Preview: Brewers (12-23) at Mets (20-15)
Game: 2
Venue: Citi Field
Date: May 16, 2015 7:10 PM EDT
A weak offense has been the biggest reason for the New York Mets' longest losing streak in almost a year.
The pitching hasn't been too good of late, either.
Jacob deGrom has been very good at Citi Field, however, and he looks for that to continue Saturday night against the Milwaukee Brewers.
New York (20-16) is batting .192 with 10 runs during a five-game slide - its longest since dropping six straight from June 3-8. The Mets matched a season low with three hits in Friday's 7-0 loss to Milwaukee, as Bartolo Colon allowed five runs in the first three innings.
'It gets you kind of startled when you've got one of your best pitchers out there and you look up and man, bang, you're behind,' manager Terry Collins said. 'I mean, we were behind fast! Fast and furious! When you're behind 5-0 and I don't think he'd thrown 30 pitches and it's 5-0, that gets your attention.'
New York's pitching has been a strength all season, but has compiled a 4.79 ERA during the five-game skid. Starters Jonathon Niese and Colon have allowed 12 runs over 11 1-3 innings in the past two games.
Consistency has also been a problem for deGrom (3-4, 3.46 ERA), who has lost three of his last four starts with a 5.64 ERA after allowing two runs in 19 1-3 innings over his first three.
The right-hander, however, is 8-1 with a 1.30 ERA in his last 10 home starts, yielding one run with nine strikeouts in seven innings of a 5-1 win over Baltimore in his most recent on May 6.
He followed that up five days later by surrendering four runs and two homers with a season-high four walks in five innings of Monday's 4-3 road loss to the Chicago Cubs.
"It boils down to location," deGrom said. "I struggled with it and I think that kind of gets me off my game plan. I can't throw the pitches I want for strikes and make some mistakes over the plate and they seem to hit a long way."
DeGrom split two starts against Milwaukee (13-23) last season, posting a 2.25 ERA.
Friday's win improved the Brewers at Citi Field to 14-6, the best winning percentage (.700) by any NL team. They've won 13 of 16 there after collecting three homers and four doubles among their 10 hits Friday.
"We've had plenty of nights like this, but ultimately we've been on the other side of them. So it's nice to have one like this where things go really well for us on both sides of the ball," said Ryan Braun, who homered twice and drove in three runs.
Braun is 11 for 31 (.355) with three homers, eight RBIs and 12 runs over the past nine games. However, he's 0 for 5 versus deGrom.
Matt Garza (2-4, 4.04) tries to continue his string of solid outings for Milwaukee. The right-hander has notched four straight quality starts, going 1-2 with a 3.16 ERA. He had his best start of the season in Sunday's extra-inning win over the Cubs, striking out nine while allowing one run and three hits in seven innings.
Garza was tough on the Mets again on July 24, yielding one run and two hits in eight innings of a 9-1 home win. He's 1-0 with a 1.64 ERA in three career meetings.
The banged-up Mets received some more bad news Friday when they learned that second baseman Dilson Herrera fractured the tip of his middle finger on his throwing hand while taking pregame grounders. He will go on the disabled list, and third baseman Eric Campbell will be recalled from Triple-A Las Vegas.
Daniel Murphy will move from third base, where he was filling in for injured captain David Wright, back to second.
