Big Monday Tip Sheet
January 17, 2016

College hoops action continues to heat up in the dead of winter with a pair of key conference matchups on ESPN’s Big Monday slate. First in the ACC, the Syracuse Orange will head down Tobacco Road to face the No. 9 Duke Blue Devils in a 7 p.m. (ET) tip. Over in the Big 12, two nationally ranked teams square-off against one another with the No. 2 Oklahoma Sooners going on the road to face the No. 17 Iowa State Cyclones in a 9 p.m. start.

Syracuse Orange at No. 9 Duke Blue Devils (7 p.m. ESPN)

Betting Point-spread: Duke -12

Betting Matchup

After stumbling out of the gate to a 0-4 start both straight-up and against the spread in ACC play, Syracuse has now won its last two conference games both SU and ATS. This past Saturday, the Orange crushed Wake Forest 83-55 as two-point road underdogs after hammering Boston College 62-40 in their previous outing as 11-point favorites at home. The total has now stayed UNDER in four of their last six games.

The win against BC was head coach Jim Boeheim’s second game back at the helm after serving a NCAA-imposed nine-game suspension and the Orange put forth a solid effort with four players scoring in double figures. Against Wake Forest, senior guard Trevor Cooney led the way with a game-high 25 points while hitting 6-of-11 shots from three-point range. Syracuse is averaging 71.1 points a game and allowing an average of 64.4 points on defense.

The Blue Devils are 14-4 SU on the year with a pedestrian 3-2 record in conference play following a stunning 95-91 loss to Notre Dame this past Saturday as 8 ½-point home favorites. This followed a 68-63 loss to Clemson as 7 ½-point favorites on the road that is sure to knock them out of the AP’s Top 10 this week. The total went OVER 153 ½ points in the loss to the Fighting Irish and it has now gone OVER in eight of their last 11 games.

Duke has gotten a big effort from sophomore guard Grayson Allen this season with a team-high 20.2 points per game, but he has failed to meet that average in four of his last five games. He went 5-for-11 from the field in the loss to Notre Dame including a 2-for-6 shooting performance from three-point range. The Blue Devils remain the second-highest scoring team in the nation with 86.9 PPG, but defensively they have allowed 75 points or more in four of their last eight games.

Betting Trends

The Orange are just 7-23-2 ATS in their last 32 conference games and they have failed to cover in four of their last five road games. The total has stayed UNDER in seven of their last 10 games played on the road.

The Blue Devils are 10-3 ATS in their last 13 games following an ATS loss, but they have gone 4-12-1 ATS in their last 17 Monday games. The total has gone OVER in five of their last six home games.

Duke has won the last four meetings SU and it has a 3-0-1 edge ATS. The total has been evenly split at 2-2 in those four games.

No. 2 Oklahoma Sooners at No. 17 Iowa State Cyclones (9 p.m. ESPN)

Betting Point-spread: Iowa State -2 ½

Betting Matchup

Oklahoma could find itself holding down the top spot in Monday’s new AP Top 25 following a tight 70-68 victory against West Virginia this past Saturday given that the Mountaineers were coming off a huge upset of current No. 1 Kansas early last week. However, after failing to cover as 4 ½-point home favorites in that win, the Sooners are now a costly 1-6 against the spread in their last seven games. The total has stayed UNDER in their last two outings after it went OVER in their previous five games.

Senior guard Buddy Hield led the way in the win over West Virginia with team-high 17 points, but that was well below his 26 PPG scoring average that is the second-highest in the nation. It was just the second time in Oklahoma’s last 10 games that it failed to score at least 83 points and on the year the Sooners are fourth in the nation in scoring with 86.3 points a game. They are also one of the best rebounding teams in the nation with 43.6 a game.

Iowa State was able to bounce-back from losses to Baylor at home and Texas on the road as a favorite in each with a solid 76-63 victory against Kansas State this past Saturday as a slight 1 ½-point road favorite. It was the first time the Cyclones covered in their last four games and the total stayed UNDER the 152 ½-point closing line after going OVER in six of their previous seven games with a closing total line.

This is another team that knows how to light-up a scoreboard with an average of 85.2 PPG. Junior guard Monte Morris led the way in Saturday’s win with 19 points and on the year he is averaging 14.7 PPG. Senior forward Georges Niang has been Iowa State’s leading scorer all season long with 19.6 PPG and he added another 15 points in the win over the Wildcats.

Betting Trends

The Sooners have failed to cover in 11 of their last 13 conference games, but they have gone 7-2 ATS in their last nine games played on Monday. The total has stayed UNDER in nine of their last 13 road games.

The Cyclones are 0-4-1 ATS in their last five home games, but they are 21-10 ATS in their last 31 home games against a team with a SU winning record on the road. The total has gone OVER in their last four games following a SU win.

Head-to-head in this Big 12 tilt, the favorite is 7-3 ATS in the last 10 meetings and the total has stayed UNDER in five of the last seven games. Oklahoma has failed cover in four of its last five road games against Iowa State.

Preview: Orange (12-7) at Blue Devils (14-4)
Date: January 18, 2016 7:00 PM EDT

How a particular team chooses to define a losing streak depends almost entirely on its expectations. At Duke, dropping back-to-back games is considered a major slump.

The ninth-ranked Blue Devils haven't lost three straight in nearly eight years, but they're on the verge of doing just that heading into Monday night's visit from Syracuse.

Duke (14-4, 3-2) won its first three ACC games by average of 19 points as part of a five-game winning streak, then ran into a surging Clemson team that pulled off a 68-63 home upset Wednesday. It was solid offensively against visiting Notre Dame on Saturday but fell 95-91, losing for the first time when scoring at least that many points since 2008.

The Blue Devils haven't lost to three consecutive unranked foes since Feb. 1-11, 2007, part of a four-game skid that also marks the last time they dropped back-to-back home games. They lost four straight, including their first NCAA Tournament game, to end that same season, which also is the last time they lost three in a row overall.

Luke Kennard had a season-high 30 points against the Fighting Irish, and fellow freshman Brandon Ingram finished with 25. Duke ranks second nationally in scoring at 86.9 points per game but is giving up an average of 70.7, which would be its worst since allowing 71.3 per game in 1999-2000.

'We executed on offense, but defensively, we just didn't execute,' Kennard said. 'We didn't keep the ball out of the paint. We didn't rebound very well. Defensively, we've just got to pick it up a little bit.'

Hiccups to start conference play are nothing new for the Blue Devils, who have lost two of their first five ACC games in each of the last four seasons. They lost back-to-back games around this time in 2014-15 before going on to win the national championship.

That doesn't mean much to coach Mike Krzyzewski, who has plenty of newcomers. Also, senior big man Amile Jefferson remains out with a fractured right foot suffered in practice Dec. 12.

'There's nothing from last year,' Krzyzewski said. 'Unless you have a lot of guys (back), whatever you did last year translates a little bit better. ... It's a different year, and we just have to fight and keep getting better and not pay attention to anything else.'

Syracuse (12-7, 2-4) has fought through plenty of distractions, including a nine-game suspension for coach Jim Boeheim stemming from NCAA violations against the program.

Boeheim returned for an 84-73 loss to then-No. 6 North Carolina on Jan. 9, the Orange's fourth straight defeat to open ACC play. They bounced back for a 62-40 rout of Boston College on Wednesday before beginning a stretch of three consecutive road games with Saturday's 83-55 win over Wake Forest.

Trevor Cooney had a season-high 27 points against the Tar Heels before matching his season low with five Wednesday. His 27 points against the Demon Deacons led the way for Syracuse, which has held the opposition to 32.2 percent from the field over the last two.

The Orange face another tough challenge Saturday at Virginia after this contest.

"If we have the mentality we had (at Wake Forest), it's going to do a lot for us," Cooney said. "We know we've lost some games and dug ourselves into a hole, but we also have great opportunities to beat some teams and get some wins."

Cooney scored 13 points but the Orange shot 30.6 percent from the field in a 73-54 loss to Duke on Feb. 28, the Blue Devils' third straight victory in the series.

Preview: Boilermakers (15-3) at Scarlet Knights (6-12)
Date: January 18, 2016 7:00 PM EDT

If Big Ten play has leveled Purdue's season, the effect it's had on Rutgers' second campaign in the conference has been a flatlining.

The 24th-ranked Boilermakers head to New Jersey on Monday night to begin a span of three of four on the road, but there's been no such thing as home-court advantage with the Scarlet Knights for more than a year in the league.

Purdue (15-3, 3-2) has thus far traded wins and losses in the conference and is 4-3 overall dating to a loss against Butler on Dec. 19. It's coming off Wednesday's 74-57 home win over Penn State behind Vince Edwards' season-high 19 points on 6-of-8 shooting.

"When the ball goes in it looks better, but he (Edwards) was efficient, a little more aggressive," coach Matt Painter said. "I thought Vince was really good. I thought (reserve center) Isaac (Haas) was really good."

The sophomore had been limited to 7.8 points per game on 34.1 percent shooting over the preceding 3-3 span.

"You've just got to take your shots in rhythm, take them when they're there and just be ready to shoot," Edwards said. "That's what I did."

While much of the offense came from the frontcourt with Edwards being followed by fellow forward Caleb Swanigan's 13, center A.J. Hammons' 13 and Haas' 14, the Boilermakers' outside shooting is showing signs of gradual improvement.

They made 8 of 21 from long range against the Nittany Lions and are at 39.3 percent in the last three games after entering that span with a 27.8 mark over the prior four.

Purdue has won four straight in the series and both meetings last season with Hammons averaging 15.0 points. Those defeats for Rutgers are part of a 0-20 span in the league since a home win over then-No. 4 Wisconsin on Jan. 11, 2015 - a drought that includes eight home losses by an average of 16.8 points.

The losing streak is the longest in Big Ten play since Northwestern dropped 20 straight from Feb. 15, 2007-Feb. 23, 2008. The most recent to go beyond 20 was the Wildcats' 28-game skid from March 5, 1999-Feb. 6, 2001.

This season's league start has come with Rutgers losing by an average of 22.8 points while its opponents have scored 86.0 per game after Wednesday's 94-68 loss at Ohio State. A 55-27 second half followed a two-point halftime lead for the Scarlet Knights.

"We did a great job in the first half. We were fighting," coach Eddie Jordan said. "We showed some physicality. We were organized. Corey (Sanders) had a nice first half for us."

Sanders had a game-high 20 points on 7-of-14 shooting after a three-game span in which the freshman leading scorer had been limited to 9.0 on 25.7 percent.

The Scarlet Knights (6-12, 0-5), however, shot 38.6 percent and have been held to a 37.7 mark overall and 29.9 from 3-point range in the last four. That's made for an average losing margin of 26.8 points with opponents shooting 51.3 percent.

To close the gap, they could use more consistent play from No. 2 scorer Mike Williams. The sophomore had six points and shot 2 of 13 from the field against the Buckeyes after scoring 22 in a loss to Nebraska on Jan. 9.

In conference play, he's alternated single-digit scoring efforts of 30.0 percent or lower with two games of at least 20 points on 58.3 percent.

Preview: Sooners (15-1) at Cyclones (13-4)
Date: January 18, 2016 9:00 PM EDT

When Oklahoma beat Iowa State in the Big 12 opener, it was thought to be a preview of two of the conference's top contenders. The Sooners have held up their end of the bargain, but the Cyclones desperately seek a revenge win to remain in the hunt.

That chance will come when second-ranked Oklahoma visits No. 17 Iowa State on Monday night for a pivotal conference game for each side.

The last five matchups in this series have come while both teams were ranked, and Iowa State won three of the first four. Oklahoma, though, used an 87-83 victory on Jan. 2 as the launching pad for a hot conference start.

The Sooners (15-1, 4-1) followed with a 109-106 triple-overtime loss at No. 1 Kansas two days later, but they have won three straight and will likely claim that top ranking this week - what would be their first in the AP Top 25 since March 1990.

Oklahoma is in that position after Saturday's 70-68 win over No. 11 West Virginia, which beat Kansas earlier in the week to set up a four-way tie between those three teams and No. 22 Baylor at the top of the Big 12.

Khadeem Lattin, who missed a free throw that could have helped Oklahoma beat Kansas, tipped in a shot with one second left in the win over the Mountaineers.

"The leadership of this group, the senior group, Jordan (Woodard) and those guys know that whatever is today is OK," coach Lon Kruger said. "... but it's nothing in terms of what we have to keep doing in Big 12 play in terms of getting better to keep challenging the opposition that lies ahead.'

Iowa State (13-4, 2-3) was thought to be a challenger entering the conference season but lost three of its first four games before Saturday's 76-63 win at Kansas State.

The Cyclones held the Wildcats to 37.7 percent shooting, a good sign for a team allowing 74.3 points per game while opponents shoot 43 percent - both the worst marks in the Big 12.

Iowa State, though, still has to play Kansas and West Virginia twice each and could desperately use a win over the Sooners.

'I have learned a lot in my short time in this league, and we just have to continue to get better each day,' coach Steve Prohm said. 'But to come here and win like this in double figures, it shows that we are not going to let people push us out and say that Iowa State is done this year.'

Remaining relevant starts with slowing down the conference's top scoring team. Oklahoma averages 86.3 points - slightly more than Iowa State's 85.2 - on 47.1 percent shooting. The Sooners lead the nation with a 45 percent clip from 3-point range, while Iowa State is last in the Big 12 by allowing opponents to shoot 34.7 percent from deep.

That number drops to 32.6 percent in Ames, where the Cyclones are 72-6 since Feb. 26, 2011, and had won nine straight before falling 94-89 to Baylor on Jan. 9.

Oklahoma made 11 3s on 29 attempts in the first matchup as Buddy Hield and Jordan Woodard = two of the nation's top two 3-point shooters - combined to make just 4 of 12.

Iowa State led for most of the second half thanks in large part to Georges Niang's 29 points. That's his high in league play, during which the senior forward is averaging 21.4 points and 6.6 rebounds.

Hield and Niang are the Big 12's top two scorers at 26 and 19.6 points per game, respectively

Armadillo: Tuesday's six-pack

-- Home team won eight of last nine AFC title games; home team is 4-4 in last eight NFC title games.

-- Iowa State 82, Oklahoma 77-- Last time Cyclones beat a #1 team, the best player on the other team was Wilt Chamberlain (1957).

-- Syracuse 64, Duke 62-- Duke lost its last three games, all to unranked teams.

-- Greg Norman got dumped by FOX as its #1 golf analyst.

-- Indianapolis Colts named Brian Schottenheimer as their new QB coach.

-- There apparently is growing momentum to have the DH in both leagues.

Armadillo: Tuesday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but......

13) Detroit Tigers signed Justin Upton for $22M a year for six years, which tells me there is something about Yoenis Cespedes that the general public doesn't know. I'd rather have Cespedes than Upton, although Cespedes is two years older.

12) Warriors 132, Cavaliers 98-- Ugly no-show at home for Cleveland. You play the team that beat you in the Finals last year, you're supposed to compete.

11) Knicks 119, 76ers 113 2OT-- New York was 25-30 on the foul line; Philly was 13-25. Sixers had rallied back from down 18 late in third quarter.

10) Charlotte 124, Utah 119 2OT-- Solid set of afternoon games in the NBA. Kemba Walker had 52, the first Hornet ever to score 50+ points.

9) Purdue 107, Rutgers 57-- If you're in your third year as coach of a Big 14 team and you lose by 50 at home, it is time to start updating your resume. There are lot of good basketball players in New Jersey-- no excuse for Rutgers to be this bad.

8) Robert Morris won the NEC tournament LY, won a play-in game in the NCAAs, but last spring Clemson poached their best player, 6-3 G Marcquise Reed (he is sitting out this season at Clemson) and now Robert Morris is 4-15 and floundering. It is a free country, but poaching players from mid-majors is a growing trend and it stinks.

7) You'll see some Saturday afternoon NBA games starting later this month for this reason: the league now has a Saturday night TV deal in Europe- since they're 5-6 hours ahead of us, for games to be shown live there they have to be afternoon games here.

6) Odd stat: West Virginia won the Big East tournament in 2010, then made it to the Final Four in DeSean Butler's last year there; since then, the Mountaineers are 0-5 in conference tournament games- that surprised me.

5) Guy in the Australian Open Sunday night was wearing two different sneakers as he played, one black, one orange. Hopefully this is not a portent of the future. Some wiseguy said he probably has another pair just like that one back in his hotel. .

4) I enjoy the instant replay system in tennis; it is quick and it makes a difference.

3) This is the first time since 2004 that both conference championship games have the #1 seed playing #2 seed. Home sides were 4-0 this past weekend, after being 0-4 the week before. Sunday should be an interesting day.

2) It wound up not mattering Saturday night, but Patrick Peterson drew a taunting penalty as he ran back an INT for a TD, turning and waving to guys who were chasing him. How stupid can he be? If not for another Arizona penalty on the same play, he would've cost his team a TD in a game that wound up going to overtime. Wise up!!!

1) If you like politics or are interested by it, there is a good reality show on Showtime called The Circus, about this year's Presidential race. Lot of behind-the-scenes looks at rallies, interviews with candidates. Stuff we don't normally get to see.

Winners and Losers
January 19, 2016

Some of the more notable "movers" from this past weekend are noted below...

WINNER: CLEMSON...It's time to officially put Clemson on the Big Dance "bubble watch" after yet another rousing win Saturday, this one over Miami-Florida. It's doubtful any team in the country has run off a stretch of wins as impressive as the Tigers' four in a row vs. Syracuse, Louisville, Duke, and the Canes. The last three of those were at home, but even that comes with a different twist, as Clemson is playing its home games this season 40 miles from campus at Greenville (in the near-16,000-seat Bon Secours Wellness Arena) while Littlejohn Coliseum undergoes renovation. The Tigers continue to play their traditional tough defense for HC Brad Brownell, while versatile 6-7 jr. F Jaron Blossomgame (16.1 ppg) is making a habit of delivering in the clutch, scoring 25 in the win over Miami.

LOSER: DUKE...Not too soon to hit the panic button at Durham after the Blue Devils went down to their second straight defeat, this one 95-91 at home vs. Notre Dame and Coach K's onetime assistant Mike Brey. Of course, when we're talking about Duke, it's in relation to winning the national title, something the current edition appears a long way from in its current state. Which is lacking in depth at the point and in the post, the latter hammered home again when the Fighting Irish attacked the rim with impunity on Saturday. To make a run in March, Duke absolutely needs 6-9 Amile Jefferson (10.3 ppg & 9.3 rpg), Coach K's best post defender and rebounder, to return from a foot injury that has kept him out of action since mid-December. Compounding matters was a third loss in a row on Monday vs. double-digit underdog Syracuse. There is little chance the Blue Devils can make even a spirited defense of their national title unless Jefferson returns, with 7-footer Marshall Plumlee too plodding and 6-9 frosh Brandon Ingram too spindly to provide the dimensions of Jefferson.

WINNER: VIRGINIA TECH...Sticking with our ACC theme this weekend, it's also time to start taking the Hokies seriously after another win (this one at Georgia Tech) on Saturday. A victory over the Yellow Jackets shouldn't be newsworthy (especially a 1-point win), but any win on the conference road is a good win, especially since VPI hadn't won on the ACC trail since 2013. And VPI has already developed a fortress at Cassell Coliseum, where NC State, Virginia, and Wake Forest have fallen thus far in conference play. Now at 12-6, VPI can begin to think seriously about the postseason, with even a Big Dance bid no longer far-fetched. Moreover, it underlines the quick progress made in Blacksburg by 2nd-year HC Buzz Williams, who previously steered Marquette deep into March and is already making a significant impact with the Hokies. Buzz's team has been getting hero performances from several different players of late, with Maryland transfer G Seth Allen (13.3 ppg) sinking the winning FT with three seconds left on Sunday after 6-5 soph G Justin Bibbs scored 32 in the previous triumph over Wake Forest. Meanwhile, South Florida transfer F Zach LeDay (team-best 15.6 ppg) continues to display remarkable consistency, scoring between 18 and 22 points in his last four games.

LOSER: BYU...On Thursday, the Cougars scored a rousing 69-68 win at Gonzaga that seemed to confirm their move into the bubble mix and suggested that HC Dave Rose could to lead another Provo edition into the Big Dance. That, however, was before a shock 84-81 loss on Saturday against a Portland side that had been fading with four straight losses. As usual, defensive issues would haunt BYU, as the Pilots canned ten triples and featured three 20-point scorers, led by underrated G Alec Wintering's 22 points. The Cougars still have time to shoot themselves into the Selection Sunday discussion with Wake Forest transfer G Chase Fischer (18.3 ppg) leading another balanced attack, but the loss at Chiles Center could prove a real albatross into March for BYU.

WINNER: UNLV and interim HC Todd Simon...Last week the Rebels were a smoldering mess, having lost their first three Mountain West games, which prompted the dismissal of HC Dave Rice, who was under increasingly heavy fire from the booster base. Standards are still high at UNLV, and Rice, despite a solid winning record in four-plus seasons, had seen win totals drop each year as it became apparent he was out of his depth. Promoted in Rice's place was 35-year-old assistant Todd Simon, formerly coach at the local, high-profile Findlay Prep and rumored to be favored for the interim position by significant boosters (including "Mr. Findlay Prep" himself, local car dealer Cliff Findlay) instead of other Rice aides Max Good (a former interim UNLV coach and also HC at Loyola Marymount) and Stacey Augmon, a longtime NBA player and former star Rebel player from the best Jerry Tarkanian years. But in just two games, Simon has done what Rice could not, that being unleashing the UNLV running game with full-court pressure defense. The results have been home romps over New Mexico and Air Force. Which might not mean much, but at least there is hope the current season can be salvaged at the Thomas & Mack Center while all sorts of names (Steve Lavin, Rick Pitino, etc.) are mentioned as possible successors. But under Simon, at least the Runnin' Rebels are runnin' again

WINNER: SETON HALL...Right when we were about to dismiss the Pirates after losses to Villanova and Creighton, they dug in their heels and scored a stunning 81-72 win at 12th-ranked Providence on Saturday, providing hope for HC Kevin Willard that the Hall is not going to fade in conference play as it has done often in the Big East portion of its schedule in many recent seasons. Willard made a subtle lineup switch on Saturday, putting UMass transfer G Derrick Gordon in the starting lineup while high-scoring soph G Khadeen Carrington would come off the bench in a sixth-man role. The changes would benefit both, as Gordon scored 15 points and the lefty Carrington, still with 27 minutes of court time, scored a game-high 22. Several other hurdles await in Big East play, but for the moment, the Hall appears intent on at worst staying on the Big Dance bubble into March.

LOSER: MICHIGAN STATE...The Spartans are not about to play their way out of the big Dance or anything similar. But any chances of staying on the top line in one of the regions in March took a double torpedo-hit this past week with a home loss to Iowa (in a revenge game for the Spartans, no less) and then a disturbing 77-76 Sunday setback at Wisconsin against a Badger team that had been struggling for interim HC Greg Gard, seeking to have the interim tag removed from his label in Madison. It was Gard's biggest win, but also the latest suggestion that all might not be well in East Lansing, where defensive issues are suddenly a problem. The recent return of star G Denzel Valentine from a knee injury has not provided the expected spark, and some Big Ten observers are wondering if this MSU team is going to prove the reverse of most Tom Izzo editions that are known to start slow before picking up steam. Thus far, these Spartans are doing things completely opposite, surging to the top in the rankings much sooner than expected, but suddenly having lost three of six.

College season filled with surprises so far
January 19, 2016

PHOENIX (AP) The college basketball season is revving up with some great games and individual performances as it winds toward March Madness.

As is usually the case, the season so far has been filled with some big surprises, including a Final Four coach retiring midseason, a merry bench mob and loads of upsets.

Here's a rundown of some of the biggest surprises so far in the 2015-16 season:

---

BO RYAN'S RETIREMENT

Wisconsin coach Bo Ryan said in June that this would be his last season, then left the door open in August. Instead, he surprised the basketball world by abruptly retiring on Dec. 15 after the Badgers beat Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. Ryan said he came back this season in part to allow top assistant Greg Gard to spend time with his ailing father. Gard's father died this fall, so Ryan decided to give him a chance to prove he can run the program. The 68-year-old Ryan led the Badgers to a school-record 364 wins, seven Big Ten titles and last year's national championship game, where they lost to Duke.

---

MONMOUTH MERRIMENT

The Hawks have some impressive wins this season, including UCLA at Pauley Pavilion, Notre Dame and Rutgers. But for everything Monmouth is doing on the court, its Bench Mob is stealing the show. The Hawks' bench players have turned celebrations into performance art, re-enacting scenes from Star Wars, imitating Santa and his reindeer, even proposing to each other - he said yes - after Monmouth scores a basket or makes a great play. Their masterpiece so far has been their depiction of the Sistine Chapel (http://goo.gl/phcdJR) after a made basket against Georgetown.

---

SHOCKERS START

Wichita State entered this season loaded with expectations after knocking Kansas out of the NCAA Tournament last season. Ron Baker and Fred VanVleet decided to return for their senior seasons and were hoping to lead the Shockers back to the Final Four after doing it three years ago. Wichita State was ranked No. 10 in The Associated Press preseason poll, but quickly dropped out after losing four of its first six games. VanVleet missed four games with a hamstring injury, but the Shockers lost to Tulsa and Seton Hall with him in the lineup. But don't count the Shockers out yet - they've won seven straight heading into Wednesday's game against Northern Iowa.

---

MUSTANGS RISE

A postseason ban due to NCAA sanctions and coach Larry Brown's nine-game suspension has done nothing to slow SMU down. Being down to seven scholarship players hasn't, either. SMU won its first nine games under associate coach Tim Jankovich while Brown served his suspension and kept on winning once the 75-year-old coach returned. The eighth-ranked Mustangs are the only undefeated team (17-0 through Sunday) in Division I and are in the top 10 of The Associated Press poll for the first time in more than 30 years. The Mustangs score in bunches, shoot well and are as balanced as any team in the country, with four players averaging at least 11 points. They'll be fun to watch, even if they can't play in the postseason.

----

UPSETS

No college basketball season is complete without upsets and there have been plenty so far this season. Georgetown has been on the wrong end of a few, losing to Radford to open the season and Monmouth and UNC-Asheville in consecutive games. George Washington pulled one by beating Virginia, ranked No. 6 at the time. Wisconsin, which just knocked off No. 4 Michigan State, lost to Western Illinois and Milwaukee. Alabama State also opened the season with a victory at Virginia Tech, its first win over a team from a power conference since 2001.

---

UPSETS, IOWA STYLE

The state of Iowa seems to have an inordinate number of upsets this season. Northern Iowa pulled of two, knocking off top-ranked North Carolina and No. 5 Iowa State. Iowa took its turn just before the New Year, handing then-No. 1 Michigan State its first loss of the season. The latest came Monday night, when Iowa State, which started the season 1-3, took down newly-top-ranked Oklahoma in Ames. Just a thought: When the NCAA Tournament rolls around, an Iowa school might be a good bet when it comes time to pick an upset.

Preview: Cornhuskers (11-8) at Spartans (16-3)
Date: January 20, 2016 6:30 PM EDT

Michigan State's usual dominance on defense has disappeared over its last two games, and so have the wins.

Eager to begin a new week, the 11th-ranked Spartans figure to be challenged again Wednesday night against a surging Nebraska team that's rolling offensively during its best stretch of the season.

Among the top 10 nationally in field-goal percentage defense and preventing the 3-point shot, Michigan State has struggled in both areas during its first losing streak of the season. After then-No. 16 Iowa went 10 of 22 from beyond the arc to complete a season sweep with Thursday's 76-59 victory in East Lansing, the Spartans were hurt by 28 fouls in a frustrating 77-76 last-second defeat at Wisconsin on Sunday.

The Badgers' 29-of-36 performance from the free-throw line was the difference in a game where Michigan State outshot Wisconsin and owned a 35-25 rebounding advantage.

"We didn't execute the things we had to do down the stretch," coach Tom Izzo said. "We had some things we wanted to do and we didn't do them. It's not very often that you outshoot a team from the field, from the 3-point line, almost from the free-throw line - of course we didn't have as many - turn the ball over nine times and lose. One of the strangest games I've ever coached in."

Now three games back of first-place Indiana and 2 1/2 behind the Hawkeyes in the Big Ten, Michigan State (16-3, 3-3) is suddenly in a near must-win scenario with a showdown with No. 7 Maryland looming Saturday.

The task may not be easy against improving Nebraska (11-8, 3-3), which has shot 54.2 percent and averaged 84.0 points in consecutive wins over Rutgers, Minnesota and Illinois. The Cornhuskers held those three to an average of 60.7 points and 37.9 percent shooting, including 22.5 on 3-pointers.

Winless on the road in Big Ten play last season, Nebraska earned its second straight by outrebounding Illinois 42-24 and owning a 34-20 advantage in the paint in Saturday's 78-67 victory.

That's been a common theme during the Cornhuskers' streak, as they've outscored opponents 126-66 in the lane and had at least 18 more rebounds in all three wins.

"We're a team of slashers,' coach Tim Miles said. 'It's what we do.'

The trend will be tough to continue, as the Spartans have been outperformed on the glass just twice and are tied for third in Division I with a plus-12.5 rebounding margin.
