning record. The total has stayed UNDER in five of their last six games played on the road.

-- The Hurricanes have failed to cover in four of their last five home games and they are 0-3-1 ATS in their last four games following a SU loss. The total has stayed UNDER in 16 of their last 21 games at home.

-- The underdog has covered ATS in 12 of the last 16 meetings and the total has stayed UNDER in six of the last eight meetings in Miami. This series is tied 3-3 SU in the last six games, but Clemson has a 5-0-1 edge ATS.

Washington State Cougars vs. Oregon Ducks (Pac-12 Network, 7 p.m. ET)

Opening Odds: Oregon -11

The Cougars will look to avoid a state sweep after falling to Oregon State 55-50 this past Thursday as seven-point road underdogs. It was their fifth SU loss in their last six games and they have gone a costly 2-4 ATS during this slide. Washington State is averaging 70.4 points led by senior guard DaVonte Lacy’s 17.1 PPG. Sophomore forward Josh Hawkinson is chipping-in another 15.2 points and pulling down a team-high 10.8 rebounds a game. Defensively, the Cougars are allowing an average of 75.2 PPG, which is ranked near the bottom of Division I teams.

Oregon has won four of its last five games SU, but ATS it has only covered in two of its last nine outings. The Ducks got past Washington 78-74 this past Wednesday, but they failed to cover as six-point home favorites. They are now 7-8 ATS at home this year. Senior guard Joseph Young exploded for 32 points in the win over the Huskies and he leads the team in scoring with an average of 19.3 PPG. Oregon is averaging 76.5 points and shooting 45.8 percent from the field. It has been effective under the boards with 38.1 rebounds a game.

Betting Trends

-- The Cougars are 5-12 ATS in their last 17 games following a SU loss and they are 6-18-4 ATS in their last 28 road games. The total has gone OVER in their last eight games following a SU loss.

-- The Ducks are 2-5 ATS in their last seven home games against a team with a SU losing record on the road and they have failed to cover in four of their last five home games overall. The total has gone OVER in nine of their last 13 games played on a Sunday.

-- Head-to-head in this conference clash, the home team is 8-3 ATS in the last 11 meetings and the total has stayed UNDER in three of the last five meetings. Washington State outlasted Oregon 108-99 in overtime in the first meeting this season on Jan. 15 as a three-point home underdog. The total easily went OVER the 146-point closing line in that game.

USC Trojans vs. Stanford Cardinal (ESPNU, 8:30 p.m. ET)

Opening Odds: Stanford -13 ½

The Trojans are buried in the Pac-12 standings with just one SU victory in their first 10 conference games, but they are an even 5-5 ATS. They covered as 7 ½-point road underdogs in Thursday’s tight 70-69 loss to California and the total has now gone OVER in four of their last seven games. USC is averaging 67 PPG and shooting just 41.7 percent from the field. One of the bright spots for the Trojans has been the play of freshman guard Jordan McLaughlin. He scored 20 points while snagging five rebounds in the loss to the Golden Bears.

Stanford is three games in back of Arizona in the Pac-12 standings at 6-4 SU and it has gone 4-5-1 ATS. The Cardinal have dropped their last two games in SU losses against Washington State and UCLA after closing as favorites. The total stayed UNDER against the Bruins, but it had gone OVER in their previous five games. A pair of senior guards in Chasson Randle and Anthony Brown have done most of the damage this season with a combined 36.5 points, 10.5 rebounds and 5.6 assists a game. Stanford is averaging 75.1 PPG and shooting 45 percent from the field.

Betting Trends

-- The Trojans are 6-2 ATS in their last eight road games and they are 9-3 ATS in their last 12 games on the road against a team with a SU winning record at home. The total has gone OVER in four of their last five Sunday games.

-- The Cardinal are 9-3-1 ATS in their last 13 games against a team with a SU losing record and they are 4-2-1 ATS in their last seven home games. The total has stayed UNDER in eight of their last 11 games at home.

-- Stanford has won the last three meetings SU including a 78-76 victory on Jan. 11, but it failed to cover in that game as a six-point road favorite. The total has gone OVER in three of the last five meetings overall and it has gone OVER in the last five meetings at Stanford.

Armadillo: Monday's six-pack

Six of the best minor league prospects for the Baltimore Orioles:

1) Dylan Bundy, P-- Missed all of 2013 after Tommy John surgery.

2) Hunter Harvey, P-- First two prospects are both HS pitchers.

3) Christian Walker, 1B-- Won back/back national titles at South Carolina.

9) Mike Yaztrzemski, OF-- Vandy alum has a very famous grandfather.

11) Pat Connaughton, P-- You've seen him play hoop at Notre Dame.

14) Henry Urrutia, OF-- Got 58 ABs with Orioles in '13; lacks power.

**********

Armadillo: Monday's List of 13: Wrapping up a sports Sunday......

13) RIP coach Dean Smith, who passed away at age 83 Saturday night; if you posted a Mt Rushmore of college basketballl coaches, John Wooden, Mike Krzyzewski and Dean Smith would definitely be on it- the fourth coach would be an interesting debate.

Rupp, Knight, Pitino, Donovan, Izzo, Calipari, Self? My choice would be Pitino.

12) Smith's 4-corner offense is one of the main reasons the shot clock was put into college basketball-- he was an innovator who put lot of coaches into the profession. George Karl, Larry Brown, Roy Williams, Buzz Peterson, Matt Doherty, Jeff Lebo, King Rice, Billy Cunningham, Doug Moe, Scott Cherry, John Kuester, all Tar Heels.

11) Lookalikes: pro golfer Paul Goydos and Lou Piniella.

10) Senior Tour golfer Rod Spittle (great name, by the way) finished three shots out of first place yesterday; he had a 10 on the par-5 6th hole. Cost him lot of money.

9) Blake Griffin has a staph infection in his elbow, is out for at least a couple weeks. Clippers had a rough week on the road; it ain't getting better with Griffin out.

8) Pelicans' star Anthony Davis sprained his shoulder on a nasty fall Saturday night, is doubtful for their game tonight with Utah.

7) Former Ravens' RB Jamal Lewis declared for bankruptcy; the Super Bowl ring he got from Raven owner Steve Bisciotti just sold for $50,820 at an auction.

6) Marv Albert's son Kenny is a very good announcer; he does his homework, asks his analysts good questions and makes broadcasts better, but you would never really notice him. Thats a good thing, by the way. Good play-by-play guys are like a point guard; they set their teammates up and make them better. Albert does that.

5) Utah State got good news this weekend; QB Chuckie Keeton who is a very good player but has been hurt a lot, got a fifth year of eligibility from the NCAA so he'll be back next fall. Aggies went through four QBs last fall, still went 10-4.

4) Tony Romo's Pizza Hut commercial? Wasn't sure it was him until about fourth time I saw it. Not sure his face is well-known enough for him to be on it without a Cowboys' logo or his jersey on or something.

3) Oregon State 64, Washington 50-- Wayne Tinkle might be national Coach of the Year-- his Beavers are 16-7 after not being good for a long time. This is Tinkle's first year in Corvallis; he has some good recruits coming in next year.

2) Rhode Island 79, Richmond 74-- Danny Hurley's Rams are 16-5 and will be a fun team to follow during Championship Week.

1) Boise State 61, San Diego State 46-- Boise snapped 7-game losing streak against the Aztecs-- they're doing well despite losing Anthony Drmic, their best player for the season last month.

Game of the Day: Oklahoma State at Baylor
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Oklahoma State Cowboys at Baylor Bears (-6.5)

Two teams riding a surge of momentum into the home stretch of the Big 12 season hope to stay hot when No. 19 Baylor hosts Oklahoma State on Monday. The Bears have won three straight and five of their last six and are coming off an 87-69 win at No. 12 West Virginia on Saturday. Oklahoma State has won three of the last five meetings, including a 64-53 victory in Stillwater on Jan. 27, and is trying to complete its first regular-season sweep of the Bears since 2006.

The Cowboys, who are trying to stay afloat in the middle of the Big 12 pack and build their NCAA Tournament resumes, picked up a pair of huge wins at home last week, knocking off Texas and No. 9 Kansas. "For the last week our mentality has been play the next play, move on and don't worry about a call," Oklahoma State coach Travis Ford told reporters. "Don't worry about if you missed a shot. Don't worry about if you turn it over. Move on." Baylor is 13-1 at home, the only defeat a 56-55 loss to Kansas on Jan. 7.

TV: 7 p.m. ET, ESPNU

ABOUT OKLAHOMA STATE (16-7, 6-5 Big 12): The Cowboys boast one of the top offensive duos in the Big 12 in guard Phil Forte (17 points) and forward Le'Bryan Nash (16.9 points, 5.6 rebounds). Nash has scored in double figures in all 22 games he has played this season, while Forte has hit double digits in 22 of 23 contests. The Cowboys rely on their defense to produce some of their offense, as they've recorded at least five steals in 21 of their 23 games and averaged 10.3 steals over their past four contests.

ABOUT BAYLOR (18-5, 6-4): The Bears dominate the glass with a 10.1 rebound margin and a whopping 15.7 offensive boards per game, both of which rank in the top five nationally. They also get balanced scoring with forward Taurean Prince (12.3 points, 5.6 rebounds) and guard Kenny Chery (11.8 points, 4.1 assists) leading a group of four players who average double figures and six who average at least 8.3 points. Power forward Rico Gathers (11 points, 12.5 rebounds) leads Baylor's formidable frontcourt, which should have an advantage inside against the Cowboys.

TRENDS:

*Under is 5-1 in the Cowboys' last six overall
*Home team is 13-3-1 ATS in their last 17 meetings
*Cowboys are 1-4-1 ATS in their last six matchups
*Bears are 4-1-1 ATS in their last six games

CONSENSUS: According to Consensus, 59 percent of bets are on the Bears.
